Brewery news USA, MA: Indignant Brewing Company to join the Somerville's Winter Hill’s community
A new brewery, Indignant Brewing Company, is in the works in Somerville's Winter Hill, located at 328 Broadway. Indignant Brewing Company recently filed its Certificate of Organization with the state, Eater reported on May 27.

The team is "really hoping for a September opening," but there are a variety of permits that will need to be obtained first. Co-owner/head brewer Jeff Rowe has been planning Indignant for the past five years with general manager Bert Holdredge, an alumni of The Publick House as well as Moe's Tavern in Lee, MA.) "It's been an ever-evolving concept," writes Rowe on the Indignant Brewing Co.’s website, "but with the help of many, we've arrived at a concept that we couldn't be happier with; a concept we can't wait to share."

The name, he writes, "is meant as a bit of a push back at the industry and [his] experience within it," a quickly growing industry where "it's easy to think big" instead of thinking about quality. "Indignant is our promise of quality, passion, and care," he continues. "Indignant is our commitment to our patrons, that we will provide a meaningful experience. This is all more than beer for us at Indignant. It’s a way of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Liberty Street Brewing Co. to open in Livonia, Michigan
Liberty Street Brewing Co. is opening a new production facility in Livonia, Michigan, this year, Hometownlife.com reported on May 28.

Brewmaster Joe Walters said customers have a wider selection of beers to choose from.

"What that allows us to do is not brew them in Plymouth anymore," said Walters, a Livonia resident. "So if you go into Plymouth right now and want specialty beer, we've got five or six specialty brews.

"We used to be limited to one batch a month of the specialty brews. Now, we can brew two or three batches in a row."

With the new facility, Walters said the brewery expects to increase the number of barrels made from 400 to (1,200-1,600) in just a year.

Liberty Street Brewing is the first Michigan craft brewer to have a presence in Livonia, something that received city council’s approval late last year. It exists solely as a production facility and will not sell bottles or glasses in Livonia.

Brewery news Russia: Draft bill banning plastic beer bottles of 1.5 litres and more to be contested by the government
A draft bill in Russia that proposes to ban plastics beer bottles of 1.5 litres or above is to be contested by the country’s government, which will instead look for a balanced solution when the parliament meets again to debate the projected law, according to local news reports.

Beer bottles made from PET packaging have a large market share in the Eastern European country, with estimates showing that more than 50 per cent of beer produced in Russia is sold in plastics packaging.

The Russian parliament has been debating the bill since 2013. In that time, local brewers have prepared for the new rules by proposing to scrap beer production in containers over 2.5-litre.

Brewery news Brazil: Senate passes bill which may increase taxes on imported beer and other imported products
Brazil’s Senate passed a bill on May 28 that, if made law, will increase taxes on a range of imported products, videonews.us reported.

Everything from beer to perfumes will require higher taxes, ostensibly both to boost revenues and protect the domestic market.

Two import taxes are affected, which together would increase tax contributions from 9.25 percent to 11.75 percent on most products — and up to 20 percent in some cases.

Among the affected products are vehicles, including buses, vans, related machinery, automobile parts, tires and inner tubes; pharmaceutical and contraceptive products; paper; toiletries, perfumes, and hygiene products; imported beers and bottled soft drinks, including water and juices.

The bill now proceeds to President Dilma Rousseff for sanctioning.

The government said the bill is part of a package of measures to readjust the economy which has already included tax hikes in other areas, including state-administered prices such as water and electricity bills, and that it give a boost to national industry.

“Today we help complete this piece of our strategy to balance the economy,” said Finance Minister Joaquim Levy, defending the move as crucial for domestic markets and industry.

If made law, the select tax increases are expected to accrue additional revenues of $220 million (694 million ...More info on site

Brewery news New Zealand: Craft beer maker Moa Group cuts annual loss by 5% and boosts sales by nearly a third
Moa Group, New Zealand’s listed boutique beer maker, has cut its annual loss by 5 percent and boosted sales by nearly a third in its latest financial results, BusinessDesk reported on May 28.

The Auckland-based brewer, which went public in 2012, reported a net loss of NZ$5.58 million in the year ended March 31, compared to loss of NZ$5.82 million the previous year. Revenue rose to NZ$6.1 million from NZ$4.59 million while sales volumes climbed 40 percent to 1.7 million litres, near what the company’s prospectus forecast it would achieve in the 2014 financial year

Chief executive Geoff Ross said the company remains around 12 months behind its original business plan, having initially struggled to meet sales forecasts which it blamed on its now dumped distributor, Treasury Wine Estates.

Moa overhauled its business strategy in late 2013, changing to a direct distribution model, shifting focus to the New Zealand and Australian markets, and outsourcing much of its beer production to McCashin’s Brewery in Nelson while making its higher-margin speciality brews at its Blenheim site. Ross said in hindsight it should have always had a direct sales and distribution structure and he shoulders the blame for that mistake.

Its NZ$1.25 IPO price has fallen markedly ...More info on site
