Distill the hop oils into your beer
ABSTRACT
It is clear, brewing research is looking for ways to optimize
the extraction of hop oils or bitter components from hops
without losing any of them ! With this in mind, these
German researchers have developed a small scale set-up
where the aroma compounds in a hop and water slurry is
distilled into the beer tank using relatively low
temperatures and CO2. Using the language of process
engineers, this is a desorption/absorption method. Though
the enrichment of hop oils in the beers has historically been
rather low (5μg/l), this methods allows more robust dry
hopping without introducing solid material into the beer.
Furthermore the hops can used afterwards for bittering
purposes. It is certainly worth continuing investigations!

USA: The Brewers Association sums up craft beer industry’s preliminary annual results
|
As the year draws to a close, the Brewers Association—the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American brewers—looked back on how craft brewers fared in 2014.
“It’s remarkable to see how beer has evolved in the past century. Year over year we’re seeing tremendous growth in the craft beer sector and 2014 proved that craft beer is moving into the mainstream,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “Consumers are making a conscious choice to buy and try the plethora of options produced by small and independent craft brewers.”
Of note in 2014:
•U.S. brewery count returns to historic levels. In November, the United States passed the mark of 3,200 brewers in the country and the number of brewery licenses reached the highest ever, topping 4,500 in the first sixth months of the year. Thirteen states (CA, CO, WA, OR, MI, NY, PA, TX, FL, WI, IL, NC, OH) now have more than 100 breweries each.
•Breweries are opening at a rate of 1.5 per day. In addition, there are more than 2,000 breweries in planning.

US: Cash barley prices show little movement in the last few weeks
|
US spot cash prices for both malting and feed barley classes have shown little movement in the last few weeks. This has surprised some in the industry who thought there would be a strengthening for malting barley due to the high percentage of crop that experienced high DON levels and sprout damage, Farm & Ranch Guide reported on December 9.
This hasn't been the case, according to Randy Brag of Valley Grain Milling in Casselton, N.D., because of the concerted effort by the maltsters to try to use as much damaged barley as possible in the malting process.
"According to some of the maltsters, some of this sprouted barley is working quite well," Brag said. "If there is a problem germinating, they are working with it. However, since they are working with sprouted barley you want to get all of that processed by March. If you don't have it processed by March, it's going to die on you.
"(The maltsters) are bending over backward to take some of this stuff, but this is one of those years when they have to," he added.
Brag estimates only 40 percent of this year's barley crop nationwide made top malting specs, while 60 percent fell short. In

USA, HI: Kona Brewing beers to be available at national level
|
The “Liquid Aloha” experience is going national as Kona Brewing Company expands into the final nine states that currently don’t have distribution, making Kona one of the few craft beer brands available in all 50 states during the prime summer season of 2015, the company announced on December, 5.
Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma and West Virginia will be the newest states slated to carry the Hawaiian brand’s lineup, with distribution beginning as early as mid-January 2015.
Kona Brewing has experienced double-digit growth for more than five consecutive years, both in its home market of Hawaii and across the U.S. Mainland. Not only has the craft brewer’s growth trajectory been robust, it has also outpaced the overall craft beer category in terms of year-on-year growth since launching on the mainland.

USA, VA: City Council approves $23 mln in public funding for Stone Brewing Co.
|
The Richmond City Council gave its last major approval for the first phase of the Stone Brewing Co. project, but the second phase might not go as smoothly, timesdispatch.com reported on December, 8.
Before the vote to approve $23 mln in public funding that will be used to build Stone a 200,000-square-foot brewing facility in the Greater Fulton area, several restaurateurs questioned what they saw as a lack of transparency in the deal and a fairness issue arising from the future plans to build Stone a riverfront bistro and beer garden, again with the assistance of public financing.
The vote to authorize the $23 mln transfer to the Richmond Economic Development Authority, which will build the facility and lease it to Stone, was 7-0-2. Councilman Parker C. Agelasto, 5th District, and Councilwoman Reva M. Trammell, 8th District, abstained after trying unsuccessfully to have the council go into a closed session in order to ask sensitive questions about how the first phase is legally connected to the second.

USA, MI: Railtown Brewing Co. opens in Dutton
|
After several years of brewing beer at home, Justin Buiter and Gim Lee decided to turn their passion into a business. The partners have located the latest addition to the West Michigan beer industry in Gaines Township, where Railtown Brewing Co. will open to the public for the first time on Friday, Dec. 12, mlive.com reported on December, 7.
“We felt the population has been growing quite a bit out here in recent years,” said Buiter. “It’s an untapped market.”
Because the two partners both still have day jobs, the brewery will be opening only two days a week to begin with, from 3 p.m. to midnight on Friday and noon to midnight on Saturday.
“We also don’t want to run out of beer,” said Buiter. “It’s been a year and 3 months since we started. We want to make sure when we open we have consistent hours.”
For the grand opening, Railtown is pouring five taps of beer out of its 3-barrel nano-brewing system. Buiter said the opening lineup includes a blond ale, a brown, an IPA, a milk stout and a weizenbock.

USA, RI & NH: Foolproof Brewing Company expands distribution to New Hampshire
|
Foolproof Brewing Company announced that its beers are now available for sale in the state of New Hampshire, brewbound.com reported on December, 5.
The company’s beers are being distributed statewide by the New Hampshire Craft Alliance, a collaborative network of four distributors – New Hampshire Distributors, Bellavance Beverage, Clarke Distributors, and White Mountain Distributors.
“We are thrilled to begin distributing our beers to another one of the great states of New England,” said Nick Garrison, Foolproof’s president and founder. “Partnering with the New Hampshire Craft Alliance’s experienced and reputable team, we look forward to introducing the Foolproof brand to beer lovers across the Granite State.”
Foolproof’s four year-round beers are available in draft and 12 oz. can format across New Hampshire. This year-round offerings include Barstool American golden ale; Raincloud robust porter; Backyahd IPA; and La Ferme Urbaine (LFU) farmhouse ale. The brewery also produces a line of rotating specialty beers, including Revery Russian imperial stout and King of the Yahd imperial IPA.

USA, OR & CO: Ninkasi Brewing Company expands distribution throughout Colorado

Ninkasi Brewing Company has partnered with C.R. Goodman Companies to bring its robust lineup of craft beer offerings statewide to Colorado starting Dec. 8, 2014, the company announced on December, 3.
Started in 2006 by Nikos Ridge and Jamie Floyd, Ninkasi first made its mark in the industry with its highly-hopped, Northwest ales. Since then, Ninkasi’s portfolio of beers has expanded to include a diverse offering including year-round craft lagers. Coloradoans can look forward to Ninkasi on-tap and on the shelves across the state, beginning early this month.
“Colorado is home to a number of great brewers and has a super fun, educated, passionate and enthusiastic craft community,” Nikos Ridge, co-founder and CEO of Ninkasi, says. “We are stoked after many years of attending GABF and other beer events there, to be able to distribute our beers year-round!”

UK: Molson Coors closing brewery in Hampshire with more than 100 jobs at risk
|
Jobs losses have been announced at a 50-year-old Manor Park brewery in Alton, Hampshire which is to close next year, BBC reported on December 8.
Molson Coors Brewing Company said it had not been able to replace the work lost when Heineken moved its production back in-house.
A spokesman for the firm said it was working with employees at its site in Alton to "mitigate job losses".
East Hampshire District Council said more than 100 jobs were at risk and added it would support those affected.
The Molson Coors spokesman said the firm was trying to "identify alternative proposals for the site" and added its priority was to support impacted employees.
District councillor Julie Butler said the authority would hold "an immediate high level meeting" with Molson Coors, Hampshire County Council and others to respond to the closure and plan for the regeneration of the brewery site.
The brewery is expected to close at the end of May.
According to a company spokesperson, for the past seven years production on behalf of Heineken has equated to 75% of Manor Park’s production. The balance has been comprised of Molson Coors’ brands – namely Carling, Grolsch and Coors Light.

Ireland: Big increase reported in winter barley sowings this year
|
There has been a big increase in winter barley sowings in Ireland. Figures from some members in the seed trade would suggest that winter barley seed sales are up by 25-30pc. This would equate to 70,000 ha, excluding crops sown from home-saved seed, independent.ie reported on December 10.
Wheat sowings appear to be back 10-15pc in the south of the country. Sowings in the northern part of the country appear to be similar to 2013, while the oats crop also appears to be on a par with last year.
This is the first time that winter barley acreage will be greater than winter wheat and is, analysts believe, a reflection of the relative costs and returns of the two crops.
Growers have at last switched on to the fact that winter wheat is a very expensive crop to grow and with the good yields of winter barley over the last two seasons, the return from the winter barley crop can easily beat the returns from winter wheat.
The acreage of winter oilseed rape appears to be down by 25-30pc and again is reflective of the high costs of growing this crop.

The Netherlands: Heineken to make ‘drastic changes’ to its Dutch arm salaries
|
Brewing group Heineken wants to make ‘drastic changes’ to the pay and conditions agreements at its Dutch arm to ensure the company remains globally competitive, the Financieele Dagblad said on December 10.
HR director Hans de Ruiter says in an interview that new employees earn between 20% and 30% more than they would in similar functions at other companies. He also wants to remove part of the Dutch organisation from the collective pay bargaining because it is hurting the company’s competitive edge, the FD says.
De Ruiter, who is also a member of the board at employers’ organisation VNO-NCW, has raised the lopsided pay situation internally, the FD says. However, unions and the works council oppose change because they fear it will lead to a two-tier workforce.
“We are healthy now but if we want to be in that position in a couple of years, we will have to dare to look at salaries,” the FD quotes De Ruiter as saying. “We are not asking our staff to take a 20% pay cut… but at least establish the way for the future.”

South Korea: Chinese beer Qingdao outsells Budweiser in H2 2014
|
The Chinese beer Qingdao outsold longtime bestseller Budweiser to become the best-selling imported beer in the second half of the year in South Korea, according to Lotte Mart, the nation’s largest retailer.
Qingdao accounted for 43.8 percent of sales of imported beer at the firm’s outlets between July 1 and Dec. 4, while Budweiser stood at 28.6 percent, Lotte Mart said on December 8. Another American beer, Miller, came in third with 21.5 percent, according to Lotte.
The Chinese brewer’s greater market share came as a result of a growing number of Chinese tourists in South Korea, officials said.
This was the first time Qingdao has had the best-selling position at a domestic retailer.
It was the third best-selling imported beer, with a 22.9 percent market share, during the first half of last year, with Budweiser at 49.3 percent and Miller second with 27.8 percent.
Yet Qingdao’s sales skyrocketed during the first half of this year, outselling Miller and getting within one percentage point of Budweiser in market share.
