Brewery news USA, IL: Pipeworks Brewing to build new brewery and triple production
Pipeworks Brewing, which has built a fervent following since its 2012 debut despite miniscule output, is planning to build a new brewery on Chicago's west side that will more than triple its production, Chicago Tribune reported on July 24.

Brewery co-founder Gerrit Lewis said on July 24 that he and partner Beejay Oslon have signed a 20-year lease on a 16,000-square-foot space at 3912 W. MacLean Ave., near Pulaski Road and Armitage Avenue. The new brewery will share a wall, and private patio, with Off Color Brewing, another small Chicago craft brewery.

Armed with a federal small business loan for "around $1 million," Lewis said, Pipeworks has ordered a 30-barrel brewing system that will allow it to increase production to about 6,000 barrels of beer in 2015. The brewery has already grown from making 430 barrels in 2012 to a projected 1,800 barrels this year.

The new beer will be used to meet the demand that Pipeworks has struggled to supply in Chicago, Lewis said, including a significant increase in draft distribution. Pipeworks also plans to package beer in four-packs of 16-ounce cans, as well as in 22-ounce bottles — its primary method of distribution so far — for its more adventurous recipes, ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NB: New NB Liquor rules may force Railcar Brewing to shut down before it even opens
CBC News reported on July 17 that Railcar Brewing, a new brewery that was set to launch next month in rural New Brunswick, may be forced shut down before it even opens due to newly implemented NB Liquor rules around minimum sales amounts.

As owner Mitch Biggar noted on Facebook last week, the new rules state that any new brewery starting up in the province must produce and sell 10,000 litres of beer via the government-owned ANBL retail store chain within 12 months before being issued a license for on-site retail and direct sales.

As small breweries generally depend on direct sales of bottles, growlers and kegs for a large portion of their income, this policy may not only drive Biggar to abandon his plans to open Railcar, but it could dissuade other craft breweries from opening in New Brunswick in the future.

NB Liquor has given no reason for the new rule, beyond telling CBC News that “it feels selling 10,000 litres in its stores is a manageable amount for breweries.”

An online petition against the rule has gathered more than 280 signatories so far, and Biggar will be meeting with the president of NB Liquor to discuss the policy.

Brewery news USA, FL: MIA Brewing Company officially open for production
MIA Brewing Company, Miami-Dade County's newest brewery, is officially open for production in Doral, Miami New Times reported on July 23.

Owner Eddie Leon received the temporary certificate of occupancy from the City of Doral last week, allowing him to legally use the building as a brewery. The permit lets the brewery produce beer using the existing equipment.

The permit excludes a taproom, which is being completed and should be ready in the coming months. Originally, Leon anticipated a January opening, but the brewery hit a few delays with permitting and construction.

"We were partially delayed because we had to revise the plans to include the beer garden and minor modifications in the interior," Leon says.

The first beer to be launched is a hefeweizen, whose initial batches should be ready at the end of August. Most Wanted Beverages, distributor of MIA Brewing, will deliver the beer to at least 30 accounts throughout the city, including Kush, Lokal, Clandestino Pub, the Butcher Shop, and Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza.

The next beers to follow will be an IPA and then a Kolsch. A stout will be available sometime in October and might be available for Grovetoberfest, Leon says.

Leon helped found Most Wanted, a stake of which ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: British Columbia’s newest craft brewery launches in Port Moody
The small city of Port Moody in BC’s Metro Vancouver region is now home to the province’s newest craft brewery, with the recent opening of Yellow Dog Brewing, Canadian Beer News reported on July 24.

Founded by the husband and wife team of Mike and Melinda Coghill and head brewer Liam Murphy (ex-Parallel 49), Yellow Dog had its first kegs tapped at local pubs The Burrard Public House and St. James’s Well last week, and opened its taproom and retail store on July 19th for samples and growler sales.

The brewery’s name and canine-themed brands are inspired by Chase, the yellow lab owned by the Coghills, and include Chase My Tail Pale Ale, Play Dead India Pale Ale and Take a Walk Wit.

Brewery news USA, TN: Memphis Made Brewing Co. to double production capacity
Memphis Made Brewing Co. is expanding its production capability, Memphis Business Journal reported on July 24.

The local brewery is adding three new fermenters, doubling its beer production capabilities. Since launching in 2013, Memphis Made has released several different brands, including Southern Julep, Reverberation, Fruit Ninja and its latest pale ale, Bear Cat. Earlier this year, Memphis Made released its first bottled beers, which are available at the Madison Growler and Bottle Shop, located inside the Cash Saver at 1620 Madison Ave. and Whole Foods Market.

According to a company statement, the bottled beers have contributed to the company’s expansion. Memphis Made will also take advantage of laws allowing low gravity beer to be sold in liquor stores.

“The changes in the law have opened up a lot of new offerings for us, including the Memphis Made beers. Our customers really like a good variety of beers, especially the local ones, and it’s been good to be able to offer these,” Jeff Howell, co-owner of Yorkshire Liquors, which carries Memphis Made, said.

The company currently distributes beer to more than 60 bars, restaurants, grocery stores and liquor stores in Shelby County.

“We’re following our growth plan, although this expansion has come a little sooner than ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Kingston’s Stone City Ales releases first commercial batch of beer
After many months of planning, renovations and test brewing Kingston’s Stone City Ales has released its first commercial batch of beer to the public, Canadian Beer News reported on July 22.

The debut keg of 12 Star Session Ale – a 4.8% abv and 30 IBU golden pale ale – was tapped on July 21 at Le Chien Noir Bistro in downtown Kingston, just a couple of blocks from the Stone City brewery at 275 Princess Street.

12 Star will soon be joined by two other brands – Uncharted IPA (7% abv & 70 IBU) and Watchtower Conspiracy Imperial IPA (9.1% abv & 85 IBU) – the latter brewed in collaboration with Big Spruce Brewing of Nova Scotia.

Stone City beers will be on tap at several other licensees in Kingston and area soon, and bottle and growler sales are expected to be launched at the brewery on or around July 25th, with full-scale taproom and food service to follow later this summer.

Brewery news Australia: Local craft beer consumption on the rise
For the first time on record Australians’ consumption of craft beer in an average four-week period has increased to more than one million, however the overall preference for locally brewed beer is on the decline, Hospitality Magazine reported on July 4.

Figures recently released by Roy Morgan Research reveal the proportion of Australians aged 18 and over who consume locally produced craft beer has risen from 3.5 percent, or 592,000 people in the year to March 2010 to 5.7 percent, or 1.04 million people in March 2014.

The brews are proving most popular with those under 50, particularly the 25-34 age group – in 2010, 7.9 percent drank craft beer in an average four weeks, a figure that has since risen to 10.7 percent.

Craft beer consumption is on the rise among people from New South Wales and Queensland in particular. Between 2010 and 2014, it was adopted by 186,000 people in New South Wales, meanwhile 99,000 Queensladers developed a penchant for the beverage.

Despite the popularity of local craft beer, overall domestic beer consumption is on the decline. In the year to March 2010, a total of 36.7 percent or 6.1 million Australians opted for local beer in an average ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: British pub group JD Wetherspoon to operate its Irish outlets without any Diageo-distributed products unless the brewer agrees to lower prices
JD Wetherspoon, the British pub group that plans to open 30 outlets in the Republic of Ireland, will operate its Irish bars “for the long-term” without any Diageo-distributed products, such as draught Guinness, Budweiser, Carlsberg or Smithwicks, unless it negotiates lower prices from the brewer, The Irish Times reported on July 25.

Tim Martin, Wetherspoon’s chairman, said July 24 it wanted to stock Diageo’s products, but it was unwilling to pay the price charged for draught beer.

“I don’t want to put pressure on Diageo, but we simply baulked at paying a higher price for Guinness in Ireland than we do in the UK,” he said.

He declined to comment on the price difference between the two markets, but it is understood the Irish price is up to 20 per cent higher.

Mr Martin was speaking on July 24 at the Three Tun Tavern in Blackrock in Dublin, Wetherspoon’s first Irish pub which recently opened without any Diageo-distributed products.

He said Wetherspoon’s contract with Diageo in Britain prevented it from buying draught Guinness cheaply there and shipping it to Ireland.

“I’m confident we can move ahead with or without Diageo. We have a good relationship, but if it turns out that we don’t stock Guinness in ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Harvest 2014 now well underway across the UK
Harvest 2014 is now well underway across the UK. Following the first reports of cutting at the beginning of the month combining progress and crop quality has been variable, Farmers Guardian reported on July 24.

Many growers have made good progress on winter barley crops and most are making a start on oilseed rape. Most growers Farmers Guardian contacted this week hoped to be into wheat within the next 10 days, although some milling wheat had been cut in East Anglia to meet early delivery contracts.

Bedfordshire grower Steven Northern has finished his 124 hectares (306 acres) of oilseed rape and is now waiting for his wheat to ripen.

Crops have been coming in dry at 6-7 per cent moisture content and yielding 3.95 t/ha (1.6 t/acre), which Mr Northern predicted to be roughly 10 per cent above his five-year farm average.

Mr Northern said locally said a ‘good chunk’ of OSR had been cut but 16mm of rain over the weekend had stopped combines.

Further north in south Lincolnshire, Chris Wray has cut some 81 ha (200 acres) of OSR which is yielding about 4.32 t/ha (1.75 t/acre).

Mr Wray said: “This year OSR seems to be yielding well, generally farmers in the area are ...More info on site
