Scientific Digest
For your health, marinate your steak in beer!
ABSTRACT
This might sound as a joke but it is true! Portuguese
researchers have looked into the effect of different beer
types as meat marinates in regard to the formation of
polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). All beer types
tested (Black Beer, Pilsner and a non-alcohol Pilsner)
showed inhibitory effects on PAH formation (which are to
see in context with cancer). The effect increased with the
increase of their radicals-cavenging activity. Stay healthy,
insist on beer marinated meat! Read more

USA, WI: Pabst Brewing Co. completes sale to Blue Ribbon Intermediate Holdings LLC
|
Pabst Brewing Co., the former Milwaukee-based brewer that began 170 years ago, has completed the sale to Blue Ribbon Intermediate Holdings LLC, for an undisclosed amount, Milwaukee Business Journal reported on November 14.
The New York Times reported in September that Los Angeles-based Metropoulos & Co., which bought Pabst in 2010 for $250 million, agreed to sell the company for $700 million to $750 million. Blue Ribbon Intermediate Holdings, a partnership between Eugene Kashper and San Francisco-based investment firm TSG Consumer Partners LLC, will continue to operate the company in Los Angeles.
Kashper, an American beer entrepreneur who started his career with The Stroh Brewery Company, will serve as the chairman and chief executive officer of Pabst. Kashper plans to relocate his family from New York to Los Angeles. He co-founded a number of beer and beverage companies, including Oasis Beverages where he served as the chairman from 2008 to 2014.
"We are thrilled to complete the acquisition of this great company," said Kashper. "I started my career with The Stroh Brewery Company, selling many of Pabst's classic brands, such as Old Milwaukee, Schaefer, Schlitz and Stroh's. In the 20 years since then, I have been selling, marketing and brewing beer - and

Canada, NS: Craft brewery in Annapolis Valley launches residents’ investments program
|
The founders of a craft brewery being planned for Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley have announced the launch of a program that will allow residents of the province to invest in the project and receive a tax credit for doing so, Canadian Beer News reported on November 14.
The Wayfarers’ Ale Community Investment Ltd. has been set up to offer shares in a Community Economic Development Investment Fund (CEDIF) that will support the development of the brewery. Nova Scotians can invest cash or RRSP funds in the project, and will be eligible for a Nova Scotia Equity Tax Credit of between 35% and 65%, depending on the terms and length of the investment.
The funding raised via the CEDIF will be used to build the Wayfairers’ Ale Brewery adjacent to the Port Pub in Port Williams, NS, with a target opening date of late 2015.

USA, WI: Lawsuit against Capital Brewery dismissed
|
A Dane County judge has dismissed a lawsuit brought by minority shareholders of Capital Brewery which claimed misconduct by company executives, wkow.com reported on November 14.
The plaintiffs claimed brewery president Scott Weiner and director Richard King left them out of important decisions involving the company. However, Judge Peter Anderson says the minority shareholders haven't shown they had standing to sue.
Weiner and King hold nearly 55% of Capital stock.
The State Journal reports the minority shareholders were led by former brewmaster, Kirby Nelson.
Nelson is now brewmaster at Wisconsin Brewing Co. in Verona, which opened in November 2013. He opened the brewery with Carl Nolen, a former president of Capital who made an unsuccessful offer to buy the company in 2011.

Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation’s attributable income declines by 7% in H1 2014
|
Beverage maker Delta Corporation’s attributable income for the last six months to September was down seven percent to $44 million as the group seeks to commission two sorghum beer plants to boost the group’s revenue after lager beer sales fell on weakening demand, zimeye.com reported on November 13.
Larger beer volumes for the period were down 25 percent to 69.5 million litres on the back of an underperforming economy, group chief executive, Pearson Gowero, told journalists and analysts on November 12. Half-year lager volumes have come off a post-dollarisation peak of just over 100 million litres registered during the 2013 financial year.
Revenue was down four percent to $302 million for the half year to September 30 on depressed consumer spending.
“Consumer spend is softening and largely chasing lower priced goods and services,” the company said in a statement accompanying its results on November 12.
Operating income decreased by nine percent to $57 million while earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation was down four percent to $ 74.4 million.
Investment activities to maintain and expand operations decreased by 52 percent to $ 13.6 million

World: Heineken plans to market Belgian Affligem abbey beer as a global brand - report
|
The Dutch brewer Heineken has plans to market the Affligem abbey beer as a world brand beside its existing Heineken pilsner, expatica.com reported on November 13.
Across the globe, demand for pilsner is falling as interest in special beers grows.
In addition to Affligem Heineken also hopes to promote Desperados - a beer with a tequila taste - and Radler - a mixture of beer and lemonade - as world brands.
Heineken's marketing chief Alexis Nasard pointed to the rich history of Belgian abbey beers and their enormous credibility.
Affligem is expected to go head-to-head against AB InBev's Leffe. Affligem takes its name from the Benedictine abbey founded in the Flemish municipality of Affligem in 1072.
The monks stopped brewing beer in 1940.
From 1956 onwards the beer was brewed by outside companies including De Smet of Opwijk in which Heineken took a majority stake in 2000. The brewery then changed its name to Affligem Brewery.
Affligem exists in a blond, double and triple version as well as Patersvat and Affligem 950 Cuvée. The beer recipes are still owned by the Abbey of Affligem.

EU: Non-alcoholic beer enjoys growing demand in Europe
|
One in seven British drinkers bought a non-alcoholic beer last year, highlighting improvements in taste and quality of alcohol-free alternatives, according to new figures from global research firm Mintel.
Across Europe, Mintel statistics show that consumers are gaining a thirst for non-alcoholic beer with Spanish drinkers the top consumers, followed by drinkers in Germany, Italy, Poland and France.
However, despite the strong consumer demand for non-alcoholic beer, these launches accounted for just 3% of all global beer launch activity so far in 2014, less than the 4% in 2011 and significantly less than the 10% in 1999.
In the UK, 2014 has seen only 4% of new beer innovations which are non-alcoholic.
Jonny Forsyth, global drinks analyst at Mintel, said: “Non-alcoholic beer has huge long-term sales potential, both in Muslim-dominated regions and health-conscious but beer-loving Western markets. This is an area of innovation which all major brewers should be focusing on – as consumers want reassurance of product quality, something trusted brands can provide.
“The greatest influence on recent sales is their improved taste. Whilst NABs were pushed heavily in the late-1990s and early 2000s, this failed to translate into global sales because the product was widely viewed as inferior. Yet, the modern varieties
