Africa: SABMiller sees Africa as source of opportunity and growth
|
World’s second largest brewer, SABMiller is starting to experience very little organic growth, with first half revenue up only 3 percent renewing speculation that the South African company may consider the alleged merger ambitions to offset slowing growth. The company’s head of Africa, Mark Bowman, however insisted that the brewer would maximise the opportunities it has to develop and grow its business, Ventures Africa reported on January 28.
“We see Africa within SABMiller as a source of opportunity and growth and we are trying to maximise that opportunity in a responsible way,” Bowman said.
According to a study by Wall Street’s premier sell-side research and brokerage firm, Bernstein Research, Africa’s brewing industry is yet to be truly tapped. The US-based firm describes Africa, as perhaps, the most attractive region for long-term profit growth for global brewers. “African [profit] margins have more headroom and better (very) long-term growth prospects,” it said in a research note.
Bowman said Zimbabwe has been very challenging for the SABMiller. The company has had to endure strongly negative growth for two years, largely because of weaker economic growth in the southern African country. With a little resurgence of the economy, as the dollar rose, the brewer

Angola: Government sets maximum quota for beer imports
|
The government of Angola has set a maximum quota for the import of products included in the basic basket of goods in 2015 at around 2 million tons, including cooking oil, flour, rice and sugar, according to a joint executive decree dated 23 January.
The decree, signed by the Ministers of Finance, Agriculture, Fisheries, Industry, Commerce and Transport, together with the National Bank of Angola, aims to “ensure food and nutritional security of the people” and take regulatory measures which ensure domestic supply of over 60 percent of national consumption.
The document set for the entire 2015 year a general import quota of 2.04 million tons of the basic basket products split amongst cooking oil (334,000 tons), corn meal (99,000), wheat flour (688,000) salt (100,000), rice (457,000) and sugar (367 438).
The same decree sets a general import quota of soft drinks and beverages for this year of 950 000 hectolitres spread over waters (150,000 hectolitres), soft drinks (200,000), beer (400,000) and juice (200,000).
João Abecasis, head of Portugal’s leading brewer Unicer, said he hopes Luanda will revise the quota for beer and that, eventually, it will be Angola who will lose in fiscal revenues.
Unicer’s sales to Angola annually exceed 7 mln litres of

UK: Carlsberg partnering with an additional eight breweries to extend its beer portfolio
|
Carlsberg is partnering with an additional eight breweries to extend its beer portfolio across its 2015 Tapster’s Cask Ale range that will be available for on-trade customer orders this month, The Morning Advertiser reported on January 21.
The latest additions for 2015 include Business As Usual from Derby Brewing Company, Double Dragon from Felinfoel Brewery, Gower Gold from Gower Brewery, Rivet Catcher from Jarrow Brewing Company and Jaipur IPA from Thornbridge Brewery.
The Tapster’s permanent range consists of 55 ales available nationwide, all year-round. The 30 brewers featured in the 2015 range include Tetley’s, Adnams, Camerons, Fuller’s, Greene King, Hook Norton, Marston’s, Robinsons, St Austell and Thwaites.
Carlsberg’s Tapster’s Extra Choice range comprises nearly 100 additional ales available on bi-monthly rotation offering cask ale variety from breweries across the UK.
Paul Waller, director of customer service and third party brands at Carlsberg UK, said: “The beer category in the UK flourished in 2014 with new breweries and ales coming onto the market all the time. We are proud that so many additional breweries have chosen to partner with us and we are confident that our new brochure will be a valuable tool for boosting cask ale sales.”

South Korea: German beers account for the largest share in Korea’s rising beer import
|
Import beers are rising in popularity in Korea, with their share in discount stores’ overall beer sales surging to over 30 percent for the first time in history, Korea IT Times reported on January 30.
According to Lotte Mart on January 29, the share of import beers in its overall beer sales rose to 30 percent last year from 25.4 percent in 2013, 19.5 percent in 2012, 16.7 percent in 2011, and 13.3 percent in 2010.
Major retailers, encouraged by the rising popularity of import beers, introduced a wider range of import beers, which, in turn, expanded customer access to import beers.
German beers accounted for the largest share of 30.9 percent in Korea’s beer imports last year, followed by those from Japan with 22 percent, the Netherlands with 11.5 percent, Belgium with 6.6 percent, and the United States with 6.1 percent.
German beers overtook Japanese ones last year, first in history. Until 2013, Japanese beers had enjoyed the position as the best-selling import beers in Korea.

UK: Price gap between barley and wheat removed by high export interest
|
Export interest has removed the price gap between barley and wheat in many areas in the UK, Farmers’ Weekly reported on January 29.
Ex-farm feed barley prices midweek ranged from £110-119/t compared with feed wheat at £116-£122/t.
However in many counties, barley and wheat values were equal.
To some extent the UK was benefiting from France doing more barley export business with China this season, to which the UK was not an approved exporter, said Openfield’s head of desk Glenn Mason.
Barley is benefiting from slightly higher brewing, malting and distilling use at home but the 2014 crop produced about 2 mln tonnes more than domestic requirements for potential export or carryover into next season.
The latest export statistics show UK barley exports between July and November 2014 at 559,000 tonnes, their second highest level since 2003-04.
Although this is lower than the previous season, some large cargoes have shipped since the end of November, with barley the preferred feed grain in Saudi Arabia and some Asian markets.
The figures to the end of November show 35% of UK barley exports going to non-EU destinations.
Relative currency values are playing a huge part in grain pricing, and although the pound continues to gain against the euro, both
