USA, FL: Florida among the states with most brewery openings in 2014
|
Florida welcomed the fifth most breweries across the U.S. in 2014, with 42 new beer makers setting up shop here in 2014.
The Brewers Association named Florida among the top states for brewery openings at the Craft Brewers Conference in Portland, Oregon, reported BeerinFlorida.com on April 30.
The total number of Florida breweries that make beer on-location is estimated at 139, according to the craft beer news site.
Washington topped the rankings with 84 brewery openings in 2014, followed by New York with 67 openings, California with 59 and Colorado with 55.
South Florida's craft beer scene is beginning to rise, with a growing number of breweries announcing their grand openings, including Twisted Trunk Brewing in Palm Beach Gardens, Barrel of Monks Brewing in Boca Raton and J. Wakefield Brewing in Miami.

USA, NY: Long Beach City Council adopted a zoning change to support brewing industry
|
To further the brewing industry’s potential as a lucrative business and economic driver, the Long Beach City Council has initiated a zoning change that will make it easier for craft breweries, wineries and distilleries with tasting rooms to open shop throughout the city, according to city officials, reported Signal Tribune on May 1.
“Craft breweries fuel local jobs and community investment, which are integral to generating lasting growth,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “It’s no secret that this progressive, business-friendly initiative will have a solid economic impact on our economy.”
On April 7, 2015, the City Council adopted a zoning code amendment permitting craft breweries, wineries, distilleries and accessory tasting rooms to operate within commercial, industrial and certain planned development (PD) districts. The zoning change streamlines the application and permitting process, reducing the time and costs associated with starting this type of business. The ordinance also provides concise development standards designed to guide new projects and minimize impacts to commercial neighbours.
“This zoning update will allow the City to capitalize on a fast-growing industry by using our existing assets – thriving commercial areas, unlimited inventory of existing building stock and a regional reputation as a foodie destination – to their highest potential,” said Amy

|
Construction is under way on Crane Brewing's Raytown brewery. The equipment should be arriving mid-May, and brewing should begin in June. The Crane crew is planning the official opening for August, reported Pitch Blogs on August 30.
The brewery has started a crowd-funding campaign through CrowedBrewed with a goal of $40,000.
Crane started the crowd-funding campaign with the goal of picking up some extra barrels, kegs and testing equipment. Crane also wants to do some one-off merchandise and events. And it's a way to give back to the brewery's fans and get them involved, says vice president Chris Meyers.

USA, PA & AR: Victory Brewing Company to expand distribution to Arkansas
|
Victory Brewing Company will soon expand its distribution footprint to include Arkansas, officials announced on April 30.
Pennsylvania-based Victory Brewing will enter the market under distribution by Arkansas Craft Distributors.
Arkansas residents could get their first taste of Victory brews on May 9 at the Fayetteville Foam Fest craft beer festival.
“We’ve had many requests to bring our beer to Arkansas and are extremely excited we can finally oblige by offering our full-flavoured beer to these fans and introducing Victory Brewery to a new audience of craft beer lovers,” said Steve German, vice president of sales and marketing.
Founded by childhood friends, Bill Covaleski and Ron Barchet, Victory Brewery officially opened its doors in 1996. It has since grown to become the 26th largest craft brewery in the country, with distribution in 36 states.
It’s been an exciting couple of years for beer drinkers in Northwest Arkansas.
Retail shelves that were once dominated by bland-tasting macro brands are now filled with an enormous variety of delicious craft beer, including a host of local and national breweries.
Recent distribution into the state includes nationally-known brands like Prairie, Summit, Founders, Six Point, Southern Star, Horny Goat, Bayou Teche, COOP, and Kona.

USA, TX: Pedernales Brewing raking in beer awards and production growth

Pedernales Brewing Co. is coming off another impressive showing for its lineup of beers, winning four medals at the Los Angeles International Beer Competition, mysanantonio.com reported on May 1.
The Fredericksburg-based brewery won gold medals for its Lobo Negro and Classic IPA, silver for Robert Earl Keen Honey Pils and bronze for the Lobo Oktoberfest.
Since the beginning of the year, Pedernales has won three gold medals, four silver, one bronze and one Best of Show honour from the Ensenada Beer Competition, which took place in Mexico City in March. And since June 2014, the brewery has raked in six golds, seven silvers, two bronze, one Best of Class award, one Best of Show and one People’s Choice, said Lee Hereford, the company’s president and CEO.
Aside from all the honours, the company is recording double-digit growth and expects to ramp up production another 20 percent by the third quarter. Two 80-barrel ferments will be delivered to the brewery this summer. Robert Earl Keen Honey Pils is the brewery’s top selling beer.

Canada, ON: Second brewery to open in North Bay
|
The brewing business in North Bay is suddenly starting to come alive, as a second company has announced it will be entering the micro brewing business, reported BayToday.ca on May 4.
John Lechlitner, owner of Cecil’s Eatery & Beer Society on Main Street, North Bay said on May 04 that Cecil’s will start making its own brew.
“We are very excited with the evolution of Cecil’s,” said Lechlitner. “Through the years we have undergone several changes but this new direction is by far our most exciting.”
Cecil’s has been a North Bay fixture for years, and domestic, craft and international beer selections have always played an important role in the Cecil’s brand and culture.
“The decision to start brewing our own premium beers on-site is really a natural part of who we are here at Cecil’s,” said Lechlitner. “We carefully considered all the options before making a choice as to the brewing system we would employ.”
After years of research and consideration, and lots of taste testing, Lechlitner came to the conclusion that SmartBrew offered everything required to ensure a clean, flavourful, consistent product.
SmartBrew is a state of the art brew system from New Zealand, with a Canadian component, which provides for high quality, onsite

USA, WI: St. Francis Brewing revises the expansion plan
|
St. Francis Brewing Co. is no longer considering a site in Milwaukee's Menomonee Valley for a new brewery, and is instead focusing on a smaller expansion plan at a neighbouring building, as quoted by Journal Sentinel on May 1.
St. Francis Brewing, a brew pub, in 2014 proposed a new 20,000-square-foot brewery and banquet hall in a storage building it owns at 3815 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., Saint Francis. That property is next to the brew pub, which opened at 3825 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. in 2009.
Owner Rick Michalski, said the company needs a second brewery to meet the rapidly growing demand for carryout packaged beer, which it sells in liquor stores, supermarkets and other retail outlets. St. Francis Brewing now contracts with Sand Creek Brewing Co., in Black River Falls, to brew and bottle its brands.
St. Francis Brewing faced a $1.7 million gap in its financing plan for the Kinnickinnic Ave., in Saint Francis facility, and sought city financing help for the $8.5 million project.
Michalski also placed under contract an alternative site: 2 acres in the 800 block of W. Canal St., Milwaukee.
But that Menomonee Valley site, Milwaukee, would have required extensive pilings to make the soil

USA, TN: Moccasin Bend Brewing Co. to open in a new location
|
Moccasin Bend Brewing Co.'s taproom in St. Elmo is now closed, and owners are looking for a new location, according to their business’ Facebook page announcement of April 24.
Management has been updating customers via the business' Facebook page.
“We will be leaving our present location very soon, most likely at the end of the month. It is not our decision to leave St. Elmo or our location and we are saddened to do so. We will immediately begin seeking new locations and will keep you posted,” announced Moccasin Bend Brewing Company on April 24.
After that, a manager said that details were still up in the air but that the business would be moving from 4015 Tennessee Ave., St. Elmo. The manager also advised customers to check updates on Facebook for more information.
“Hey guys, sorry for the confusion, but we will unfortunately be closed on April 29. Our negotiation attempts to secure sufficient time to move out and properly send off this location have failed, so we will be spending the duration of our time packing. Again, we thank you for your enduring support. We will keep you updated as we look for a new location. See you soon!”

USA, MI: Tecumseh Brewing Co. opened in Tecumseh
|
The start was later than originally planned, but Tecumseh Brewing Co. is officially open for business, as reported by Lenconnect.com on May 2.
“It was a long journey, but we finally made it and we are excited,” said co-owner Kyle DeWitt.
The brewpub at 128 W. Chicago Blvd., Tecumseh is open 11 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday and noon to midnight on Sunday. The business works in a pub style.
DeWitt said the first week has been a growing and learning process.
“All of the non-corporate craft brewers in Michigan tend to go to this style,” DeWitt said. “This gives you more freedom. You can get your food and your beer quicker this way. We like our system. It’s just a matter of getting efficient enough and that comes with time.”
DeWitt and Schmidt have been working more than three years on the project. In April 2014, they hosted a pair of tasting events that introduced some of their brewpub’s offerings.
“When we had our pre-tasting trial run with all the food, we were, like ‘Yeah, this is going to be good,’” DeWitt said. “The support has been there and people are really excited about it.”
Both he and Schmidt have had more than a decade

USA, NC: Check Six Brewing Co. to open in Southport
|
As breweries continue to boom across the state of North Carolina, Brunswick County, Southport now has one to call its own. Check Six Brewing Co., owned and operated by the Hassel and Goldman families, is now open in Southport after months of construction delays, reports Greater Wilmington Business Journal.
“We’re so thankful to the town of Southport for all of their support,” said Wendy Hassel, director of taproom operations.
Tim Hassel and Noah Goldman began homebrewing in 2006 and it wasn’t long before family and friends began encouraging them to start their own brewery. When the Goldmans relocated to Southport four years ago, Noah and his son Mike began scouting out locations for a brewery and taproom.
The brewery’s aviation theme stems from Tim Hassel’s career as an Air Force colonel and fighter pilot.
The name Check 6, short for "Check your six o'clock position," comes from a phrase used by fighter pilots that means to look behind you for enemy aircraft. Fighter pilots reference position using a clock face. For example, 12 o'clock is straight ahead, 9 o'clock directly off to the left wing and 6 o'clock is directly behind. The term has become synonymous with “watch your back” among those in the

USA, MI: Glass House Brewing aims to open on Ann Arbor's west side
|
The Payeur family has worked at the family business, Diamond Glass & Feiners, for years. Now it’s starting a second family venture, Glass House Brewing, ConcentrateMedia reported on May 6.
The Payeurs will dedicate half of its window and door installation space at 2350 W Liberty Road, Ann Arbor, to the new microbrewery, and are currently on track to open in June as construction wraps up.
"It's been a longtime coming, but it's close now," says Brent Payeur, master brewer & co-founder of Glass House Brewing.
Payeur was introduced to craft brewing by his fiancee about a decade ago, and he fell hard for the hobby. That led him to recruit his brother and father to open their own brewery on Ann Arbor’s west side.
"I just fell in love with it," Payeur says. "We go on brewery tours all the time. I started home brewing six years ago and love the art of it."
The brewery will open with a staff of four people. "I am hoping to add staff to keep up with the demand," Payeur says.

USA: MillerCoors sued for selling Blue Moon as craft beer
|
A California craft beer drinker has filed a class action lawsuit against MillerCoors, claiming that Blue Moon's parent company tricked him into thinking the mass-produced wheat ale is a craft beer. Evan Parent, the plaintiff leading the suit, brought the case forward on behalf of all Blue Moon buyers in California and says the premium price tag, placement among other craft beers, and labels and advertisements with slogans like "artfully crafted" falsely portrays the beer as a hand-crafted, independently-owned product, reported Men’s Journal.
Parent points to the definition of a craft brewer, set by the craft beer trade group, the Brewer's Association. It states that a craft brewer must be small (less than 6 million barrels, which MillerCoors exceeds), independent (not owned by a non-craft brewery or business), and traditional (using traditional and innovative ingredients).
MillerCoors may not seem to fit that model, but federal government doesn't technically have a definition for craft breweries, says Danielle Teagarden, a lawyer at the Seattle-based Reiser Legal that specializes in the brewing industry. "Craft is just what the consumer thinks it is. I wouldn't think Boston Beer is craft; how big does a brewery have to be?"
Playing to Parent's favour, however, are California's consumer

Fiji: Coca-Cola Amatil opens extended brewery in Fiji
|
Coca-Cola Amatil has opened its expanded brewery in Suva as part of an aggressive export push for its Fijian beer and rum brands, NBR reported on April 30.
CC Amatil’s managing director for alcohol and coffee, Shane Richardson, said the company’s loss-making beer division would break even this year.
Earnings have fallen short of target since the company began brewing again after a two-year break.
It has reinvested in the industry, joining with its partner Casella Family Wines to launch Yenda Pale Ale as part of a push into the craft beer market.
CC Amatil has also invested $A11 million on the Suva brewery, operated by Paradise Beverages. The expansion has doubled its annual capacity to five million cases of beer.
Mr Richardson says there is a huge opportunity to export Vonu Pure Lager as well as Bounty Rum.
“We believe Vonu has enormous potential,” he says. “It’s a great beer from the Pacific and we are doing more work on the positioning and look of the brand.
“We plan to take that to the wider market with the key markets being Asia, Europe, the Americas and Australia. If you look at other Fiji brands, they have had some very strong success, especially in the American market

Angola: Chinese Bela beer winning over Luanda’s consumers
|
Bela beer, a brand new beer brewed by the China Investment Fund (CIF) Luanda Brewery LTD, is emerging in all shopping centres in Luanda and adding a new flavor for local beer consumers, Xinhua reported on May 2.
"I love Bela, the beer seems light but very tasty", said 45- year-old Sebastio Junior, who was taking a 12-bottle pack of Bela from the shelters of the Jumbo shopping mall in southern Luanda, "I called my friends to join me for Bela to mark the labor day as we are having a day off."
