USA, OR: Craft Brew Alliance reports preliminary 2014 results
|
Craft Brew Alliance, Inc. (“CBA”), a leading craft brewing company, on February 5 announced its preliminary financial results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2014.
Net sales increased 12% over the prior year, exceeding the $200 million milestone, which reflects continued momentum across the brewer’s core brand families, Kona Brewing, Widmer Brothers Brewing, Redhook Ale Brewery, and Omission Beer.
Shipments grew 10%, compared to 4% in 2013, due primarily to increasing consumer demand in key markets and ongoing efforts to normalize wholesaler inventory levels.
Despite an approximate 25% reduction in SKUs, depletions grew 7%, compared to 11% in 2013, further underscoring the strength of CBA’s Kona Brewing, Widmer Brothers, Redhook, and Omission brands.
Gross margin expanded by 130 basis points to 29.4% in 2014, compared to 28.1% in 2013, which highlights the company’s continued achievement in driving core business health as its steers towards its long-term gross margin target of 35% in 2017.
Contract brewing and beer related sales increased by 33% over the prior year.
Selling, general and administrative expense (“SG&A”) grew by $6.5 million to $53.0 million, which is 26% of net sales and level with SG&A percentage of net sales in 2013.
Diluted earnings per share (“EPS”) increased to $0.16

Canada, ON: Elora Brewing to open to the public in May
|
15 years after the closure of Old Mill Brewery, the small town of Elora is set to be home to a brewery again, with the upcoming opening of Elora Brewing, Canadian Beer News reported on February 4.
The five partners behind the brewery intend to have the brewhouse, tap room and retail store open to the public in May.
In the meantime, an initial batch of Three Fields Unfiltered Triple Grain Lager – brewed with barley, wheat, and rye, and described as having “a distinct malt profile that begins with subtle notes of citrus and finishes smooth, dry, and crisp” – has been brewed elsewhere under contract, and will be available soon at select bars and pubs in Elora and surrounding area.

USA, ME: Shipyard Brewing planning $4 mln expansion
|
Amid massive 300-barrel fermentation tanks, there’s a small setup in the Shipyard brewery that puts out 1.5 barrels beer at a time, Bangor Daily News reported on February 6.
“Keeping our brewers excited about brewing and keeping our customers interested in what’s going on at the brewery are two big areas we talk a lot about,” founder Fred Forsley said on a tour of the brewery Thursday. “That’s kind of the goal, to make sure we don’t get stale.”
The company hopes to position itself for a new role in the rapidly growing craft beer industry with $4 million in investment, direct control of distribution in more states and legislative changes that would let other breweries use its equipment during slow periods for Shipyard.
While there’s millions of investment on the way, some of the efforts to stay fresh are for “talk value,” Forsley said.
The big kid on the block of Maine’s beer scene has put out special releases, used its Federal Jack’s and Sea Dog pubs as test audiences, and in March will roll out its first seasonal diversion from the ringwood yeast at the heart of its beers, in the form of a German pilsner.
But that new beer doesn’t represent a

USA, CA: Dragas Brewing to launch in Rocklin on February 14
|
A new microbrewery in Rocklin wants to separate itself from the traditional bar scene - so much, in fact, that it includes purse hooks for its female guests, Sacramento Business Journal reported on February 5.
"We wanted to make something that was women-friendly," said Dan Acuff, chief operations officer for Dragas Brewing Industries Inc.
The business at 5860 Pacific St. expects to hold its grand opening on Feb. 14. It covers nearly 5,000 square feet and will include 10 beer taps. Acuff expects to serve seven regular brews and three rotating varieties.
Its website lists brews such as a "stout of fire," which combines vanilla flavors with a chili pepper infusion.
Dragas Brewing will feature a microbrewery and tasting room, but will not serve its own food. Instead, Acuff will coordinate with local food trucks.
The family-owned business also includes Acuff's wife, Diana Acuff, and his brother, Shane Acuff. His friend, Dylan Clark, is the master brewer.
Acuff was originally interested in wine. "We used to have this romanticized dream of owning a vineyard and a winery," he said. After realizing how long it would take to develop wine that was ready to sell, his attention turned toward beer.
Acuff said a spacious tasting room makes Dragas

Canada, AB: Two Sergeants Brewing planned for opening in Fort Saskatchewan later this year
|
Prairie beer blog On Beer reports that two former military men are planning to open the first ever brewery in Fort Saskatchewan – a small city northeast of Edmonton – later this year.
Two Sergeants Brewing was originally intended to be a brewpub with a full restaurant, but due to the worsening economic situation in Alberta, partners Kevin Moore (ex-Canadian Armed Forces) and Keith Edwards (ex-British Royal Air Force) decided to scale back their plans, and will now be opening a smaller brewery with an on-site tasting room and retail store.
The planned opening date and other details for the brewery are still to be confirmed, but Moore tells On Beer that they plan to launch with Bangalore Torpedo IPA as a flagship brand, and expect a Pilsner and Witbier to follow soon afterward.

Canada, ON: Stouffville Brewing hoping to strike partnership for opening new brewery later this year
|
YorkRegion.com reports that the owners of Stouffville Brewing are hoping to strike a partnership with the town of Whitchurch-Stouffville to open a brewery and taproom in a downtown building later this year.
Founded by Bill Perrie and Jim Williamson, Stouffville currently has its single brand – Red Falcon Ale – brewed under contract at Wellington Brewery.
Should the proposed partnership be accepted by the town, the partners plan on having the building – which was originally a post office, and more recently senior’s centre and insurance office – fully renovated to accommodate a brewery, tasting room, retail shop and patio.
Perrie and Williamson are asking the municipality to contribute C$300,000 toward “bringing the building up to standards for leasing long term,” while they and their partners will invest C$350,000 on construction of the facility, and will pay a proposed C$50,000 in annual rent to the town.

USA, TX: Freetail Brewing Co. to expand beer distribution in Texas
|
Freetail Brewing Co. announced plans to expand its beer distribution to San Antonio's surrounding counties and the Houston area later this year, My San Antonio reported on February 4.
The San Antonio-based brewery teamed with Tri-City Distributors to expand its beer sales to Comal, Guadalupe and Gonzales counties, according to a news release. Additionally, Freetail is working with Silver Eagle Distributors, the brewery's distributor for the San Antonio area, to increase its reach into the Houston market.
Beer in bottles, cans and draft is expected to hit San Antonio's surrounding counties in the spring. The Houston area will get Freetail in draft by the spring with the full assortment in the fall.
Freetail opened a second brewing facility late last year near downtown San Antonio. Since it started brewing there in October, Freetail was able to post a 100 percent increase in beer production compared to all of 2013, the news release states.

USA, MI: Detroit's first nano-brewery scheduled for this month
|
The launch of Detroit's first nano-brewery is about to take flight, WXYZ reported February 4.
"It's an adrenaline rush man, it's a buzz for sure," said Stephen Roginson, one of four partners in Batch Brewing Company. "We've put a lot of time and effort into this."
Nano means small. Small batches of beer. For Roginson and his partners that means eight kegs at a time.
"We really focus on producing a very clean, drinkable product," said Roginson. "We do session beers but we also do bigger beers as well. We've got a beer on tap that's 4.5% alcohol and we've got a beer on tap that's over 10% alcohol."
Pat Ahrens, another partner, is actively involved in the brewing process.
"People ask me what my favorite style of beer is and I always say beer that's made well and so that's what we do," Ahrens said.
Batch Brewing Company earned a $50,000 cash award for being named winner of the 2013 Hatch Detroit contest. It helped them build the business and settle on their location on Porter street off Trumbull near Michigan Avenue.
"We're down the street from Mudgie's, we're across the street from Brew Detroit and we're kiddie-corner from Le Petit Zinc in this really interesting

UK: Molson Coors’ Burton brewery still not working
|
Bosses at a Burton brewing giant have confirmed that production at a £1 million micro-brewery in Burton has still not resumed, Burton Mail reported on February 5.
Molson Coors chiefs said efforts to improve working conditions at the William Worthington Brewery, based at the National Brewery Centre, in Horninglow Street, are still continuing and no date has yet been set for it to reopen.
Production was ‘temporarily paused’ in April last year while senior figures worked on several ‘safety’ improvements across the site.
A spokesman for Molson Coors said: “The Worthington brand is an important part of our Burton heritage and our brewing future.”
A major review was sparked to look at how machinery could be ’reconfigured to make brewing, cleaning and maintenance easier’ at the site, which opened in 2010 with a blaze of publicity.
The company is still using existing stocks of the brewery’s beers and bosses confirmed that historic ales such as Worthington’s White Shield are now being brewed at the firm’s main Station Street site in the town to ensure they will still be available for customers.
A spokesman for Molson Coors said: “We haven’t stopped production and packaged beer is available as normal.”
Bosses were also still quick to stress that the

Australia: Beer and spirits companies say wine industry not paying fair share of alcohol taxes
|
Australia’s beer and spirits companies say wine companies aren’t paying their fair share of the A$6 billion in alcohol taxes collected each year by the federal government, The Australian Financial Review reported on February 5.
The wine industry is pleading special circumstances, arguing its 2500 companies shouldn’t be taxed more because it has one production cycle a year, following grape harvest in February and March.
Intense lobbying is happening in Canberra for favourable treatment in the May budget, creating angst between rival parts of the alcohol industry.
The latest increase in excise on beer and spirits, on February 2, has further riled beer and spirits makers. Spirits companies argue that for a bottle of spirits selling for A$75, they pay A$30 in federal tax through excise and GST, which is a big impost and distorts the choices available to shoppers.
Beer consumption in Australia has dropped by more than 8 per cent in the past six years. Tim Cooper, managing director of Cooper’s Brewery, is the new chairman of the Brewers Association of Australia and New Zealand, which includes Carlton & United Breweries, maker of Victoria Bitter, and Lion, maker of Tooheys and XXXX, and he said twice-yearly excise rises are a big factor

Japan: Suntory Holdings Ltd aims to double revenue at its Beam business
|
Japan's Suntory Holdings Ltd aims to double revenue at its Beam spirits business to $10 billion in five years as it capitalises on the growing popularity of drinks like whisky and bourbon and forays further into developing markets, its new president was quoted as saying by Reuters on February 5.
Suntory last year bought U.S. bourbon maker Beam for $16 billion, propelling the company to rank No. 3 in the global spirits market after Diageo and Pernod Ricard.
The company, the first to bring single malt whisky to Japan in the 1920s, has set itself ambitious growth plans - aiming for a near doubling of overall revenue to 4 trillion yen ($34 billion) by 2020 compared to levels expected for last year.
Former president Nobutada Saji had said another acquisition may be necessary to help meet that goal, but Takeshi Niinami said the jump in popularity of so-called brown liquors had meant much of that growth could be achieved without a big purchase.
"I am not ruling out acquisitions as possibility. There could be small ones along the way," he told Reuters in an interview.
"But we can exceed 4 trillion yen without an acquisition of Beam's scale, one that would be worth hundreds of
