Never underestimate the roots

ABSTRACT
Our roots tell us who we are, why should it be different for hops? But actually what do we know about the roots of hops, the hidden half of the plant? These German researchers investigated the root development of different hop plants for a five year period producing a lot of valuable results. The root system of hop can be subdivided into three parts: A row section with adventitious roots, a disk surrounding the rootstock with horizontally growing roots and a block of vertical roots developing downwards. Both the horizontal and the vertical part are interspersed by two types of roots (perennial and fresh ones). The total amount of the rooted soil volume is about four cubic meters, which indicates a large potential capacity for available water. These findings may contribute to optimised hop cultivation with regard to irrigation, fertilisation and tillage.

Brewery news USA: Craft brewers celebrate another successful year reaching double-digit share of the market
The Brewers Association (BA), the trade association representing small and independent American craft brewers, on March 16 released 2014 data on U.S. craft brewing growth. For the first-time ever, craft brewers reached double-digit (11 percent) volume share of the marketplace.

In 2014, craft brewers produced 22.2 million barrels, and saw an 18 percent rise in volume (volume by craft brewers represents total taxable production) and a 22 percent increase in retail dollar value. Retail dollar value was estimated at $19.6 billion representing 19.3 percent market share.

“With the total beer market up only 0.5 percent in 2014, craft brewers are key in keeping the overall industry innovative and growing. This steady growth shows that craft brewing is part of a profound shift in American beer culture—a shift that will help craft brewers achieve their ambitious goal of 20 percent market share by 2020,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “Small and independent brewers are deepening their connection to local beer lovers while continuing to create excitement and attract even more appreciators.”

Additionally, the number of operating breweries in the U.S. in 2014 grew 19 percent, totaling 3,464 breweries, with 3,418 considered craft broken down as follows: 1,871 microbreweries, 1,412 brewpubs and 135 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Rhinegeist Brewery expands to meet racing demand for its production
Rhinegeist Brewery is investing $10 million to purchase their historic 112,000 sqft building, install a massive new brewhouse, and build a private event space & rooftop bar, Ohio.com reported on March 13.

Currently, Rhinegeist self-distributes its beer in Cincinnati and Dayton, and also sells its products in Northern Kentucky via Riverghost Distributing. Demand for their hoppy, sessionable beers is still outpacing supply, despite maxing out production on their existing brewhouse.

In fact the Brewers Association recently announced that Rhinegeist was the #1 top selling new craft brewery in the entire nation in 2014 (based on data from IRI, which compiles supermarket sales). That was a pretty shocking statistic, considering Rhinegeist only had its beer in a subset of regional supermarkets, and only for a portion of the year.

So, just 18 months into their operations, the Rhinegeist team put the wheels in motion on their 5-10 year plan to buy the building and construct a new brewhouse to increase capacity. The building was purchased right before Thanksgiving, with financing from Heartland Bank.

In order to fit a new brewhouse, 3 times the size of their existing one, Rhinegeist removed about 2/3 of the second floor, allowing the nearly 30’ tall fermenters to stand firm, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Northern United Brewing Co. working together with city administration to expand production of craft beer in Dexter
Northern United Brewing Co. wants to add product development and production kitchen and possibly a restaurant at its Dexter location. It also wants to dramatically increase production of its craft beer, but first the city needs to find out what it needs to handle the effluent such an expansion would add to its waste water system, heritage.com reported on March 13.

The city and Northern United Brewing Co. are working together to study ways to allow the brewer to expand its business without hurting city infrastructure.

The company is looking to expand production of its craft beer at its Dexter facility significantly over the next few years as well as adding a product development and production kitchen, a tasting room for its food products and even a restaurant. The city’s wastewater system has the capacity to handle the expansion, but it may need help with the added effluent expected from NUBC.

Community Development Director Michelle Aniol said the city and brewer are working with the Michigan Economic Development Corp. and the Michigan Department of Agriculture to get the process started. The MEDC can provide technical assistance and funding to do a study on getting the waste water system set up for the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MT: Imagine Nation Brewing opens in Missoula after six years in the making
It’s been a process the brewery’s founders say has been six years in the making, but Imagine Nation Brewing finally opened just outside of downtown Missoula on March, 13, NBC-Montana reported.

The brewery is the brainchild of a couple with experience as humanitarian workers in conflict zones, and their stated goal is to bring about social change through the togetherness of a community brewery.

“It's thrilling to be able to open after six years of working on this project, and really building a community that can support the launch of this vision. It's been pretty amazing to actually see people in the taproom and making it real,” said cofounder Robert Rivers.

The crew has six beers on top. The brewery is open Tuesday through Sunday, 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and is located at 1151 West Broadway.

Brewery news USA, NY: Good Nature Brewing in Hamilton looking to expand
A brewery in Hamilton is looking to expand after starting its company a few years ago, twcnews.com reported on March 15.

Good Nature Brewing was started in 2012 by married couple Matt Whalen and Carrie Blackmore. The couple has roots in the farming and culinary fields, and is now putting that experience to good use, brewing beer from ingredients sourced as locally as possible.

"We were home brewers, we started developing our recipes around what was available through our local growers. So to this day, not only do we use the same recipes, we've expanded our repertoire a little bit. We continue to work with primarily Madison County growers for our New York State grown ingredients", said Carrie Blackmore.

That effort earned them the title of New York State's first Farm Brewery, and the ability to open a tap room, separate from their small brewery. Their product has been so popular, just a year after opening they were at max brewing capacity. That's why they say it's time to build a new facility.

"In the first year we're hoping to expand our capacity by more than five times, with the possibility within the structure we're creating to up our capacity by more than 25 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Abide Brewing Company accepted into Newman’s community very gracefully
Newnan’s first brewery, Abide Brewing Company, opened for business a little more than a month ago and seems to have been accepted into the community gracefully. The brewery, located on Werz International Blvd., has offered several successful tours and tastings since its grand opening in February, Newman Times-Herald reported on March 15.

“It went better than expected,” said Evan Scanlan, one of the brewery’s founders. “We hoped it would sell, but we didn’t know it would sell out.”

Scanlan is one of three founders of Abide. He and two friends, Philip Leonard and Matt Kapusta, brewed as a hobby and always dreamed of taking their craft to a professional level. When the dream became a reality earlier this year, the demand and the response were bigger than the three men had anticipated.

Scanlan said the brewery was equipped with 18 kegs of beer for its first weekend in business, and in the span of three days, every keg was sold. This was the positive reception the men had hoped for. Abide Brewery moved quickly into marketing its craft beers to beer sold in local restaurants and bars. Rednexican was one of the first Newnan eateries to carry Abide beers. According to Scanlan, the ...More info on site

Brewery news Russia: Beer prices in Russia at 17-year high
Beer prices in Russia are at a 17-year high as the market is squeezed by government regulations and falling consumption, a report in the Izvestia newspaper said on March 13.

The cost of a litre of beer in Russia is now about 84 rubles ($1.40), twelve percent more than at the beginning of 2014 and the highest level since 1998, Izvestia said, citing data from Nielsen, a consumer research firm. A spokesperson for Nielsen confirmed the accuracy of the data.

The Russian beer market contracted 10.5 percent in January compared to the same period a year earlier, its biggest fall for half a decade, the paper said.

Brewers in Russia are streamlining operations and raising prices amid high excise duties, government regulation and decreased consumer spending caused by an economic slump.

According to state statistics service data, Russian headline inflation is running at almost 17 percent, propelled by a sharp devaluation of the ruble and bans on food imports from the European Union and the United States imposed in retaliation for sanctions on Moscow over Ukraine. Real wages are meanwhile falling.

Baltika, one of Russia's largest beer producers, said in January that it was closing two of the 10 breweries it operates in Russia, reducing ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Guinness sales rebound around St Patrick’s day but struggle for the rest of the year
The luck of the Irish shines on Guinness this time of year, The Wall Street Journal reported on March 15.

More than 13 million pints of the midnight stout are drunk worldwide on St Patrick’s Day, nearly four times as much as an average day, according to its owner, Diageo. The increase in sales is especially pronounced in the US where Irish beer brands led by Guinness combine for US$28.2 million in retail sales in March, more than double any other month and 16 per cent of annual US sales, according to Nielsen.

The spike is a blessing and a curse for Guinness. St Patrick’s Day — March 17 — turns up a surge of drinkers, but the brand struggles to maintain it during the rest of the year. In the US, which accounts for about 16 per cent of Guinness’s global volume, the brand’s volume declined 6 per cent to 107 million litres in 2013, according to Euromonitor.

Guinness USA is trying to reverse that decline by stretching sales beyond St Patrick’s Day. To encourage Americans to drink Guinness in warmer months, the brand signed a five-year, eight-figure renewal of its deal to sponsor a northern summer soccer tour — the Guinness ...More info on site

Brewery news Belarus: Lidskoye Pivo brewery to invest over €12 million in production development this year
OAO Lidskoye Pivo will invest over €12 million in production development in 2015, BelTA reported on March 13.

“Last year we continued gradual expansion and development of production facilities, logistics, warehouses. In 2015 we are planning to step up efforts to raise the production efficiency and offer new kinds of high-quality beer to our customers. This year our investments will be used to increase the manufacturing capacity and promote non-waste production. The investments will make up €12.2 million,” a representative of the company said.

The majority of investments will be used to finance the construction of the brewery shop. It is expected that the facility will raise the production capacity 1.5 times. There are also plans to launch a polyethylene bottling line and build a warehouse with the total area of 3,700 square meters. In 2014 OAO Lidskoye Pivo injected €12.9 million in production and logistics development.

Apart from the investment plans, the company also made public its last year's results. In 2014, the company sold a record amount of beer and beverages in the country and abroad. The brewery sold almost 170 million litres of drinks. Last year, the sales of beer on the domestic market went up 3.8% to 74.8 million ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: New report reveals beer prices will increase due to climate change in Australia
A new report reveals that the prices of popular consumer goods in Australia, including beer, wine and chocolates, will increase due to the severe climate change being experienced in the country, Tech Times reported on March 17.

The report, entitled Appetite for Change, was prepared by Richard Eckard and David Karoly, both of whom are climate scientists from the University of Melbourne.

The report looked to explain the effects of the climate change that Australia is currently experiencing. With the changing patterns of rainfall, extreme weather, warmer oceans and advent of diseases related to the climate, consumer goods in Australia will be experiencing effects in terms of quality, production and cost.

A total of 55 popular food items that can be seen in almost any Australian household have been listed under the consumer good that will be affected, or are already currently being affected, by the continued climate change.

Beer, wine and chocolate are among the popular items listed that could have increased prices. In addition, their taste will also change, according to Eckard.

Chocolate, for example, will be affected due to the lower supply of dairy items such as milk as caused by climate change. According to the report, cows are being stressed due ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Beer only accounts for 50% of alcohol sales and Indians prefer stronger brands
The Indian penchant for value buying extends to liquor, where there is a clear tendency to choose drinks which provide the strongest 'kick' for the buck. Sales of country liquor and Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) almost match that of beer, the world's most popular alcoholic beverage. And even among beer drinkers, the preference is for 'strong' beer with higher alcohol content: in 2014, 85% of them preferred it strong, Times of India reported on March 15.

The Indian preference for more alcohol in drinks is brought out by data collated by the All India Brewers Association. Beer sales account for only 50% of liquor sales in India - much lower than in China where it is 87%, Brazil (84%), US (83%) and UK (75%). Even within beer the preference is for stronger ones. Wine accounts for only 1% of liquor sales.

Exacerbating this behaviour in Maharashtra is a skewed excise duty structure where tax per volume of alcohol is higher on softer liquors. Although prima facie, a litre of beer attracts excise duty of only Rs 60 compared to Rs 225 on IMFL, the numbers change when the comparison is made on tax per alcohol volume. Beer on an average ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Oriental Brewery to bring in more premium beers from its parent AB InBev
Oriental Brewery (OB), Korea's largest brewer, will bring in more premium beer brands from its parent Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) to meet diversifying tastes, The Korea Times reported on March 15.

The company also plans to foster its "Cass" brand as one of Asia's top 10 beers within two years.

At a press conference on March 13, CEO Frederico Freire said OB would import products from AB InBev after studying what types of beer Koreans wanted.

"Consumers here want new tastes and new products," said Freire. "Given this, we are considering bringing in premium brands from abroad. We are trying to figure out consumer needs and the types of beer suited for the Korean market."

OB imports and sells Corona and several other non-Korean beers.

Freire came to Korea in November last year, replacing former CEO Chang In-soo.

In April 2014, AB InBev acquired OB, which accounts for about 60 percent of Korea's beer market, for $5.8 billion.

The CEO expressed optimism that the brewer would continue its dominance, despite the intensifying competition in the domestic market.

"Having new players and new brands is good for the Korean market," he said. "We have seen big changes in consumer tastes. They want new flavors and new experiences. We have ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea & Iraq: Korean beer gaining popularity in Iraq
Korean beer brands have been gaining popularity in Iraq. Korea’s beer exports to Iraq between November and January increased 194 percent to US$ 1.23 million compared to the same period in 2014, said the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) on March 16.

Although drinking is prohibited under Muslim law, alcohol consumption is more accepted in northern Iraq and the Kurdistan region where trade is robust due to the oil industry. The ministry attributed the recent rise in demand for Korean beer to the widespread popularity of Korean culture, such as the Jewel in the Palace TV series.

The MAFRA also said Korean beer is relatively low in alcohol, and as such 4.5 percent alcohol Korean beer stands out on the Iraqi market, which is dominated by 8 percent alcohol beer.

Korean beer is also selling well in China due to an incredibly famous beer-drinking scene in My Love from the Star, which was a big hit in China. Korea’s beer exports to China during January and February rose 213 percent to 2.35 million USD compared to the same period last year. Korea’s total beer exports also increased 26 percent to 11.0 million USD.
