Brewery news USA, CA & NC: Sierra Nevada Brewing Company to increase production at its North Carolina brewery
Sierra Nevada Brewing will increase production by 40 percent in about a month when it finishes installation of 10 new fermenting tanks at its brewery in Mills River, North Carolina, Hendersonville Lightning reported on June 2.

The production expansion from 350,000 to 500,000 barrels a year has been planned from the start and is unrelated to water usage cutbacks that the brewery is bracing for at its home base in Chico, Calif.

“That isn’t the reason for the increase,” said Stan Cooper, co-manager of the Mills River plant. “This is part of the expansion plan for Mills River. We actually sped it up just a little bit because of our growth in the whole craft industry.

“This expansion here is part of the whole master plan for Sierra Nevada’s production to grow here in Mills River.”

“Chico makes roughly 70 percent of seasonals now and Mills River 30. With the ramped up production, the Mills River’s share “will be more like 45 percent.”

Brewery news Canada, MB: Barn Hammer Brewing Company to open in Winnipeg on December 5
The co-owner of TNT Fenceworks, Tyler Birch, plans to open a microbrewery in Winnipeg on December 5. Birch is about to sign a lease on a building at 595 Wall St., Winnipeg, for his new venture, the Barn Hammer Brewing Company, Winnipeg Sun reported on May 31.

“I’ve always liked cooking and making stuff and I have been brewing my own beer. But I had no intention to become commercial with it, initially,” said Birch.

However, a recent visit to a microbrewery in Phoenix, Ariz., sparked interest in suds-making as a business.

“Compared to other cities, Winnipeg doesn’t have a lot of microbreweries,” said Birch. “Half Pints is really the only locally-owned brewery, so I’m not worried about competition.”

“They just changed the legislation allowing for tasting rooms and the building on Wall Street, Winnipeg, has a nice room in front where we can do that,” Birch said.

But there’s still a lot to do before December.

“The investment is substantial - heart-stopping substantial,” Birch said, estimating it at about C$750,000. “I’ve hired Brian Westcott who has commercial brewing experience. So, it’s just him and I, and my wife Sable. My wife is a graphic designer and she will be designing the labels and so on.”

Brewery news USA, CA: Palomar Brewing Company to join Carlsbad community
California has long been a big supplier of quality craft beer, with one of the biggest craft-breweries in the nation, Stone Brewing Co., Coast News blog reported on May 30.

Vista is home to more craft breweries per capita than any other city in the nation.

Yet neighbouring Carlsbad is home to just four breweries.

Two Carlsbad residents are hoping to change that with the opening of Palomar Brewing Company, on Loker Avenue West.

Ben Fairweather and Mike Stevenson are hoping to open a tasting room to cater to the surrounding businesses and hotels.

They see Carlsbad as a good opportunity because of the amount of residents that go to the surrounding cities to eat and drink.

“There is a leakage to other coastal communities,” Stevenson said.

They both agree that the interest has already been high. Fairweather said people in the nearby business community pop in, almost daily, to check the progress and find out when they can taste the beers.

Stevenson is the head brewer and has been home-brewing with his dad since he was a kid.

He went to Germany to intern at a brewery and learn more about traditional brewing.

“It helped me get a job locally,” Stevenson said.

He spent two years at Twisted Manzanita Brewing ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Dunbar Brewing to expand Santa Margarita production
In 2012, Santa Margarita’s Dunbar Brewing moved from a cramped space on El Camino Real, Santa Margarita, to a 1,600-square-foot, three-barrel brewhouse and pub. That new location gave owner and brewmaster Chris Chambers more room to expand on the brand he’s been building since 1997, The San Luis Obispo Tribune reported on June 2.

Just three years later, Dunbar is ready for another expansion and will open a separate 6,000-square-foot, 10-barrel brewhouse at 22815 El Camino Real, Santa Margarita, this month.

“We knew that brewing in the three-barrel brewhouse wasn’t going to be enough,” Chambers said.

So when a property just down the street from the pub opened up, Chambers jumped at the opportunity, investing about $200,000 in the new site.

The extra space has allowed Dunbar to install a new brewing system that Chambers designed. The new system will increase the brewery’s output from just a few hundred barrels of beer per year to between 3,000 and 4,000 barrels.

The brewery also plans to begin offering 22-ounce bottles of its four signature brews.

Chambers declined to disclose specific financial information but said Dunbar Brewing has seen an average of 15 percent growth in profits in the past year. With the additional space, the brewery hopes ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Petoskey Brewing to upgrade by the end of June
One of the oldest breweries in Emmet County, Michigan is getting a face lift just in time for the summer season, UpNorthLive.com reported on June 2.

Since March, the owners of Petoskey Brewing have invested about $1 million into renovations and new equipment.

"We’ve had a lot of support from the local community first and foremost," said Petoskey Brewing co-owner Patrick Dowd. "We have them to thank for being able to go through expansion. Our plan was to expand by year 5; here we are in year 3 doing that expansion and it’s entirely the result of our customer support."

The brewery was first built in 1898.

Dowd and his partners took ownership of the brewery in 2012.

The new beer processing tanks will allow the brewery to increase their output from 3,600 barrels a year to 5,500.

Dowd said that the renovations and new equipment will be fully installed by the end of June.

Brewery news USA, MI & VI: Final Gravity Brewing to become Richmond’s newest addition
Original Gravity Homebrew Supplies is opening a nanobrewery inside of its Lakeside Avenue store in Richmond, Henrico County, Richmond.com reported on June 2.

Final Gravity Brewing will have a different operating model from the Richmond region’s other craft breweries. A nanobrewery generally is a scaled-down microbrewery that produces beer in small batches.

“We’ll start out with two-barrel batches (62 gallons),” said Tony Ammendolia, owner of Original Gravity Homebrew.

“We won’t start selling beer until we have at least six beers ready, so it will most likely be at least six weeks from the time we get our ABC license” until opening day.

Ammendolia has been home brewing for more than 20 years, learning the craft firsthand. He’s been a business owner since 2011, growing his Lakeside Avenue home-brewing supplies store from a 1,000-square-foot shop to about 5,000 square feet.

On June 1, he received his approval from the federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.

His next step is getting approval from the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, which he said should take two to four weeks. After the approval, he will begin a brewing marathon to fill his eight fermenters in his existing business at 6118 Lakeside Ave, Richmond.

Ammendolia said he hopes his ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Moccasin Bend Brewing Co. closed taproom in St. Elmo
Moccasin Bend Brewing Co.'s taproom in St. Elmo is now closed, and owners are looking for a new location, according to the business' Facebook page, Nooga.com reported on June 2.

“We will be leaving our present location very soon, most likely at the end of the month. It is not our decision to leave St. Elmo or our location and we are saddened to do so. We will immediately begin seeking new locations and will keep you posted,” the Management of Moccasin Bend Brewing Company posted on April 24.

After that, a manager confirmed that the business would be moving from 4015 Tennessee Ave., in St. Elmo, although they hoped to maintain a presence in the area.

Brewery news Japan: Japan’s brewers extend their lines of non-alcoholic beer-like beverages
Ahead of the summer peak demand season, Japanese brewers are extending the product lines of nonalcoholic beer-like beverages that they claim offer healthful benefits, Jiji Press reported on June 2.

The popularity of such drinks is on the rise, although the beer market is shrinking amid the country’s falling birth rate.

Beer-makers aim to attract health-conscious consumers, stressing the supposed added value of their nonalcoholic beverages, such as blocking the absorption of fat.

Last week, Sapporo Breweries Ltd. launched Sapporo Plus, the first nonalcoholic beer-like beverage certified by the Consumer Affairs Agency as tokuho, a food for specified health uses.

The new beverage containing a dietary fiber called indigestible dextrin helps suppress the absorption of sugar in meals, according to the Sapporo Holdings Ltd. unit.

This month, rivals Kirin Brewery Co. and Asahi Breweries Ltd. are scheduled to launch similar beer-flavored, alcohol-free drinks.

Kirin’s Perfect Free and Asahi’s Style Balance both claim they reduce the absorption of sugar and fat.

Unlike Sapporo Plus, which has certification from the government, the two companies tout such health functions on their own responsibility under a new labeling system that was introduced in April for functional foods.

Suntory Beer Ltd., which sells All-Free, Japan’s most popular nonalcoholic beer, plans to launch a ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Barley varieties Irina and Talisman receive full approval for brewing
High-yielding barley varieties Irina and Talisman have received full approval for brewing from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD) in the UK, Farmers Weekly reported on May 29.

Irina from breeder KWS becomes the highest-yielding spring malting barley fully accepted by the industry. Likewise, Senova’s Talisman takes the industry’s winter malting barley top spot.

According to KWS value chain manager Dr Kirsty Richards, the new UK approval follows successful large-scale macro-malting and brewing tests carried out for the IBD by Molson Coors, Bairds Malt, Crisp Malting and Boortmalt.

“It comes after Irina’s acceptance from leading brewers on the continent last year, including Heineken, Carlsberg and Radeberger, who have already seen a significant commercial tonnage from farmers in France, Germany and Denmark.

“As a result, UK growers can be confident that it will readily find a premium market on the continent as well as on home soil,” she says.

Dr Richards points out that industry assessments confirmed Irina has a high water extract, ahead of Propino and Tipple and just behind Concerto.

“Irina is 6% higher yielding in Recommended List trials than the next best IBD-approved varieties and on par with the best feed-only varieties such as Shada.”

Newly approved winter malting barley Talisman is now the ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Coopers Brewery convinced Australia’s barley growers are entering a golden age
Australia’s barley growers are entering a golden age, according to Coopers quality manager Doug Stewart, with varieties boasting great yields and high quality, Farm Weekly reported on May 31.

Dr Stewart was a guest speaker at a recent Rural Media SA lunch, where he spoke about the importance of barley and malt grades to brewers, alongside Coopers Brewery managing director and chief brewer Tim Cooper, who gave a colourful history of the 153-year-old family business.

Coopers is the largest remaining Australian-owned brewery and last financial year produced a record 75.3 million litres of beer.

Dr Stewart has been with the company for six months, previously working for the Adelaide Malting Company, Joe White Maltings and then Cargill.

He said there was no magic answer on what barley variety growers should seed, but there was more opportunity now in the industry than ever before.

"Today's malting barley varieties are yielding better than some feed barley varieties," he said.

"That's an enormous upside for Australian barley growers, in that there is no longer that risk associated with growing a malting variety.

"Commander from the University of Adelaide is the highest-yielding malting barley at the moment and is very robust agronomically, while Latrobe from Intergrain is accredited and has a ...More info on site

Brewery news Ethiopia: Heineken launches Ethiopia’s first non-alcoholic beer
Heineken Breweries S.c. launches Buckler, its first non alcoholic beer in Ethiopia, 2Merkato.com reported on May 29.

Buckler 0.0% alcohol, as the label indicates, is brewed at Harar Brewery and will initially be available in Harar, Dire Dawa, and Addis Ababa.

The decision to launch a non-alcoholic beer, which is the first of its kind in Ethiopia, is based on the understanding that there are consumers who like the natural taste of beer but do not want to consume alcohol or do not want to consume alcohol at times when alcohol consumption is inappropriate. This gives Heineken Breweries S.c. the opportunity to excite its consumers with new and unique choices. The recommend retail price of Buckler 0.0% is 13 Ethiopian Birr and it will be available in major retail outlets.

Heineken has a long history with Africa. Already in 1900 Heineken was exporting beer to various African countries (Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia and Sierra Leone). The first brewery in DRC was established in 1923. For many years the business expanded across the continent and in 2011 the acquisition of Harar and Bedele Breweries in Ethiopia was made. In August 2014, the new Greenfield brewery in Kilinto, Addis Ababa became operational. Heineken Ethiopia's key ...More info on site

Brewery news Cambodia: Former Heineken beer distributor signs agreement to sell Corona beer
Cambodia’s former Heineken beer distributor has signed an agreement to become the exclusive partner of Corona beer in the Kingdom, on the heels of its dispute over Heineken branded-beer that has left fresh stock of the Dutch lager widely unavailable across the country, The Phnom Penh Post reported on June 2.

“We are very pleased to bring the most popular Mexican beer in the world to Cambodia,” said Attwood Import Export founder Lim Chivv Ho at a signing ceremony at the Intercontinental Hotel in Phnom Penh on May 29.

The agreement became effective on June 1.

A messy dispute erupted after Attwood lost the distribution rights for Heineken beer in December of last year to Cambodia Brewery Limited (CBL), a local brewery which has been fully bought out by Heineken over the years.

The dispute has since led to a shortage of Heineken beer in Cambodia, with restaurants, bars, and wholesalers having little luck purchasing new stock.

“We regret that Heineken is currently not widely available in the Cambodia market,” CBL, whose portfolio also includes Anchor and Tiger beers, said in a statement last week.

Attwood had been distributing Heineken for 17 years, and lamented the loss of the lucrative contract, saying in January that it ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Imported beer continues to increase its share at large discount stores
Imported brands continue to increase their share of total beer sales at large discount stores in South Korea, The Chosun Ilbo reported on June 01.

Homeplus said on May 31 that imports accounted for 40.2 percent of its total beer sales in the first five months of this year, up from 12.1 percent in 2009 and 32.8 percent last year. Other large discount stores including E-Mart reported similar sales ratios over the period.

According to the Korea Customs Office, beer imports grow by an average of more than 20 percent every year. Last year's sales were double the 2011 level.

Homeplus attributed the rise to lower prices and a wider choice of brands resulting from free-trade agreements with the U.S. and the European Union, and the overall popularity of low-alcohol beverages, among other factors.
