Brewery news USA, PA: Victory Brewing Co. to open third location in Chester County
Victory Brewing Co. will open its third location in Chester County this October in Kennett Square, delcotimes.com reported on July 16.

Victory’s 250-seat restaurant will have space for outdoor dining and will occupy all 8,138 square feet of the bottom floor of a four-story, luxury apartment building in Kennett Realty Group’s latest upscale residential community.

Victory Brewing Co.’s new location will boast a chef-inspired menu, featuring some of the company’s signature dishes, including the Hand-Tossed Pretzel and Wings of Victory. The space also will be equipped with a five-barrel brewhouse to keep new, site-specific brews — along with Victory’s existing lineup of world-class ales and lagers — flowing. Refillable growlers will be available.

Only beer and wine will be sold at Victory Brewing Co. in Kennett Square. Some of the custom craft beer that will be available will be Hop Devil, Headwaters Pale Ale, Golden Monkey, Victory Lager, Storm King Stout, V Twelve, Helios Saison, Baltic Thunder and Victory Festbier and Hop Wallop. And a custom beer specific to Kennett Square will be offered.

“This place will have all beers we currently make at our Downingtown location, and we will have 30 different flavors on tap,” said Matt Krueger, vice president of operations at ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Stony Creek Brewery breaks ground for construction in Branford
Stony Creek Brewery has broken ground for construction of a new craft brewery, to be located on the waterfront in Branford, CT at 5 Indian Neck Avenue, Wallington Patch reported on July 17.

“Aggressively laidback beer is coming to Branford!” says Edward M. Crowley, one of the owners of Stony Creek Brewery. The company has been brewing elsewhere in Connecticut since its launch in 2012, and is planning to open the new facility by the winter of this year.

Stony Creek brews (203), (860) and (401) India Pale Ales, along with its (203) Stony Creek Lager. The beers are available throughout Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Plans are in place to expand Stony Creek’s beer lineup to include diverse offerings, including seasonals and limited release collaborations. All offered in draft, bottles and cans. The brews will be on tap for purchase by the pint at the Brewery’s tasting room and deck, as well as in growlers (64-ounce jugs) to carry out.

“We're grateful for those who believe in beer and in our mission to bring a great beer experience to Branford and to the regions beyond," says Crowley. "The retailers, the folks at the bars and restaurants, our distributors and our friends and families ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Wolf Brewing to triple brewing capacity
In a recent Nanaimo News Bulletin article, brewer Kev Ward of Wolf Brewing tells the paper that an upcoming expansion will see the brewery doubling its space and tripling its brewing capacity.

“We decided that it was time to expand,” Ward is quoted as saying, “so we’ve got a brand new brewhouse and new tanks all being hand-built up in the Okanagan. We like to keep everything as B.C. as possible – grain, hops, everything, and that includes getting our tanks built as well up in Okanagan by a fellow named Ed Ripley, who’s a really excellent fabricator.”

In addition to helping Wolf to meet the increasing demand for its four existing brands – Golden Honey Ale, Red Brick India Pale Ale, Rannoch Scotch Ale and Black Tail Porter – the expansion will also allow Ward to add several new brands to the portfolio, with a West Coast style Pale Ale and an ESB both being planned.

Brewery news USA, CT: Southport Brewing Co. forced to close its Stamford location
Southport Brewing Co. of Stamford announced it will be closing for good on Sunday, July 20.

In an announcement on its Facebook page, the business wrote: "To our loyal Stamford friends and family, it is with a heavy heart that we announce that after 14 successful years, SBC Stamford Downtown will be closing its doors. The inability to reach an amicable agreement with the landlord, coupled with the ongoing construction, has made us decide that this is the time to move on.

"Thank you all for your support over the years and please join us as we go out in style all week long with a final going away party on Sunday July, 20. All gift cards will be honored at any other SBC Restaurant.”

Southport Brewing Co. also has locations in Southport, Branford and Milford. The other locations are not affected by the closing of the Stamford location.

Brewery news USA, TX: San Antonio Brewing Co. planned for opening by the end of this year
San Antonio Brewing Co. is close to signing a lease that would put the brew pub in a space just east of downtown San Antonio, mySA reported on July 16.

By next week, the startup brewery looks to ink a lease at 306 Austin St., the two-story building that was the former home of Boneshakers, said Vera Deckard, a co-owner and brewer. Vera and her husband, Brent, plan to open the brew spot by year’s end.

The couple already has a 3-barrel brew system and is in the process of ordering fermenters. Plans are to operate the brewery, bar and small kitchen on the bottom floor. Outside, there’s space for a beer garden.

To start, the brewery will serve its beer on six to eight taps. The standard beers will include a pale ale, IPA and coffee porter. There also will be a rotation of seasonal brews such as a wit with blood orange, dark Belgian strong made with piloncillo, imperial red IPA, American hoppy brown ale, and a porter brewed with mole sauce.

Deckard said they will bottle some beers, which they will sell only at the pub. She also plans to sell some beer at Barbaro and Fralo’s pizza.

Brewery news USA, NY: Empire Brewing Company to receive federal funding for expansion and establishing hop farm
Empire Brewing Company will receive federal funding from the Senate to expand its operations in Central New York, Drinks Business Review reported on July 16.

As part of the expansion, the brewery plans to establish a new bottling plant in Madison County, as well as a new farm known as Empire Farmstead Brewery to grow hops.

The expansion will enable the company to increase its footprint and to cater to the increasing consumer demand for beers.

It is also expected to create approximately 50 jobs for the local people.

Additionally, Empire Brewing is seeking funding from the US Department of Agriculture which will be used to produce a new product called Empire Farmhouse Ale using more than 51% ingredients grown at its new proposed farm.

US Senator Charles Schumer said that if Empire Brewing begins growing its own hops and bottling its own beer, then it will be a model for the breweries in the region.

"Empire already is a major player in Central New York, but they have the potential to be a real economic driver, and I will fight to make sure they receive the funding they need to make this expansion a reality," added Schumer.

The company will initially plant four acres of hops, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Archimedes Brewing to change its name
Archimedes Brewing will change its name after its founders received a notice from renowned film director Francis Ford Coppola's California winery to halt use of the name, Oregon Live reported on July 15.

The group announced the upcoming change on July 15, noting in a Facebook post that a California winery said there was "confusion between our name and a wine they produce, despite existing trademark classes."

Justin Marble, one of the brewery's founders, verbally confirmed the letter was from Francis Ford Coppola Winery when reached by phone on July 16. He said in an email he wasn't comfortable sharing the letter because it was private, legal information.

Of the 20 active trademarks for "Archimedes" listed on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's database, one belongs to "L.P. Sentinel Corp. as General Partner and Francis Ford Coppola, trustee of the Coppola Family Trust."

Coppola started the eponymous winery in 2010 in Geyersville, California. Among its collection of wines is a line of red wines under the label Archimedes.

When asked about the letter, Susan Hollander, who is listed as the attorney of record on the database listing, declined to comment. She said she was unaware of the letter and could not comment on ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Greenport Harbor Brewing opens new brewery in Peconic
Since 2009, Greenport Harbor Brewing has been turning out tasty, refreshing beers right in downtown Greenport. Their small brewery/tasting room in a converted firehouse on Carpenter Street has been turning out a surprising variety of delicious brews, all of which thus far have only been available on draft. That’s right: up till now, if you wanted Greenport Harbor beer, you’d have to go to the Greenport tasting room, where you could sample what’s on tap and fill a growler with your favorite. Or you could go to a bar or restaurant that features Greenport Harbor beers, Dan’s Papers reported on July 16.

All of this is about to change. Just a short drive along Route 25 to the west of Greenport, amidst the vineyards of Peconic, Greenport Harbor Brewing has opened a much larger brewery. Located in a former car dealership, the new brewery promises to increase Greenport Harbor’s production by leaps and bounds.

“When we get this new operation running at full capacity, we’ll be able to brew in one day what currently takes us a week to produce at our original facility,” enthuses DJ Swanson, Greenport Harbor’s head brewer. “A lot of the processes will be automated as well, which ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Harvest starts well for winter barley
The UK harvest has begun well for winter barley, with reports of above-normal yields, but only started off an average footing for rapeseed, thus far defying expectations for a strong crop, Agrimoney.com reported on July 17.

The first 50,000 hectares of crops combined, progress in line with the usual pace as of mid-July, is showing "better-than-average" yields, consultancy Adas said.

Yields, for which the 10-year average is 6.4 tonnes per hectare, have been particularly strong in the West Midlands, where they have come in at 7.6 tonnes per hectare so far overall, with some crops in Shropshire and Worcestershire yielding 9.6 tonnes per hectare.

In the South West, where the winter barley harvest is more than one-quarter finished, the yield has averaged 6.7 tonnes per hectare, with poorer results from lighter land dragging down the mean.

For rapeseed, the average yield has come in "close to" the long-term mean of 3.3 tonnes per hectare, with reports of results as high as 4.5 tonnes per hectare in the South East, Adas said.

The comments tally with market talk, with traders at one major European commodities house flagging earlier that "rapeseed yields seem to be close to average".

However, they added that this "is being seen in the ...More info on site

Brewery news China: Online retailer reports sales of 30 mln cans of beer during World Cup
An online retailer in China claims it sold over 30 million cans of beer during the World Cup, China-Wines reported on July 18. According to Want China Times, Tmall which is owned by e-commerce giant Alibaba, reported it sold over 30 mln cans of beer between 1 June and 13 July, a near threefold increase on sales versus the same period last year. A short period between 4-6 June in particular saw a sales spike as customers stocked up before the kick-off on 12 June. German beer was the most sought-after, with four of the top 10 beers being German and Valentins Weisbier being the second most popular behind Tsingtao. Shanghai was the biggest beer buying city, while Shenzen bought the most snacks.
