My dear hop variety, how can I smell who you are?
ABSTRACT
If aroma-relevant sulfur thiols are involved, this group or researchers is too. When we talk about the following varieties: Amarillo, Citra, Hallertau Blanc, Mosaic, and Sorachi Ace, all of us who ever worked with them, know how distinct each one is in flavor and aroma. These researchers have looked into the composition of volatiles of these varieties to identify compounds and concentrations on which this distinctiveness can be based. They found that Sorachi Ace contains higher amounts of farnesene (2101 mg/kg) than Saaz. All hops investigated showed an exceptional citrus-like potential exhibited by monoterpenic alcohols and polyfunctional thiols. Among the monoterpenic alcohols, B-citronellol at concentrations above 7 mg/kg distinguished Amarillo, Citra, Hallertau Blanc, Mosaic, and Sorachi Ace from Nelson Sauvin and Tomahawk, while linalool (312 mg/kg) and geraniol (211 mg/kg) remained good discriminating compounds for Nelson Sauvin and Tomahawk respectively. Regarding polyfunctional thiols, higher amounts of 3-mercapto-hexyl acetate (27 M/kg) characterized the Citra variety. Free 4-mercapto-4-methylpentan-2-one proved discriminant for Sorachi Ace, while the bound form is predominant in Nelson Sauvin. On the other hand, an S-conjugate of 3-mercapto-hexan-1-ol was found in Sorachi Ace at levels not far from those previously reported for Cascade, although the free form was undetected here. Both free and bound grapefruit-like 3-mercapto-4-methylpentan-1-ol emerged as discriminating compounds for the Hallertau Blanc variety. In conclusion, although much diversity was found - all proved to contain an exceptional citrus-like potential. In Sorachi Ace, B-citronellol is probably the main compound responsible for such notes, while in others, polyfunctional thiols such as 3MHA (Citra) or 3M4MPol (Hallertau Blanc, Mosaic) could play a key role. UK: SABMiller acquires London-based craft brewer Meantime
|
SABMiller plc, the world's second-largest brewer has decided to buy a piece of the UK craft beer market, with the acquisition of London-based company Meantime Brewing, The Telegraph reported on May 15.
SABMiller said the acquisition gave it "an entry point into the fastest-growing segment of the UK beer market" and would complement its Peroni and Pilsner offerings.
The international drinks giant said that it planned to expand Meantime's sales nationally and export its brews to European markets. Nick Miller, CEO of Meantime, will continue to lead the company, which producers London Pale Ale and London Lager.
Sue Clark, managing director of SABMiller Europe, said: "Nick Miller, Alastair Hook and their team have built a strong sense of pride and identity within Meantime, which has an excellent reputation for brewing consistently high quality beers and for industry-leading innovation."
"This expertise will boost our strategy to develop beers that appeal to more people, including women, and which can be attractive alternatives to wine and spirits," she added.
The announcement came in the same week that SABMiller's chief executive, admitted that lager marketing had often been "insulting" to women.
The FTSE 100 chief said that industry advertising "for many years was either dismissive of, or insulting to, women”.

Zimbabwe: SABMiller’s Delta Corporation sees full-year profit decline 13%
|
Delta Corporation Ltd., the Zimbabwean brewer that’s the southern African nation’s biggest company by market value, said full-year profit declined 13 percent as a sluggish local economy curbed consumer spending, Bloomberg reported on May 13.
“The slowdown in the economy resulted in a very difficult trading year,” the Harare-based unit of London’s SABMiller Plc said a statement published on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange’s website. “Consumer spend declined significantly.”
Zimbabwe’s main stock index, which began using U.S. dollars after the country abandoned its local currency amid soaring inflation, has dropped 5.5 percent this year, the worst performance after Mauritius among 14 benchmark sub-Saharan African indexes tracked by Bloomberg.
Economic growth is set to slow to 2.8 percent this year from an estimated 3.2 percent in 2014, according to the International Monetary Fund.
Delta’s net income for the year ending March 31 dropped to $92.8 million from $107.2 million, while revenue declined 4 percent to $576.6 million, the company said. Earnings per share decreased to 7.44 cents from 8.55 cents. Lager beer volume fell 17 percent and soft drinks were down 6 percent. South Korea: Craft beer culture popularity spreading among Korean consumers

It has long been a common remark that the best beer on the Korean peninsula is found north of the Demilitarized Zone, The Korea Herald reported on May 15.
But increasingly this refrain is failing to do justice to South Korea’s much-diversified beer market, which has lately seen the rise of craft beer.
Craft beer refers to beer produced by small brewers ― known as microbreweries ― and in small batches. In the Korean context, it is beer that is not brewed by any of the major liquor corporations ― Oriental Brewery, Hite Jinro, and Lotte Liquor.
Until recently, craft beer was considered an exotic gourmet option, as big name tap houses such as Craftworks and Magpie were mostly located in Itaewon, Seoul, reflecting the demand of foreigners who frequented the area.
The recent growth spurt started with Alley Kat, a Canadian beer that started selling here in 2005 and went viral among expats seeking a taste of home.
Based on this ardent response, the craft beer culture soon spread to the local food and beverage industry, capturing the attention of domestic consumers.

Malaysia: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia divests stake in import beverages distributor Luen Heng

Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd is selling its 70% stake in Luen Heng F&B Sdn Bhd to Capriwood Sdn Bhd for RM19.5 mln as it seeks to focus on its beer business, The Star Online reported on May 15.
It said on May 15 the sale was to align with its parent company Carlsberg Group’s strategy to “Focus on beer as core” and to maximise the return on capital invested.
On completion of the sale, Carlsberg Malaysia said it would exit Luen Heng, an established distributor and supplier of imported beers, wines and spirits.
“By focusing on beer and divesting its wine and spirits businesses, the brewer will continue to sell selected imported beers by Luen Heng in order to offer the most comprehensive locally-brewed and imported range of beers to its customers and consumers.
“The long-standing business synergies between the brewer and the distributor shall continue going forward,” it said.
Carlsberg Malaysia said proceeds from the sale would be re-invested in its commercial activities behind its core beer brands. The brewer does not expect the sale to have a material impact on Carlsberg Malaysia’s second quarter results in the second quarter.

Russia: Russia ends tax on grain exports earlier than planned
|
Russia agreed to end a tax on grain exports a month and a half earlier than planned after the country’s inflation slowed, easing concern over soaring bread costs, Bloomberg reported on May 15.
A decree was signed by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and a posting on the government’s Twitter account said the tax ceases on May 15. Russia, the fourth-biggest wheat exporter last year, aims to prevent an oversupply of grain on the domestic market and support farmers, according to a press release posted on the Cabinet website. Exports may increase by as much as 1 million metric tons, according to the statement.
Less inflation and the rising rouble have helped stabilize Russia’s economy, giving the government room to ease restrictions on grain shipments. The tax was designed to rein in food prices after the rouble collapsed last year and the economy buckled under plunging oil prices and international sanctions over the conflict in Ukraine.
“If Russia opens their export channel that will put pressure on wheat prices,” Daryna Kovalska, a London-based analyst at Macquarie Group Ltd., said by telephone. “They have big stocks accumulated domestically and that will definitely flood the market.”
