Brewery news USA & Belgium: Oregon’s Mazama Brewing and Belgium’s Brouwerij de Plukker to brew together a Belgian American IPA
Mazama Brewing Company in Corvallis, Oregon and Belgian Brouwerij de Plukker are collaborating to brew a Belgian American IPA later this month, The Daily Meal reported on January 22.

Kris Langouche and Joris Cambie of de Plukker will travel to the Mazama Brewery to brew with founder and Head Brewer, Jeff Tobin, on January 26th and 27th. The beer will feature a Belgian yeast strain cultivated by Mazama and Pilgrim hops grown on de Plukker’s organic hop farm.

This collaboration is the first international collaboration for each family-owned brewery. “This is an exciting opportunity to work directly with Belgian brewers because much of our beer lineup has a Belgian influence,” said Jeff Tobin of Mazama Brewing Co. Kris Langouche, brewer and co-founder of De Plukker stated, “We are looking forward to meet Jeff and the Mazama team to see how they run their brewery and approach the brewing process. Since they brew Belgian inspired ales we will feel right at home!”

Founded in 2013 by Jeff & Kathy Tobin, Mazama Brewing Company specializes in brewing fresh Northwest- and Belgian-inspired ales. Mazama focuses on a balanced approach to traditional beer styles, while also taking advantage of fresh local hops and fruit to create ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev to idle bottling line in Newark, New Jersey and lay off 60 employees
Anheuser-Busch InBev plans to idle its bottling line in Newark, New Jersey, by the end of the first quarter, resulting in 60 layoffs, St. Louis Business Journal reported on January 22.

The Newark brewery produces several brands, the company said, including Budweiser and Bud Light.

"We are always looking for ways to improve the way we do business, and this includes optimizing the capabilities of our brewery system to meet consumer and geographic needs," Kevin Lee, general manager of the Newark brewery, said in a statement, adding that the decision to idle the line was made "after a thorough study."

"... We will move equipment that adds value to another brewery. For example, we plan to relocate the bottle line's multi-packer to Williamsburg," Lee said.

In November the Business Journal reported that recent A-B layoffs affected at minimum many dozens of employees across numerous departments, including information technology; field sales; procurement; and brand, experiential and trade marketing. Many of those cuts, but not all, were in St. Louis. The company closed its regional sales office in Charlotte, North Carolina, for example. However, last month the company announced it plans to invest $150 million to expand its metal container facility in Arnold, adding 70 jobs.

Brewery news USA, CA: Mraz Brewing Company moving into new location soon
Mraz Brewing Company founder and brewmaster Mike Mraz will start moving into a new, 3,000 square foot production facility in El Dorado Hills in coming months to keep up with the growing demand of his American and Belgian style ales, The Folsom Telegraph reported on January 21.

The site, located approximately two miles south of the current brewery and tap room on Francisco Dr., will be home to a new brewing and tasting area, as well as one of the largest barrel-aging programs in the region, Mraz said.

“We’re really excited about the move,” Mraz said. “It’ll give us the space we need to produce more beer. It will also allow us to really focus on increasing our barrel-aging capabilities, something we’re becoming known for. Right now, it’s difficult holding beer back for our tap room. The more people learn about us, the more they want our beer.”

The industrial building will be used exclusively for barrel aging upon the planned February move-in.

Mraz said he anticipates having the brewing system transitioned into the new location by late 2015.

“We’ll add as much barrelage as I can fill in the beginning, with the goal being about a 100-barrel capacity,” Mraz said.

The location will initially be ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MS: Chandeleur Brewing Co. opens in Gulfport
Cain and Cam Roberds opened Chandeleur Brewing Co. in Gulfport, MS with the goal of making locally brewed fresh beer. In doing so, they have become the third and newest Coast microbrewery in the lower Coast counties, after Lazy Magnolia and Crooked Letter Brewing Co, SunHerald.com reported on January 22.

January 22 marked a milestone in reaching that goal -- the grand opening of the brewery was from 3 to 8 p.m. It was the first opportunity for Coast residents to tour the brewery and taste the four beers Chandeleur Brewing Co. offers.

The Roberds brothers, contractors by profession, helped build the Fairhope Brewing Co. in Fairhope, Ala., and after doing so decided to start their own brewery.

In December 2013, they purchased an 8,000-square-foot building in downtown Gulfport, and after little more than a year, the brewery is producing four keg-only beers, with a canning line in works for the future.

The tasting room, which occupies 1,900 square feet of the building, is decked out with many high top tables and a wooden bar fashioned with the stern of a ship at its center. Nautical and fish-themed art lines the walls. The remaining 7,100 square feet are mostly dedicated to the brewing equipment, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Schooner’s Grille & Brewery looking for space to build production brewery
Antioch’s brewpub Schooner’s Grille & Brewery is currently looking for a space to build a production brewery and begin offering their award-winning beers in bottles, mercurynews.com reported on January 21.

The restaurant and brewery was purchased by new owners last May, and they planned from the beginning to start packaging the beer. But recently they decided to close the restaurant as of February 1, 2015.

So Schooner’s beer will likely be a little harder to find for a few months, while they transition from brewpub to production brewery.

Longtime brewer at Schooner’s, Craig Cauwels, said they hope to be brewing in a new space by mid-to-late summer. They may contract some beer during the downtime, but a final decision on that hasn’t been made yet, and will most likely be dependent upon how the search for a new building for the brewery is going. They expect to know more about potential sites for the brewery over the next month.

Cauwels also will be investing in the new brewery, and will become a partner in the venture.

Brewery news Australia: Alcohol consumption down 25% over the last 40 years
New research shows Australians are drinking a full 25% less alcohol than they did 40 years ago. While beer producers probably aren’t happy about this, there is a definite upside: it has dramatically curbed alcohol-related violence, FoodProcessing.com.au reported on January 23.

The government report, Australia’s Changing Drinking Habits, disproves commonly held beliefs that alcohol consumption and alcohol-related violence are increasing.

In 1974-75, Australians consumed an average of 13.1 litres of alcohol per person. Since the 1980s, this has declined, decreasing to 9.9 litres in 2012-13. Teenagers are drinking significantly less, with the proportion of young people abstaining increasing from 56% in 2007 to 72% in 2013.

Interestingly, alcohol-related violence has decreased by 30% in NSW in the last six years, despite the number of liquor licences increasing by 16%. Terry Mott, CEO of the Australian Liquor Stores Association, says this proves a lack of evidence between alcohol availability and violence.

This increase in the number of liquor stores has also not led to an increase in alcohol consumption.

“Australia’s drinking habits have changed significantly over the course of the four decades; we are more educated about alcohol and we are making much better choices than we ever have before,” said Mott.

“The majority of Australians consume ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Cocal-Cola Amatil, Casella Family Brands create joint venture to launch craft beers and ciders
Casella Family Brands has partnered with Coca-Cola Amatil in a joint venture to launch a range of Australian craft beers and ciders, Food Magazine reported on January 23.

Yenda—located approximately 550 kilometres west of Sydney—is not a conventional manufacturing hub. The broad appeal of Australian wines in the US, UK and Asian markets and the exponential rise in export sales in the mid-2000s has seen massive investment in wine storage, bottling lines and world class processes.

For Australian Beer Company general manager Derek O'Donnell, the partnership of Casella Family Brands with Coca-Cola Amatil is a strong foundation for a marriage made in heaven.

“Casella Family Brands is built on strong family values, combined with passion for success and an entrepreneurial spirit. Coca-Cola Amatil brings economies of scale and one of the leading routes to market capabilities in the domestic market,” O’Donnell said.

Craft beer sales are growing increasingly in popularity, despite a downturn in total beer sales nationally. Only 10 weeks after launching Yenda Pale Ale, it has performed well since its release, earning a silver medal at the Royal Sydney Beer Show and the Australian Craft Awards. The full Yenda range of Yenda Pale Ale, Yenda IPA, Yenda Hell (an unfiltered Helles lager) ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Belgium’s leading brewers to raise their prices
InBev Belgium and Alken-Maes brewery will increase their Pilsen beer prices as from February, 1, Belga reported on January 22.

InBev explains the 1.7 eurocents increase per glass of beer by the necessity of financing its long-term investments. The brewing giant’s investments in its Belgian facilities increased by more than EUR100 mln per year.

Alken-Maes did not disclose the exact increase figure, stating that “it varies by product”. A company spokesperson, however, admitted that the majority of its brands will become more expensive.

Haacht brewery, another large beer maker in Belgium, plans to raise its prices at the beginning of March, by around 3% depending on the product.

Brewery news Swaziland: Swaziland Beverages Limited announces price increases
Alcoholic beverages prices will be going up with effect from February 2, Swaziland Beverages Limited announced on January 21.

Beer Sales Manager Meshack Maseko stated that the new prices would affect mainly the 340ml and 750ml bottles which comprise beer, draughts, ciders and soft drinks of returnable and non returnable bottles when buying at wholesale price or at a drinking spot.

“Each and every time prices are reviewed for the new year hence the changes. We have increased just a few products but managed to maintain most of them,” stated Maseko.

He further said they had already sent information to their customers about the price changes which then will clarify on what has gone up and by how much.

In addition, Maseko highlighted that the average price increase was below inflation which had declined to 6.2 percent in the country.
