The elegant way of dry hopping
ABSTRACT
Dry hopping is fun but also, you have to admit, a bit messy. These German researchers were looking for a way to dry hop without actually dry hopping. They established a process that works with sequenced desorption and absorption to transfer hop volatiles into beer. Hop volatile desorption from a hop-water mixture is forced by a stripping gas followed with a transfer in the gas stream to an absorption medium. The system, operating in a closed loop, was tested with both water and beer. This novel method features an easy to implement and cost-effective method for transferring hop aroma compounds into beer without directly bringing the beer in contact with hop solids that, for example, may introduce filtration and clarification problems. With a transfer rate for linalool of 65% within 24 hours, why not give it a try ? Read more

CANADA, AB: Six Corners Brew lauches as contract brewing operation in rural Alberta
|
Former brewer at Saskatoon’s Paddock Wood Brewing has struck out on his own with a new project based in the small town of Okotoks, Alberta, Canadian Beer News reported on March 31st.
Founded by Luke Wooldridge, Six Corners Brew Works has launched as a roving contract brewing operation, with Wooldridge planning to produce a series of one-off beers at various prairie breweries while he works toward opening his own facility.
The debut brand from Six Corners is Trailhead IPA, which was brewed at Original Joe’s in Saskatoon on a system that Wooldridge recently assisted in setting up. The 7.5% abv single-hop IPA was made using a hop variety that is so new it has no name, only a number – #07270 – to identify it.
Six Corners Trailhead IPA is available now at select liquor stores and bars in southern Alberta.

USA, WI: A successful crowdfunding campaign sets MobCraft at top
|
MobCraft Beer, the Wisconsin startup that brews a different beer each month based on online voting, moved closer this week to opening its own production facility, Xconomy reported on April 7th.
Fresh off completing one of the state’s first equity crowdfunding campaigns, the Madison-based brewer has proposed leasing a 13,000-square-foot building in Milwaukee’s Walker’s Point neighborhood that would significantly increase its brewing capabilities, co-founder Henry Schwartz says.
If MobCraft secures the Milwaukee space, its brewing capacity will immediately jump to 3,600 barrels annually, a number that could eventually reach 25,000 barrels, Schwartz says.
First, the city of Milwaukee must approve a zoning change to allow for heavy manufacturing in the building at 505 S. Fifth St, Schwartz says.
More importantly, MobCraft must pull together $2.06 million in financing to launch the brewery. The company was one of the first to take advantage of Wisconsin’s new law permitting equity crowdfunding—selling company shares online to state residents who normally wouldn’t have the means to invest in startups. A few months ago, MobCraft raised north of $68,000 from about 50 individuals through the campaign on Milwaukee-based CraftFund’s website.
MobCraft has also applied for a loan from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. that would cover a “significant part” of

USA, LA: A mutually convenient partnership to be formed between Enjoy Beer Holding Corp. and Abita Brewing Co
|
The oldest craft brewer in the Southeast has completed a three-year, $30 million state-of-the-art expansion. The expansion at Abita Brewing Company will increase its brewing capacity to 400,000 barrels, WDAM reported on April 7th.
Abita is also becoming a founding Brewery Partner of Enjoy Beer LLC, an enterprise created to provide resources on a national scale to a select group of top independent craft brewers across the country.
Enjoy Beer was formed to create partnerships with top craft brewers who wish to preserve their local independence, while gaining shared resources in areas such as distribution, sales, marketing and logistical expertise. The resources needed to compete with large-scale corporate competitors.
"As a local brewer deeply rooted in our Louisiana culture, I've always dreamed of an opportunity to help develop something like Enjoy Beer," says David Blossman, President of Abita Beer and Board Member of Enjoy Beer.
"Enjoy Beer will pioneer a new model in the industry, and together, Enjoy Beer and Abita can compete at the next level by expanding the reach of a beloved brand to share the unique culture of New Orleans with the rest of the country," said President and Founder of Enjoy Beer Richard Doyle.
Currently, Abita produces eight year-round beers,

USA, OR: Brewing industry’s payrolls increase in 2014
|
The brewing industry in Central Oregon added one new brewery in 2014, a period in which Oregon overall added 29 for a total of 225 brewing establishments, according to the Oregon Employment Department, The Bulletin reported on April 8th.
However, existing breweries in Central Oregon expanded during the year, adding another 20 percent to their payrolls for a total of $27.1 million, wrote Regional Economist Damon Runberg. Only Portland-area breweries accounted for more in wages last year: $76.5 million.
Taking all Central Oregon brewers into account, they employed 1,011 people, on average, in breweries and brewpubs last year. In Deschutes County, home to all but one of 29 brewing establishments in Central Oregon, breweries accounted for 1.5 percent of total private employment last year. Brewers added 124 jobs in 2014, a 14 percent growth rate, Runberg wrote.
Brewery workers earn a median hourly wage of $15.50 and pub workers $14.70, according to the report.
Neither Deschutes County nor Bend can claim the most breweries or the most breweries per capita, even in Oregon.
“There is one brewing establishment for every 5,738 residents in Deschutes County,” Runberg wrote.
The concentration is higher in Hood River County, at one for every 3,390 residents, and in Clatsop County, with

USA, MN: Lakes & Legends Brewing Co. to open near Loring Park in Minneapolis
|
A desired lifestyle change drove Ethan Applen to co-found Lakes & Legends Brewing Company - a new production brewery coming to the Loring Park area in Minneapolis, Vita.mn reported on April 6th.
"I wanted to get closer to the end product and the consumer," Applen said. "To me, it's really exciting to actually talk to the person that's using whatever it is you're making and actually get that connection."
Corporate no more, Applen teamed up with his brother-in-law and ex-Red Bull marketing and events guy Derrick Taylor to enter the brew business. They hope to begin construction on their 12,000-square-foot space in the LPM Apartments building by the end of April. Applen hopes to begin distribution soon after opening.
Applen has a five-year experience in homebrewing. However, he entrusted the task of head brewing in Lakes & Legends to Andrew Dimery. Dimery has worked at Indianapolis' Sun King Brewing and more recently at Bluegrass Brewing Company in Louisville.
While they're still determining which specific styles will become core beers, the emphasis on Belgian and farmhouse ales stems from Applen's personal tastes. "They're very individual," he said. "There's not a strict uniformity that there might be to some other styles."

CANADA, ON: Bobcaygeon Brewing to start as a contract brewery
|
A small and picturesque Ontario town immortalized in a song by the “Tragically Hip” is the inspiration for province’s newest virtual brewery, Toronto Brewing reported on March 31st.
Founded by partners Vincent Castronovo and Richard Wood, Bobcaygeon Brewing made its debut at Kingston Craft Beer Festival with Bobcaygeon Pale Ale at the end of March.
Currently being brewed under contract, the eponymous brand is a 4.2% abv and 42 IBU ale described as follows:
A hop forward session beer, aimed to be enjoyed in all settings, from on the dock with friends on a nice summer day, or in front of a roaring fire with a book. Featuring Australian and North American hops, the floral and citrus notes shine through, but are balanced with the lighter taste to leave a beer that is refreshing and easy drinking.

USA, NC: Preyer Brewing Co. counts down days till opening
|
Along with the final permitting and inspections, as well as minor construction items and decorating, there's also a lot of beer to make as Preyer Brewing Co. prepares to open in downtown Greensboro by the end of this month, Triad Business Journal reported on April 7.
The new brewery has been settling into its home in the former Steele & Vaughn building at 600 Battleground Ave. since last year, as Paul Joseph Custom has outfitted the building for the brewing operation and taproom.
The 10-barrel brewhouse is complemented by one 20-barrel and four 10-barrel stainless steel fermentation tanks, which co-owner and brewer Calder Preyer said should allow them to produce 750 to 1,250 barrels during the brewery's first year.
Longer term, the addition of seven more 20-barrel tanks should allow the brewery to push production to 5,000 barrels a year, Preyer said. Along with the porter and the two ale options, Preyer Brewing is also planning to make a Belgian blonde, and may later branch out into lagers and other varieties.
Preyer Brewing Co. is a family affair among the Preyers, who have deep roots in Greensboro, and they wanted the taproom to reflect that Greensboro textile and industrial heritage, she said.
"There was

USA, CA: Dust Bowl Brewing to expand their business in Turlock
|
The empty dirt lot at the intersection of Fulkerth Avenue and Dianne Drive in Turlock, CA was not so empty on April 8th as Dust Bowl Brewing Company owners, their friends, family, and various stakeholders gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of the beer company’s expansion, Turlock Journal reported on April 9th.
A downtown hotspot for years, the taproom and eatery portion of Dust Bowl Brewing Company is just one segment of the brewery’s operation. The new facility at Fulkerth and Dianne will house the company’s brewing, bottling, storage, shipping, and business operations which will be open 24 hours a day.
Founded in 2009, Dust Bowl has been brewing beer at a 3,000 square foot facility in Turlock’s Industrial Park that allows the company to produce roughly 4,000 barrels of beer annually. With the expansion the company projects that 17,000 barrels of beer a year will fulfil the initial capacity with sales projected to reach 10,000 barrels in the first year. Currently Dust Bowl is selling the maximum amount of beer it can — 5,400 barrels annually — at its present facility on Spengler Way.

USA, MA: Newburyport Brewing Co.’s rapid growth bursts expansion
|
Newburyport Brewing Company is preparing a major cellar expansion that will double on-site production capacity to more than 15,000 barrels per year, NorthofBoston reported on April 9th.
To meet increasing demand for its craft beers, the all-can and keg craft brewery is using a $280,000 Export Equipment Loan from MassDevelopment to purchase American-made tanks that will double the brewery’s current annual production of 7,500 barrels.
MassDevelopment, the state’s finance and development agency, provides financing and real estate programs to support Massachusetts businesses.
“Newburyport Brewing has been growing rapidly and gaining widespread recognition for its craft beers,” said Marty Jones, president and CEO of MassDevelopment. “MassDevelopment is pleased to partner with Newburyport Brewing to help the company scale up its brewing operations and hire more full- and part-time employees.”
In addition to its expansion, the brewery recently announced a partnership with Delta Air Lines to serve its Newburyport Pale Ale on Northeast Regional Shuttle flights.
Co-founded in 2012 by two local Newburyport entrepreneurs, musicians and home brewers – Webb and Bill Fisher – Newburyport Brewing Company aims to capture the essence of Newburyport's quaint seaside character across a line of great tasting handcrafted ales.

USA, WA: North Jetty Brewing to triple its capacity two years ahead of schedule
|
North Jetty Brewing will soon christen its new 10-barrel brewing system, tripling its capacity at least two years ahead of schedule, Chinook Observer reported on April 7th.
Erik and Michelle Svendsen bought the brewery on December 2013. It had a 1½-barrel system then. A barrel is 31 gallons. The Svendsens would brew two batches back to back to make about six kegs of beer. The new capacity is far more efficient.
“So a single batch will give us about 18 to 20 kegs,” Erik said. “It’s less work for a lot more product.”
North Jetty produced about 165 barrels of beer in 2014; this year the brewery expects to hit 750 barrels with the new system coming online in the second quarter. It will give the Svendsens the capacity of about 1,000 barrels in a full year.
Demand for North Jetty beer forced the couple to move their timetable up a few years. Their product is distributed by Kendall’s Pioneer Distributing in Southwest Washington as far north as Olympia. Fort George distributes North Jetty in Clatsop and Tillamook counties. It’s also sold on the Long Beach Peninsula.
“We weren’t expecting to expand this fast; we had more like a two- to three-year plan, but the
