The bitterness of humulinones and hulupones
ABSTRACT
Literature tells us that two oxidation products, namely,
humulinones (from alpha-acids) and hulupones (from betaacids)
have a prominent bitter taste. A study by US
researchers assessed their bitterness intensity compared to
that of iso-alpha acids with a trained sensory panel. They
found that iso-alpha-acids are more bitter than hulupones
and that hulupones are more bitter than humulinones. At a
concentration level of 20 ppm in a lager beer base, the
bitterness intensity of iso-alpha-acids was approximately
1.4 times that of hulupones and 1.9 times that of
humulinones. Though not as intensly bitter as iso-alpha
acids, they may contribute to the total beer bitterness.

Canada: Analysts believe Molson Coors’ expanded partnership with Heineken will strengthen market share of above-premium beers
|
Global brewer Molson Coors Brewing Company boasts a strong portfolio of well-established brands, including Coors Light, Molson Canadian, Carling and Staropramen, as well as craft and specialty beers like Blue Moon, Creemore Springs and Cobra. The company focuses on growing its market share through innovation and by shifting its focus on the above-premium category of beers, Zacks reported on August 20.
Recently, Molson Coors and Heineken N.V. expanded their marketing partnership in Canada, whereby Molson Coors Canada will distribute five additional above-premium brands of Heineken including Dos Equis, Sol, Tecate, Birra Moretti and Desperados in Canada starting from Jan 2015.
Over the last two decades, Molson Coors in association with Heineken has been marketing and selling its brands such as Heineken, Murphy’s, Newcastle and Strongbow. In addition, Molson Coors has also agreed to distribute the Coors Light brand in Ireland.
However, analysts note that Molson Coors has been posting negative beer volumes in Canada for quite some time. Since 2001, the premium beer segment in Canada has been gradually losing volume to the above premium and value segments, mainly due to an aging population and a sluggish economy.

USA, WI: St. Francis Brewing Co. assessing new site for expansion
|
St. Francis Brewing Co. is assessing a site in the Menomonee Valley for a long-planned expansion, co-owner Rick Michalski was quoted as saying by Milwaukee Business Journal on August 18.
The company is under contract for a 2-acre parcel at 712-800 W. Canal St., near the Harley-Davidson Museum and the river, he said. The final price will likely come to about $300,000, Michalski said. St. Francis is currently in the midst of a 90-day due diligence process on the land. The site is near land that Lakefront Brewery of Milwaukee was eyeing for a potential brewery before deciding against the site.
A separate brewery has long been part of the plan for St. Francis Brewing Co., which opened its brewpub at 3825 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. in St. Francis in April 2009. It has since considerably ramped up its brewing efforts through an outside contractor, but still wants a manufacturing space of its own.
Following stalled plans to site the brewery in a warehouse near its brewpub, Michalski said St. Francis Brewing hopes to locate its 18,000 to 20,000-square-foot expansion in the Menomonee Valley.

USA, PA: The Kennett Brewing Company opening in September
|
Tucked away on the lower level of 109 S. South Broad Street in Kennett Square, the Kennett Brewing Company (KBC) expects to combine innovative craft beer, local artists and a healthy dose of whimsy to create the Borough’s newest destination, when it opens its doors, The Times of Chester Country reported on August 18.
Scheduled to open in September, KBC will offer house-brewed beers accompanied by a simple seasonal chalkboard menu featuring fresh, local, organic fare and artisans.
Co-owners, Jen Braunstein and Jossy Osborne, are also married to the brewers – Chris Braunstein and Mark Osborne. The local connection is strong as the Braunsteins are also teachers in the Kennett Consolidated School District.
KBC is the product of both the Braunstein’s and Osborne’s more than 13 years of research and experimentation with brewing craft beer. “We’re unique because of our brewers and the beer they create,” says Jen Braunstein, “Mark is into historic English ales, while Chris is into the newer American styles; when the two off them combine their brewing powers, magic happens.”

Canada, ON: Big Rig Brewery to open new production facility in Ottawa soon
|
Ottawa has been kind to the Big Rig Brewery.
So kind that the two-year-old operation has become the fastest growing microbrewery in the city and will soon open a 16,000-square-foot production facility in the west end of the city, with a tasting room and meeting space, as well as second restaurant location in the east end, Ottawa Citizen reported on August 19.
“The Ottawa market has been great. I think there is a lot of room to grow,” said Lon Ladell, head brewer and part owner of Big Rig. “There is still lots of room for good beer.”
The new brewing location, which is hidden away on Schneider Road off Herzberg Road in Kanata, will allow Ladell to increase his production from around 5,000 barrels of beer annually to as much as 25,000 in the years ahead. By contrast, during the first year of operation at the restaurant/brewery located near Ikea off of Pinecrest Road, Ladell pumped out around 1,500 barrels of beer.
Demand for his product has skyrocketed.

USA, CA: Brew Rebellion announces location of new production facility
|
Yucaipa-based Brew Rebellion announced a new production facility to be located near the old Norton Air Force Base. The brewery’s owners expect the plant to open on Oct. 1, Redlands Daily Facts reported on August 19.
The location of Brew Rebellion’s new production facility is especially close to the owner’s heart.
“It’s out there at the old Norton Air Force Base, which is kinda cool, because when I came back from Vietnam in 1970, I landed in a continental airliner not a hundred feet from where I’m putting in this brewery,” said co-founder Ed Parker.
The new facility will supplement the Yucaipa-based microbrewery’s California Street location, adding a 10-barrel brewing system, with 31 gallons per barrel.
Parker says the facility is still in the planning stage, but they intend to open their doors on Oct. 1.
Parker says they want to keep their operation relatively small on the whole, in order to keep their product homegrown.
“Since we’re small, it gives us an opportunity to be flexible and we do over 200 types of beer every year, and it’s fun to do that, and the larger guys, they can’t do that, they really need to focus on doing mass quantity,” said Parker.

USA, OH: Listermann/Triple Digit Brewing Company expanding tap room and brewing capacity
|
Listermann/Triple Digit Brewing Company is expanding both its tap room and its brewing capacity, Cincinnati.com reported on August 19.
Knocking out a wall will double the size of the Evanston brewery's tap room, which currently holds 40-50 people, said Jason Brewer, distribution manager/social media director for the brewery. Current restrooms will be updated, and more will be added.
Paving and sectioning off an area in front of the building will allow the brewery to add outdoor seating.
On the brewing side, two new fermenters will increase capacity about 40 percent, Brewer said.
"Those two fermenters are going to give us the ability to have Chicow! and Nutcase going at all times," he said, adding that the brewery has a wait list of bars and restaurants that want Triple Digit's hazelnut double brown ale and Listermann's peanut butter porter.
The additional capacity will also let the brewery do more experimental beers, he said.
Brewer said construction could start as soon as Labor Day. He hopes to see it complete in time for the brewery's Oktoberfest event, set for the second weekend in October.

USA: Wet August causes “catastrophic” damage to malting barley crop in Idaho
|
The Idaho Barley Commission is seeking to help growers cope with "catastrophic" damage due to a wet August, Capital Press reported on August 19.
Sprout damage caused by monsoonal early August weather has forced Idaho barley growers to divert huge quantities of malt barley to feeder channels, driving down already low feed barley prices.
Tim Pella, an Idaho Barley Commissioner and program manager over Idaho barley operations for Busch Agricultural Resources, said his company’s contracts allow up to 1 percent sprout damage, and he’s seen loads with up to 50 percent sprouting.
Pella said Anheuser-Busch is evaluating the possibility of taking barley with sprout damage above the contract level. Meanwhile, his company has asked growers to store grain in their own bins rather than bringing it into the plant for storage, and to supply samples for laboratory testing.
He said Anheuser-Busch has been accepting only a small amount of good grain. Other major malting companies in Idaho have taken the same approach.
“We should be wrapping up harvest in Eastern Idaho, and instead, we’re still in the early stages,” Pella said.

USA, CA: Green Flash Brewing Co. leases new site to extend its flagship brand
|
Green Flash Brewing Co. has confirmed earlier reports that the Mira Mesa-based brewery has leased a new site in Poway. The 12,275-square-foot space will reportedly be used to extend the Green Flash brand, focusing on the production and distribution of cork and cage beers that are barrel aged and/or bottle conditioned, as well as rare one-off and experimental beers, Eater reported on August 18.
The company, which recently announced that it would establish a presence in Europe, had previously selected the East Village for expansion, but chose not to move forward with that site.
According to local media, the new Poway location will include a tasting room, outdoor beer garden, event space, plus some sort of food component; it's estimated to be operational by early 2015.
Meanwhile, their new East Coast facility in Virginia Beach, VA is moving forward with an official groundbreaking scheduled for October 13 and a scheduled 2016 opening.

USA, MS: Gordon Creek Brewery forced to close its doors for financial reasons
|
One of Hattiesburg's two craft beer breweries has ceased operations, Hattiesburg American reported on August 19.
Gordon Creek Brewery owner and brewer Sam Sorrells said on August 19 he made the decision to close the doors mainly because of financial reasons. The brewery, which is on East Pine Street, released its first batch of beer in May 2013.
"We had started the project with X amount of dollars, and like with most businesses, we had more going out than coming in initially," Sorrells said. "Early on, sales were great and it looked like we would probably get over that point in a couple of years. But craft beer is the kind of thing that's a luxury, when you can buy the macro beers for half as much."
Sorrells said other factors, such as a lack of seasonal sales and production issues, factored into the decision as well.
"Beer is a very cyclical business," he said. "The winter affected us pretty bad — keg beers didn't sell well this winter. And then we had some kegs that leaked early on. So we lost a good bit of product there, and it just took time to get them replaced, and we were losing fast."

USA, MI: Beards Brewery pursuing additional site to house brewing operations
|
Facing production constraints at its downtown Petoskey location, Beards Brewery is pursuing an additional site in Charlevoix to house brewing operations, petoskeynews.com reported on August 20.
Beards announced the expansion plans on August 16, the day of its second-anniversary celebration.
"Essentially, we have just not been able to keep up with demand," said Beards co-owner Ben Slocum.
Beards, which Slocum and Peter Manthei launched in 2012, has a one-barrel brewing system at its Howard Street site in Petoskey. With this limited capacity, Slocum said the brewery has had to carefully plan production to ensure an adequate supply for customers during its taproom's busy summer months. Beer styles that age well, for example, have been brewed and stockpiled many months in advance. The capacity constraints also have forced Beards to turn down some requests from other drinking establishments interested in offering its products on tap.
Beards has secured a 4,000-square-foot space off Ferry Road in Charlevoix, where Slocum said a production system with 15 times the capacity of the Petoskey site will be put in place. Beards hasn't set a firm date to have that location up and running, but Slocum said the operators hope to reach that point by next summer.

Canada, ON: Duggan’s Brewery to open new location in Toronto
|
More than three years after the closure of his original brewpub location on Victoria Street in Toronto, brewmaster Michael Duggan will soon be opening a new street level location of his Duggan’s Brewery in the Parkdale neighbourhood in the city’s west end, Canadian Beer News reported on August 18.
Set to be known as Duggan’s Brewery Parkdale, the new spot at 1346 Queen St. W. – previously home to Japanese restaurant Kanji – will feature a nanobrewery, retail store and restaurant/bar, and is planned to soft launch in September in preparation for an October grand opening.
While construction and installation of the brewhouse is still underway, the bar is operating on a limited “pop-up” basis on Thursday and Saturday evenings, serving several Duggan’s brands – including flagship beers #9 IPA and #5 Sorachi Lager; the returning #13 Hefeweizen that was previously available at the Victoria St. location; and a new strong lager, #46 Parkdale Bomber – as well as the 100 Mile Ale and 100 Mile Lager that Duggan co-brews with Brad Clifford under the Ontario Beer Co. label.

USA, WI: Lakefront Brewery outgrowing current location
|
30 years ago Russ Klisch and his brother starting brewing small batches of beer in their kitchen. Now, Lakefront Brewery is outgrowing its current location, TMJ4 reported on August 20.
"We are busting at the seams as you can tell, behind me we can't put too many more tanks in here," says Klisch.
This year the microbrewery will produce 48,000 barrels of beer. Klisch has plans to expand the production facility to a neighboring property.
Lakefront is just one of many local breweries branching out, thanks to the demand for craft beer.
"I see more coming to Milwaukee and I see more growing the ones that are here. A trend that will continue, and we will need more capacity for its growth," said Lakefront Brewery president Russ Klisch.

USA, WA: Chainline Brewing’s licensing application approved by the Washington State Liquor Control Board
|
A startup craft brewery in Kirkland, Wash. has been cleared for lift-off by the state’s liquor board, Brewbound reported on August 21.
Chainline Brewing’s licensing application was approved by the Washington State Liquor Control Board on August 19, despite prior complaints filed with the city by Kirkland community members, who were concerned that the presence of a new brewery would pose a threat to public safety.
The approval is contingent upon the issuing of its federal brewers notice, Chainline co-founder and owner Scott Holm said, but he said the provision is “standard procedure” at this point.
Now, with contractors lined up and equipment on hand, the new beer company is ready to move forward and plans to open its doors before the end of this year.
“I can’t tell you how relieved I am,” Holm said. “Now we can focus on construction, which should hopefully start later this week.”

USA, NY: Empire Brewing Co. gets a grant to build a facility in Cazenovia
|
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded a $200,000 grant to Empire Brewing Co. in Syracuse to help the company open a brewery and bottling line in Cazenovia, the region's members of Congress said on August 20.
The grant will help Empire Brewing bottle their own beer for the first time with the opening of the Empire Farmstead Brewery next year in Cazenovia. The project includes a European-style beer hall and a farm that will grow much of its own hops, some of its own barley and many of its other beer ingredients. When completed, Empire will be among the state's largest craft beer makers.
The USDA money is part of about $500,000 in grants awarded today to three Central New York farms and Empire Brewing, according to U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and Rep. Dan Maffei, D-Syracuse ,who advocated for the funding from the agency.
The federal aid helps farms generate new products, create and expand marketing opportunities, and increase producer income, according to the members of Congress.

USA, CO: Denver Pearl Brewing Company to change its name
|
In yet another craft brewing trademark dispute, three-month-old Denver Pearl Brewing Company announced on August 20 it would change its name after two other breweries – one national and one local – raised concerns about similarities with their brands, First Drafts reported.
General manager and owner Colby Rankin said the brewery did research and conferred with lawyers before settling on the name (the brewery opened in June on Pearl Street in Denver’s Platt Park neighborhood). He said the brewery was aware “Pearl” had been used in brewing but thought it was on solid ground because Pearl Brewing in San Antonio, Texas, closed in 2001.
Pabst Brewing Co., however, still produces Pearl and Pearl Light beer in Fort Worth, Texas, for distribution in Texas and Oklahoma, and attorneys with Pabst threatened legal action, Rankin said.
Pabst representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The first concerns, however, were voiced by a local brewery Rankin said he did not want to identify. Ireland: Heineken becomes Ireland’s top lager brand in H1 2014
|
Heineken has revealed that it has become Ireland’s top lager brand, The Irish Times reported on August 20.
In a statement, Heineken said that the Irish beer market is “mirroring the tiered economic recovery which the country is currently experiencing”.
“On trade growth is very much focused in the Dublin and suburban areas, with rural areas west and north west of the country very much behind the capital”.
Noting that “serious challenges” remain for rural pubs in the current tiered marketplace recovery as suburban outlets near large cities continue to buck the trends, Heineken called on the government to help the Irish pub sector in the form of a reversal of recent beer excise increases, lower rates of both VAT and water charges in the sector.
Overall, the brewer increased its volume share of the Irish beer market to 28 per cent in the first half of the year, primarily through the Heineken branded product. One in every two pints of lager consumed in the pub now comes from the Heineken Ireland portfolio, while one third of all consumer spend on lager is focused on the Heineken brand.

Russia: Carlsberg to put less beer in bottles and reduce packaging size

Carlsberg, the biggest brewer in Russia, plans to put less beer in bottles and reduce the size of some products in order to avoid increasing prices in Russia, where the beer market is shrinking, RT.com reported on August 21.
The initiative applies to half of Carlsberg’s Russian production and is intended to stabilize its business in Russia, which is facing food inflation and high taxes.
It means that “we don’t have to increase prices as much, because then we can keep the same price points but lower volumes a little,” Bloomberg quotes Joergen Buhl Rasmussen, the Carlsberg’s CEO, in a telephone interview made after the Danish brewer cut its full-year outlook because of shrinking demand in Russia.
To boost Russian sales the company will also introduce new products such as Seth & Riley’s Garage, an alcoholic lemon drink, and sponsor a hockey league.
A third of Carlsberg’s profit comes from the Russian Baltika brand. Sales in Russia are likely to fall in the second half of the year, as distributors are cutting orders. This is “due to the recent macro events, the consumer sentiment, and the outlook for some of the economies in Eastern Europe are becoming increasingly challenging and uncertain,” the company explained

Myanmar: Heineken secures permit for nationwide distribution of certain products

Tax advisory firm VDB Loi has assisted Heineken, and its subsidy Asia Pacific Brewery, to secure a permit for the nationwide distribution of certain products in Myanmar, Asian Legal Business reported on August 22.
The awarding of the permit marks the first time that the Myanmar Investment Commission, the country’s investment regulator, has allowed a foreign company to distribute its products in Myanmar.

India: Government proposes to make state of Kerala alcohol-free in 10 years
|
The excise policy of the Congress-led United Democratic Front government, finalized in a two-hour meeting held at the chief minister's official residence on August 21, proposed to make Kerala alcohol-free in 10 years, The Times of India reported.
"The UDF has come out with a unanimous decision for a liquor ban in the state to achieve total prohibition,'' chief minister Oommen Chandy said after the meeting. The UDF recommendation will be shortly ratified by the state cabinet following which it would be conveyed to the Kerala High Court as a policy decision.
As a first step, 418 bars, closed since April 1 as they had failed to upgrade to two-star facilities, won't have their licenses renewed. Similarly, licenses of 312 functioning bars in the state won't be renewed after March 31, 2015. The government will also seek the legal possibility of terminating the licenses of these 312 bars immediately.
From April 1, 2015, only five star hotels - there are 23 in the state - will be granted bar licenses. The excise policy draft is mum on the status of 111 beer/wine parlours in the state, but sources in the UDF said they will be allowed to function.
