Distill the hop oils into your beer
ABSTRACT
It is clear, brewing research is looking for ways to optimize
the extraction of hop oils or bitter components from hops
without losing any of them ! With this in mind, these
German researchers have developed a small scale set-up
where the aroma compounds in a hop and water slurry is
distilled into the beer tank using relatively low
temperatures and CO2. Using the language of process
engineers, this is a desorption/absorption method. Though
the enrichment of hop oils in the beers has historically been
rather low (5μg/l), this methods allows more robust dry
hopping without introducing solid material into the beer.
Furthermore the hops can used afterwards for bittering
purposes. It is certainly worth continuing investigations!

Germany & USA: Interest in American craft beer may change some day the German brewing industry
|
U.S. craft beer’s success at home is great and all, but reaching Hasselhoff levels of popularity in Germany is a far more impressive milestone, MarketWatch said on December 12.
Let’s start off by saying that craft beer isn’t exactly a new concept outside the U.S. The Australian craft-beer industry has grown about 13% each year since 2013. In Ireland, the burgeoning industry has tripled in size since 2011 and makes more than 50% of Ireland-produced beer exports while taking on multinational companies including Heineken and Diageo, which have bought up traditional Irish brands Guinness, Murphy’s and Beamish. The Esquire Network’s “Brew Dogs” looks at U.S. craft beer through the eyes of brewers from Scottish craft brewery BrewDog. Some of the best craft beer in the world, at least according to BeerAdvocate at RateBeer, is being brewed by Mikkel Borg Bjergsø’s Copenhagen-based Mikkeller.
However, exporting U.S. craft beer to any of those countries has been a tall order until recently. Of the more than 5.3 million barrels of beer exported from the United States in 2013, according to the Treasury Department’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, only 282,526 were craft beer. Canada: Brick Brewing releases financial results for the third quarter of 2015 fiscal year

Brick Brewing Co. Limited, the largest Canadian-owned and Canadian-based publicly held brewery in Ontario, released its financial results for the third quarter of its 2015 fiscal year, newswire.ca reported on December, 11.
Net revenues were C $9.3 mln for the third quarter while EBITDA for the third quarter was C $1.4 mln. Year-to-date, EBITDA was C $3.6 mln, vs C $3.2 mln for the prior year.
Waterloo craft brands performed well, posting volume growth exceeding 50%. Waterloo growth was broad based, with the introduction of Waterloo Grapefruit Radler being supported by growth in the core product offerings - Dark, IPA, Pilsner and Amber- as well as the Summer seasonal mix pack. Seagram vodka cooler volume was negatively impacted by discontinued product listings in the LCBO, however both Seagram cider and Seagram malt-based coolers generated strong growth in the quarter. Laker volume declined in the quarter, driven by a Laker 12 pack launch promotion in the prior year that did not repeat and an overall decline in industry volume. Additionally, the quarter benefited from strong year-over-year improvement in co-pack production. Gross margin in the quarter was impacted primarily by shifts in product mix and higher costs of brewing materials.

USA: AB InBev moving some top executives and other jobs to new office in New York
|
Anheuser-Busch is opening a U.S. commercial strategy office in New York that will serve as a hub for its sales and marketing operations, with some top executives and an undetermined number of jobs moving from St. Louis, LakeExpo.com reported on December 10.
The news is the latest sign of St. Louis’ loosening hold on the high-powered jobs and creative work long done at the brewer.
Sales and marketing operations for the U.S. and Canada are currently based at the St. Louis headquarters of A-B, the U.S. unit of Anheuser-Busch InBev.
Some area jobs are expected to be transferred to New York, but A-B is still determining how many. The commercial strategy office will ultimately have a staff of as many as 250 employees; field sales and wholesaler support operations currently in St. Louis are not affected.
The New York commercial strategy office will be headed by David Almeida, A-B’s U.S. vice president of sales, and Jorn Socquet, the brewer’s vice president of U.S. marketing.

USA, NC: New Belgium Brewing to install brewhouse vessels in January
|
New Belgium Brewing’s Brewhouse vessels will start rolling into their new home on Craven Street in Asheville, NC, the second week in January, brewbound.com reported on December, 9.
New Belgium’s 200 hectoliter Brewhouse system departed from GEA Brewery Systems (GEA) in Kitzingen, Germany in mid-November to arrive to the NC State Ports Authority in Wilmington, NC by mid-December. Once the vessels arrive on the site, they will be set into their new home over a period of weeks.
“The on time arrival and delivery of our vessels is testament to having strong, competent brewing, construction and community partners,” said Jay Richardson, New Belgium Asheville General Manager. “We are incredibly grateful to be surrounded by a team that is making extraordinary efforts throughout this process. We will be thoughtful and intentional about the delivery of our vessels and appreciate the patience of those along the route.”
“This is a real milestone in the process of building our east coast home and an exciting way to kick off 2015,” said Alex Dwoinen, Brewing Manager. “We’re grateful to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the NC State Ports Authority, and the districts along the route for their help in the vessel transportation.”

USA, VT: Paine Mountain Brewing opens in Northfield
|
Back in May, Knotty Shamrock owner Kevin Pecor began construction on a new brewery that would provide suds for his Northfield Irish pub and other area restaurants, sevendaysvt.com reported on December, 10.
By late summer, the brewing equipment was installed and ready to go. And by September, Pecor and his brewers-in-arms — who include Radley Herold and Vermont Pub & Brewery brewmaster Russ FitzPatrick — were running test batches through the system.
This coming Saturday, December 13, Pecor will host the grand opening of the Paine Mountain Brewing tasting room. Currently, the brewery is separate from the adjoining pub, but Pecor says he plans to open a door between the two soon.
The weekend event will offer Paine Mountain's four "staple" beers on tap. These include a Bavarian-style wheat beer called the Knotty Blonde, a black double IPA, the lighter Common Man IPA, and RiRa, aka Russ' Irish Red Ale.
The last beer was named for FitzPatrick, whose assistance Pecor says he's welcomed; he credits the VPB brewer with helping to formulate the other flagship beers. "Russ actually lives in Northfield," Pecor says, "so it's been great to have him around." As for the abbreviation RiRa, he says, it's an old Irish term

Canada, ON: Brick Brewing gets provincial grant for expansion project
|
Brick Brewing is getting C $357,959 from the Ontario government to help pay for the expansion of its Kitchener plant, therecord.com reported on December, 10.
The funding was announced in a news release from the Ministry of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure.
Brick is undertaking a C $9 mln project to add a brew house at its bottling, packaging and distribution facility on Bingemans Centre Drive.
The project follows the Kitchener beer maker's decision to close its brew house in Waterloo. In September, it announced the C $4 mln sale of its Waterloo property.
Brick, which expects to complete the expansion next fall, says that consolidating operations in Kitchener should result in cost savings of more than C $1 mln a year.
The provincial grant comes from the Southwestern Ontario Development Fund, which was set up to support projects that create jobs, encourage innovation and attract private sector investment.

Saint Archer Brewing Company announced on December, 9 a new partnership with Alaska Airlines.
Saint Archer’s White Ale is now available, at no extra charge, to customers 21 years and over on select regional flights throughout the Western United States. These include flights from San Diego to Mammoth Lakes, Boise, Fresno/Yosemite, Santa Rosa, Monterey and Salt Lake City.
“At the core of Saint Archer is a thirst for exploration,” said Josh Landan, President and Founder of Saint Archer. “Our ambassadors and brewers are always looking for that next adventure or a new beer that’s just beyond the horizon. UK: Scotland’s brewers call on Government to end controversial beer ties for pubs
|
Some of Scotland's most prominent brewers have called on the Scottish Government to adopt new English legislation that will end the controversial beer tie for tenanted pubs, The Herald reported on December 12.
In a letter sent to ministers in Edinburgh, owners and executives from regional brewers Williams Brothers, Stewart Brewing, Cairngorm, Inveralmond, Deeside, Harviestoun and Fyne Ales argue alongside Glasgow's WEST and Tennent Caledonian Breweries (TCB) that the independent pub market in Scotland will be transformed if tenants are free to buy products on the open market.
Paul Waterson, chief executive of the Scottish Licensed Trade Association (SLTA), is also a signatory.
The letter comes after MPs voted to end the beer tie - a convention where the tenants of major pub companies are tied to buying beer from their landlords - under an amendment to the Small Business, Enterprise and Employment Bill in November. The amendment will also allow tenants to seek open market rent reviews.
Describing the proposed legislation, expected to be passed by the House of Lords next year, as "crucial" to the future of British pubs", the letter implores minister to introduce the new rules at Holryood.

Tanzania: Tanzania Breweries loses cases lodged to challenge payments to former employees

Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) has lost two cases it had lodged before the Court of Appeal to challenge payments of over 1.46 bln to its former employees being per diem and other subsistence allowances for themselves, their wives and children, All Africa reported on December 12.
Justices Nathalia Kimaro, Kipenka Mussa and Ibrahim Juma ruled against TBL after upholding a ground of objection presented by the ex-workers through their advocate, Mr Odhiambo Kobas, in that the company had used a wrong approach to oppose the payments in question.
Mr Kobas, for the employees Edson Balongo, Ernest Kifaru, Ephata Urio, Endrew Ngeresai, Hamza Luinga, Festo Titla and Rockson Kiobya, had submitted that TBL would have approached the court by way of appeal instead of lodging applications for revision.
In their decision, the justices of the appeals court referred to Section 57 of the Labour Institution Act, 2004 which gives a party to the proceedings in the Labour Court to appeal against the decision of that court to the Court of Appeal on a point of law only.
