Ivanhoe, Gargoyle and Mackinaw; what are these?
ABSTRACT
Tough they sound like a gang of three guys, these are three different hop varieties! And they grow in locations you would never think: Califorina and Michigan! Roughly 400 ha of hops are grown OUTSIDE of Washington, Oregon and Idaho (where about 16000 ha of hops grow). Growing hops is absolutely in vogue, but in regards to quality standards still a far way to go for many new hop growers. Following the top three states, the biggest growing areas are Michigan (147ha), New York (100ha), Wisconsin (49ha), Colorado (30ha) and California (26ha). I am sure these new growing areas will also bring us new hop flavours! Read more

USA, OR: Full Sail Brewing to add sales staff after closing acquisition by investment group led by Encore Consumer Capital
|
Full Sail Brewing will add sales staff quickly after closing the acquisition by an investment group led by San Francisco-based Encore Consumer Capital, but few other changes will be apparent, the company's chief executive was quoted as saying by Oregon Live on March 10.
The company's goal is for a "very seamless" change of control, said Irene Firmat, the company's chief executive and cofounder. "We hope it won't feel like a transition."
Encore Consumer Capital paid "a premium price" for Full Sail, which has been owned by its employees through a stock ownership plan, she said. And while the deal cashes out Full Sail's 78 employee-shareholders, none are leaving the company, she said.
About 98 percent of the company's employees voted in favor of the deal, Firmat said. The vote was first reported by the New School Beer blog.
"In the short term, it will be business as usual at Full Sail," Scott Sellers, Encore Consumer's managing director, in an email. "Over time, we are looking to grow the company and there will be additions to the team. Sales and marketing will be the area where the most resources will be added."
Firmat said the increasingly competitive brewing marketplace, marked by continuing new entrants and

USA, ID: Idaho’s barley industry remains healthy despite losses
|
Idaho’s barley industry has weathered the heavy 2014 losses caused by monsoon-like August rains with the help of its biggest customers and is looking to the future, not the past, Idaho Barley Commission Administrator Kelly Olson told Idaho lawmakers.
Idaho’s barley industry remains healthy, despite the losses, which are estimated at $60 million to $70 million, Olson told members of the House and Senate agricultural committees last week.
The monsoonal rains in parts of Southern and Eastern Idaho that are largely deserts started Aug. 4 and didn’t finish for about five weeks, she said.
As a result, harvested barley acreage in Idaho was down 18 percent to 510,000 acres last year and production was down 17 percent to 47.94 million bushels.
But Idaho still led the nation in barley production.
“Despite all the headlines ... we remained on top of the industry in this country for the third straight year,” she said. “Despite those difficulties, Idaho still produced 27 percent of the U.S. barley crop.”
Olson said the industry’s major customers used as much of the damaged crop as possible, given their quality parameters, which helped limit the damage.
Ninety-two percent of the state’s malt barley crop was in the path of those August storms and the

USA, AZ: New bill to allow Arizona’s craft breweries to produce more beer and maintain their restaurants and bars
|
Arizona's craft breweries have compromised on a bill that will allow them to produce more beer than currently allowed in the state while maintaining their restaurants and bars, AZcentral.com reported on March 10.
The Arizona Craft Brewers Guild is pushing for a change in state law this year that would clarify that the nearly 60 microbreweries could maintain restaurants and bars after exceeding a certain amount of production. Senate Bill 1030 was held up last month in a committee when the bill's opponents raised questions about its legality.
The Guild then compromised on an amendment, which passed its first test on March 9 while advancing unanimously through the Senate committee where it had been held up. The bill's sponsor is Sen. Kelli Ward, R-Lake Havasu City.
The new bill language will allow microbreweries to produce as much as 200,000 barrels of beer annually among multiple locations. The cap is 40,000 barrels today. A barrel is 31 gallons, or two full-size kegs.
"This is exactly what we asked for," said Rob Fullmer, executive director of the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild.
Breweries need to know there is a path for them to continue growing if they are to continue investing in Arizona, he said.
Under the current law,

USA, VA: Spencer Devon Brewing nearing the finish line for April 1 opening
|
Spencer Devon Brewing’s owners are finally nearing the finish line in what has become a marathon effort to get the brewery and restaurant open, Fredericksburg.com reported on March 10.
Co-owner Shawn Phillips is hoping to be open by April 1—the anniversary of his retirement from the Marine Corps.
The 5,827-square-foot space at 106 George St. in Fredericksburg is starting to take shape. The brewing room is all set up, and Rappahannock River Water Brown, Rocko's Milk Stout and Olde Towne Ale are all ready for drinking.
Spencer Devon has more beers in the pipeline. There’s a pilsner that isn’t quite ready yet, and a dry-hopped IPA and a West Coast-inspired American Pale Ale that will be ready closer to the restaurant’s opening date to preserve their freshness.
With the brewing side ready to go, Spencer Devon’s restaurant is coming along. Much of the construction is already done.
Phillips is in the process of getting the remaining necessary permits, which will determine his exact opening date.
Last year, he hired a brewer and assistant brewer, as well as chef Justin Cunningham, who used to own Fizzlebottom's Café.
Now he’s ready to hire the rest of the staff for the brewery’s opening. He’s looking for five to eight people

USA, IN: 18th Street Brewery to more than double its output
|
There are worse problems than expanding your business 1,100 square feet, only to find that you're already at capacity again, if you ask Drew Fox of 18th Street Brewery, Chicago Tribune reported on March 6.
The founder and master brewer of 18th Street Brewery Gary, Idiana's Miller section is only 15 months into brewing his award-winning beers at its 5725 Miller Ave. location, and he's already reached "Phase 4" of his business plan. Fox purchased the building directly behind the brewery – a vault that used to house cleaned furs behind the old cleaners the brewery/brew pub now occupies - and has installed five-15 barrel fermenters that will, when hooked up, more than double the brewery's output to more than 1,000 barrels from 500 a year, he said.
Anyone else might say 18th Street is expanding at a break-neck pace, but to Fox, things are still "nice and slow." And staying in Gary is helping him keep a steady hand on his growth. When expansion talk first materialized at the end of last year, Fox looked to expand the brewery operations to Hammond while keeping the pub in Gary.
"Hammond was ready to have us – they knew all about us and were

USA, NY: Four Mile Brewing close to opening in Olean
|
Piece by piece, the return of commercial brewing in Olean is coming together. And soon enough, Four Mile Brewing will craft locally produced beer, Olean Times Herald reported on March 8.
Four Mile Brewing, a joint venture among Gregg Piechota, Jaye Beattie and Nicholas Bohdanowycz, is on track to open this spring.
“This project has been more than I imagined and a lot of work; there’s been a lot of late nights and early mornings,” said Piechota, who will serve as Four Mile’s head brewer. “I’m anxious to start brewing.”
Since purchasing the building in January 2014, the Four Mile trio have spent around $1 million to overhaul the property and outfit it with the all the equipment needed to brew and serve craft suds. Part of Four Mile’s expenses are being offset by a $90,000 state grant and various local tax breaks.
For most of last year, Piechota and his partners worked alongside a crew to renovate the building, smashing century-old plaster off its walls and tearing down drop ceiling. They also cleared out remnants left by its last occupants, which include a lumber company and a kitchen and bath store.
At the end of November, three 30-barrel beer tanks were delivered to the

USA, VA: Owners of Maltese Brewing Co. hoping for soft opening next month
|
The owners of Maltese Brewing Co. have come a long way since announcing their plans to open their firefighter-themed brewery in Spotsylvania County earlier this year, Fredericksburg.com reported on March 8.
The 1,400-square-foot space, in the Fredericksburg Business Park, off State Route 2, is actually starting to look like a brewery.
Though small, it will have enough room for the brewing equipment, as well as tasting areas with tables, chairs and a bar.
Bobby Cook and Joe Smith, Prince William County firefighters who own Maltese, hope to be able to have a soft opening in mid-April.
They launched an online fundraising campaign through Kickstarter.com for $10,000 and have reached their goal. The money they raised is being used to buy brewing equipment. Much of it is already in place and came from Blue & Gray Brewing Co.
The cold room is done, which is where the kegs sit when they are connected to the taps behind the bar.
Cook and Smith are handy and built everything themselves or with the help of friends. Their plan is to finish up construction soon and start brewing this month for their mid-April opening.
The next step is to get their ABC license, which will allow them to brew.

USA, MT: Kalispell Brewing Co. has to expand after just nine months of operation
|
In just nine months of operation, Kalispell Brewing Co. proved that the Flathead Valley was thirsty for its beers, The Daily Inter Lake reported on March 7.
To keep up with increasing demand, the brewery will expand its fermenting capacity from 40 barrels to 100, adding four new fermenters.
“Honestly, the response we’ve received since our opening is far more than we ever anticipated or predicted,” said Maggie Doherty, “Beer Ambassador” for the brewery. “We’ve almost run out of beer, which is a great problem to have.”
The brewery opened last June with four 10-barrel fermenters and is adding two 10-barrel and two 20-barrel fermenters. The addition will increase the existing volume by 150 percent.
The brewery purchased the additional fermenters, along with a fifth piece of equipment, in January, and is now working to set up plumbing and electrical connections for the system. The expansion is slated for completion in the beginning of April.
Doherty estimates the completed project will cost around $120,000.
“Part of the reason we chose the building we did— besides being downtown and in a cool location— was the 9,000-square-foot floor space,” Doherty said. “We wanted some place that could house our eventual expansion.”
The brewery has been best known for its

USA, WA: Postdoc Brewing Company operational in Redmond since end of February
|
Nine beers a-flowing and a load of smiles and congratulatory pats on the back.
That was the scene at the Feb. 27 grand-opening gathering for the Postdoc Brewing Company in Redmond, which featured a large crowd spilling into the brewery and tap room and Mayor John Marchione cracking a cask, Redmond Reporter communicated on March 6.
Four Union Hill neighbors — Tom Schmidlin and his wife Julie Lindemann, along with Jonny Chambers and his wife Debbie Chambers — opened their 4,000-square-foot space (3,000 for the brewery and 1,000 for the tap room) in December 2014 and things have been running smoothly the whole way.
“I’ve been dreaming about having a brewery for over 20 years,” said Schmidlin, a homebrewer for two decades. “It feels great. We’ve put a lot of hard work into it and we’re realizing the fruits of our labors. I work way harder now than I ever did at any other job, but I enjoy it a lot more, so it’s definitely worth it.”
Added Jonny Chambers, who hails from Portadown in Northern Ireland: “After many nights, after a few beers, we decided that we’d be dead someday and may as well just do it.”

USA, OR: Coin Toss Brewing to join Oregon City’s craft beer scene soon
|
Oregon City’s beer scene is expanding again with Coin Toss Brewing Co. slated to open in early June at 14210 Fir St, Suite H (off Beavercreek Rd., just west of Highway 213). Coin Toss joins the newish Oregon City Brewing, Arch Bridge Taphouse and the upcoming Bent Shovel Brewing. Coin Toss is the vision of local radio personality Tim Hohl, who, like so many pioneering craft brewers before him, is taking his passion for homebrewing to the next level, The Daily Meal reported on March 10.
The 1,400 sq. ft. facility will house a brand new 10-barrel brewhouse, including four 10-barrel fermenters, all fabricated by Practical Fusion, stainless steel tank fabrication experts based in Portland. The brewery will eventually include a taproom, slated to open in July, that will serve the brewery’s flagship Black Hole CDA (Hohl’s most popular homebrew), as well as an IPA, a Golden Ale and a Stout.
Perhaps most interesting will be Coin Toss’ rotating “Heritage Series” that will feature a regular selection of beers brewed using historical recipes. Hohl recently brewed a small beer based on a recipe found in a journal entry belonging to George Washington, using ingredients that closely resembled those of America’s founding

USA, IN: Avon’s Cutters Brewing Company announces immediate and unexpected cease of operations
|
Cutters Brewing Company announced online on March 10 that it would cease operations immediately after four years in business, WISH-TV reported.
A 24-Hour News 8 reporter stopped by the Avon-based brewery to learn more about the closure, but an employee there respectfully declined to comment. However, a posting on the brewery’s Facebook and Twitter accounts reads in part:
“It’s with tremendous regret that we must announce that all brewing operations will cease immediately.”
The statement, which garnered several comments from Facebook well wishers and more than 100 shares, goes on to blame part of the closure on a dispute with the local sewage company.
“Launching a small business demands certain sacrifices. We knew that competing in the exploding craft beer business would not be easy. It not only takes sellable products but a tightrope of location, distribution, marketing and operations must be walked,” the posting reads.
“We knew we would make our share of missteps and hoped that none of those miscues would be fatal. However, ultimately, it was our inability to come to a reasonable resolution with the sewage (company), whom we believe was simply extorting us for exorbitant sums, that precipitated the decision to close.”
Calls to the local sewage utility in Avon weren’t

USA, IL & MI: Haymarket Brewing Company to build new brewery in Bridgman, Michigan

Big news from West Loop, Chicago-based Haymarket Brewing Company, which owns and operates Haymarket Pub and Brewery, Chicago Now reported on March 9.
According to a post published on March 9 on Haymarket's blog, the company has purchased property in Bridgman, Mich. for a full-scale production brewery, slated to open in the spring of 2016. Construction is set to begin immediately on the 17-acre site. In addition to the brewery, according to the blog post, the facility will also have a "taproom and kitchen serving wood-fired pizzas and house-made sausages," an outdoor beer garden and space to host outdoor events.

USA, KY: Darkness Brewing planned to open in Bellevue by September
|
Two friends and home brewers are working to open a brewery with an emphasis on dark beers on Bellevue's Fairfield Avenue, Cincinnati.com reported on March 10.
Eric Bosler and Ron Sanders are the owners of Darkness Brewing, which they hope to open by September at 224 Fairfield Ave.
Bosler's father was in the Air Force, so the family moved around during his youth and finally settled in Denver. Though he has lived in Bellevue for 10 or 15 years, he misses the beer scene he experienced in Colorado.
"You go there and you can't throw a rock without hitting a brewery," he said. "I'm trying to bring what I remember from Denver back this way."
Admittedly, others have beat him to it: a half-dozen new breweries opened locally in 2013 and 2014, and at least a dozen are expected to open this year.
But Bosler — a veteran of local bars and restaurants such as Crazy Fox Saloon, Buckhead Mountain Grill and Virgil's Cafe — likes the idea of the neighborhood brewery, serving patrons who live close.
"We like the idea of people walking to us instead of driving," he said. He particularly wanted to open the business in his own neighborhood.
"We're right on the cusp

Africa: SABMiller targeting Africa’s undeveloped spirits market
|
SABMiller has built spirits manufacturing facilities in South Sudan, Ethiopia and Nigeria over the past year, adding to its successful Tanzanian and its small Mozambican spirits units, Business Day Live reported on March 10.
The world’s second-biggest beer brewer is targeting Africa’s underdeveloped spirits market in an effort to "legitimise" the industry and ultimately to benefit its beer sales, the company’s Africa MD Mark Bowman said on March 9. He said shifting spirits from the illicit to the formal market put the alcohol on a more level playing field with beer.
"If everyone’s paying their share of excise, pricing will start to normalise at appropriate levels for all alcohols," he said, citing a quadrupling of excises on SABMiller’s Mozambican business immediately after it was acquired. He also said, "If we can get a number one or two position in what we call mainstream spirits, then we think we can make a fair amount of money".
SABMiller plans to compete in spirits against cheap, illicit alcohol rather than with more expensive international brands, which are also targeting growth in Africa. Apart from SA, Africa generally had no major "mainstream" spirits suppliers and the industry was "completely fragmented", Mr Bowman said.

Delta Beverages has said its low-cost, mass market sorghum beer – Chibuku Super - is key to the growth of the group’s revenue as it turns to markets previously dominated by informal players in the face of slowing clear beer volumes, New Zimbabwe reported on March 9.
SABMiller, the leading multinational brewing and beverage company which owns 40 percent of Delta, said Chibuku Super and Impala (Mozambique’s commercial cassava beer) were key to the group’s efforts to tap into the informal alcohol market which had dwarfed formal alcohol business in Africa.
“By developing new affordable brands, such as Chibuku Super and Impala (the world’s first commercial cassava beer in Mozambique), and maintaining moderate pricing regimes on our beer brands, SABMiller expects to win share from the informal alcohol market and achieve significant long-term volume growth in Africa,” said Mark Bowman, managing director SABMiller Africa in an update of the group’s operations in Africa last week.
Sorghum products have been Delta’s best performing line in the past two years when demand for other beverage types started weakening, but volumes dropped by one percent in the third quarter to December 2014 due to constrained brewing capacity and utility outages.

Japan: Suntory Holdings files suit against Asahi to suspend sales and production of non-alcoholic beer-flavored drinks
|
Suntory Holdings Ltd. said on March 10 it has filed a lawsuit against rival Asahi Breweries Ltd. to suspend sales and production of nonalcoholic beer-flavored drinks, claiming Asahi infringed on a Suntory patent, The Japan Times reported.
Asahi, which insisted Suntory’s patent was invalid, said it would fight the claim, which was lodged in the Tokyo District Court in January.
The first hearing of the trial was scheduled to open later on March 10.
Demand for nonalcoholic beer-flavored drinks has been expanding in recent years as beer sales shrink, with an increasing number of people abstaining from drinking alcohol for health and other reasons.
Suntory holds the top share of the domestic market for nonalcoholic beer-flavored drinks, with sales of its alcohol, calorie and carbohydrate-free, beer-flavored beverage called All-Free totaling 7.2 million cases in 2014.
Asahi had the second-largest share of the domestic market over the same period, with 6.3 million cases of Asahi Dry Zero sold.
One case holds 20 633-milliliter bottles.

Jamaica: Red Stripe one step closer to introducing cassava into its beers
|
Jamaica’s Red Stripe brewery is one step closer to introducing cassava into its brew, now that it has broken ground for the construction of its 20-root-tonne cassava starch processing plant, Jamaica Observer reported on March 10.
The company has pumped US$800,000 (J$92 million) into the facility, which will allow Red Stripe to begin production of its flagship beer with at least five per cent cassava by the end of the year. Over time, Red Stripe hopes to have up to 40 per cent of locally grown cassava replacing the imported barley that is used in the production of beer.
The brewing company has also secured a lease contract for an additional 250 acres of land at Wallen, St Catherine, bringing its total cassava farmland under production to 286 acres.
“We are in the first phase so the 14.2 hectares that we have planted along with the 20-root-tonne factory that is being installed as we speak, we would have spent for this first pilot about US$1.6 million,” Red Stripe’s Managing Director Cedric Blair stated at the lease-signing agreement with the Agro-Invest Corporation on March 10.

Australia: Two new barley varieties accredited for malting
|
La Trobe and Flinders, two new barley varieties from the InterGrain and Syngenta collaboration, have been announced as malt accredited in Australia, Farm Weekly reported on March 11.
La Trobe has been accredited by Barley Australia following evaluation and testing conducted in association with the Malting and Brewing Industry Barley Technical Committee.
La Trobe produces high yields in low to medium rainfall areas while Flinders is well suited to the medium to high rainfall zones of WA.
From a quality standpoint, both La Trobe and Flinders have malting characteristics that are well suited to export brewing industries.
Syngenta head of cereals Australasia Craig Thompson said the announcement is a win for WA growers.
"La Trobe is a malting alternative to Hindmarsh that produces high yields in a broad range of environments, and growers will be well placed to receive malting premiums in coming seasons now that the variety has received accreditation," Mr Thompson said.
"Flinders poses as an appealing option for WA growers as an alternative to Baudin, Bass, Gairdner, Granger and Vlamingh and its premium malt qualities make it an attractive variety for Asian brewing industries."
The initial breeding of La Trobe commenced in 2006 and was conducted by the Biosciences Research Division of the Victorian
