USA, PA: Appalachian Brewing Company embarks on its biggest expansion project
|
More craft soda and beer will be coming your way in Appalachian Brewing Company's biggest expansion in its 18-year history, thanks in part to a $1.762 million loan arranged through Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC, pennlive.com reported on December 29.
In a $4.3 million project, Appalachian is leveraging the loan plus its equity and financing through Centric Bank to establish its new brewpub and production facility on the Carlisle Pike in Silver Spring Township, and add more than $1 million in new equipment.
Craft soda production – a growing offshoot of the brewing industry - is moving from Appalachian's 50 N. Cameron St. facility to the new brewpub that opened in June in the former Sutliff Hummer building at 6462 Carlisle Pike.
Also, production of Appalachian's monthly specialty beers will move to this new site. Both changes will free up space at Cameron Street to double the current line of four flagship beers, said Jack Sproch, Appalachian CEO.
Sproch estimates the expansion will "probably quadruple" the craft soda production, and increase Appalachian's beer production by 25-30 percent.
About 45 new jobs have been created at the Carlisle Pike brewpub and craft soda manufacturing facility, which is expected to rise to 50 or more over time,

USA, MA: Wormtown Brewery to move to expanded facility
|
Wormtown Brewery will officially move into its expanded facility on Shrewsbury Street next week and its plans to open a tap room for public tastings are to set move forward in February, masslive.com reported on January 2.
Managing Partner David Fields said on January 2 that the construction of their new, larger facility on 72 Shrewsbury St. is complete and that they’ll begin brewing at the location as early as next week.
Planning for this expansion began over a year ago in the fall of 2013 in response to high demand for product. Fields has said they’re regularly getting requests for the beer from retailers and wholesalers that they simply couldn’t fill out of their former location at Peppercorn’s on Park Avenue.
Once brewing gets underway at the new facility, Wormtown expects they’ll be able to sell their brews statewide for the first time in the company's nearly five years in existence.
“Once we get the brewing under our belt, we’ll be looking to open our tap room, possibly in late February,” Fields said.
He said they’d like to host a grand opening along with their celebration of five years in business on St. Patrick’s Day, but no firm plans have been made yet.

USA, MT: Outlaw Brewing opens its doors in Bozeman
|
Beer enthusiasts rejoice with the arrival of Outlaw Brewing, a new brewery opening its doors in Bozeman, ABC Fox Montana News reported on December 27.
The more than 4,000 square foot facility, which opened on December 26, is located on North Twenty-Seventh Avenue.
"Much like Bozeman Brewing Company has really created a big neighborhood feel over there, we wanted to be able to do that on the north side of town," says co-owner Todd Hough, who hopes to immerse his business in the nearby residential neighborhood, "We love having all these houses in our back yard and we hope that we can all meet their neighbors and create a real sense of community."
Outlaw Brewing began about three years ago with a location in Belgrade.
The new Bozeman location, which is suited for live music, is open until 8 p.m. seven days a week.

US: AB InBev settles lawsuit over Kirin beer origin it sells in the US
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev has settled a lawsuit over deceptive marketing tied to the origin of the two brands of Kirin beer it sells in the US, Seeking Alpha reported on January 6.
The brewer was accused of misleading consumers into believing Kirin was a pure import. Consumers who purchased Kirin beer in the U.S. between October of 2009 and December of 2014 can claim a payment of $0.50 per six-pack.
A-B has a long alliance with Japanese brewer Kirin which allows it to sell and market the beers in the U.S.

USA, IL: Noon Whistle Brewing in Lombard makes beer to be appreciated at more flexible times
|
It’s 5 p.m. somewhere. Or, better yet, make that noon, because why wait until the evening to enjoy a freshly brewed beer?
That’s part of the thinking behind Noon Whistle Brewing, a brewery that recently opened in Lombard, MySuburbanLife.com reported on January 2.
Co-owner and brewmaster Paul Kreiner has been visiting Marquette, Wis., since he was a kid, and his family has a tradition that when the town whistle blows at noon, it’s time to crack open a beer.
Kreiner and his longtime friends, Mike Condon and Jim Cagle, are bringing this tradition to Lombard with a brewery that offers session beers, which have lower alcohol concentrations than typical craft beers, allowing them to be appreciated at more flexible times.
“If it works, it works,” Condon said. “Enjoy a beer if you want to.”
While the beers may be low on alcohol, they aren’t low on flavor, the owners said.
Kreiner, who enrolled at the Siebel Institute of Technology brewing school about three years ago, uses plenty of hops and Belgian yeast to bring out the flavors in the beer, helping to offset the fact that a smaller amount of ingredients are used in order to keep the alcohol level lower.
The three friends are all beer

USA, MN: Lupine Brewing Company gets approval for opening in St. Cloud
|
Another microbrewery is opening in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The city council gave their approval on January 5 to amend the General Development Plan to allow the operation of a brewery, tap room, and off-sale liquor sales in the former O’Hara’s location. The amendment was necessary because the new Lupine Brewing Company will not be serving food like the former O’Hara’s did, wjon.com reported.
Owner James Anderle of Hanover says they’ve been leasing the space, and brewing there, since August. Their beers are already available at a few locations around town. Anderle says they want to add growler sales, and initially offer some taste sampling. He says they’re not anticipating becoming a full-blown tap room right away. Access to the brewery will be from the back side of the building.
The upstairs restaurant space is vacant right now, and the building owner is hoping the microbrewery will help to attract a restaurant into that location.
Back into 2012 the State Legislature passed the Surly law, which allowed for the creation of on-site liquor sales and tap rooms in Minnesota. Last month the St. Cloud city council also gave their approval to the Beaver Island Brewing Company in downtown St. Cloud.

USA, NY: Nanobrewery Buffalo Brewing Company hoping to open in October
|
At first glance, a brick building on the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Spring Street in Buffalo, NY appears nothing more than a deserted garage. But take a closer look and you'll find there's something brewing behind its door, Time Warner Cable News reported on January 4.
John Domres said this is the home of The Queen City's latest suds shop, Buffalo Brewing Company.
"Our motto's 'Good neighbors, great beer' and we're going to live that to the fullest extent that we can,” owner Domres said.
The thought of opening a brewery has been on Domres' mind since 2006, but was put on the backburner as the recession hit two years later. In 2014, he secured the once-LaStella Bleach Factory building and scaled back his thoughts from a bigger operation to a nanobrewery.
"Let's get small, grow organically. No investors, just me and my wife."
A nanobrewery is a term for a very small brewery operation. How small though? Domres said their goal for the year is to brew about 350 barrels, or 8,000 gallons of beer. Comparatively speaking, microbreweries are allowed to produce 75,000 barrels a year.
"I'm going to have to work a real job still but after the fact I’m going to come

Ethiopia: SABMiller teams with Southwest Development PLC to establish new liquor factory in Ethiopia
|
Southwest Development PLC, an Ethiopian investment company, and its partner, SABMiller, the South African London-based brewery, have once again teamed up to establish a totally new liquor factory in Ethiopia, Ethiosports reported on January 4.
The new company, CAPTS SC, is established at a total investment capital of 70 million birr. Company sources said CAPTS SC built a liquor manufacturing plant on the outskirts of Ambo town, Senkele locality. Sources said the product brand called Black Lion includes whiskey, vodka, gin, ouzo, and cream. The new liquor factory has the capacity to produce 10,000 litres of liquor per hour. The new company will start supplying the Ethiopian market with new products in the coming few weeks. The company will also export the new products to African countries and the US. CAPTS SC will soon hold an official product launch ceremony in Addis Ababa.
SouthWest and SABMiller first forged partnership and bought the Ambo mineral water factory from the Ethiopian government in 2009 and made more than 30 million USD on expansion project that has transformed the company.
