A new approach to hop freshness
ABSTRACT
Chinese researchers propose a new way to
evaluate hop freshness, the HFI (Hop Freshness
Index). The hitherto established method is the HSI
(Hop storage index) where the degradation of alpha
and beta acids is measured with absorbance reading.
The determination of the HFI is based on the content
of alpha, beta and iso-alpha acids measured by a
new HPLC method. Within their trials they also
discovered that the degradation of alpha (and beta)
acids is hop variety dependent.

USA, MI: Founders Brewing Co. planning $35 mln expansion project
|
Founders Brewing Co. is planning a $35 million expansion project that will double the size of its Grand Rapids facility to occupy a city block, The Republic reported on October 1.
The craft brewery on October 2 was intending to seek roughly $5.2 million in reimbursement through tax capture funds from the city's Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, the Grand Rapids Press reported. The expansion will give the brewery the capacity to make 900,000 barrels of beer annually. It expects to have produced about 270,000 barrels by the end of 2014.
"We're fast-tracking this," said Mike Stevens, CEO of Founders. "We're trying to move forward on this as quickly as we can."
But the project depends on city and state assistance, Stevens said.
"We do need the support of the city," he said. "We need this whole city block to produce the kind of volume we need to produce effectively."
Founders is planning to seek assistance from the state's Business Development program, as well as request tax breaks for industrial facilities, according to city documents.
Members of the city economic development staff have recommended approval of a third amendment to the brewery's original agreement, which dates back to 2007.

USA, NY: New craft brewery opened in Hammondsport area

A new craft brewery opened in the Hammondsport area Sept. 26, Stargazette reported.
Steuben Brewing Co. is owned and operated by James and Candice Zimar and their sons Rick and Chad Zimar. SBC is a New York State Farm Brewery, meaning that at least 20 percent of their ingredients are locally produced.
The brewery offers flights of beers to taste and sells by the pint and half pint. Customers can enjoy beer while overlooking Keuka Lake and tour the brewery. Wine from Seneca Lake’s Prejean Winery will soon be available for tasting.
Steuben Brewing Co. is located at 10286 Judson Rd in Hammondsport on the Keuka Lake wine trail and is open year-round.

USA, CA: Strike Brewing Co. launching Bay Area warehouse taproom and brewery on October 4
|
Strike Brewing Co. is launching its Bay Area warehouse taproom and brewery on Friday, October 4th, Brewbound informs.
The event will feature the Strike Brewing Co. year-round lineup (Blonde, Brown, IPA & Imperial Red) plus four seasonal additions (Oktoberfest, Chin Music, Double IPA & Porter).
The San Jose based company is partnering with the US Pain Foundation, an organization that brings support to those living with chronic pain, to create awareness. Brewery tours will be offered at 3, 4 & 5pm and there will be live music by Them Rounders.
The event is located conveniently near the San Jose Giant’s stadium, San Jose State University stadium, and the Santa Clara Fairgrounds, and is open for anyone 21 and over from 2 pm to 8pm.
Strike Brewing Company makes thirst-quenching, “session” beers as well as seasonal and specialty brews. On pace to produce 1,000 barrels this year, they are distributed all over the Bay Area and various parts of Southern California. The warehouse taproom and brewery are located in San Jose, California.

USA, IN: Drewrys Brewing Company to establish headquarters in downtown South Bend
|
Drewrys Brewing Company is establishing its headquarters in downtown South Bend, Indiana where it eventually plans to make all of the beer, WSBT 22 reported on October 2.
The old Inwoods Department Store on South Michigan Street is just across the street from the downtown post office.
In addition to the brewing facility, there will be a tasting room and a café with Asian-inspired food as well as European dishes.
There's also going to be a museum with Drewrys memorabilia and stories from the prohibition days.
All three floors plus the basement will be used.
Drewrys hopes to produce about 100,000 barrels a year. The goal is to open the doors in six months.
Renovation work will begin immediately starting inside at the front of the building with the café, museum and tasting room.
South Bend's Deputy Mayor Mark Neal says, "Great to see someone taking it over and looking to again reignite a brand that has been a part of South Bend's history."
Nearby businesses say they are looking forward to Drewrys opening because they're hoping it will attract even more people downtown.

USA, MI: The Fetch Brewing Company already serving beer in Whitehall
|
There's another new brewery in Muskegon County, this one in the town of Whitehall, WZZM reported on October 2.
The Fetch Brewing Company started serving beer to customers this week. The brewery is inside the former State Bank building on Colby Street.
The Whitehall couple behind the brewery has been transforming the historic downtown building for more than two years. A team of local artists designed the brewery and even turned the old vault into a lounge where customers can enjoy the brews.
"We just let them go crazy on that," Dan Hain said. "It is our Penny Lounge; it is a 1912 vault and all 25,000 pennies are glued down individually -- so it was a huge task that took a long time."
The bank building had been vacant since the 80's.
The brewery does not serve food, but does allow customers to bring food from other businesses inside.
They serve beer starting around noon every day.

USA, MI: The Upper Hand Brewery already operational
|
The Upper Hand Brewery in Escanaba has begun production. In the morning on September 30 they were brewing their third batch, Upper Michigan’s Source reported.
They are starting with three core brands, an Upper Hand Lager, UPA, and Escanaba Black Beer. They are eventually hoping to incorporate seasonal beers as well. The new facility can produce about 10,000 kegs a year, and they hope to be brewing at capacity within 2015.
"I love that to get this beer you have to come and spend that money in the Upper Peninsula," says production manager Sam Reese. "I like that that money stays here and that circulates here and it represents something about the Upper Peninsula."
Yoopers can expect to see the keg beers in their local bars by the end of the month.

Canada, ON: Cartwright Springs Brewery intends to open in Ontario this month
|
Ontario beer news website Mom’n’Hops reports that a new brewery is aiming to open later this year in a village near Ottawa.
Cartwright Springs Brewery is setting up shop in Pakenham, just over a half-hour west of Ottawa in the National Capital Region. Founded by business partners André Rieux and Eduardo Guerra, the brewery will produce beer using water from springs in the nearby namesake Cartwright Creek.
Four brands are planned to be available at launch including Smash IPA (“a delicious blend of citrus and floral aromas”), Kölsch (“lower alcohol and moderate bitterness”), American Pale Ale (“classic American hoppy bitterness that is balanced by relatively high alcohol content”) and Chiflado (“a hint of blackcurrant in this well rounded nutty ale”).
Cartwright Springs Brewery is intending to be open by October.

Canada, ON: Mash Paddle Brewing under construction in Brantford, ON
|
Brant News reports that a new nano-brewery is currently under construction in Artisans’ Village, a former industrial site in Brantford, Ontario that is being redeveloped as a district for independent artists and artisans.
Mash Paddle Brewing is being founded by husband and wife Teddy & Nicole Scholten and their friend Matty Buzanko, with the latter serving as head brewer.
According to the article, the 3,000-square-foot space will be the brewing grounds for four flagship beers including a traditional dark beer, a standard pale ale, an India Pale Ale and a stout. Seasonal beers will also be available and could include flavours like pumpkin spice in the winter and a cherry or peach infusion in the summer brewed using fruit from local farmers.
Mash Paddle is expected to open in January, and will feature a tasting room serving glasses and samples to try on-site, as well as bottles for take home sales, and kegs for local bars and restaurants.

South Korea: Hite catching up fast with beer industry’s front-runner Oriental Brewery
|
Competition is flaring up in South Korea’s beer market as the No. 2 player Hite is catching up fast with the front-runner Oriental Brewery, Korea IT Times reported on October 2.
Hite is accelerating marketing efforts in recent days to take advantage of Oriental Brewery’s recent “bad odor” scandal arising from the strong-smelling substance in the company’s flagship brand Cass beer.
According to a local discount store which compiled the sales of beers by brand during the period from September 1 to 29, Oriental Brewery had a share of 46.9 percent, followed by Hite Jinro with 38.3 percent, and Lotte Liquor with 14.8 percent.
Considering that the gap between Oriental Brewery and Hite averaged at 30.4 percentage points during the January-April period of this year, Hite narrowed the gap to 8.6 percentage points. For the first time in three years, the Oriental Brewery/Hite market share gap is narrowed to a single digit figure.

Greece: Beer showing resistance to overall decline in alcoholic beverages market
|
In Greece, beer is showing robust resistance to the overall decline in the alcoholic beverages market, the latest statistics have shown.
Beer sales posted an increase in the first seven months of the year both in the so-called warm market (supermarkets, small retail points etc) and the cold market (restaurants, entertainment venues etc). Given that the data do not include the rest of the summer, it is possible that the rise in beer sales will be far greater for the whole of the year thanks to the country’s record tourism arrivals, Balkans.com reported on October 3.
IRI research data showed beer market turnover in the year to end-July to have reached 123.4 million euros at retail chains and small sales points (such as kiosks), recording 1.4 percent growth from the same period in 2013.
There was also a 3.2 percent increase in sales volume, which reached 58.1 million liters.
In addition, there was a remarkable 1.1 percent yearly rise in consumption at catering establishments, in contrast to the rest of the alcohol market reports Kathimerini.

UK: Report shows discontinuing beer duty escalator very beneficial to beer industry
|
The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) has released its ‘Cheers 2014’ report, detailing how consecutive beer duty cuts have created 16,000 jobs and boosted beer sales, at very little cost to the Government. The report, produced in partnership with CAMRA and SIBA, was presented to Chancellor George Osborne at the Conservative Party Conference, along with a new, special-edition beer, ‘George’s Budget Booster’, to celebrate the benefits of the duty cut.
On the report itself, the BBPA commissioned Oxford Economics to examine the impact of the Budget decision to discontinue the beer duty escalator and cut two consecutive pennies off a pint in 2013 and 2014. It is forecast that by next year an additional 16,000 more people will work in the sector than if the escalator had remained in place.
The successive cuts have boosted beer sales by over 500 million pints, and channeled an extra £44 million in capital investment (alongside over £400 million already planned) into the brewing and pub sector.

Nigeria: Beer consumers becoming increasingly price-conscious
|
Nigerian beer consumers are becoming increasingly price-conscious and are opting more for products in the value segment, which are more affordable than the well-known mainstream brands, Business Day reported on October 3.
The shift is prompting brewers into the innovation of new value brands and increased spending on advertising, with a view to establishing and maintaining a positive impact on the customers’ hearts and minds.
Analysts identify factors that drive consumer demand for the value beer segment as advertisement, peer group influence and situational variation, among others.
Value beer products are low-cost brands, or brands which are cheaper and more affordable to low-income consumers. In Nigeria, prices of most beer brands in this segment range between N150 and N170 per bottle.
On the other hand, mainstream or premium beer brands are often readily available and appealing to the general public, as opposed to being of interest only to a very specific subset of the market. Prices of mainstream or premium beer brands are upwards of N200, say experts.
Jude Fejokwu, principal analyst, Thaddeus Africa Independent Research, says the trend has mostly affected Guinness Nigeria, whose sales declined in the country due to the emergence of a more price-aware and sensitive consumer base.

Vietnam: Proposed ban on sidewalk alcohol sales withdrawn by Ministry of Industry and Trade
|
Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade has withdrawn its proposed ban on sidewalk alcohol sales following widespread criticism, Thanh Nien News reported on October 2.
Pham Chi Dung, director of the ministry’s light industry department, said they shelved the proposal following several discussions on the draft decree on producing and trading alcohol products.
“It is illegal to occupy sidewalks for trading in many places and beer is just one of many products being sold in this manner,” he said, echoing a criticism raised during internal reviews of the proposal.
“Other controversial proposals were also eliminated, including banning the sale of alcohol to pregnant and breastfeeding women and people who exhibit “signs of being drunk and/or diseased due to alcohol abuse.”
Instead, the ministry called for a new rule mandating warning labels on beer, he said.
Dung said the ministry would also continue to seek a law barring the sale of alcohol to people under 18 years old.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade’s proposed ban had drawn virulent criticism for being ill-conceived and unfeasible.
