USA, IL: Illinois House passes bill allowing craft brewers to increase production
|
Legislation that proponents expect to boost Illinois’ beer production is headed to the governor’s desk after passing the House, fox2now.com reported on June 9.
The bill that passed the House 87-20 on June 9 allows breweries to make up to 120,000 barrels of beer per year. That is more than most breweries in the state currently produce. The brewers can produce that much beer while operating as many as three retail facilities, such as brewpubs and taprooms.
Current law limits brewers to 30,000 barrels of annual production if they own multiple types of breweries.
The legislation is the result of nearly a year of negotiation between craft brewers and businesses that distribute beer to bars, stores and restaurants.
Illinois Craft Brewers Guild president John Barley says there is a lot of excitement among brewers over the legislation.

Canada, AB: Craft brewers hope Alberta provincial government will update taxes and regulations for the brewing industry
|
Alberta’s craft beer makers are hoping the NDP government is planning changes to the way the province taxes and regulates the industry, Calgary Herald reported on June 9.
With the new government taking over just as the Alberta Liquor and Gaming Commission gets set to continue a review of the province’s regulatory regime started by the previous PC administration, industry representatives see an opportunity to address some long-standing issues surrounding taxation and red tape.
“We have a new government - hopefully they’ll have a new perspective,” said Greg Zeschuk, executive director of the Alberta Small Brewers Association.
The ASBA is made up of nearly 20 breweries across the province, including Village, Wild Rose and Big Rock in Calgary. To belong, a brewer must be independently owned and headquartered in Alberta, brew at least 90 per cent of its beer here and have an annual output of less than 70 million litres.
At the end of 2013, the AGLC removed minimum production quotas that barred small breweries from starting up in Alberta, which spurred a few new breweries to open their doors.
But Zeschuk said Alberta hasn’t created an environment for a vibrant industry to take root like it has in Ontario or neighbouring B.C., where

USA, MO: Six Row Brewing closes, anticipates move
|
Six Row Brewing Company released the following statement on June 6: "Six Row Brewing Company will be closing its operations at 3690 Forest Park Ave., St. Louis, on June 6 in anticipation of making a move. After operating for more than five years at the historic Falstaff Plant No. 1, in St. Louis, the company has decided to pursue a change of venue."
Head brewer and co-owner Evan Hiatt wasn't immediately available for comment, but an employee at Six Row confirmed the news.
While the taproom is closing, Hiatt said there will be "future plans for the brewery."
Six Row opened in December 2009 at 3690 Forest Park Avenue, St. Louis.
The brewery celebrated its fifth anniversary last December.
"It's been a wild ride," Hiatt said at that time. "The (craft-beer) landscape has changed dramatically.”

USA, IL: Horse Thief Hollow to use $25K award for production expansion
|
Neil Byers, owner of Horse Thief Hollow in Beverly, won $25,000 on June 9, DNAinfo reported the same day.
Byers, a Beverly native and resident, won the 2015 James Tyree Emerging Business Leadership Award from the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce. The award was presented at the chamber's annual meeting at Navy Pier.
In the wake of the award presentation, the owner of the brew pub at 10426 S. Western Ave., Beverly, said he plans to use the proceeds to expand his brewery and explore distribution of several seasonal brews.
The $50,000 expansion will require Byers to replace all five of his five-barrel brewing tanks with 10-barrel tanks. The larger equipment will give Horse Thief Hollow about 1,000 kegs per year to distribute.
As for the chamber of commerce award, he was surprised to be named the winner on June 9. Byers was one of four finalists, one of which was also a finalist on NBC's "Shark Tank" and received an offer from celebrity judge Mark Cuban.
"I think what put me over the top was community involvement," Byers said.
The award recognized a high-growth small business that "best represents the spirit and values of the late Chicagoland Chairman and business leader James Tyree," Byers said.
"Neil's genuine

USA, WI: Rockhound Brewing Co. may launch soon in Madison
|
Rockhound Brewing Co. hopes to launch soon in former Lane’s Bakery location in Madison, Madison.com reported on June 7.
Nate Warnke, a Madison native and homebrewer for the last 10 years, has proposed a 4,000-square-foot brewpub at 444 S. Park St., Madison, that will brew 15 to 20 barrels of beer a week.
If the plan meets the approval of the city’s Alcohol License Review Committee on June 17 and the City Council on July 7, Warnke believes he could open by December or January and become the latest addition to the state’s growing craft beer industry.
“I focused on this part of the city from day one,” Warnke said. “I want to make it an asset to the neighbourhood. It’s not the kind of bar that has been on Park Street, Madison, in the past.”
Wisconsin ranks ninth nationally in craft beer production and in 2014 produced 850,874 barrels of craft beer. Nationally, craft brewers produced 21.7 million barrels in 2014, a 17.6 percent increase over 2013. That represents an 11 percent share of the overall beer market, according the Colorado-based Brewers Association.
Brewpubs, as a sector, also continue to grow in popularity. In 2014, 159 brewpubs opened nationally to bring the total to

USA, IL: 4204 Main Street Brewing Co. to expand microbrewery in Belleville
|
Belleville microbrewery 4204 Main Street Brewing Co. is expanding its brewing operations, Belleville News-Democrat reported on June 7.
Business owner Todd Kennedy said he is building onto the east side of the existing building at 4204 W. Main St., Belleville, which will increase the microbrewery’s production from 1,000 barrels to 6,000 barrels a year. Construction is expected to be finished by next month.
Kennedy also said the microbrewery will soon be adding a canning line that will help his business distribute 4204 Main Street Brewing Co.’s beer to grocery and convenience stores.

USA, IA: Reclaimed Rails Brewing Company to open in Bondurant by October
|
The nearly 70-year-old building on 101 Main Street in Bondurant will now be home to eastern Polk County's first microbrewery run by four local partners, three members comprising the management team and one head brewer with nearly 18 years of experience, DesMoinesRegister.com reported on June 9.
Reclaimed Rails Brewing Company at 101 Main St, Bondurant is set to open its doors to the public in late September.
The brewery's president Jeremy Boka said one theme kept coming to the forefront when the team first started discussion about a craft beer venture: Reclamation. Positioned near the Des Moines metro's bike trail connector to Chichaqua Valley Trail, the company plays off the idea of the rail beds reclaimed and repurposed from utility to recreation.
"The building is reclaimed, the equipment is reclaimed, nearly everything we have inside the building is reclaimed," Boka said. "We really wanted to focus on reclaiming and keeping the craft brew aesthetic."
The company started looking for a home to launch its inaugural brew and found the Legion hall in Bondurant, which itself had been reclaimed.
Even the head brewer, Dave Coy, was reclaimed from his position as the head brewer for Raccoon River Brewery Company once the bar and restaurant closed in

USA, SC: Legal Remedy Brewery to open in Rock Hill
|
Rock Hill attorney Chad McGowan and his partners decided to take their passion for beer from their kitchens or basements, where they crafted home brews, to a larger public arena, The Herald reported on June 7.
“There was no one here feeding our habit for good beer,” McGowan said. If no one was feeding their habit, there must be others in need, they reasoned.
Hence, Legal Remedy Brewing was started in 2009 to legally sell their best beers to retailers.
This fall, Legal Remedy will take another big step: meeting all the state and local rules to sell beer at a pub on Oakland Avenue near downtown Rock Hill.
They are converting the former Williams auto dealership into a brewery, restaurant and outdoor beer garden.
In the former service bays is a large array of small and large stainless steel tanks and accompanying plumbing. That’s where brewmaster Mike Krail practices his craft.
McGowan insists Legal Brewery will focus on bringing quality beer to the area and offering a “genuine” beer-drinking experience, not to make money. Bad-tasting beer, he insists, will be used to water the lawn or the hops garden.
The S.C. Brewers Guild estimates the value of state-made beer is now more than $275 million, and

USA, TN: Fat Bottom Brewery to relocate to The Nations from East Nashville in a major expansion
|
Fat Bottom Brewing, which opened on Main Street in East Nashville back in 2012, has outgrown those digs and plans to move to The Nations neighbourhood of West Nashville, Nashville Scene reported on June 9.
The company announced that it has purchased property at 800 44th Ave. N., West Nashville, and the brewery will move to a 16,000-square foot-facility there.
“Since the brewery opened in 2012, we have grown steadily at a pace beyond my expectation, and we are now at maximum capacity in our current location,” Ben Bredesen, company president and founder, says in the release. “This move will allow the business to continue growing.”
The retail operations at Fat Bottom Brewery will also expand.
Bredesen called the move “bittersweet,” adding: “I am sad to move the brewery from the neighbourhood that I live in and that has helped us grow so quickly. Our new location is based in a neighbourhood though, which is important to the business and to me personally. I hope folks in The Nations will embrace the brewery and taproom in the same way that East Nashville did.”
The company aims to open the new facility in January.

Ireland: Irish Malt Growers association aiming at becoming an active stakeholder organisation within malting barley sector
|
Irish Malt Growers (IMG) will become an active stakeholder organisation within the malting barley sector, according to the new pressure group’s Chairman Tom Cushen quoted as saying by Agriland.
“And this means having an active input into the setting of future contract prices,” he said.
“Members have not yet decided on how this matter will be approached. Our primary objective is to attract as many malting barley growers into our ranks as possible.”
Cushen confirmed that the new organisation has already attracted 180 members from counties Wexford, Laois, Carlow and Kildare.
“Our aim is to grow this figure to around 330 over the coming months, which will work out at around two thirds of the malting barley growers in Ireland,” he said.
Cushen said that malting barley prices for this year are ranging between €160/t and €170/t.
“In reality, growers need to be getting around €200/t in order to remain viable,” he said.
