ABSTRACT
A few more insights into understanding hop aroma were gained by these Belgian researchers who took 15 different hop varieties and carried out a set of comprehensive analyses. Not only were the hops analyzed, they were also used to produce different types of single hop variety beers with early hopping, late hopping and dry hopping. The hop varieties chosen were Cascade, Centenntial, Citra, Challenger, Cluster, Columbus, Galena, Magnum, Nugget, Palisade, Saaz, Simcoe, Sorachi Ace, Tettnanger and Warrior. The components measured were alcohols, saturated esters, unsaturated esters, monoterpene hydrocarbons, monoterpene alcohols, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and oxygenated sesquiterpenes. Within these groups of compounds varietal differences were obvious. The total concentration of esters before fermentation is variety dependent, but fermentation changes the picture. Transfer rates were calculated for linalool and geraniol, and in the case of gerianol, it was discovered that it is formed from other compounds during the course of brewing. Missing are the tasting results that could connect the analysis results with sensory impressions, but perhaps there is more to follow. Read more

Hungary: Beer sales up 2% last year owing to increase in demand for premium brands
|
Domestic sales of Hungarian breweries increased by 2% reaching 5.8 million hectolitres last year, Attila Schillinger, head of professional association MSSz, was quoted as saying by Budapest Business Journal on April 2.
Sales of premium beer climbed almost 23% and sales of the cheapest beer rose close to 6%, while sales of mid-range product dropped 4%.
The data are based on sales of Hungaryʼs top four breweries: Borsodi, Dreher, Heineken, and Pécsi. Including exports, their combined output reached 6.2 million hectolitres last year.

Greece & China & Italy: Heineken’s Greek subsidiary starts exporting to China and Italy
|
Athenian Brewery announced on April 2 it was launching Heineken beer exports to the Chinese and Italian markets, as the first batch set off on its long trip to the Far East, Kathimerini reported.
The beer for export will be produced at the brewery’s Patra plant, in an investment project amounting to 2 million euros. The decision was made in association with the parent company in Amsterdam and will boost employment in local communities as it involves the use of Greek raw materials.
“At first the new production line will be covered by existing employees, but this summer will see the gradual hiring of some seasonal workers,” Athenian Brewery’s managing director Zooullis Mina promised.
Plans provide for the production of 16 million litres of Heineken per year for the Chinese and Italian markets, which will require an extra 5,000 tons of barley.

The Philippines: Ginebra San Miguel, Inc. sells over P200 mln in hard assets to San Miguel Brewery, Inc.
|
Ginebra San Miguel, Inc. (GSMI) has sold over P200 million in hard assets - mainly those it uses for its non-alcoholic beverage business - to San Miguel Brewery, Inc. (SMB) for nearly P230 million, it told the stock exchange on April 1.
The liquor unit of San Miguel Corp. said it executed a deed of sale with SMB for the sale of property, plant and equipment used by GSMI in its non-alcoholic beverage business for P226.91 million, excluding value-added tax.
The assets consist of machinery and equipment, vehicles, coolers, chillers and other equipment at end-2014.
The transaction is in line with the move of the Philippine brewer to adopt a multi-beverage strategy through diversifying into non-alcoholic beverage.
In its consent solicitation to bondholders last January, SMB had said the non-alcoholic beverage category remains to have a larger share of consumption and is growing at a faster rate than the alcoholic category.
GSMI is the company behind the brands Ginebra, Antonov, Gran Matador, Don Enrique Mixkila, Vino Kulafu and Tondeña Manila Rum. It also sells non-alcoholic beverages under the Magnolia brand.
GSMI’s non-liquor units include San Miguel Beverages, Inc., which was bought from SMB in 2008, allowing the company to manufacture and distribute non-alcoholic beverage, according to

India: The state of Kerala may see beer shortage this summer
|
With bars shut and demand for 'strong' beer shooting up in the state, the Kerala State Beverages Corporation (KSBC) says it will not be able to meet requirements this summer, The Times of India reported on April 2.
The KSBC has placed an immediate order for 38 lakh cases of beer from beer companies but suppliers have only accepted orders for 22 lakh cases. Even with this, says KSBC managing director and excise commissioner Anil Xavier, they are likely to run short of 'strong' beer this summer.
"As the number of beer and wine parlours has increased in the last few months and with the advent of summer, the demand for beer has gone up. We do not have enough beer production in the state and we are placing orders outside. Even they cannot meet our demand as demand is high during summer in all states," Xavier said.
Currently, there are 499 beer and wine parlours in Kerala. With the Kerala high court upholding the state government's abkari policy, 300 bars have shut shop and many bar owners are likely to approach the excise department for beer and wine licences.
The KSBC has enough stock of light beer but is short of strong beer,

Russia: Prime Minister asks for proposals on possible extension of wheat export tax
|
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has asked his ministers to submit proposals by mid-April on a possible extension of a wheat export tax from July 1, when the new 2015 to ‘16 marketing year is due to start, the government said on April 2.
Russia has imposed a duty on wheat exports since Feb. 1 in an effort to cool domestic food inflation as the rouble tumbled. The measure is set to expire on June 30, but traders have expressed concerns the tax could be extended.
Medvedev has asked the ministers for agriculture, the economy and finance, working with industry unions, to provide a justification for maintaining the duty beyond June 30, the government said on its website.
However, the head of a leading agriculture consultancy, SovEcon, said chances were high that the duty would be removed from July 1.
“This view is supported by signs of slowing inflation and by a good situation with crops and stocks in Russia’s south, in Krasnodar and Stavropol regions,” SovEcon’s Andrey Sizov said.
Russia’s economy has been hit by a drop in global oil prices and Western sanctions over Moscow’s role in the Ukraine crisis. Inflation reached a 13-year high in February but has barely risen since then,
