A holistic story about hops
ABSTRACT
We know a lot has been written about hops. This review
shows there is still a huge amount of information covering
hop chemistry and nomenclature we are not aware of.
Furthermore, the different hop resins found in the lupulin
glands of the hop cones are discussed in detail. The major
hop bitter acids (alpha- and beta-acids) and the latest findings on
the absolute configuration of the cis and trans iso-alpha-acids
are discussed. Special attention is given to the hard resins;
the known delta-resin is reviewed and the epsilon-resin is
introduced. Recent data on the bittering potential and the
antimicrobial properties of both hard resin fractions are
disclosed. Also hop aroma components and hop derived
polyphenols and their potential health benefits are
addressed.

Budweiser, the self-proclaimed King of Beers, is more of an afterthought among young consumers at bars across the U.S.: some 44% of 21- to 27-year-old drinkers today have never tried Budweiser, according to the brand’s parent company, Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, The Wall Street Journal reported on November 23.
Young drinkers aren’t the reason Budweiser volumes have declined in the U.S. for 25 years, from its nearly 50-million-barrel peak in 1988 to 16 million barrels last year. Light beers like its sister, Bud Light, have chipped away at Bud’s share of the market for decades. Bud Light overtook it as the No. 1 selling beer in 2001, and Coors Light displaced it as No. 2 in 2011.
Craft beers and flavored malts such as AB InBev’s Lime-a-Rita have contributed to a 9% decline in shipments since then.
The company has decided that persuading 21- to 27-year-olds to grab a Bud is the best chance to stop the free-fall. After years of developing advertising and marketing that appeals to all ages, AB InBev plans to concentrate future Budweiser promotions exclusively on that age bracket. USA, VA: Commercial hops farm planned in northern Virginia
|
A Loudoun County pasture is set to become the Mid-Atlantic's first commercial-scale production and processing facility for hops, dailyjournal.net reported on November, 21.
Black Hops Farm LLC will invest about $1 mln to initially convert 15 acres in Leesburg into a hop farm and build a processing facility, which will allow other Virginia hop growers to efficiently process their crops for market, Gov. Terry McAuliffe said. The move will create 11 jobs, and the company plans to source more than 60 percent of their hops, or at least 3,500 pounds, from Virginia over the next three years.
Black Hops Farm fills a critical need for current and future craft brewers and builds on efforts to increase Virginia's position in the fast-growing craft beer industry, said McAuliffe, who approved a $40,000 grant from the Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development Fund for the project.
Over the past few years, more than a dozen states including Virginia have added hops to their list of crops, mirroring the growing demand and interest in craft beer, as well as the use of local ingredients.
Hops have been growing in Virginia since the 1700s but are most notably grown in the Pacific Northwest.

USA, OH: Blank Slate Brewing Co. expands and opens taproom
|
Blank Slate Brewing Co. in the East End is opening a taproom that will be the only place where Cincinnatians can drink all of its beers in the same place, bizjournals.com reported on November, 24.
The taproom is in a soft open mode, which started serving on Nov. 20, owner Scott LaFollette said.
"When we started, we were about 90 percent done with opening a small production brewery when the laws changed to allow taprooms," he said. "We really didn't have the space or the money to do that at the time. It wasn't until earlier this year that we were able to procure the space and build out."
The taproom has seating for about 45 people in 750 square feet. It houses eight taps that will hold all of the beers the brewery is currently producing.
The taproom will enter full service sometime in December, but don't expect a grand opening.
"It probably won't be all that grand. We're really not much for fanfare. We're more, 'Hey, we're open now. Come see us,'" LaFollette said.

USA, NJ & PA: Cape May Brewing to expand distribution to Philadelphia

On the first of December, the Philadelphia craft beer scene will get a little craftier as the beers of South Jersey’s Cape May Brewing Co. are poised to make their debut, brewbound.com reported on November, 25.
The brewery, which just celebrated its three-year anniversary this summer, recently paired with Philadelphia distributor Origlio Beverage and is excited to join the city’s vibrant beer scene. “Philadelphia is a natural next step for us. People have been enjoying our beers down the shore for a while and many of them are asking if they can get our beers in Philly. We’re thrilled to fulfill a demand for our customers,” said Ryan Krill, co-owner.
The brewery and its popular taproom, located on the grounds of the Cape May County Airport, opened in the summer of 2011. Cape May Brewing offers a large selection of beers on tap from Sours and Belgians to a wide range of IPAs, as well as all-natural sodas and craft beer vinegar. Some of the beers to be released in Philadelphia are the brewery’s flagship Cape May IPA, King Porter Stomp, Devil’s Reach, a strong Belgian-style ale and Mop Water, their 5-Spiced Ale named for the beer’s unusual hue.

USA, TX: Zero One Brewery to open by January 2015

Erik Zobel launched Zero One Ale House, a beer-themed pub, in March 2013. Now, equipment is assembled for the Zero One Brewery, sanangelo.live.com reported on November, 25
The brewery was always a part of Zobel’s vision for Zero One, he said, but financial constraints on the opening limited the establishment to an eatery with a vast craft beer assortment. Now, with nearly three successful years behind him, he’s ready to expand.
“The cool thing about this approach is that I was able to test the waters before the huge capital investment of brewing equipment and all that, you know? [I got] to see how craft beers around here would be received…[Before we opened] you couldn’t go to a restaurant or bar and find anything besides what the macro-brewers were trying to push,” he said.
Since opening, Zobel has kept some 80 plus beers in-house, 23 of which are on tap. Seasonal beers, such as pumpkin ales and “winter warmers”, are brought in on rotation; a continually changing card that features a few different types of brew for San Angelo's beer enthusiasts.

USA, IL: Blackberry Farm plans to open a brewery in Maryville
|
Blackberry Farm is beefing up its brewing activity — and extending its reach beyond the farm, knoxnews.com reported on November, 26.
The Walland resort has been brewing beer on-site since 2011, but it is currently putting the finishing touches on an off-site brewing operation in downtown Maryville, its first production facility outside the farm grounds.
Roy Milner, the managing partner of Blackberry Farm Brewery, said the resort will maintain an on-site brewing operation — partly because guests enjoy watching the process up close — but that as Blackberry gears up to produce larger amounts, it made sense to add a production facility in Maryville.
"The idea is that all of our recipes still get developed in our pilot system in the farm, and we'll do all of that R&D on the system that we've been using for the past three years," he said. "Whatever recipes make the cut … will come to Maryville and be produced on a larger scale."
Milner said the goal is to distribute Blackberry beers to retailers and restaurants in multiple markets, and that the resort has been interviewing distributors with that in mind.

Vietnam: State may tighten control over brewing industry
|
It is highly possible that Vietnam’s breweries would be listed as a conditional business field, which means that it will pay high taxes and will be put under strict control of state management agencies, VietNamNet Bridge reported on November 24.
While social organizations concerned about the public health have called for tighter control over beer production, economists have warned that breweries and consumers will suffer.
A report on the role of the brewery industry in economic development, made by the Institute for Industry Policy and Strategy (IPSI), Regioplan (RP) and a policy research firm and Ernst & Young (EY), has shown a decline in the brewery industry, starting from 2014.
Consumption reportedly decreased by 7.5 percent in comparison with the same period last year, while output decreased by 8.2 percent.
RP and EY attributed the sharp decrease to the luxury tax increase imposed in January 2013, which has pushed selling prices up and lowered beer consumption.
RP, which analysed the figures released by breweries, has found decreases in the total added value (by 1 percent) and other indicators that reflect the beer output and consumption.

EU & Russia & Ukraine: Winter crops planting conditions predominantly favourable in the EU but worse in Russia and Ukraine

Planting conditions for winter crops across the EU have been ‘predominantly favourable’, according to the latest EU Crop Monitoring (MARS) report.
During October and the first part of November, western and central Europe generally experienced warmer than average conditions.
Although, heavy rainfall in some areas, such as France, did cause delays in planting winter wheat crops, no serious problems were reported and early establishment progressed well.
Winter barley crops generally emerged around two weeks earlier than 2013 as a result of the warm conditions. Good establishment was also reported for winter rapeseed crops, although reports of insect damage in Germany and the UK are highlighted.
However, in Russia and Ukraine conditions were less favourable. Below average rainfall has led to concerns over crop establishment, with delays in many areas.
Although, Russian wheat was planted quickly, winter wheat is said to be generally poorly established.
The report cautions that crop conditions may improve if late November weather is warm and wet but the risk of winter frost kill is high.

Australia: Australia’s craft brewers turn to WTO in an effort to stop losing domestic market to US counterparts

Craft brewers in Australia have turned to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in an effort to stop other governments subsidising their foreign counterparts, International Business Times reported on November 25.
ABC reports that the Australian Real Craft Brewers Association (ARCBA) accuses US microbrewers in particular of gaining an unfair advantage in the Australian market.
Many governments offer tax breaks to producers that brew under a pre-determined amount of beer each year. In the UK, it's called the Small Brewers' Relief scheme and was introduced by former Chancellor Gordon Brown in 2002. Under the initiative, those brewing less than 60,000 hectolitres qualify for reduced beer duty.
The smaller you are, the better the saving: those producing less than 5,000 hectolitres qualify for a 50% tax break, but the rebate falls as the amount brewed goes up.
These sorts of tax breaks, argue the ARCBA, distort the market. The organisation's chairman David Hollyoak said: "Australia is in a very unfair position because in 22 out of the 33 Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development [OECD] countries are providing substantial reduced tax rates for their small brewers, and under the general agreement of trade and tariffs that is deemed a government subsidy."

Peru: SABMiller fights against illicit alcohol
|
SABMiller is encouraging Peruvian fuel producers to buy locally produced ethanol as part of the group’s efforts to curb illicit alcohol — which accounts for almost a third of the total alcoholic beverages market in Peru, Business Day Live reported on November 24.
Illicit alcohol’s share of the market has fallen from 41% to 31% over the past 13 years, as more people can afford legal alternatives and as beverage companies extend their reach into new areas across the country.
But SABMiller’s Peruvian business Backus and other producers are trying to accelerate the process and reverse an entrenched culture, which is aggravated by the fact that illegal alcoholic beverages are up to 10 times cheaper than entry-level beers.
Illicit alcohol, a problem in various Latin American and African nations, is mostly made in Peru from ethanol derived from sugar cane, according to Felipe Cantuarias, Backus’s vice-president of corporate affairs.
Backus’s fight against illegal alcoholic beverages includes a recently launched entry-level beer brand, and campaigns with government and other producers to flag health risks associated with illicit alcohols.

UK: Distilling may return to Edinburgh
|
As reported by Edinburgh News, proposals have been submitted to build a new brewery in the South Queensferry area of the city, turning part of the site into a whisky distillery.
While there are distilleries in Edinburgh which produce other spirits, such as the Spencerfield Spirits Company which recently revealed its first batch of gin, the last malt whisky distillery closed in the city in 1925.
Plans to build Forth Bridge Brewery under the Queensferry Crossing have been proposed by Dave Robertson, a former member of the UK sailing team who is hoping to secure £3 million in funding for the project.
Robertson has already secured half a million pounds in investment and hopes to speed up the maturation process of his Scotch whisky using “top secret” production methods.
“I wanted to be able to combine various aspects into one job – marketing, brewing, hospitality. I wanted to create something unique, an icon for Scottish business,” Robertson told Edinburgh News.
“At the end of the day, this business is going to be unique from the word go. We have had a couple of setbacks, but they are all behind us now. As one of my business advisers said to me, go big or go home.
