1.3-pentadiene in hops
ABSTRACT
Of course hops deliver beautiful flavours into beer. But
once in a while something not so appealing is detected as
well. These US researchers identified 1,3-pentadiene in
commercial CO2 hop extract and hop pellets. The
compound was initially thought to be a contaminant from
either the process or packaging but has now been shown to
be a naturally derived degradation product of hop acids.
The researchers were also able to propose a plausible
mechanism for its formation from alpha or beta hop acids
that can be also transferred into beer. This substance is
described as an fusel oil-like off flavor. However threshold
values in beer are unknown so the impact on flavor yet has
to be investigated.

Canada: Molson Coors volumes will not be hit by end of partnership with SABMiller
|
Global brewer Molson Coors Brewing Company operates in Canada through Molson Coors Canada; in the U.S. through MillerCoors; across Europe through Molson Coors Europe; and outside these core markets through Molson Coors International.
In Canada, the company distributed beer brands under license from Heineken N.V., which sells and brews beer worldwide, and SABMiller Plc, the world's second-largest brewing company and one of the world's largest bottlers of The Coca-Cola Company.
However, last week, Molson Coors Canada and Miller Brewing Company, a subsidiary of SABMiller, mutually decided to end their partnership. The litigation arose in Toronto, Canada over the sales of Miller’s beer brands in Canada, including Millers Genuine Draft, Miller Lite and Miller High Life. SABMiller will regain the rights to distribute Miller trademark brands in Canada, effective from Apr 1, 2015. Molson Coors will still distribute beers in the U.S. through MillerCoors, which is a joint venture of Molson Coors and SABMiller.
While Molson Coors Canada ended one partnership, it expanded its marketing partnership with Heineken N.V. in Canada in August. Under the expanded deal, Molson Coors Canada will distribute five additional above-premium brands of Heineken including Dos Equis, Sol, Tecate, Birra Moretti and Desperados in the country, starting Jan 2015.

Australia: Craft beer sales up by 48% in 2011-2013
|
Australians are continuing to turn away from beer. Sales as a proportion of all alcohol sold decreased to 41 per cent last year, compared to 75 per cent in the early sixties, News.com. au reported on October 16.
While the big players may not yet be drowning their sorrows, with craft estimated to be only about 2.5 to 3 per cent of the total Australian beer market in volume terms, sales of the boutique variety, admittedly off a low base, grew by 48 per cent in 2011-2013.
The same trend has already been witnessed in the United States, where sales were up 17.2 per cent last year as total beer sales fell two per cent.
Joel Connolly, from Sydney Craft Beer Week, says the Australian industry is in its infancy compared to the US.
A decade ago, people didn't care so much about where their beer came from, Mr Connolly says.
"It had nothing to do with the flavour of the beer. Now people are starting to switch that up and they are starting to care about quality and flavour, and how it's produced."

Hong Kong: Local craft beers finally starting to take off

Just two years ago if you asked your neighbourhood publican for a Hong Kong brew, they most likely would have shrugged and steered you towards an import instead. Or if they had scrounged up a locally produced beer, you would probably have wished they hadn't. How the times have changed. Hong Kong is a little late to the party, but local craft beers are starting to take off.
Not only are the city's mushrooming specialist pubs proudly serving a selection of made-in-Hong Kong beers, local craft operations are producing microbrews that can stand up to the hottest labels from the US and Europe.
The leader of the pack is arguably Hong Kong Beer Company, which is coming into its own under new ownership.
Established in 1995 as the South China Brewing Company, it used to be known more for producing lacklustre brews. A name change in 2003 did nothing to improve its reputation until the brewery was sold this year to Devin Kimble and Daniel Flores, founders of Brewerkz Restaurant & Microbrewery in Singapore.
