Barley news USA: Craft brewers use four times more barley per barrel of beer than big brewers do
For decades, US beer lovers have denounced corporate-made brew as watered-down swill. Just how diluted is the product peddled by the two enormous dinosaurs that dodder over the US beer market, InBev (maker of Bud) and MillerCoors? In a new report, the US Department of Agriculture has numbers, Mother Jones reported on January 20.

Most beers, industrial or craft, get their substance—what experts call body, or mouth feel, as well as any sweet and toasty flavors—from malted barley. The USDA researchers crunched data on the US barley and beer markets, and found that craft brewers on average use four times more barley per barrel of beer than the giants do.

Which makes craft beer seem like a bit of a bargain. A six-pack of Miller Light retails for about $5.50 in Texas, while typical craft beers go for about $10 per six—not even twice the price for four times the barley (and flavor). (Craft beers also tend to contain much more of the other main ingredient in beer, hops). In essence, Big Beer (like Big Almond) has hit upon a profitable strategy for reselling tap water at a high markup.

Now, one way to look at it is: Isn't watery beer easier on ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev’s ‘aggressive’ pricing could benefit Boston Beer sales
One US analyst believes that a more aggressive US pricing strategy led by Anheuser Busch InBev could reignite sales growth for craft beer competitor Samuel Adams, BeverageDaily.com reported on January 15.

Vivien Azer from Cowen and Company made her comments in a note on January 14 that summed-up her impressions of the Beer Summit 2015 in Palm Beach, California – which featured presentations from top executives representing the likes of AB InBev, MillerCoors and Constellation Brands.

Reflecting on a presentation by AB InBev’s VP of consumer communications, Lucas Herscovici, Azer said the world’s biggest brewer was increasingly focused on digital to balance out its strong focus in past years – with up to 70% of its media spend – on a sports-centric strategy.

The company is de-emphasizing loyalist ‘retention’ to focus more on millennial consumers (wedded to their smartphones) to drive growth, and Cowen said AB InBev’s future media strategy hinges on digital, experiential and media strands, with savings from classical media reinvested in brands.

“Looking ahead the key question for us will be the impact that AB InBev’s market share aspirations have on the underlying growth of the category,” Azer wrote.

Beer volume finished 2014 in growth, but this was driven ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Druthers Brewing Co. to start brewing at its second facility in Albany this spring
Druthers Brewing Co. will soon be brewing between 30 and 60 barrels of beer in Albany to serve multiple locations and sell the craft beer off-premise, Albany Business Review reported on January 16.

Druthers is moving into a second location in Albany's warehouse district this spring, while also renovating the kitchen at McGregor Links County Club in Wilton and expanding the brewery's original location in Saratoga Springs.

"It's a hectic time for us, that's for sure," said George de Piro, one of four owners of the brewery. de Piro, who oversees the brewing operations, is one of four owners, along with Chris Martell, Victor Sosnowski and Ric Martell.

He said the Albany location could open in mid- to late-March, but no exact date is set. The brewing equipment will ship next week.

The owners have been talking about the second location for Druthers since October 2012, two months after the Saratoga location opened on Broadway. It took three years and $2.5 million to get the Saratoga location up and running, so the owners started discussing the second location for Druthers early. It will take about the same amount of money to open the Albany location.

Druthers' Albany location will be significantly larger than the space in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Nine Giant Brewing to open in Cincinnati by summer
Brothers-in-law Brandon Hughes and Mike Albarella are working to open Nine Giant Brewing, a microbrewery and gastropub, in Pleasant Ridge, Cincinnati, Ohio, Cincinnati.com reported on January 19.

If all goes well, they'll be serving their beer and what they're calling "elevated bar food" by late summer at 6095 Montgomery, near the intersection with Ridge.

Albarella has been home brewing for about 20 years, before he was legally old enough to drink. Hughes has a business background. Though they lived on opposite coasts, they'd spend family visits – their wives are sisters – talking about combining their skill sets to open a brewery in Cincinnati, close to family.

"When we started talking about this (about three years ago), there wasn't craft beer here," said Hughes, who was born in Bethel. He lived in California for about six years before moving back last April with an eye toward launching the brewery. Mike, a native of South Bend, Ind., relocated to Cincinnati from Brooklyn about three years ago. "This place has gone from a fizzy yellow beer town to a craft beer mecca."

They'll add to the city's craft beer offerings with brews that balance hops, malt and yeast character, Hughes said.

"Our concept on beer is really ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Junction Craft Brewing hints at looking for a new location
Junction Craft Brewing in Toronto has dropped a hint that it may be planning for a move and substantial expansion in the near future, Canadian Beer News reported on January 12.

In a video posted to YouTube, Junction partners Tom Paterson and Doug Pengelly are shown touring the Symes Road Incinerator – a historic building owned by the City of Toronto that has been abandoned for a number of years – with the caption “Future home of Junction Brewery? Stay tuned…”.

Located at 150 Symes Road, the Incinerator building is approximately a mile from the current Junction brewery and a great deal larger, so a move there would undoubtedly allow for much more brewing capacity. It’s also just steps from 100 Symes Road, an industrial building that will be home to the soon-to-open Rainhard Brewing.

Brewery news Canada, BC: Bridge Brewing announces new capacity increase
Bridge Brewing – a company that opened in mid-2012 as “the 1st nanobrewery in Vancouver,” and subsequently grew to microbrewery status after just over a year of business – has announced that it is increasing capacity once again, and making a move to accommodate the expansion, Canadian Beer News reported on January 9.

On January 14th, the brewery was planning to leave its current 930 square foot space on Dollarton Highway, and reopen the following day in a more spacious 4,500 square foot location at 1448 Charlotte Road in North Vancouver.

The move will allow Bridge to substantially increase its brewing capacity, moving up to 5,000 barrels annually from the current 1,500 barrels.

Brewery news USA, RI: Foolproof Brewing Company launches second expansion project
After two years in business, Foolproof Brewing Company launched its second expansion last week. The brewery, which pairs "high-quality, hand-crafted beers with life experiences," now has a new 60-barrel fermentation tank (approximately 1,900 gallons,) increasing its beer production capacity by 25 percent, The Valley Breeze reported on January 20.

"It has been a whirlwind couple of years for us so far," said Nick Garrison, president and founder of Foolproof. "This expansion will help us keep up with demand in our new and existing markets but also provide the flexibility and capacity to introduce new beer styles and packaging formats in 2015."

With the expansion, Foolproof will have the largest beer production capability in the state. Since opening in January 2013, the brewery has expanded its distribution footprint from Rhode Island to Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Dallas, Texas. The company now employs five full-time staff members as well as a number of part-time employees.

Foolproof's year-round offerings include Barstool American golden ale, Raincloud robust porter, Backyahd IPA, and La Ferme Urbaine (LFU) farmhouse ale. The brewery also produces a line of rotating specialty beers, including Revery Russian imperial stout, King of the Yahd imperial IPA, Augtoberfest festbier, and coming in February, Shuckolate ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Mt. Begbie Brewing planning move to new location in Revelstoke
The Revelstoke Times Review reports that Mt. Begbie Brewing is planning a move from its current location in downtown Revelstoke to a new and larger facility in the Johnson Heights area of the city.

According to the article, the new brewery would be between 12,000 and 15,000 square feet, and would allow Mt. Begbie to increase capacity from 6,000 to 15,000 hectolitres per year, as well offer brewery tours and other amenities not possible in the current smaller location.

The move will require the property at 2155 Oak Drive in Johnson Heights to be rezoned to allow a brewery to be located there, but assuming it’s approved, owners Tracy and Bart Larson hope to start construction on a new facility in the fall of 2015.

Brewery news Zimbabwe: SABMiller’s Delta Corp. reports 10% sales drop in quarter through December
Delta Corp., the Zimbabwean brewer that’s the country’s biggest company by market value, said sales fell 10 percent in the three months through December as output of sorghum beer declined and consumer spending remained weak, Bloomberg reported on January 20.

Sorghum beer volume was down 1 percent in the quarter on lower supplies of the Chibuku Super brand caused by lower brewing capacity and power outages, Delta said in a statement on January 20. That reversed a surge in popularity for the drink due to its lower price tag than lager. Sorghum is a type of plant grown in Africa and used for food and biofuels as well as beer.

“The trading environment remains difficult as reflected by the subdued consumer spending during the traditional holiday peak period,” Delta said in a statement. The company is about 23 percent owned by SABMiller Plc, the London-based maker of Peroni, Grolsch and Castle lagers.

Zimbabwe’s economy is projected to grow 3.2 percent this year, according to the International Monetary Fund, from an estimated 3.1 percent last year, which was the slowest rate since contraction in 2008. The southern African country has been hurt by lower metal prices affecting the mining industry and declining foreign investment.

Brewery news Japan: Craft beer popularity makes major brewers invest in this segment
After a short-lived boom in the 1990s, craft beer is catching on once again among thirsty Japanese consumers, The Japan Times reported on January 21.

Retailer Aeon Co. started stocking up to 90 craft and imported beers at 250 stores nationwide in December last year, and sales have been strong. “More and more people have started enjoying their unique taste,” said an Aeon spokesman.

Convenience store chain Lawson Inc. last year released a limited run of products jointly developed with Yo-Ho Brewing Co., a leading craft brewer based in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, which is known for its Yona Yona Ale beer.

“The limited-run beer was more popular than expected and the company was able to reach new customers, including young people and women,” a Lawson spokesman said.

Over the past year, Lawson has doubled its craft beer portfolio to 11 brands, including domestic and imported products.

A variety of craft brands were created across the country after restrictions on breweries eased in 1994. The boom was short-lived, however, as many of the products were poor in quality.

Craft beers have started to regain attention in recent years as brewers using better technology began to lead the market.

This year, Yo-Ho Brewing will start to outsource part of ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: AB InBev criticized for long payment terms
AB InBev, the brewing giant behind Budweiser, Stella Artois and Boddingtons, has been criticised by the government for imposing excessively long payment terms on its small UK suppliers, Citya.m. reported on January 19.

Brewpack, which supplies conveyor belt systems, told the BBC that it could no longer afford to take orders from AB InBev because it demanded payment terms of 120 days after receiving an invoice.

Business minister Matt Hancock said such long delays were unacceptable. "These payment practices hit small businesses hardest and I am determined to stamp them out," he told the BBC.

AB InBev defended its practices on January 18, saying the payment terms were set "in mutual agreement" with suppliers.

"Like many other global companies, we review our payment terms and conditions regularly in accordance with good commercial practices and applicable law," a spokesperson said.
