Brewery news World: Beer prices index shows cheapest beer in Asia can be found in Delhi
The cheapest beer in Asia can apparently be found in Delhi and the most expensive in Hong Kong. A travel search engine focused on Europe, GoEuro, recently compiled an index of beer prices across 75 cities, including 12 in Asia (13, if Moscow is included). The index encompasses both supermarket and bar prices, basing supermarket prices on the average across five imports and one local brew and bar prices off the same beers served in three hotel chains. Far from comprehensive, the index is still interesting, given the surge in global beer consumption is driven by Asia (as well as Africa).

According to the 2014 annual Kirin Beer University Report worldwide beer consumption rose in 2013, the 28th year of consecutive growth. Asia consumed 4.8 percent more beer in 2013 than it did in 2012 and holds 34.8 percent of the global beer market. China, alone, holds a 24 percent share of the market, double that of the United States.

Overall, the cheapest spots (average between bar & supermarket) were, as can be expected, in Europe – Kraków, Kiev, and Bratislava topped the list – but Delhi came in fifth and Ho Chi Minh City in sixth. A beer at a bar ...More info on site

Brewery news Singapore: With new liquor laws limiting alcohol sales, retailers and coffee shops hope non-alcoholic beer might woo back customers
With alcohol sales taking a hit lately due to new liquor laws in Singapore, some retailers and coffee shops are selling non-alcoholic beer in a bid to woo back customers, AsiaOne reported on June 29. Convenience store chain 7-Eleven, for instance, has been selling Asahi Dry Zero to mitigate the loss in sales resulting from new rules banning retail sales of alcohol after 10.30pm. These took effect in April.

While Asahi Dry Zero has similar packaging to regular beers under the Japanese brand, it is a beer that contains no alcohol.

A few coffee shops at drinking hot spot Geylang - where the ban on retail sales of alcohol start from 7pm, like Little India - have also introduced alcohol-free beer.

Meanwhile, Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) Singapore, the distributor of Tiger Beer in Singapore, has been testing a similar product here - Tiger Maxx - since late last year.

These products are considered beer because they are usually made with the same basic ingredients - water, hops and malt - which go through a similar fermentation process, before the alcohol is removed.

Rene de Monchy, head of marketing at APB Singapore, said the non-alcoholic beer category is growing faster than the beer category.

He said: "We ...More info on site

Barley news Nigeria: Sorghum malting plants investors worried by removal of embargo on barley malt and barley concentrates import
Nigerian investors in sorghum malting plants are currently closing shops owing to removal of embargo on barley malt and barley concentrates used in brewing beer and malt drinks, which now attracts five percent import duty and are being imported to the detriment of sorghum-based malt extract and sorghum malting, Business Day reported on June 29. The current waivers given to barley malt and barley concentrates imported in Nigeria from Europe, according to a section of investors and producers of sorghum malting and sorghum-based malt extract, mean that thousands of workers in the farming, processing and storage segments of the sorghum value-chain could lose jobs. Speaking on the current economic challenges facing the industry as a result of the five percent waiver on imported barley malt and barley concentrates, Sudhansu Sinha, managing director, Food, Agro and Allied Industries Limited in Sango-Otta, Ogun state, said the waiver given to importers of brewing raw-materials would surely affect sorghum malting plants and the country’s economy. Sinha disclosed that more than half of workforce in Food, Agro and Allied Industries Limited has been paid off and the plant shut down due to the waiver, saying that this has given leading brewers in the country the ...More info on site

Barley news USA: Briess Malting increasing barley storage capacity in Ralston, Wyoming
Barley storage capacity is increasing at the Briess malt barley facility just outside of Ralston, Wyoming with two new 750,000 bushel bins to increase total onsite storage to 3.8 million bushels, Powell Tribune reported on June 30.

Once the two new bins are completed, the site will have four 750,000-bushel bins on top of their original eight 100,000-bushel bins.

Before it was owned by Briess, the eight original bins were completed in 1993 and the first two larger bins were completed in 2008.

“All eight can fit into one of these new bins,” said Rick Redd, Regional manager for Wyoming Barley Operations.

During harvest, Briess will dump out 5,000 truckloads of barley and load out 500-600 railcars, he said.

“These two (new) bins will reduce the number of railcars and that will be a big help,” Redd said.

Instead of 22 or 23 trains, they will only need to send out eight since more can be stored on-site and the rest can be shipped later to either Minneapolis for storage, or Wisconsin for malting and roasting, he said.

Part of the reason Briess is expanding their storage is to secure a consistent supply of high quality barley for malting and roasting malts for brewing. In addition to ...More info on site
