USA, FL: Fort Lauderdale's newest brewery already operational

LauderAle, Fort Lauderdale's newest brewery, opened its doors to the public over the weekend and the turnout was so great that it almost ran out of beer, Broward/Palm Beach New Times reported on July 28.
But then again, the brewery runs on a one-barrel system and the people of South Florida apparently love local craft beer.
After receiving their business tax license from the city on July 21, owners Kyle Jones and Joey Farrell were already in the final steps of opening. All they needed was the beer, which sat in the fermenting tanks, gaining strength for their grand opening on July 22 night.
For Jones and Farrell, first came the worry of whether or not the beer was going to be ready come July 22. After seeing how many people were coming through the doors, they realized there might not be enough to last through the weekend. They went through four barrels over the weekend, but luckily they did not run out.
Jones said they thought about shutting down briefly after their opening weekend to create a backlog of beer.

USA, OH: Ohio Malting Company soon to start malting local barley for local microbreweries
|
Barley stalks bow their heads to indicate kernels of grain are nearly dry enough for harvest.
In Camden Township, the bowed stalks indicate the next step will soon begin at Ohio Malting Company, a new venture of growing barley and making malt for hobby beer makers, The Morning Journal reported on July 25.
“I’m the only person in Ohio growing grain for the micro brewing industry,” said Bob Matus, owner of Matus Winery, 15674 Gore Orphanage Road, Wakeman. “It’s for the small guys, the Ohio breweries. All the breweries buy grain from Wisconsin and Canada. Well, why don’t we grow grain here? This is fresher, right on the spot, locally grown in Lorain County.”
Eric Stockinger, associate professor at The Ohio State University and OARDC department of Horticulture and Crop Science, said Matus is one of very few growers of barley for malt in the state.
“(Matus) is one of the pioneers,” Stockinger said. “He’s doing it completely independently. He’s going for it.”

USA, ME & NH: Sea Dog Brewing Co. to open its first New Hampshire location this fall
|
Sea Dog Brewing Co. plans to open its first New Hampshire location in North Conway this fall, expanding its northern New England footprint beyond its Bangor, South Portland and Topsham pubs, Bangor Daily News reported on July 28.
Jim Bunting, operations manager for the company acquired by Shipyard Brewing owner Fred Forsley more than a decade ago, said in a prepared statement that “it was a really quick decision” to move into the Mount Washington Valley, driven by the vacancy of an antique barn, a growing restaurant and brewery scene and access to local food sources.
The New Hampshire expansion follows on the approach the company has taken in opening pubs in Florida, where it last year opened pubs with small brewing operations supplemented by beer production done mostly in Bangor. The New Hampshire location is its sixth.
In Massachusetts, the Sea Dog brand has run into challenges, according to the Boston Business Journal. The publication reported a Sea Dog pub licensed but not run by Forsley and Pugsley in Woburn, Massachusetts, filed for bankruptcy earlier this month and other locations have reorganized or rebranded their operations.

USA, PA & MD: South County Brewing Co. undergoing major expansion
|
South County Brewing Co. is undergoing a major expansion that will more than triple its brewing capacity as the craft beer maker looks to expand throughout Pennsylvania and into Harford County and northern Baltimore County in Maryland, ydr.com reported on July 29.
The 3-year-old Fawn Grove brewer is adding $250,000 in new equipment imported from Italy that will enable it to increase output to more than 1,000 barrels a year. That's up from the 280 barrels it expects to produce in 2014.
"It's time to go big or go home," said J.R. Heaps, South County's founder, head brewer and one of the brewery's owners.
South County's expansion comes as craft beers continue to gain popularity.
Small, local breweries are becoming regional powerhouses and beers that once could be found only in one part of the country are going national. Craft beers, for example, are among the offerings at the in-store beer cafes Sunbury, Pa.-based Weis Market has opened in some of its Pennsylvania stores.
At Victor's in Spring Garden Township, South County's Black Cowgirl black double IPA, is among the more popular locally made beers on tap, said Zach St. John, the restaurant's front-of-house manager.

The Flying Bison Brewing Company is almost at its new home in Buffalo, wivb.com reported on July 26.
The brewery is moving from Ontario Street, to the Larkin District. On Saturday, July 26 it closed up shop in preparation. It expects to open up again on Seneca Street in September. The new brewery will have a tasting room and beer garden.

USA, SC: Stone Brewing Company not to build new facility in South Carolina
|
Stone Brewing Company will not build a new production facility in South Carolina, WLTX reported on July 25.
South Carolina Commerce Department officials confirmed reports that the brewer decided against sites in our state that included Lexington and Greenville.
Stone Brewing Company is the 10th largest brewer in the nation and is looking to add a facility closer to the East Coast. The facility is expected to bring around $31 million in investments from Stone and could deliver 400 new jobs for the state that lands the deal.
South Carolina lawmakers passed what was dubbed as the "Stone Bill" this session to lure the company. The change in law allows breweries to sell unlimited quantities of beer on sites with restaurant service. The new law also allows brewers to sell beverages other than their own beer. Previous laws limited how much beer a brewery could sell on site.

Can a new brewery thrive in Mobile? For anyone asking the question, there's a precedent that suggests the answer is an enthusiastic "yes:" Fairhope Brewing Co, al.com reported on July 27.
Craft beer is a growth industry in Alabama, but there's a distinct statewide imbalance. At the dawn of 2012, Birmingham and Huntsville had at least a dozen breweries between them. Coastal Alabama had nothing but the memory of the Port City Brewery and two successors, Hurricane Brewing and Mr. Jim's Cannon Brewpub, which had operated between 1991 and 2009 at a location on Dauphin Street.
Brian Kane, one of the founders of Fairhope Brewing, said the Lower Alabama drought worried him a little bit. He and his partners believed there was a thirst for craft beer in the Mobile Bay area, but they did wonder why no one else seemed to be leaping in to fill it. Kane recalls asking himself, "is there something I'm missing?"
The fact is, the Port City Brewery and its successors had operated under some onerous state laws that have since been changed to be much less restrictive. But even so, there seemed to be a bit of a south Alabama stigma.

USA, NY: The Brooklyn Brewery hoping to build new facility on western shore of Staten Island
|
The Brooklyn Brewery is hoping to build a $70 million, 200,000 square-foot facility on the western shore of Staten Island. The new manufacturing center would allow the brewer to produce more beer for sale in overseas markets, according to a draft progress report tracking various large-scale projects penned by the New York City Regional Economic Development Council, an advisory board that is working with the brewer to locate a suitable site. A public forum is scheduled for Monday, August 4 on this and a number of other projects pending before the council, some of which may eventually receive grants or tax incentives from the state, Grain’s New York Business reported on July 28.
"With the support of state and city development agencies, this potential project demonstrates that New York can be a hospitable place for successful manufacturers and exporters," said Eric Ottaway, the brewery's general manager.
The draft report shows the brewery's is seeking a campus with between 20 acres and 25 acres with direct rail access and in relatively close proximity to the New York/New Jersey port system, stipulations that would make Staten Island an ideal location. USA, ME: Tumbledown Brewing to hold its grand opening in Farmington on August 9
|
After a decade of making home brews, Matthew Swan is taking it to the next level by opening Farmington area's only commercial brewery in the Eastside Mall on Farmington Falls Road. A grand opening for Tumbledown Brewing will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 2 to 6 p.m., Daily Bulldog reported on July 28.
It was more than two years ago when Swan of Farmington, started looking for a location to open a small craft brewery around his hours as an employee of Northern Lights Hearth & Sports in Farmington,
"Finding a location was the toughest part," Swan said. He needed a place with a concrete floor, the right drainage, space and utilities, along with frontage on a road with lots of traffic.
After Amy and Nate Morin of Industry purchased the 30-year-old mall a year ago at auction in February, they updated the building's electrical and plumbing systems and painted the exterior. The couple then moved their Black Bear Graphics print shop into the mall.

USA, MI: Wolverine State Brewing Co planning to expand business this year
|
Wolverine State Brewing Co grew its kitchen last year and is planning on expanding the rest of its business this year, Concentrate reported on July 30.
The Ann Arbor-based brewery specializes in producing, which means it requires more time and resources to produce its brews. The 8-year-old craft brewery opened up its own tap room on West Stadium Boulevard in the old Big George's space in 2010. Last December it added a kitchen, which meant it needed to hire another six people to serve as kitchen staff. It now employs 18 people.
"It's like two totally different businesses," says Josh Evans, house manager for Wolverine State Brewing Co. "In terms of the way it runs, the way it looks, it's just so much more polished."
He adds that the expansion prompted Wolverine State Brewing Co to become more professional in its appearance and operations. That is setting the table for an even bigger expansion for the brewery later this year. The firm currently produces 2,200 barrels of beer a year, a number Evans expects to go up significantly next year.
"We plan on ratcheting that up substantially in 2015," Evans says. "We're expanding everything but the retail space. Basically everything you don’t see."

USA, MA: Watch City Brewing appears to be closing down permanently

Watch City Brewing in Waltham, MA appears to be closing down permanently, The Waltham News Tribune reports.
The brewery closed in June, saying it needed repairs. But a restaurant equipment company now says it will auction off the brewery’s equipment. Watch City owes the Department of Revenue for meals taxes, and still owes some employees their wages, the News Tribune reports.
Phone calls to the brewery’s listed number were met with an automated message saying calls could not be received.

France: Winter barley values declining on news of good crop
|
French winter malting barley values are declining on news of an abundant and quality crop, La Depeche reported on July 25.
Industry sources reported several deals closed on winter malting barley of crop 2014, but activity is calmer on spring barley markets. Industry players are waiting for information on the crop’s quality and quantity before making or accepting any offers. Between 15% and 20% of the nation’s spring barley acreage had been harvested as of July 25. The situation on the 2015 crop activity is obscure, La Depeche said.

Africa: Heineken well placed in Africa and Middle East to capture local growth opportunities

According to Mr. Siep Hiemstra, President, Heineken Africa and Middle East, the Dutch brewing giant is well placed in Africa and the Middle East to capture growth opportunities by reaching more consumers through an expanded brand offering, strong market execution, developing local talent and capabilities, and increasing local sourcing, SPY Ghana reported on July 25.
Speaking at Executive Talk programme hosted by China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) African campus on July 24, Mr. Hiemstra also said that through strategic partnerships that are performance driven, Heineken intends to grow further by increasing its market share and also focus on cost discipline to drive profit growth.
A healthy population growth, an emerging middle class and rising urbanization are key growth drivers for beer consumption, according to Mr. Hiemstra. “Africa’s middle class is expected to grow from 355 million in 2010 (34% of Africa’s population) to 1.1 billion (42% of the population) in 2060.” Heineken is set to benefit significantly from this trend through accelerated innovation, building winning brands and activating key enablers of growth. World: Molson Coors Brewing Co. CEO to retire at the end of the year

Molson Coors Brewing Co. Chief Executive Peter S. Swinburn will retire at the end of the year, and the chief of the company's European operations, Mark R. Hunter, will take over, the company announced on July 25.
The move comes weeks after Mr. Swinburn said he wouldn't rule out acquiring SABMiller PLC's 58% stake in U.S. joint venture MillerCoors if it became available. The matter came up because of speculation that the world's biggest brewer, Anheuser-Busch InBev, may try to acquire industry no. 2 SABMiller, a move that might require the divestiture of MillerCoors to satisfy antitrust concerns.
Mr. Swinburn, who is 61 years old and a 40-year beer industry veteran, has been chief executive of the Molson Canadian and Coors Light brewer since 2008.
"Peter has led the company through a period of significant growth and change, with milestones that include the formation of the MillerCoors JV in the U.S., the acquisition of StarBev in Europe, and the development of additional strong and growing global brands," Molson Coors Chairman Peter H. Coors said in a news release. "Simply put, we are a stronger, more global and more dynamic company today as a result of Peter's influence."

UK: Results of Recommended List winter barley varieties trials are announced by HGCA
|
Results from seven trials of Recommended List winter barley varieties are presented this week ranging from Devon in the west, Edinburgh to the north and Norfolk to the east, HGCA reported on July 28.
Average yields remain buoyant in 2014 at 10.02 t/ha which compares well to the five year average of 8.98 t/ha. This is over a tonne/ha better than average at this stage. The Devon site has performed exceptionally well at 10.55 t/ha
Six-row varieties on the HGCA Recommended List still head the table on yields, with the hybrid variety Volume achieving 106% compared to the control varieties, and the conventional variety KWS Meridian 105%.
Two-row feed varieties also continue to perform well. Higher yielding varieties in 2014 include California (103%), KWS Glacier (102%) and KWS Tower (101%). Malting varieties are more about quality than yield, but Talisman have achieved yields 97% and SY venture 95% to date in 2014.
Candidate varieties are also performing well in 2014 trials, including the six-row conventional variety Daxor (105%) and the two-row feed varieties KWS Infinity (101%) and Perseus (100%).

The North Korean government’s efforts to produce better-quality beer seems to be paying off, Voice of America reported on July 29.
Lager produced with Czech Republic technology, expertise, and ingredients is captivating the taste buds of tourists to the communist country, as well as the rich young adults of Pyongyang. That is according to Tomas Novotny of the Czech brewing company Zvu Potez.
“Many Russian and Chinese tourists, as well as North Koreans from Pyongyang travel [to the Rason Special Economic Zone] only to taste this beer,” said Novotny in a telephone interview with the VOA Korean service.
According to Zvu Potez’s website, the company is well-known for beer production expertise. It reportedly has helped build as many as 200 complete breweries and 50 mini-breweries around the globe.
Earlier this month, Martin Kovar, Sales Director at Zvu Potez, said in an interview with local daily Mlada Fronta Dnes that North Korean representatives in the Czech Republic approached his company directly.
“We took the [North Korean] representatives to a few Czech microbreweries, and then they chose a type of beer that appealed to them the most,” Kovar explained.
