Brewery news Canada, ON: Brewers react with scepticism to Beer Store ownership offer
Ontario brewers reacted with scepticism after the foreign-owned Beer Store offered them ownership stakes in the consortium that controls 80 per cent of beer sales in the province, Canadian Manufacturing reported on January 8.

“Ownership is a red herring issue The Beer Store is using to distract the media and the public,” said Andrea Woods Chiodo of Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery. “We have always been concerned with shelf space, accessibility, transparency and how store formats affect the retail experience.”

Jeff Fisher, owner of Indie Ale House in Toronto, said he wouldn’t be a real owner under The Beer Store’s offer, which he called a public relations exercise.

“The craft brewers can’t get together and say ‘let’s paint all the stores or let’s sell them,'” said Fisher. “You have no real say, so you’re an owner that gets to choose nothing. It does nothing for me.”

Under The Beer Store’s offer, Ontario brewers that sell more than five million litres a year would pay C$1,000, and smaller brewers C$100, to become owners and get one Class E or Class F share.

They are also being offered a total of three seats on the 15-member board of directors of The Beer Store.

Brewery news USA, WI: Point Brewery embarks on $1.5 mln expansion project
The craft beer trend is growing and with this growth comes expansion, which is the case at Point Brewery in Stevens Point, which announced a $1.5 million expansion on January 7, Wsaw.com reported.

Production volume increased 10 percent in 2014 and this gave them all the more reason and opportunity to decide to expand for the sixth year in a row in 2015. It is an expansion into the business that keeps on giving and growing.

For a brewery that started in 1857 and is one of the top three oldest breweries in the country, an expansion is nothing new for Point Brewery. This time around, major upgrades focus on packaging.

"This year's expansion includes a new can filler. It will help us grow from 180 cans a minute to 380 cans a minute on our filler speed. It will also give us the ability to do both 12 and 16 ounce can production," Director of Operations and Brew Master Gabe Hopkins said.

Hopkins also said the can filler will allow consumers to drink their craft beers in a single serve setting, which means more people will have access to Point brews.

The brewery will also offer better quality and longer shelf-life with new ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Magnolia Brewing expands to a large new production brewery
Magnolia Brewing has expanded to a second restaurant and large new production brewery in the Dogpatch (San Francisco), Drinks Business Review reported on January 7.

The brewery's rapid growth and expansion required $150,000 in growth funding to ensure they met their 2015 goals.

Magnolia chose to raise funding on Bolstr, a marketplace where emerging consumer, retail and manufacturing businesses can access growth capital from accredited investors. Magnolia needed the ability to raise capital quickly in order to expand production, improve packaging equipment and implement design work for a new line of packaged beers which are scheduled to roll out in 2015.

"We couldn't make enough beer to meet demand at the original brewery but now, with more capacity, we are finally able to expand our distribution footprint and grow beer sales," says Dave McLean, founder of Magnolia Brewing. "Working with Bolstr was the easiest way to quickly fund the capital expenditures required to keep up with our pace of growth."

Magnolia has always closely paired food with beer, and their newest restaurant, Smokestack, was named one of 2014's Top 100 Restaurant Openings in San Francisco by Thrillist.

"People are choosing to have an experience with your product, with your beer, with your food. I think ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Spoetzl Brewery expanding bottling and brewhouse operations
Anywhere Spoetzl Brewery brewmaster Jimmy Mauric goes, he sees his product, Victoria Advocate reported on January 8.

"Whenever I travel and see the beer, 'good product,'" he said he hears. "When you're in Vegas on Fremont Street and get Shiner Bock, I say 'man, we've arrived.'"

The 36-year brewmaster at Spoetzl Brewery and Shiner drinkers might begin to see double in the next few years. The brewery is expanding its bottling and brewhouse operations, giving it the capacity in late 2015 to make twice as much of the product, which can be found nationwide.

Additionally, the site will have a new hospitality space and gift shop.

The brewery ended 2014 having produced about 600,000 barrels of beer, Mauric said. When its state-of-the-art machinery is working in full effect, it will be able to produce 1.2 million barrels.

"We've got some growing we can do," Mauric said. "We've been growing here throughout the years. There's been a huge demand for our beer."

Shiner got its start in 1909 in Shiner and continues to be brewed and bottled at Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner. Now, the city and the beer's identity are used interchangeably.

"Shiner Bock put us on the map," Mauric said.

Shiner Mayor Fred Hilscher said the brewery is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Wrecking Bar Brewpub gets approval to build craft brewery in Gwinnett
The Gwinnett County Planning Commission helped pave the way this week for the owner of Atlanta's popular Wrecking Bar Brewpub to build a craft beer brewery in Gwinnett, Atlanta Business Chronicle reported on January 8.

Bob Sandage is asking Gwinnett to rezone 7 acres in Loganville for the business, reports Gwinnett Daily Post.

The planning board said at its January 6 meeting it will recommend the zoning change. The matter now goes to the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners for consideration later this month.

Only one person spoke in opposition to the plan during the board's meeting, the paper said.

Sandage said he expects to produce approximately 5,000 barrels of beer per year initially with each holding 31 gallons. Within five to 10 years, annual production could reach 10,000 to 15,000 barrels, the Gwinnett paper reported.

Sandage wants to build the brewery - which would be open for tours weekends - on the existing Dillwood Farms in the 4500 block of Brushy Ford Road. He said he plans to continue agricultural operations at the farm to supply produce to the Wrecking Bar Brewpub and others, the paper said.

Brewery news USA, OH: Two stay-at-home dads launch DogBerry Brewing in West Chester
After putting their science background to good use developing more than 30 beer recipes, stay-at-home dads Tony Meyer and Chris Frede are ready to take those beers public. They'll open their new brewery, DogBerry Brewing, in West Chester on January 8, Cincinnati.com reported on January 7.

Located at 7865 Cincinnati Dayton Road, it will be that area's first craft brewery and will focus on small-batch production, with limited tap room hours. DogBerry's one-barrel brew house and eight two-barrel fermenters put its capacity at about 235 barrels per year, but Meyer said they expect to brew only 180 to 200 during the first year.

Meyer, who fell in love with craft beer during visits to Seattle, where he has family, has been home-brewing off and on for about 16 years. Frede got into the hobby about three years ago and the duo – who met in 2000 while working in infectious disease research at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center – started getting together every few weeks to brew. Both are now stay-at-home fathers of three.

"The kids would play all summer and we would brew out in the driveway," Meyer said. "It grew organically and naturally. That's how we got to this point, and ...More info on site

Brewery news East Timor: Heineken’s new plant in East Timor to create around 200 direct jobs
In a press release issued on January 8, Heineken Asia Pacific said that it had signed a formal investment agreement with the government of Timor Leste.

Under the agreement, a multi-beverage plant will be built near Dili, the capital of Timor Leste, with construction to begin in 2015.

The plant would be able to manufacture a variety of drinks including beer, soft drinks and water.

The setting up of the plant and subsequent route-to-market is expected to create around 200 direct jobs within local sales and business operations, with another 800 indirect jobs created across retail trade, logistics, transport and other service providers over time.

Barley news Ukraine: Agriculture ministry, grain traders to meet next week regarding exports and local markets
Ukraine's agriculture ministry will meet major traders next week regarding exports and local markets after Russia's decision to curb its grain exports, traders and government sources said on January 8.

"The meeting is scheduled for January 13. We want to know their (the traders') plans," a government official, who declined to be identified, told Reuters.

Russia has introduced grain exports duties of at least 35 euros per tonne set to start from Feb. 1 to stabilise domestic prices.

In December, Moscow imposed informal export controls in a bid to cool down domestic prices.

Russia, expected to be the fourth-largest exporter this year, had been exporting record volumes from a large grain crop of 105 million tonnes as the rouble currency's plunging value spurred a dash for foreign exchange.

Ukraine, another top Black Sea grain exporter, said last month it had no plan to follow Russia's example and expected to sell its grain at a higher price as a result of the Russian move to curb sales.

The official said the government still had no plans to limit sales but traders said the agriculture ministry was likely to prepare a memorandum with traders for the 2014/15 season, as it has done in previous seasons. These allow for ...More info on site

Brewery news Cameroon: Trade Minister orders to freeze the prices of bottled beer in drinking establishments
The Cameroonian Trade Minister, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, announced in a January 5 press release a decision to freeze the price of bottled beer in drinking establishments “until further notice” despite brewing companies’ request that prices be adjusted to reflect the hike in excise duties as stipulated in the 2015 Finance Act, Business in Cameroun reports.

Indeed, in 2015, the tax administration will be collecting 143 FCFA per litre of beer instead of the previous 110 FCFA.

The announcement made by this cabinet member follows the practices noted among some wholesalers during the end-of-year festive season. Many drinking establishments and spirit retailers refused to sell their stock in order to benefit from the adjusted duty to make a larger profit.

The situation has come about from confusion among some consumers as well as questions surrounding the level of collaboration between the Trade and Finance Ministries in this affair. Breweries have been clambering more and more for the excise duty increase to be struck down for fear of “market collapse” in 2015. From now until January 15, the deadline for tax filing in Cameroon, a final decision will be made by the ad-hoc committee set-up within the Office of the Prime Minister to ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Campaign launched to save historic ale after Carlsberg’s decision to discontinue its production
A campaign has been launched to save a historic Burton ale after a brewing giant confirmed that it was going to stop making it, Burton Mail reported on January 8.

Carlsberg UK confirmed to the Mail that it was ceasing production of its Draught Burton Ale after they claimed demand for the drink fell to a level that was 'unsustainable'.

Now, politicians and well-placed members of the brewing fraternity are clamouring for the beer to live on in some 'way, shape or form'.

Renowned beer writer Roger Protz, editor of the Good Beer Guide, said: "The death of Draught Burton Ale (DBA) is an appalling blunder by Carlsberg UK and a misreading of the state of the beer market.
