Is later harvest always better? It depends...
ABSTRACT
The effect of date of harvest with Willamette and Cascade hops, already mentioned in the Newsletter march 2012, is now published in a comprehensive article. In summary, with a later harvest the hop oil content increases and the composition changes in regard to single components such as alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, myrcene, limonene, methyl heptanoate, and linalool. These changes of course also affect the sensory profile of the hop oil. Although trials with Hallertau Mittelfrueh had shown that later picked hops led to a consumer preference with regard to dry-hopped beers, this did not hold true for similar trials with Cascade hops. Like with everything in the world... it depends! Read more

USA, MN: Goat Ridge Brewing Company to be launched soon in New London, MN
|
Ever since he started his beer-making hobby in 1996 while living in the craft beer mecca of the Pacific Northwest, Josh Reed has been gaining knowledge and experience and honing about 20 of his best home-brew recipes that will be available for quaffing at his soon-to-be-opened brewhouse and tap room, Goat Ridge Brewing Company, The Prairies Business reported on February 6.
With the slogan of “beer from here,” Reed will use hops he grows on his family farm north of Games Lake — in an area he’s always known as Goat Ridge — to brew his locally produced craft beer in New London.
Reed, who in October quit his full-time day job as an administrator for a nonprofit organization, said he’s always been a do-it-from-scratch kind of guy.
Brewing beer from his homegrown hops and honey from a neighboring beekeeper will celebrate the “uniqueness of the prairie glacial hills area in our flavors and our stories and local characters and spirit of the independence of this area,” he said.
Located on the edge of the Middle Fork of the Crow River and a stone’s throw downstream from the scenic Mill Pond Dam, the brewhouse and tap room is located in an existing building at

USA, MI & TX & NC: Detroit’s Atwater Brewery to expand production to Texas and North Carolina
|
Detroit’s Atwater Brewery production, which grew dramatically in 2014, is set to reach even higher heights this year as the company becomes a national brand in craft brewing, Model Media reported on February 10.
The riverfront-based brewery sold in excess of 40,000 barrels of beer last year, raising its sales by 68 percent compared to 2013. It expects to hit 60,000 barrels of beer this year. Atwater Brewery is also in the process of opening up two more remote production facilities across the U.S.
"We would have done more if we had more capacity in 2014," says Mark Rieth, owner of Atwater Brewery.
Atwater Brewery was one of Michigan's early craft breweries, opening in 1997. Rieth took over the operation in 2005 and set the brewery on a strong growth track. It is now the biggest brewery in metro Detroit and the third-largest brewery in Michigan on the strength of the sales of its popular beers like Dirty Blonde Ale and Vanilla Java Porter. Atwater Brewery has also expanded its staff, making eight hires in marketing, sales and production over the last year. It now employs 38 people and plans to hire 20 more to keep up with its production goals.

USA, IL: Revolution Brewing to expand Avondale facility
|
Revolution Brewing has announced plans to expand production of its Avondale brewing facility, tripling production of its exclusive line of beers, DNA Info reported on February 10.
The brewery will get a new 120-barrel brewhouse this summer at 3340 N. Kedzie Ave. in Avondale — the brewhouse, along with several 800-barrel fermenters and other equipment, will boost the company’s capacity to 300,000 barrels annually, according to the Revolution crew.
“Chicagoans are enjoying a lot of Revolution brews, and this expansion project gives us the ability to keep that beer flowing for many years,” Revolution owner Josh Deth said in a statement. “Revolution is leading a renaissance of Chicago’s great brewing culture and industry that has been part of the city’s history since day one.”
The Logan Square-based restaurant and pub brewed just over 50,000 barrels in 2014 and is now expanding into the neighboring space at its Avondale facility.
An increase in cold storage space will help maintain the brews’ flavor by preserving freshness, according to the announcement. The expansion will also allow Revolution to add more variety to its lineup, including Fist City, a Chicago Pale Ale, which is slated to hit shelves in 12-ounce cans in April.
“Fist City is my beer of

Canada, ON: Announced almost a year ago Craft Heads Brewing to finally open its doors at the end of February
|
Food and drink website Windsor Eats reports that a brewery first announced almost a year ago is getting set to open later this month in the border city.
Craft Heads Brewing will be opening its doors on Friday February 27th at 89 University Ave. W. in downtown Windsor, and will initially be pouring beer from 9 of the 30 taps at the tasting bar, including “a Blonde, three different Porters, a Brown, an Imperial Coffee Stout, a Hefeweizen, a Two Headed IPA and a Cream Ale.”
In addition to beer from co-founders Steve Fabischek and Bryan Datoc, Craft Heads will also be offering gourmet coffee brewed by a third partner who recently joined the company.
Beer sales will initially be limited to glasses and samples for on-site consumption, but the partners hope to have a retail licence soon that will allow for take-home growler sales.

Canada: Canada’s distilling industry crippled by high markups at liquor outlets
|
Crippling markups at liquor outlets are stunting the growth of domestic distillers and efforts to expand global markets for Canadian-made spirits, Patrick O’Driscoll, CEO of Hiram Walker & Sons, was quoted as saying by The Windsor Star on February 6.
“The spirits industry in Canada has the lowest profitability of any market around the world,” O’Driscoll said. “So, to try and push it any lower could be a very dangerous situation for this industry.”
In Windsor to celebrate the launch of a new C$9-million bottling line at the historic distillery and bottling plant, O’Driscoll said such investments are uncommon in Canada because of the high burden of taxation.
“The net result of high markups means that companies like mine are operating on lower margins, making it difficult to invest in future business,” he said. “Opening up new markets for Canadian whisky is an expensive investment, and that’s one of the things that has held back the development of Canadian whisky globally.”
In Ontario, 77 cents of every retail dollar goes to federal and provincial coffers, leaving suppliers with a gross margin of 23 cents – substantially lower than that of beer and wine, said O’Driscoll.
The Liquor Control Board of Ontario is under pressure to

USA, WA: Poulsbo’s Sound Brewery embarks on expansion project
|
The most popular beer from Poulsbo’s Sound Brewery is a strong Belgian-style ale called Monk’s Indiscretion. With a 10 percent ABV (alcohol by volume), it’s big and bold, rather like the expansion the brewery is undertaking, The Kitsap Sun reported on February 6.
Owner and founder Mark Hood and his partners are assembling an entire new brewery in a former truck repair building on Viking Avenue, just across the street from the small business park where Sound Brewery’s production facility and taproom have been for four years.
The new facility that will give Sound the capacity to produce 10 times as much beer will utilize a mash-filtration brewing system that’s not typically found at small-scale craft breweries.
“We’re the first ones in Washington state to use this,” Hood said during an interview at Sound’s taproom. “It’s a fairly old technique for giant breweries, but it’s brand new, like two years old for small breweries.
“It’s a completely different way to brew beer.”
The closest brewery using a mash filter is Full Sail, one of the Northwest’s foundational craft breweries founded in 1987 in Hood River, Ore. Named Craft Brewer of the Year by Beverage World Magazine in 2014, employee-owned Full Sail produces about 120,000 barrels

USA, WY: Wyoming microbreweries to be able to produce more beer under new legislation
|
Wyoming microbreweries would be able to produce more beer under legislation endorsed by a Senate panel, localnews8.com reported on February 12.
The Senate Revenue Committee unanimously recommended House Bill 82 on February 12, sending it to the full Senate for debate.
The legislation proposed by Republican Rep. Ruth Ann Petroff, of Jackson, would increase the maximum amount of malt beverages that a microbrewery can produce from 15,000 barrels a year to 50,000 barrels.
If a microbrewery surpasses the annual barrel production limit, it would be considered a brewery under state law.
Petroff explains that microbreweries enjoy certain advantages over a large brewer under state law.
For instance, microbreweries can sell their product on site and distribute their product on their own.
Mike Moser, of the Wyoming Liquor Association, says the microbrewery industry in Wyoming is growing.

USA, MA: New brewery to open in Woburn, MA
|
Daniel Lanigan, owner of the Cambrigde, MA, beer bar Lord Hobo, is opening his own 47,000-square-foot brewery in Woburn, MA, according to Boston Magazine.
However, the upcoming Lord Hobo Brewing Company won’t be your typical brewery. The article mentions that Lanigan intends to produce 10,000 barrels of beer annually – which is huge, considering the fact that newer breweries are only able to produce a quarter of that amount, as noted by Eater Boston.
On top of having a large “40-barrel brewhouse,” Lord Hobo Brewing Co. plans to have retail space and a “4,000 square foot taproom that will be able to accommodate 400 visitors,” reports Boston Magazine. The article also notes that the taproom will have 15 draft lines.
In addition to Lanigan, Vince Tursi (Night Shift Brewing), David Kushner (former cellarman at Harpoon), and Michael Labbe (formerly of Aeronaut Brewing Co.) are all behind the new Woburn craft beer venture.
The team's “Hop-forward brewery” (as Lanigan describes it) will debut soon. And by late 2015, Lord Hobo Brewing Co. plans to “release as many as 10 canned offerings, several of those being India Pale Ales, including its signature product, Boom Sauce," reports the article.
The Lord Hobo Brewing Company will be located at

India: Hoegaarden back in India’s market thanks to complying with food regulator’s labelling norms
|
Months after many imported beers, including Hoegaarden, disappeared from shops because of stricter enforcement of labelling rules, the Belgian beer is back in the market after the company’s local partner complied with the Indian food regulator’s norms, Livemint reported on February 12.
Gurgaon-based RJ Corp. (Ravi Jaipuria), the local partner of Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, adhered to Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s (FSSAI’s) norms that require importers to clearly state all ingredients of a beverage to be printed on the bottle label.
“We have adapted labels where it was needed,” said Chris White, president and group chief executive officer of Gurgaon-based RJ Corp. “Our company always complies with local laws.”
“We will be bringing in greater quantities in 2015 to satisfy demand,” added White.
AB InBev also sells brands such as Budweiser—locally bottled in India, apart from importing beers such as Leffe, Hoegaarden and Stella Artois into the country.
Trouble for food and beverage importers started in 2014 after FSSAI tightened labelling norms on products.
According to the new norms, companies must list on the label all the ingredients used in the product in the form of imprints and not stickers. As a result of the new guideline, many
