Ivanhoe, Gargoyle and Mackinaw; what are these?
ABSTRACT
Tough they sound like a gang of three guys, these are three different hop varieties! And they grow in locations you would never think: Califorina and Michigan! Roughly 400 ha of hops are grown OUTSIDE of Washington, Oregon and Idaho (where about 16000 ha of hops grow). Growing hops is absolutely in vogue, but in regards to quality standards still a far way to go for many new hop growers. Following the top three states, the biggest growing areas are Michigan (147ha), New York (100ha), Wisconsin (49ha), Colorado (30ha) and California (26ha). I am sure these new growing areas will also bring us new hop flavours! Read more

USA, TX: Lakewood Brewing Co. completes expansion of its brewery in Garland
|
Lakewood Brewing Co. LLC has completed its expansion to its Garland-based brewery, which more than doubles the brew-making business' footprint, Dallas Business Journal reported on March 11.
The expansion gives Lakewood the ability to double its production capacity and represents the next big step in growing the local brewery, said Wim Bens, founder and president of Lakewood Brewing.
"Everything we've worked for since we sold our first keg in 2012 has been leading to this moment," said Bens, in a written statement. "Our goal has always been to provide DFW with the highest quality beers for any occasion, and this expansion allows us to keep that promise."
Last year, Lakewood Brewing bought the building next to its Dallas facility at 2302 Executive Drive, bulldozed it and built a new 14,000-square-foot building adjacent to its original 11,000-square-foot brewery.
The expansion gives way to 8,000 square feet of new product space and a larger, 2,000-square-foot taproom and new canning line. In April, the new canning line will prep Lakewood Lager, Rock Ryder and a new session IPA, Hopochondria for distribution.
Lakewood also entered into a third-party distribution agreement with Andrews, which will bring Lakewood to the masses and help the three-year-old company continue its growth spurt.

USA, MN & WI: Surly Brewing Co. to start selling its beers in Wisconsin
|
Surly Brewing Co., a Minneapolis-based brewer turning out 100,000 barrels per year, has signed a deal to start selling its Furious, Cynicale, Coffee Bender and other brews in Wisconsin, Milwaukee Business Journal reported on March 11.
The brewer told the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal that it has a deal with a Wisconsin-based distributor, though spokesperson Lee Jones said he could not provide more details.
Beer Advocate Magazine named Surly the best brewery in America in 2007, and the operation that started in 2005 expanded into a new brewery, with a restaurant and inviting yard in 2013. Surly employs about 150.
Surly will face stiff competition in Wisconsin, which has a long and rich history of brewing.
Wisconsin was the birthplace of some of the country's largest beer companies: Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co., Pabst Brewing Co. and Miller Brewing Co. The state also has a robust craft beer scene, with more than 100 establishments in operation, according to the Wisconsin Brewer's Guild.

USA: Barley breeders re-evaluating breeding lines to meet craft brewers’ demand
|
US barley breeders are re-evaluating breeding lines big breweries have rejected in the past and advancing specialized lines to meet the growing demand for craft beer, Capital Press reported on March 12.
The US malt barley varieties just weren’t bred with small craft breweries like New Glarus in mind.
Like most craft brewers, Dan Carey, brewmaster at the microbrewery near Madison, Wisconsin, uses only malted barley, also known as malt, as a carbohydrate source for his recipes.
But the vast majority of the malt available was developed to meet the specifications of the mass-production brewing giants that dominate the domestic beer market. Their beers, mainly Pilsner lagers, typically involve adding carbohydrates from rice or corn to supplement the malt — a practice known as adjunct brewing. Because most U.S. malts were developed to be mixed with those non-barley starches, their characteristics pose challenges for craft brewers, who use only malted barley in their all-grain process.
For example, a slightly higher protein level in the malt aids in the fermentation of the mass-produced adjunct beers, but in malt-only brewing the extra protein can make fermentation too vigorous and hurt the taste. In addition to lower-protein malts, craft brewers also prefer malts that lend a richer

Canada, BC: British Columbia’s brewing industry joined by Old Abbey Ales in Abbotsford
|
The spate of new brewery openings in British Columbia continues to show no signs of slowing down, with another new entrant into the market now in operation in Abbotsford, Canadian Beer News reported on March 12.
Old Abbey Ales was founded by brewing equipment importer and marketer Don Piccolo in partnership with NorthAm Finance, with veteran brewmaster Tony Dewald on staff to handle the development and production of the brewery’s beers.
Open to the public since late last week, Old Abbey is currently offering a selection of beers on tap and in growlers including Blonde Ale, IPA, Rye Pale Ale, Belgian Dark Strong and Belgian Single. The launch of the brewery’s core line-up of bottle-conditioned Belgian-style ales – including Belgian Tripel, Belgian Quad and Belgian IPA – will be following soon.

USA, MA: Battle Road Brewing Co. to expand production tenfold owing to new brewery in Maynard
|
Craft brewer Battle Road Brewing Co. is partnering with restaurant group Whole House Group to open a brewery and brew pub in Maynard, a facility that will allow the contract brewer to expand production tenfold, Boston Business Journal reported on March 12.
Jeremy Cross and Scott Houghton started the brewery in 2012 and have since created four brews: the flagship 1775 Tavern Ale, Barrett's Farmhouse Ale, Lexington Green East IPA and Midnight Rider Porter.
Cross and Houghton run the contract brewing business out of the Ipswich Ale Brewery and last year brewed 500 barrels. The new Maynard brewery and brew pub will include a 30-barrel brewing system, which will allow Battle Road to expand its production to 5,000 barrels per year.
The facility is set to open this fall, with the brew pub employing between 30 and 40 and the brewery employing up to 10 workers.
The brewery and brew pub will be located in a 12,000-square-foot former office space in Maynard's historic Clock Tower Mill, for which Battle Road has signed a 10-year lease and has another 10-year option. The property will include seating for between 50 and 75 patrons as well as a traditional outdoor beer garden overlooking Mill Pond.

USA, TN: Yee-Haw Brewing Company plans to open in Johnson City this summer
|
A brewing company announced plans on March 13 to open a new brewery in the Tweetsie Depot in downtown Johnson City, WJHL reports.
The Buffalo Street location will serve as the Yee-Haw Brewing Company's flagship location.
Founding partner Joe Baker, who also co-founded Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine, originally planned to turn the old Clinchfield train depot across the street into a brewery.
This new brewery will have a tap room, a place the company describes as somewhere the community can hang out and have a good time.
Baker hopes the depot's revitalization will significantly impact the downtown area.
"There's a lot of good things happening in downtown Johnson City,” Baker said. “This is just a piece of that. We certainly hope that this is a catalyst for more and more things to happen down here."
Yee-Haw Brewing Company plans to open for business early summer of this year.

UK: Third cut to beer duty to enable continued growth in beer production - SIBA
|
A third cut to beer duty will enable the continued growth in beer production, fuel sales growth, encourage investment and boost employment, the Society of Independent Brewers Association (SIBA) has argued.
Ahead of next week’s budget SIBA has released preliminary figures from its survey British Beer 2015 released next week that shows production by SIBA members grew by c.15.8% in 2014 to 2.99 million hectolitres or 526 million pints. In 2013 the increase was 9.4%, which together results in a 25% uplift in sales since the Beer Duty Escalator was abolished in March 2013.
Before the duty cuts production only grew by 5.7% in 2011-2012.
SIBA managing director Mike Benner said: “The results of the survey clearly demonstrate how the two consecutive cuts in beer duty and end of the Beer Duty Escalator have had a positive impact on independent British brewing and have boosted confidence. Our members have invested the duty savings in their businesses, buying new brewing equipment, increasing production and recruiting new staff.
“By announcing a third cut in beer duty in next week’s Budget, the Government can ensure that the momentum of the previous cuts is maintained and the independent brewing sector, now recovering and starting to thrive after

UK: British malting barley growers could become world market leaders if they embrace new technology and meet ever more stringent specifications
|
British malting barley growers could become world market leaders in what is an increasingly niche global market, Farmers Weekly reported on March 13.
However, they must embrace new technology and strive to meet ever more stringent specifications, a leading West Country maltster warned.
Over the past year global barley production has fallen by 5%, as maize becomes ever more popular.
Yet in the EU and UK barley still holds a significant part of the market, said Brenda Mullen, market analyst at the HGCA.
“The EU is the powerhouse of barley production – it is becoming the go-to region for barley exports,” she added.
In the UK, barley production in 2014-15 is estimated at close to 7 mln tonnes for the second year running – and the 2015-16 crop could be even larger, said HGCA analyst Helen Plant.
“This year we have a potential 2 mln tonne barley surplus to export. With the strength of the pound against the euro, exporting to the EU has been difficult,” she added.
“But the weak pound against the dollar means we’re able to sell on to the global market. By the end of December we had shipped nearly 40% of the surplus,” Miss Plant said.
Advantages of growing barley include better blackgrass

Africa: Beer industry keeping farmers busy growing local ingredients
|
Ugandan farmer Ephraim Opusi had managed to make ends meet growing corn on his 5-acre plot in the hilly Kumi district in eastern Uganda. But now that he cultivates white sorghum, a grain used in beer brewing, Mr. Opusi has struggled to feed his six children, The Wall Street Journal reported on March 12.
“It has been a bad season,” says the 52-year old farmer, who is under contract with beer maker SABMiller PLC.
During his first season in 2010, Mr. Opusi harvested three tons of sorghum. It earned him $750, one of his best seasons. An average Ugandan makes $510 a year, according to World Bank data.
Encouraged by the earnings, Mr. Opusi ditched other profitable crops to concentrate growing sorghum. But he didn’t count on many other farmers doing the same, leading to a 20% increase in the price of corn and beans in his district.
Brewing giants such as SABMiller and Diageo PLC have invested millions of dollars into African farms, providing a guaranteed market—and better returns—to smallholder farmers as they look for more locally sourced materials such as sorghum. Food staples cassava and yams are also being supplied to brewers.
Under agreements with multinational brewers, farmers grow beer-making ingredients in

Romania: Heineken loses suit against small Romanian brewer
|
A small beer manufacturer in Romania has won a lawsuit against Heineken, which sued it for using a brand name it says it is too similar to a local brew it produces, AP reported on March 12.
The court in the city of Suceava on March 11 struck down Heineken's lawsuit for infringement of property rights and unfair business practices. The ruling of March 12 is final.
The Dutch multinational company has since 2003 produced "Ciuc Premium" in a Romanian region dominated by ethnic Hungarians and with a long history of brewing.
In November, Lixid Product began manufacturing a craft beer in the same region with a label calling it the "real beer" from the region. Heineken sued.
Gabor Hajdu, a company representative, praised the ruling. "Our beer is different, the label is different and so is the taste."

India: Indians embracing craft and imported beer culture
|
Not too long ago, the ordinary Indian tippler typically only had a handful of options for a refreshing, cold pint: Kingfisher, Haywards or Kalyani, Quartz India reported on March 13.
And even as these stalwarts of India’s booze scene remain firmly in place, young and affluent beer drinkers in the country are turning to newer, more exotic brews—and opening up a whole new marketplace.
Consider, for instance, microbreweries, establishments that usually brew limited amounts of beer for consumption within their own outlets. From just two in 2008, Gregory Kroitzsh of Mumbai’s Barking Deer brewpub reckons, there are now some 45 of them across the country. And most are centered around just three cities: Bangalore (18), Gurgaon (13) and Pune (6).
Microbreweries, however, aren’t the only one challenging domestic beer manufacturers. Between 2008 and 2011, more than 20 international beer companies have launched in India, each trying to convince India’s massive population of young people to try their brew.
“India is like how the US was 30 years ago when there were about 100 breweries only selling homogenous macro-brewed pilsner lager,” Kroitzsh said. “Indians drink only about two litres of beer per capita per year, which is well below the international average. However, the middle
