A new approach to hop freshness

ABSTRACT
Chinese researchers propose a new way to evaluate hop freshness, the HFI (Hop Freshness Index). The hitherto established method is the HSI (Hop storage index) where the degradation of alpha and beta acids is measured with absorbance reading. The determination of the HFI is based on the content of alpha, beta and iso-alpha acids measured by a new HPLC method. Within their trials they also discovered that the degradation of alpha (and beta) acids is hop variety dependent.

Brewery news USA, OH: Ohio now has more than 100 breweries
Ohio has topped a significant milestone - 100 - for its number of breweries, a feat not many states can boast, ohio.com reported on September, 26.

The state now is home to 103 breweries, more than double the number from just three years ago, according to a Beacon Journal analysis of brewing licenses the state has issued.

“It’s a landmark; it’s 100,” said Mary MacDonald, executive director of the Ohio Craft Brewers Association. “That’s super exciting.”

Operations range from national brewers Anheuser-Busch InBev in Columbus and MillerCoors in Trenton to small brewers such as MadCap Brew Co. in Stow and Franklin Brewing Co. in Elyria.

Brewery growth, which is occurring nationwide, is attributed mainly to the public’s increasing fondness for craft beer.

But the state also has eased regulations for craft brewers in recent years, making it easier to open a brewery. Those changes include allowing them to open tasting rooms without buying a second license and lowering the cost of an annual license from $3,906 to $1,000.

It doesn’t hurt, either, that consumers are more interested in locally made products.

“We’re probably in 15 to 20 places now and just the fact that we’re local gets us that first pull from the tap,” said Ryan Holmes, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Highland Brewing announces $5 mln facility expansion
Highland Brewing is investing $5 mln into a facility expansion that will enable the company, which is based in Asheville, N.C., to boost annual capacity by 60,000 barrels and create additional jobs, brewbound.com reported on September, 26.

Backed by bank loans and some gradual tax incentives offered up by the Economic Development Coalition for Asheville-Buncombe County (EDC), the brewery plans to occupy an additional 30,000 sq. ft. of its current building with new tanks and a bottling line.

Highland also plans to gradually expand its distribution as a result of the expansion, though brewery founder Oscar Wong said the company doesn’t have aspirations to go much wider with its current footprint of nine states.

“We just added [Kentucky and Ohio], so this will help us take care of those two states,” he said. “In a way it’s kind of enhancing what we have.”

Highland is forecasting sales of 40,000 barrels this year, a 15 percent uptick over 2013 numbers, said Wong.

Though the company is growing, the expansion is all about keeping up with increased competition in the region, namely that of craft stalwarts like Sierra Nevada and Oskar Blues, which have recently opened secondary brewing facilities in the area.

“We’re just trying to stay up ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Russian River Brewing to temporarily shift Pliny the Elder production to central California
Pliny the Elder, one of the country’s most highly rated brews, will be temporarily produced in central California next year as Russian River Brewing Co. upgrades the equipment at its Santa Rosa brewery, pressdemocrat.com reported on September, 29.

Firestone Walker Brewing Co., located in Paso Robles, will brew Pliny next February when Russian River installs new brewing equipment at its facility off Santa Rosa Avenue, which produces about 11,000 barrels annually. Its downtown brewpub, which produces 3,000 barrels annually, will not be affected.

Firestone Walker will brew Pliny for draft distribution only, and bottled Pliny will continue to come from its existing inventory in Russian River’s fermenters, according to co-owner Natalie Cilurzo.

“It is merely swapping out our current ancient 50-barrel brewhouse to a brand new more efficient one,” Natalie said. “If anything, we will probably make better beer from the (new) brewery.”

She stressed again that Russian River has no expansion plans as she and her husband, brewmaster Vinnie Cilurzo, pay down debt after buying out all of their outside investors.

The Cilurzos have insisted their priority is maintaining the high quality of their beers rather than expansion.

Vinnie will work with Firestone Walker’s brewmaster, Matt Brynildson, during the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Moo-Duck Brewery to open in Elizabethtown
Mike Brubaker started as a home brewer and this fall will open Moo-Duck Brewery in Elizabethtown with his wife, Kristen, pennlive.com reported on September, 24.

Mike Brubaker follows a culinary approach when it comes to his Moo-Duck Brewery small-batch craft beers.

Among the Elizabethtown brewery's line-up is a Honey Basil Blonde. The blonde ale is brewed with fresh basil.

There are others such as Hopricot Hoppy Apricot Pale Ale and Sticky Nuts Maple Pecan Brown as well as traditional releases including a Hoppy Toad IPA and Purple Carp Irish Red.

In October, the public will be able to sit down and sip Brubaker's beers when Moo-Duck's taproom opens.

Moo-Duck is opening as a handful of other micro brewers enter the midstate. This year, Alter Ego Brewing in midtown Harrisburg is expected to open and later this fall Molly Pitcher Brewing will open in Carlisle.

They join several dozen brewers in the region, ranging from Troegs Brewing Company in Hershey to the Brewery at Hershey in Londonderry Twp.

For the past couple of years, Brubaker and his wife, Kristen, have worked to make Moo-Duck a reality.

Like most start-up brewers, Mike Brubaker fell into brewing as a hobby crafting beer for home brewing competitions and festivals.

Brewery news USA, FL: Swamp Head Brewery begins construction of new brewery
Swamp Head Brewery expands in the coming months to a new location, alligator.org reported on September, 24.

Construction for the new brewery broke ground about two months ago. The new facility will be about 13,000 square feet, increasing its capacity tenfold.

Swamp Head marketing manager Brandon Nappy said he expects the new building to be up and running by the end of December.

“It will allow us the opportunity to grow and work on projects that we have wanted to move forward with for years,” Nappy said.

Swamp Head was founded in 2008 and started selling its beer the year after. The company was brewing 700 barrels of beer by 2010.

By last year, Swamp Head was brewing nearly 6,000 barrels. Nappy said the expansion could bring Swamp Head to the verge of about 50,000 barrels each year.

“The new brewery will allow us to have much more flexibility with production,” he said, “so we can play around with new brands.”

Brewery news USA, MN: Maple Island Brewing Company opens in downtown Stillwater
Maple Island Brewing Company opened in downtown Stillwater, stillwatercurrent.com reported on September, 29.

The new microbrewery and taproom will open featuring six brews.

Frank Fabio and Brewmaster Nick Brau plan to produce 42 barrels of beer every three weeks, or about 730 kegs a year.

Maple Island Brewing Company’s flagship brews are lCoffee Oatmeal Stout, Killer Kolsch and Maple Island IPA. The brews will be sold in pints to enjoy onsite, and in growlers to go.

Brewery news USA, NY: Four Mile Brewing to open by spring
Four Mile Brewing is not opening this fall as originally planned. But the brewery will be churning out craft suds soon enough, oleantimesherald.com reported on September, 27.

“Right now, we’re just waiting for some finances to get in order,” said Gregg Piechota, Four Mile’s founder and head brewer. “But we are still planning to open. I know a lot of people have heard that we’re not, but we are. We’re looking at opening at some point in the spring.”

Currently, Mr. Piechota is waiting to find out if the brewery will get a $90,000 grant from the state to continue work renovating the facility.

“We’re hoping to hear something in October,” he said. “We’d like to use the money to buy a growler filling machine and other equipment for our tap room.”

In the coming weeks, giant holding tanks that can store as much as 930 gallons of beer are expected to be delivered to the brewery followed by fermentation tanks and other beer brewing equipment in December.

Mr. Piechota hopes to start brewing test batches in January and hold several soft-opening events.

“We really want to hold our grand opening in the spring,” he said. “That’ll give us time to get ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, DE: Mispillion River Brewing beers to be distributed by N.K.S.
N.K.S. Distributing has acquired the rights to the Mispillion River Brewing brand in Delaware, brewbound.com reported on September, 26.

Mispillion River Brewing, brewers of Beach Bum Joe and Reach Around IPA, have made a name for themselves in Delaware for the variety of draft beers they have brewed. In the ten months they have been opened, they brewed over 90 different styles of beer. They began distributing many of their libations in the State of Delaware in January 2014 and they will now be joining the N.K.S. craft beer portfolio, which contains Sam Adams, New Belgium, and Evolution.

President Eric Williams stated, “We made the decision to go with NKS Distributing because their philosophy matched ours. They offer the best service in the industry, employ an incredibly professional staff, and fulfill their mission in a manner that recognizes how important the quality of our beer is to us.”

N.K.S. has already begun to distribute Mispillion River Brewing beers and they will be available throughout Delaware.

Brewery news USA, NJ: Forgotten Boardwalk Brewing to open in Cherry Hill
Forgotten Boardwalk Brewing Company will open on October, 11 in Cherry Hill, philly.com reported on September, 29.

Jamie Queli is behind the taproom and brewery with a 30-barrel brewing system.

The tap room's eight tap handles will have four Forgotten Boardwalk mainstay beers, plus four brewers’ choice beers, all of which are produced on premises.

Head brewer David Bronstein spent eight years with Sly Fox Brewing Company.

Visitors may also purchase Forgotten Boardwalk’s two flagship beers in cans, to go. The two flagship beers are “1916 Shore Shiver,” an India pale ale, and “What the Butler Saw,” an undressed wit beer.

Brewery news USA, AR: Tanglewood Branch Beer Co. to close this week
South Fayetteville brew pub Tanglewood Branch Beer Co. announced that they will close their doors for good sometime this week, fayettevilleflyer.com reported on September, 29.

“It is with much sadness that we must announce the closing of our beloved pub,” stated the owners. “We have lost our lease and moving to a new location is out of the question, so we are forced to cease operations. We will continue to sell beer through the month of September then close for good sometime next week. I appreciate all of you who believed in the dream of bringing craft beer to South Fayetteville. I fear we were a bit ahead of our time. Thank you again for your support over these last three years. It was a heckuva ride.”

The pub opened in September 2011, and debuted its first brews in May 2012.

The pub made a similar announcement in December 2013, but 113 people donated over $21,000 via a Kickstarter campaign in a grass roots effort to save the neighborhood pub.

Those efforts, it appears, only helped to extend the life of the business for about nine months.

Brewery news Germany: Craft beer trend finally taking off
In Germany, home of Oktoberfest and a five-century-old brewing law, beer consumption has been on an unstoppable decline, prompting Europe’s biggest producer of the beverage to turn to an unlikely place for help: the U.S., Bloomberg reported on October, 1.

Oliver Lemke has been making trips to Colorado, New York and California, learning how craft brewers grabbed a sizable portion of the U.S. market. Lemke, who says his American counterparts have taught him to be bolder and experiment with new categories, is now expanding his Berlin brewery as the trend reaches Germany, where the number of micro breweries has increased by more than 30 percent since 2005 to about 670.

“We Germans were convinced we’re making the world’s best beer but meanwhile, beer diversity suffered,” Lemke said while sipping his newest creation, an India Pale Ale with a hint of grapefruit and mango. “Craft brewing is a lucrative and interesting niche and it was a mistake not to do it earlier.”

Germany, home to the world’s oldest active brewery started by Bavarian monks a thousand years ago, is synonymous with beer and the country’s 8 billion-euro ($10 billion) industry. Yet consumption and output in Germany - which has beer gardens in cities such ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Selling of shares by AB InBev officials over the past two weeks undermines speculation it plans to buy SABMiller - report
Anheuser-Busch InBev officials sold shares in the company worth more than 9 million euros over the past two weeks, further undermining speculation the world's largest brewer is planning to buy SABMiller, Reuters reported on September 26.

Chief Strategy Officer Jo Van Biesbroeck and directors Paulo Lemann and Stefan Descheemaeker sold shares between Sept. 16 and 19, the days after frenzied speculation about a major beer deal, according to data from the Belgian financial markets regulator.

Share trading by key company insiders is strong evidence that AB InBev was not planning to buy the world's second biggest beer maker at the time. A person with knowledge of such an acquisition would not be allowed to trade.

Dutch brewer Heineken, the world's third largest brewer, said on Sept. 14 it had been approached by SABMiller, but that its controlling shareholder intended to keep the company independent.

The move by SABMiller was seen as a way of protecting itself from a potential takeover by global leader AB InBev and sparked share price rises for all the major brewers.

The Wall Street Journal said on Sept. 15 that AB InBev was talking to banks about funding a possible $122 billion takeover. AB InBev shares rose 2.8 percent that day, ...More info on site

Brewery news Ukraine & China: Obolon Brewery planning to expand on China’s beer market
Ukraine’s Obolon Brewery intends to expand significantly its presence on the Chinese beer market and set up own production facility in China, Pivnoe Delo reported on September 29 citing the company’s General Manager Igor Bulakh.

“This year we have already shipped to China around 60 containers (of 25 thousand cans each), and next year we plan to export to China 200-300 containers,” he said. According to Mr. Bulakh, the company entered the Chinese market in 2012 and is already a well-known brand there.

“We are well represented in southern China, less – in Shanghai and are just about to enter the market in Beijing,” he said.

The CEO noted that owing to the increasing sales volume in the country, Obolon has initiated negotiations on setting up a joint venture and buying a brewery in northern China.
