Brewery news USA, WA: Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act aims at cutting taxes on craft beer
After years of failed and often opposing attempts in Congress to cut the beer excise tax, big and small brewers have gotten behind a bill that would benefit both, STLtoday.com reported on June 18.

It doesn't guarantee anything in a Congress that has struggled for years with tax reform and is reticent to do anything to add to the deficit. But for the first time, big brewers and the rapidly growing craft beer industry and - potentially - the distributors who haul their beer to consumers, could be working for the same bill.

“Huge breakthrough,” said Dan Kopman, co-founder of St. Louis’s largest craft brewer, Schlafly Beers, who said cuts in the legislation, would spark a robust craft-brew industry ready for greater growth.

James A. McGreevy III, president and CEO of the Beer Institute, which represents big brewers and importers, agreed.

“When you have the two main trade groups for beer brewers in the United States working together to pass tax reform and tax relief, you have a pretty good shot at it,” he said.

He was referring to the Brewers Association, which represents Schafly Beer and other small and independent craft brewers, and McGreevy’s group. Both have declared support for the “Craft Beverage Modernization ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN & WI: Lucid Brewing acquired American Sky Brewing Co.
Minnetonka-based Lucid Brewing has bought American Sky Brewing Co., a craft beer company based in Hudson, Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal reported on June 18.

Lucid Brewing announced the deal on June 15. Lucid Brewing’s co-founder Jon Messier and American Sky Brewing co-founder Molly Harris did not disclose the terms of the deal.

The June 1 sale included the brand and business assets but no real estate, said American Sky General Manager Kati Schenz.

The two companies will maintain separate brands.

Harris and her husband Greg founded American Sky Brewing in 2011, then known as Hudson Brewing Co. It has brewing operation that produces about 2,000 barrels a year, Schenz said.

The deal with Lucid Brewing will give American Sky Brewing broader distribution and more production capacity.

American Sky Brewing will add Minnesota distribution under Lucid Brewing’s ownership, Schenz said. The company's brewing operations will move to Lucid Brewing's facility in Minnetonka. Schenz said they hope to begin selling in Minnesota by the end of the year.

“Since we began in 2011, our focus has been on production and distribution,” Lucid Brewing’s co-owner Jon Messier said in a prepared statement. “The American Sky Brewing’s team is talented and we are excited to work together to improve ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Wedgewood Brewing Company to open in downtown Middlebury by the end of the year
Several area breweries have opened recently in Michiana, and more are about to open - including Wedgewood Brewing, which will be located at 106 S. Main St. in downtown Middlebury, Flavor 574 reported on June 18.

Wedgewood Brewing’s owner/brewer Chris Higgins is a farm boy from Iowa who moved to the area in 1988. He wasn’t much of a beer drinker at the time, but at some point while working on a project with his brother-in-law, Chris was handed a beer in a bag.

Together with his brother-in-law Higgins, he brewed a clone of Stone Arrogant Bastard (American strong ale, 7.2 percent ABV), and that was pretty much all the inspiration that he needed.

Chris said he began building his own equipment and changed over to all-grain brewing. Brewing soon took over most of his house. He bottled for about a year and then began kegging his beer.

Wedgewood Brewery will be a wholesale brewery.

Chris’ brew house is a one-barrel system (meaning recipes of about 33 gallons at a time), and his goal is to be open this year.

Higgins is still waiting on state and federal brewing permits. These projects sometimes take longer than planned, with many inspections and other unexpected situations.

Brewery news USA, OH: Rivertown Brewing to expand operations in Lockland
Rivertown Brewing is set to undergo a major expansion that will dramatically reshape the look and scope of the brewery, WCPO reported on June 17.

The Lockland-based brewery will take over more than 8,000 square feet of its current facility on August 1.

The brewery’s founder and owner Jason Roeper said he plans on buying a new 50 bbl. brewhouse to ramp up overall production and a small 3-bbl. system to do test batches or specialty beers for accounts. Once the new equipment is ready, Rivertown Brewing will sell its current system.

The brewery will also be installing new 100 bbl. fermenters that have already been purchased.

“We will keep a couple 60 bbl. fermenters for one-off batches but with the new 50 bbl. brewhouse, there’s no sense in keeping the smaller vessels,” Roeper said.

The team doesn't have a set timeframe for the expansion after they take ownership on August 1. However, Roeper’s goal is to have the project complete by the end of 2016.

Brewery news USA, PA: Forest & Main Brewing Co. to expand beer production in Amber
Changes coming to Forest & Main Brewing Co. will mean more space, more beers and a new menu for customers, Montgomery Newspapers reported on June 17.

“It will give us basically everything we don’t have in our current location,” co-owner Daniel Endicott said.

Though no definite plans for the tasting room have been drawn up, Endicott said, of the 3,000-square-foot space, about half will be open to customers and include 20 to 30 barstools plus a few tables.

The expansion will also mean more beers for Forest & Main Brewing’s customers to enjoy. Endicott said about half the space will be devoted to brewing, with additional fermenters and barrels for aging beer.

Forest & Main Brewing had always planned to expand, according to Endicott. Almost immediately after opening there was no spare room at the brewpub.

He said the space next door had been available that whole time and he and fellow owner Gerard Olson kept abreast of any movement there.

They signed a lease for the space in September and have been using it as storage space, Endicott said, but now they are ready to renovate and make it functional.

Endicott said Johnny Della Polla has stepped in as director of operations. Della Polla has had ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NV: IMBIB Brewery to open in Reno on June 27
Much like its name, the brewing process at IMBIB has an old world association. Before the invention of modern brewing equipment most people used barrels. Co-Founder Matt Johnson says aging beer in a barrel is much different than the standard process that most breweries use today, KOLO8abc reported on June 18.

"You're letting go of control over the beer when you put it in a barrel, because what happens in that barrel is the barrel breathes. So, it lets oxygen into the beer and it lets other things out of the beer," says Johnson.

Barrel aging can be used to make sour beer or to create more complex flavours.

"Much like wine, the beer will pick up whatever is in that barrel. So, we may start with a white wine barrel and the beer that's going to come out of there is going to have this nice, bright acidity from the white wine that was sitting on that wood previously," says Johnson.

"Rarely do you get a beer out of a barrel that is exactly what you want. So the art form is blending that beer with maybe another barrel aged beer that has a different character to it," he added.

Since the owners at ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Oriental Brewery launches premium wheat beer
Oriental Brewery (OB) on June 17 launched a new premium wheat beer produced through a traditional German brewing process, The Korea Times reported.

The brand new product named Premier OB Weizen is the first premium beer OB developed in coordination with brewmasters at its parent company Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev). Weizen means wheat beer in German.

The product was made only with wheat malts and hops harvested in Germany. It was brewed with high-quality yeasts selected jointly by brewmasters of the two companies, which resulted in creating German beer's typical smoky color and rich flavor, the company explained.

"Premier OB Weizen is the result of a lot of research, product development and analysis," OB CEO Frederico Freire said during the product's launching ceremony in downtown Seoul. "This will open a new chapter in Korea's beer history."

"Premier OB Weizen boasts traditional wheat flavors by following Germany's Bayern style wheat beers," he said. "World's famous brewmasters worked very hard with OB to create weizen beer that fits the taste of Korean consumers."

It has an alcohol content of 5 percent, slightly higher than 4.5 percent of OB's best-selling brand Cass. A 355-millimeter can of Premium OB Weizen is priced at 1,490 won ($1.33) and the ...More info on site

Barley news Russia: Deputy Prime Minister hopes wheat export tax will be temporary
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich said on June 19 he hoped a new Russian wheat export tax will be a short-term anti-crisis measure, Reuters reported.

The new tariff, to be launched from July 1, is intended to stop exports surging if the rouble drops steeply, the Russian government said when it signed the order in May.

Russia, a leading wheat exporter to North Africa and the Middle East, has battled with a volatile local currency since mid-2014, due to weak oil prices and Western sanctions over Moscow's role in the Ukraine crisis.

"(The wheat duty) is an anti-crisis measure and temporary. I hope it will be short term," Dvorkovich said at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

"In this difficult period, when the possible consequences of exchange rate fluctuations are still not clear, we have to agree on this measure to prevent a sharp rise in prices on the domestic grain market," he said.

The rouble weakened on June 19, correcting downwards after two days of strong performance driven by demand for roubles to pay local taxes.

Uncertainty over the currency's performance and how the floating tax formula will be calculated is slowing grain trade activity, traders say, and could threaten profits on advance contracts ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Carlsberg to divest former Tetley Brewery site in Leeds
Carlsberg Group is reportedly planning to divest the former Tetley Brewery site in Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK, for £35 mln, Drinks Business Review reported on June 18.

Closed and demolished in 2012, the Tetley Brewery old headquarters were spread over 22-acres in the city's South Bank. This site was later converted into an art gallery.

The decision to sell the site comes as the Leeds City Council intends to transform the South Bank area into a community.

Carlsberg UK spokesman told The Yorkshire Post: "Regardless of any future sale and redevelopment of the site, it is our intention to retain an existing operation in the local area.

"We hope to be able to announce the successful purchaser prior to the end of 2015."

The company, till date, has received interest from 11 potential buyers.

The bidders, which include Leeds City Council, Asda and Ikea as well as other property developers and investors, are expected to submit their bids by 21 July 2015.

A company spokesman said: "Five years on, we have commenced a process to select a purchaser for the site who will be able to take forward the site's redevelopment.

"We recognise the potential of the site and its important location within the Leeds South Bank area."
