ABSTRACT
We want too much from hops, but cannot get
everything. If we use pellets or cones for bittering we
lose some of the aroma, and as we try to save the
aroma we more or less lose the bitter acids. These
Japanese researchers propose a system to hop more efficiently. It is a system called PIE (Pre-isomeriser
and evaporator) - an extra vessel where the hops are
boiled with water. Its first application was to improve
bitter utilization, but it can also be used for a more
efficient late hop dosing with no detrimental effect
on hop aroma!

Costa Rica: Craft beer industry enjoying great success and growth
|
Great success and growth has taken place for the craft beer brewing industry in Costa Rica. This is obvious through data received from craft beer festivals that have taken place in the country, The Costa Rica News reported on October 28.
For the first festival in 2012, only 350 tickets were sold and 500 people were left out of the event. In the second, participation increased to 750 entries. For the 2014 event, 1,100 tickets were sold, and the fairgrounds eventually hosted a total of 3,000 people that came.
The distribution companies are unable to cope with the new beer demand that’s growing faster than they can keep up with. Several are incorporated; among these are Costa Rica Craft, The Brotherhood, and Treintaycinco Meadery, to name a few. However, there are many others in the process of legalization as well as many bars or pubs that offer their own beer onsite, such as Volcano Brewing and Bribri Springs.

Haiti: Heineken’s sustainability strategy benefiting farmers in Haiti and other countries
|
Heineken’s sustainability strategy is called "Brewing a Better Future," and local sourcing is an important part of it. To that end, Heineken has committed to buying locally sourced sorghum in Haiti, Justmeans.com reported on October 28.
In 2012, Heineken consolidated its majority ownership of Brasserie Nationale d’Haiti S.A. (BRANA). Heineken invested about $20 million in constructing a fifth production line that launched in December 2013 and allowed BRANA to double bottled beer output. Another $20 million will go towards expansion of the brew house that BRANA will inaugurate in December.
In 2012, BRANA launched the Smallholders Alliance for Sorghum in Haiti (SMASH) at the Clinton Global Initiative Summit in New York. SMASH addresses issues like poor soil quality and efficient harvest yields. Last year, BRANA signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the US Agency for International Development (USAID). BRANA invested $3.4 million into SMASH and committed to sourcing locally produced sorghum to produce Malta H. Haitian farmers have increased sorghum yields by 100 percent and almost doubled their incomes as a result.

Russia: Analysts warn of possible 15-20% decline in wheat output
|
Concerns over Russia's grain prospects deepened as SovEcon, foreseeing a fall of some 15-20% in wheat output, warned on October 24 that the depreciating rouble threatened hopes of strong spring sowings offsetting losses in the vulnerable winter crop.
The influential analysis group, in its first forecasts for Russia's 2015 grain harvest, warned that total grains output may fall below 90 mln tonnes, from the level of 103 mln – 105 mln tonnes achieved this year.
The wheat harvest, which this year hit 58 mln – 59 mln tonnes, may drop below 50 mln tonnes, SovEcon said.
The forecast reflected the "extremely weak condition" of autumn-sown grains, which the Moscow-based group rated at 62 points on an index drawn from NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) data, and where 100 points is the long-term average.
That is by far the lowest figure on ratings going back five years – which had never before dropped below 80 – and well below that in 2009, preceding a 33% slump in wheat production at harvest the following year.
The poor condition rating reflects a dearth of moisture, which has left crops in a poor state heading into winter, raising the prospect of large rates of freeze damage.

Australia: Average barley yields increase significantly since the 1970s
|
Average barley yields have increased significantly since the 1970s, according to University of Adelaide barley program leader Jason Eglington quoted by Stock Journal on October 25.
Speaking at the recent Hart Field Day, Dr Eglington said grain yield doubled in the period from 1970 to 2000 but average production was significantly affected by drought conditions in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
"The five-year average has now recovered back up to the long-term trend for productivity increases," he said.
This meant that the five-year average was now at 2.27 tonnes a hectare.
The area sown to barley in South Australia in the 2013-14 season was estimated at 925,000 ha, slightly above the five-year average which could possibly be attributed to limited early sowing opportunities in some districts.
"The area sown to barley varies year to year but is generally pretty stable at just under 1 million ha," Dr Eglington said.
Barley production for last season was estimated at 2.28 million tonnes, with a statewide average of 2.47 t/ha.
"Last year the top varieties were going about 5 t/ha," he said. "These varieties include Compass, Hindmarsh, Fathom and La Trobe."
