Brewery news USA, IA: Iowa’s craft beer industry is rising
Iowans’ thirst for craft beer – especially among younger drinkers - has brewed up more than $100 million in economic activity for the state, according to findings of a study prepared for the Iowa Wine and Beer Promotion Board.

Mike Lipsman, Harvey Siegelman and Dan Otto of the Strategic Economics Group conducted research indicating the economic impact of Iowa’s craft beer industry topped $100.2 million in 2014, generated 1,520 jobs and increased personal income by nearly $42 million, mostly for food and drinking establishments, breweries and retail businesses.

“The craft beer industry is one of Iowa’s emerging manufacturing segments,” Megan McKay, a member of the Iowa Wine and Beer Promotion Board, said in a statement included in the study’s release by the state Economic Development Authority on June 18.

“Craft beer drinkers represent a wide range of ages and interests, meaning the industry will continue to grow, enhancing the state’s economy and making jobs for our residents,” McKay said.

According to the study, beer production by Iowa’s craft breweries and brew pubs is projected to increase from the 2014 level of 40,786 barrels to more than 146,000 barrels by 2019. Also, the in-state consumption of craft beer can be expected to increase over the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: New brewery ready to open in downtown Middleton
Kenan and Kenneth Porter are confident the Heritage Trail will be well-travelled by thirsty tourists on the stretch that goes through Middletown. On Cottage Street, Middletown, in a building that formerly housed the Clemson Bros. hacksaw company, their craft brewery is coming to life, The Epoch Times reported on June 23.

Clemson Bros. Brewery does not expect in the near future to rival the Brooklyn Brewery, a dominant craft brewery in New York. But Kenan Porter has big plans for the buildings he owns in downtown Middletown.

In 2014 the Porters’ Heritage Restoration Properties LLC bought the facility and several nearby buildings. Father Kenneth and son Kenan are now renovating the site into a craft brewery. Kenan Porter says he expects to open the brewery sometime before the end of the summer.

Brewery news USA, CO & NC: New Belgium Brewing to increase production for its 25th anniversary
New Belgium Brewing Co. has transformed from a basement brewery to USA’s fourth-largest craft brewer, USA Today reported on June 21.

And as the Fort Collins, Colorado-based brewery approaches its 25th year, the employee-owned company has more expansion on the horizon. New Belgium Brewing is expected to open an Asheville, North Carolina, brewing facility by the end of 2015. CEO and co-founder Kim Jordan said construction, which started in 2014, is about two-thirds complete.

"I'm often asked by people if I had any idea New Belgium Brewing would grow to its size — the answer is 'Of course not,' " said Jordan, who opened the brewery in 1991 with former husband, Jeff Lebesch.

"I remember in the very beginning Jeff was interviewed about New Belgium Brewing and said 'If we can just grow this to 90 cases a week, I think we can make it.' In hindsight, of course, that's very funny."

In 2014, New Belgium Brewing reported it produced 945,000 barrels of beer. It's distributed to more than 35 states.

According to the Brewers Association, D.G. Yuengling and Son of Pennsylvania, Boston Beer Co. of Massachusetts, and Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. of California were the only U.S.-based craft breweries to sell more than New ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Kennett Brewing Co. to open in Kennett Square
Kennett Square’s newest brew pub - Kennett Brewing Co. - is days from opening, and Mark Osborne, the self-confessed obsessive who’s a big part of the driving force behind the Kennett Brewing Company, is everywhere at once during the final scramble to get everything ready, Southern Chester County Weeklies reported on June 21.

Osborne threw himself into craft brewing the way he evidently does everything else, with a great deal of effort, energy, diligence, and focus on detail. “I abhor nothing more than inattentiveness,” he says.

When not otherwise occupied, he read about beer, and sought more information online and wherever else he could, going “from not being a brewer to not bad at all in maybe three or four months.”

Osborne kept striving for excellence. “I became obsessed with reproducing that Fegley’s ESB,” he says, and after four years, he felt he accomplished that. He brewed continually, estimating he’s produced about 500 batches in the last 10 years—he “stopped counting after 400 and something,” he says.

And in recent years, friends started encouraging the Osbornes to open a brew pub.

Mary Hutchins of Historic Kennett Square and Brant Kucera, the borough manager at the time, were enthusiastic, and real estate agent Andy ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Fibonacci Brewing to open in Mt. Healthy in early July
The Queen City’s brewing rebirth is bubbling up yet again as a new nanobrewery is set to open in Mount Healthy, WCPO reported on June 22.

Owner Bob Bollas and his wife, Betty, said Fibonacci Brewing will open in early July. The brewery is at 1445 Compton Road, Mt. Healthy. The pair had hoped to open by the end of June but had to wait for final state and city approval.

The couple said it chose the “Fibonacci Brewing” name because of a love of nature and science. Bollas said the name ties in to his math and science background, and his wife’s love of nature and gardening.

The couple is opening the facility with a 1-barrel brewhouse and expects to make about 300-pints worth of beer per batch. Bollas joked that it could be “314” pints depending on the day and demand.

The brewery has three 2-barrel fermenters and a brite tank (a vessel used during the carbonation of beer.). They brew two batches for each beer to fill the fermenters.

Bollas hopes to brew about four barrels per week and should produce almost 100 barrels in the first six months.

“If we’re seeing that producing four barrels per week allows us to open ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MT: Lolo Peak Brewing Co. to open brewpub Missoula
The owners of Lolo Peak Brewing Co. will build an 8,000-square-foot, two-story brewpub and restaurant in the heart of Missoula at the Old Sawmill District, close to Ogren Allegiance Park and the Clark Fork River, The Missoulian reported on June 23.

“Nearly everything is set in place, except for the investors,” said Patrick Offen, who co-owns Lolo Peak with Al Zepeda. “We do have some investors interested. Once we get them on board, we will literally be able to start being able to break ground this fall.”

The brewery will be just north of Wyoming Street and the new Polleys Square condominium development that breaks ground on June 23, between the sidewalk and the creek in Silver Park, Lolo.

The building will be reminiscent of the spacious, sunlit Lolo location.

“There really isn’t a building like it in Missoula right now,” Offen said. “It’s a really open, rustic, Montana-Western atmosphere.“

Brewery news USA, CA: Westfax Brewing to open in Colfax by the beginning of 2016
A new craft-beer maker, Westfax Brewing, plans to open in 3,600 square feet of space next door to the Mexican restaurant Casa Bonita, Colfax, Westword reported on June 23.

“We’ll be able to sit on our patio and watch people coming and going,” says Westfax owner Anthony Martuscello, who hopes that Casa Bonita’s adult customers will use the brewery as a pre- or post-party spot. “We’ll be happy to help parents, or anyone else, get their beer fix.”

Martuscello had been looking for space up and down Colfax (his original name for the brewery was Grand Avenue Brewing, playing off a nickname for Colfax, before he changed it to avoid a trademark conflict), but was sold on Lamar Station when Broad Street told him that Casa Bonita attracts 500,000 new customers per year.

Originally from New York State, Martuscello is an industrial engineer who moved to Colorado about five years ago. He hopes to take possession of the space in August. He’s aiming to open by the end of 2015, but says a more realistic estimate is early 2016.

Martuscello, who has been home-brewing for six years, says he plans to hire a head brewer to operate the seven-barrel brewing system and to ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Carlsberg launches zero-alcohol Carlsberg
Carlsberg UK has announced the launch of Carlsberg’s new 0.0% ABV lager which is being introduced in bottles in the on-trade, Bar Magazine reported on June 22.

The beer is designed to retain the taste of the brand’s traditional lager, made with the natural ingredients of hops, malt and water, but is completely free of alcohol.

Available in 275ml bottles, it follows Carlsberg UK’s launch in the UK of other alcohol-free lagers San Miguel 0.0% and San Miguel 0.0% Limon.

It comes during a boom in the alcohol-free beer category which is now worth £41million in the UK, according to research group Nielsen. Carlsberg UK believes it offers a “huge opportunity” for licensees to capitalise on, particularly in the run-up to the summer when beer sales spike.

David Scott, director of brands and insight at Carlsberg UK, said: “Insight shows us that drinkers are increasingly looking to find alternatives for when alcohol may not be a suitable option but still want the satisfaction of a great-tasting beer, and we’re confident that Carlsberg 0.0% delivers on these key factors.

“In addition to this, expansion of our lower- and no-alcohol portfolio reflects our commitment to working with government to help create a responsible drinking environment by providing ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Sapporo Breweries files protest over authorities’ refusal to give it tax refund
Japan’s Sapporo Breweries Ltd. filed a protest over national tax authorities’ earlier decision to refuse the brewery’s request for a tax refund, The Japan Times reported on June 23.

The beer maker lodged the protest with regional tax authorities in four prefectures and Hokkaido.

The authorities rejected in April refunding ¥11.5 billion ($93.7 million) that Sapporo claimed to have overpaid over revamping its beer-like drink Goku Zero last year, although they did not reveal the reason for the decision.

Japan’s fourth-biggest brewery had voluntarily paid the money in additional liquor tax after the authorities requested last June data on the production of Goku Zero, which was then classified as a third-category beer, a drink taxed at lower rates than regular beers.

Sapporo relaunched the product as “happoshu” low-malt beer, which carries a higher tax rate than third-category beer. The ¥11.5 billion represents the difference between the two categories.

But the company later verified the product as third-category beer on its own and requested the refund in January. Sapporo continued to sell it as a third-category product for about a year.

Brewery news Thailand: Thai Asia Pacific Breweries against imposing ban on alcohol sale within 300 m of university and college campuses
Thai Asia Pacific Breweries (TAP), the brewer of Heineken, Tiger and Cheers beers, lashed out at the proposal to impose the ban on alcohol sale within 300 metres of university and college campuses, Thai Visa News reported on June 23.

“TAP believes that this proposal is both ill-conceived and unnecessary,” it said in a statement.

It said that the proposal was ill-conceived because it assumes that underage drinking can be addressed by moving the point of sale when underage individuals will simply find another place to purchase alcohol.

It added that the new law was unnecessary because there are already appropriate laws in place that prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages to individuals under the age of 20.

“It is not a question of needing new laws, but rather enforcing the laws that are already in place,” it said.

It continued that the move will negatively impact consumers who have the right to purchase alcohol, merchants who have the right to sell alcohol, and the government who will have to task valuable resources enforcing an unnecessary law.

It added that the authorities should strictly enforce existing laws at retail outlets and entertainment venues that violate the law. It also urged the authorities to consider increasing the ...More info on site
