Scientific Digest
The hidden treasures of hop bracts
ABSTRACT
We know we don't know everything about hops, but we're
always discovering new things! Japanese researchers
have used a novel separation technique using a sequential
liquid chromatography (LC) method in the following steps:
(1) highspeed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC); (2)
hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) using an
amide column; and reversed-phase (RP) LC using a (3)
octadecylsily (ODS) or (4) phenyl column. The
comprehensive separation and structural analyses identified
four compounds for the first time in plants, and 20
compounds that have not been reported from hops were
also identified. Most of the compounds were hydrophilic
glycosylated and/or esterified analogues of abscisic acids,
hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonols, lignans, hydroxybenzoic
acids, or carotenoids. In addition, large amounts of highly
oligomeric proanthocyanidins were found in the hop bract
extract. Who knows, maybe these compounds will become
physiologically important in the future!

Belgium: AB InBev faces tax authority investigation
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV said Belgian tax inspectors are seeking to investigate a unit of the world’s biggest brewer, Bloomberg reported on November 13.
“The Belgian Special Tax Inspection Authorities wishes to look into what would be the most appropriate fiscal treatment for one of our subsidiaries, Ampar BVBA,” Karen Couck, a spokeswoman for the Budweiser maker, said by e-mail. She said the company can’t comment further as discussions started recently.
AB InBev complies with all fiscal rules and regulations in Belgium and other countries where it does business, Couck said.
Multinational tax avoidance has become a top political issue across Europe. On November 12, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker responded to disclosures by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists about favorable tax deals that Luxembourg entered into with hundreds of big companies. Juncker had previously served as Luxembourg’s prime minister for almost 19 years.
The European Commission is probing the terms of tax deals granted by Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Ireland to multinationals including Apple Inc., Starbucks Corp. and Fiat Finance and Trade Ltd. The commission said in September that Ireland and Luxembourg had provided illegal state aid to Apple and Fiat through deals that didn’t comply with international tax rules. The same month,

Vietnam: Beer manufacturers oppose government plans to introduce beer stamping requirements
|
Vietnam’s beer manufacturers believe the requirement that they need to stamp their products will increase their production costs and weaken competitiveness, Vietnamnet.Brigde reported on November 17.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) plans to ask beer manufacturers to stamp their products to help state management agencies prevent tax evasion and trade fraud. However, enterprises have opposed the plan.
Tran Dinh Thanh, deputy general director of Habeco, said breweries will have to buy more machines for the stamping, which will be a technical problem for enterprises because of the limited number of stamping machine suppliers.
“There are very few companies in the world making stamping machines, because the stamping policy is now being applied in only three to four countries in the world,” Thanh said.
Nguyen Thanh Ha from S&B Law Firm noted that the current laws require manufacturers to give detailed information on products’ labels, and there is no need to request manufacturers to stamp their products as well.
According to Ha, the stamping is now required for helmets and tobacco products as well, but it is still unclear about the efficiency of the policy.
Therefore, Ha said MOIT would “make an unnecessary requirement” when forcing manufacturers to stamp their beer products.
Even the Ministry of

South Africa: SABMiller starts own craft beer in South Africa
|
SABMiller — the world’s No. 2 brewer by earnings — has started its own craft beer in South Africa. The beer — No. 3 Fransen Street — is named after a brewery SABMiller opened in 1998 to experiment with beer in small batches, according to a report in Euronews.
The strategy is similar to the one SABMiller uses in the U.S., where it sells the Blue Moon craft beer, the report said.
In doing so, SABMiller is competing with Ndumiso Madlala and hundreds of other microbrewers in South Africa’s burgeoning craft beer scene.
Madlala’s brewery, Soweto Gold, is a first for the sprawling township and produces as much beer a month as SABMiller makes every six minutes. But that may be enough to cause a stir in SABMiller’s long domination of the South African beer market, Euronews reports.
South African craft brewers are gaining momentum.
While craft brews are mostly aimed at wealthier South Africans, Madlala says Soweto Gold’s appeal lies in its township roots.
Mauricio Leyva, a managing director at SAB, said there’s space for everyone to play in the growing beer category. “The more people that move into beer, the better for all,” he told Euronews. “We like to see it as a

USA: AB InBev preparing a line extension for Bud Light
|
Anheuser Busch InBev is prepping a line extension for Bud Light called Mixx Tail that appears to continue the brewer's recent innovation strategy of blurring the lines between cocktails and beer, Ad Age reported on November 14.
AB InBev filed a recent trademark application for the product which lists it as a flavored beer. The company on November 14 confirmed the launch to Ad Age but did not provide other details, only saying that it would debut this spring.
One of the brewer's distributors recently tweeted about the launch, saying the product would come in flavors such as Hurricane, Firewalker and Long Island Ice Tea.
AB InBev, the world's largest brewer, already sells a version of the product in Argentina where the product is sold under the Quilmes brand name.
The brewer did not share marketing details on the U.S. launch. But typically AB InBev puts significant money behind products that carry the Bud Light name. For instance, the launch of higher-alcohol line extension Bud Light Platinum in early 2012 was accompanied with a Super Bowl ad. And the brewer continues to invest behind its Bud Light Ritas franchise, which is a line of fruity, margarita-inspired flavored malt beverages.
Brewers have been tinkering with

Greece & Australia: Greek Nissos beer making debut in Australia
|
Nissos, a 'boutique' beer produced in the heart of the Aegean Sea on the island of Tinos, is making its debut in Australia. Considering its award-winning journey within only 15 months of the production of its first bottle, this Greek craft beer coming to Australia is set to deliver a new refreshing experience for all those who appreciate a good beer, Neos Kosmos reported on November 17.
At a time when businesses in Greece were shutting down the one after the other, four aspirational people - Alexandros Kouris, the well-known in Greece travel journalist Maya Tsokli, and Elina and Kostis Dalas - decided to set the foundation stone of their microbrewery Nissos.
"It has been created from scratch as a greenfield project, privately financed. Nevertheless, in a very short space of time, Nissos beer achieved a high level of brand awareness and recognition among consumers and professionals alike as a great tasting premium craft beer from the Cyclades," said Alexandros Kouris.
"In Greece and within only a few months of commercial operation, our brand has managed to establish a strong presence in leading restaurants throughout the Cyclades, as well as at trendy venues in Athens, Thessaloniki and elsewhere in Greece. Nissos has also

India: SABMiller India appoints new MD
|
SABMiller India Pvt. Ltd, India’s second-largest brewer, has appointed Shalabh Seth as managing director (MD), replacing Grant Liversage, who is returning to South Africa after less than 18 months in charge of the company, Livemint reported on November 16.
Seth, who has held various roles at SABMiller India, including that of sales director, since joining the company in 2003, will take over from Liversage starting January, the company said in a statement.
Liversage replaced Paolo Lanzarotti as SABMiller India managing director in August 2013. With Seth’s appointment, SABMiller India will have had four different managing directors in the past eight years or so.
SABMiller India, owner of Foster’s and Haywards beer, has lost market share to rivals United Breweries Ltd and newer entrant Carlsberg over the past few years with analysts blaming management issues.
SABMiller Plc, the parent company of SABMiller India, entered the country in 2000 by acquiring Narang Breweries. It built its business in India through more acquisitions, including that of Shaw Wallace and Foster’s India, and emerged as the biggest rival to market leader United Breweries, owner of Kingfisher beer. However, newer entrants Carlsberg and Anheuser-Busch InBev have been quicker in launching brands and spotting consumer preferences

Canada: Government invests C$1.95 mln in the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre
|
Shelly Glover, Member of Parliament for Saint Boniface and Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, announced on November 14 an investment of C$1,950,000 to the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) to support its market development efforts in existing and new growth markets.
With this investment, CMBTC aims to maintain and boost Canada's global competitiveness by being the focal point for technical support and market knowledge to companies involved in selling Canadian malting barley or malt to export markets. CMBTC will achieve this by providing technical training and problem-solving to stakeholders, ensuring new varieties meet international customers' needs, and providing direct sales support to international customers.
Founded in 2000, the CMBTC facilities include state-of-the art- brewing and malting equipment that allows it to duplicate any malting or brewing system in the world producing commercial quality malt and beer.
Canada's brewing industry drives C$14 billion in value-added activity and over 160,000 jobs.
Canada supplies approximately 20% of the global malting barley market and is the world's third largest exporter of malt.
This investment is being made through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's AgriMarketing Program, a five-year, up to C$341-million program under Growing Forward 2.
