Is later harvest always better? It depends...
ABSTRACT
The effect of date of harvest with Willamette and Cascade hops, already mentioned in the Newsletter march 2012, is now published in a comprehensive article. In summary, with a later harvest the hop oil content increases and the composition changes in regard to single components such as alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, myrcene, limonene, methyl heptanoate, and linalool. These changes of course also affect the sensory profile of the hop oil. Although trials with Hallertau Mittelfrueh had shown that later picked hops led to a consumer preference with regard to dry-hopped beers, this did not hold true for similar trials with Cascade hops. Like with everything in the world... it depends!

USA: AB InBev reported to have approached Cigar City Brewing with acquisition proposal
|
A Tampa, Florida-based craft brewer, Cigar City Brewing, was approached by Anheuser-Busch last year about a possible sale, the Tampa Tribune reported on February 7.
Cigar City Brewing founder and owner Joey Redner said he was approached by A-B about setting a meeting to talk about an acquisition last year, but a second meeting was never held, according to the newspaper.
Redner did not immediately return calls seeking comment from the Post-Dispatch. In December 2013, Redner told the Post-Dispatch his brewery was on track to brew about 25,000 barrels of beer for the year. Redner is partnering with a Chesterfield-based company, Brew Hub, to have some of its beer brewed at a Brew Hub owned facility in Lakeland, Fla. Cigar City Brewing's beers include Jai Alai India Pale Ale, Florida Cracker and Invasion.
St. Louis-based A-B, the U.S. headquarters for AB InBev, declined to comment about the Cigar City Brewing report. An A-B spokesman said the brewer doesn't comment or speculate on any mergers and acquisitions activity.
In recent months, A-B announced the acquisitions of 10 Barrel Brewing Co., a craft brewer based in Bend, Ore., and Seattle-based Elysian Brewing Co.

A relatively strong revenue growth reported by Guinness Nigeria Plc in its just-released 2015 half year results is fueling hope of a true turnaround at Nigeria’s second largest brewer, reports This Day Live.
Investment analysts believe Guinness Nigeria Plc’s half-year results indicate that the company is certainly coming out of the headwinds of declining growth which had unsettled long-term investors of the alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages manufacturer over the last few years.
Ironically, the cheering results which follow a tough 2014 financial year for the brewer with Head Office in Lagos, and three breweries in Lagos, Benin and Aba, were delivered under the watch of Mr. Seni Adetu, former MD/CEO of the brewing giant, prior to his redeployment.
The results affirm Adetu’s clearly articulated turnaround hopes last year which was premised on huge investments in capacity expansion, portfolio re-engineering and route-to-consumer step-change. Appointed in early 2012, he was redeployed in December 2014 in line with Diageo’s job rotation inclination which had seen Managing Directors of its Nigerian unit spend an average of three years on the job.

Australia: Consumer watchdog says brewing giants lock out genuine craft beer at local pubs
|
Consumer watchdog Choice says that foreign owned brewing giant, SABMiller (which owns the Fosters Group inclusive of Carlton & United Breweries) is locking out genuine craft beer at Australian pubs, Hospitality Magazine reported on February 11.
Choice’s head of media, Tom Godfrey, said that while pubs may appear to offer a wide selection of tap beers, the reality is that most of the taps in Australian pubs are controlled by one of two international brewing giants, SABMiller or Kirin, at the expense of genuine Australian craft brewers.
“It's not uncommon for the big brewers to offer more money, rebates or other incentives for exclusive access to 80 percent or even 100 percent of pub taps, making it hard for independent brewers to get a fair go,” said Godfrey.
“We know 83 percent of revenue in Australia flows to the big beer barons, Kirin and SABMiller. If exclusive dealing cuts competitors, forecloses markets and keeps competitors out, it may well be unlawful.”
Choice obtained a contract for the supply of tap beer that stipulates demands for exclusive access for the SABMiller-owned Foster’s Group.

USA: MillerCoors CEO to retire at the end of June
|
SABMiller PLC on February 10 said Tom Long, chief executive officer of MillerCoors, its US and Puerto Rican joint venture with Molson Coors Brewing Co, is set to retire at the end of June.
Long has been CEO of MillerCoors since 2011, having been president and chief commercial officer since the launch of the MillerCoors joint venture in 2008.
In a statement, SABMiller said that MillerCoors has already begun the search or a new CEO.
"The board will take the time necessary to conduct a thoughtful, disciplined and collaborative process aimed at selecting the best available talent to lead MillerCoors through its next phase of growth and development," said MillerCoors Deputy Chairman and SABMiller CEO, Alan Clark in the statement.
In a separate statement, SABMiller reported that MillerCoors' underlying net income grew 2.9% for the full year 2014, while fourth quarter underlying net income decreased 11.8% to USD213.3 million, which it said was mainly due to lower shipment volume, unrealised losses on commodity hedges and higher marketing investment.
"Fourth quarter sales to retailer volume continued to improve, with Miller Lite returning to growth. Increased profitability for the year was driven by positive pricing, sales mix and cost savings," the company said.

USA: AB InBev to begin distribution of new malt beverages next week
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV said on February 10 it will begin U.S. distribution of Bud Light Mixx Tail in three cocktail flavors next week. Next month, MillerCoors LLC will launch a third type of its ultra-popular Redd’s Apple Ale, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Fed up with losing share to liquor companies for five years straight, these brewers are trying to cash in on the popularity of cocktails.
Sales of the hybrid brews, which are made like beer but flavored to taste like a cocktail, are surging. The category’s share of the $100 billion U.S. beer market has doubled over the past five years to 4%, according to industry tracker Beer Marketer’s Insights.
The drinks carry more alcohol than beer and are designed to appeal to millennial drinkers, many of whom prefer sweeter alternatives to beer. MillerCoors Marketing Director of Innovations Anup Shah said the drinks, known in the industry as flavored malt beverages, give brewers a chance to steal share from wine and spirits.
“Younger consumers continue to want more flavor variety,” Mr. Shah said.
Public health advocates have raised concerns in recent years about cocktail-style brews, arguing they appeal to underage drinkers because they taste more like a sweet soda than a bitter beer.

Kenya: Carlsberg partners with investment company Centum to distribute its beer in Kenya
|
East African investment company Centum has entered Kenya’s beer market with the signing of a local distributorship contract with Danish brewer Carlsberg, the Business Daily reported on February 10.
The deal marks yet another milestone for the Nairobi Securities Exchange-listed investment company, which has lately announced multi-billion shilling projects in real estate and energy.
Centum says the distributorship of the premium beer, which is targets middle class consumers, is a strategy to diversify revenue streams and gulp a piece of the alcohol market dominated by the East African Breweries.
“We are targeting the premium beer market segment. There is space for growth given that Kenya’s per capita consumption of beer remains very low,” Centum chief executive James Mworia said.
Centum signed the deal with Carlsberg Group mid last year to exclusively sell its beer brands in Kenya. It has plans to set up a beer bottling plant by the end of this year, depending on sales volumes.
Centum said acquisition of the Carlsberg franchise is part of plans to solidify its presence in the fast-moving consumer goods category and exploit the rising demand for premium beer brands.

Brazil: Sao Paulo water shortage affecting Ambev’s operations

Brazil is taking all the measures to deal with the worst water crisis that it is facing in the most populous regions of the country. It is experiencing the most severe drought since 1930. The water problem is affecting operations at many companies, and Ambev SA, the nation’s largest beer maker, is no exception, Inside Trade reported on February 9.
Sao Paulo, one of the biggest cities in Brazil, is on the verge of diminishing water supplies within 45 days. The system from where it gets half of its drinking water will run dry if there is no rain in coming one month. The Cantareira water system supplies water to ten million people in Sao Paulo. As of now, water levels are less than a quarter of total capacity. The concerns are aggravating as once the water levels decline below 20%, the water utility will face severe problems in transferring water between reservoirs.

Rwanda: Bralirwa launches new stout to compensate for lost distribution of Guinness
|
Rwanda’s leading brewer, Bralirwa lost rights to produce and distribute Guinness after its contract with East African Breweries Ltd (EABL) expired in 2013, SPY Ghana reported on February 10.
Speaking during the launch of a new stout named Legend at the firm’s offices in Kicukiro on February 6, Jonathan Hall, the Bralirwa managing director, said they expect the new brand to compete favourably on the market, and improve their beer sales.
“We were sad that Guinness left our beer brands, but we promised (then) to replace it as we have done today,” Hall said of the beer that costs Rwf500.
Bralirwa, which is listed on the Rwanda Stock Exchange, produces such beer brands as Primus, Mutzig, and Turbo King.
The other local beer manufacturer, Unibra, the makers of Skol and Gatanu, currently controls about 14 per cent of the Rwandan market.
