Brewery news UK & USA, OH: BrewDog to open North American headquarters and production centre in Canal Winchester
Popular Scottish-based craft brewery, BrewDog is set to open its North American headquarters and first production facility outside the United Kingdom on 42 acres in Canal Winchester, Ohio, Area Development Online reported on June 29.

BrewDog’s investment in the brewing facility in the Columbus Region will total $30.4 million, including the construction of a 100,000 square foot facility in Canal Winchester, to be completed by August 2016. BrewDog plans the Canal Winchester facility to be the main brewing site for all BrewDog’s USA beer production, according to city officials.

“The people of Ohio have absolutely bowled us over with their enthusiasm, passion for beer and warm welcome! Their reaction has been incredible, and confirms we have made the right choice with where we’ll lay the foundations for our American home,” James Watt, co-founder of BrewDog, said.

The launch of BrewDog USA will initially serve the U.S. market with potential to export to other countries, producing more than 85,200 barrels in its first year of production, and increasing capacity in coming years to reach 852,000 barrels.

As an incentive, City of Canal Winchester will support the project with a 15 year, 100% property tax exemption on the value of the building improvements, an incentive ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Lake Charlevoix Brewing Co. opened its doors in Charlevoix
Lake Charlevoix Brewing opened a new brewpub and craft brewery in Charlevoix, Nwmichigan reported on June 29. The Lake Charlevoix Brewing Company is now open at 111 Bridge Park Drive (next to the Keweenaw Star and Beaver Island Boat Company) , Charlevoix, overlooking Round Lake. The brewery is running a five-barrel made-in-Michigan system purchased from Psycho Brew in Greenville. It's a new endeavour from Rich Bergmann, Adam Engelman, Aaron Hagen, and Phil Parr, the founders and owners of its other neighbour, the Bridge Street Tap Room. "It was extremely important for us to make our investment in a company that is rooted in Michigan and utilizes American-made stainless steel," says Bergmann. "Equipment of this calibre helps us to brew beer of the utmost quality."

Barley news USA: Briess Malting increasing barley storage capacity in Ralston, Wyoming
Barley storage capacity is increasing at the Briess malt barley facility just outside of Ralston, Wyoming with two new 750,000 bushel bins to increase total onsite storage to 3.8 million bushels, Powell Tribune reported on June 30.

Once the two new bins are completed, the site will have four 750,000-bushel bins on top of their original eight 100,000-bushel bins.

Before it was owned by Briess, the eight original bins were completed in 1993 and the first two larger bins were completed in 2008.

“All eight can fit into one of these new bins,” said Rick Redd, Regional manager for Wyoming Barley Operations.

During harvest, Briess will dump out 5,000 truckloads of barley and load out 500-600 railcars, he said.

“These two (new) bins will reduce the number of railcars and that will be a big help,” Redd said.

Instead of 22 or 23 trains, they will only need to send out eight since more can be stored on-site and the rest can be shipped later to either Minneapolis for storage, or Wisconsin for malting and roasting, he said.

Part of the reason Briess is expanding their storage is to secure a consistent supply of high quality barley for malting and roasting malts for brewing. In addition to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Hi-Wire Brewing to open a new brewery in Asheville on July 25
Asheville's Hi-Wire Brewing will open its big new "Big Top" production brewery on July 25 with a colourful circus-like party, Asheville Citizen-Times reported on June 26.

The $3 million brewery at 2 Huntsman Place, Asheville, is on the edge of Biltmore Village behind the Appalachian Vintner beer store.

“The new 30-barrel brewhouse will greatly boost Hi-Wire Brewing's production from the current 5,000-6,000 barrels annually to as much as 55,000 barrels. A new bottling line will fill up to 150 bottles a minute,” spokeswoman Abby Dickinson said. “Employment is also increasing with the brewing, adding 16 new workers to Hi-Wire Brewing's staff,” Dickinson said.

“The current Hi-Wire Brewing’s space at 197 Hilliard Avenue, Asheville, will remain in business making one-off and experimental beers, while the new brewery will do the core brands,” Dickinson said. Hi-Wire Brewing is one of three production breweries under construction in Asheville.

Brewery news USA, GA & SC: Service Brewing Co. to expand in Savannah, South Carolina
Service Brewing Co. plans to begin distributing its craft beers in the South Carolina on July 1, Charlotte Business Journal reported on June 26.

That Savannah, Ga.-based brewery is veteran-owned.

It plans to introduce its beers through special events in Raleigh and Charlotte, as well as Charleston and Beaufort County, S.C. The brewery said in a news release that it plans to release its beers across both states.

Service Brewing says growing demand for craft beer played a role in its expansion plans, which coincide with its one-year anniversary in July. To date, the brewery’s beer has been distributed throughout Georgia.

“We have generated a lot of demand for our beer in the region as well as support for our mission," says Kevin Ryan, chief executive and former U.S. Army Company Commander. "With the South Carolina border only 15 minutes from Savannah, it was an easy choice to move north into the market."

Brewery news USA, KY: Bannerman Brewing to open in Louisville by the end of 2015
With another craft brewery down the road and multiple beer-focused restaurants within blocks, the owners behind a coming Clifton brewery hope to make their neighbourhood a highlight of the city's emerging beer scene, The Courier-Journal reported on June 26.

"We can turn this into the beer area of Louisville," said Bannerman Brewing’s co-owner Jeff Pluhar.

But Pluhar and co-owner Cory Riley have to get their brewery open, first. The pair has been working on Bannerman Brewing — located on Mellwood Avenue, Louisville — for about a year-and-a-half and are slowly making their way through renovations and license approvals.

Pluhar said opening the brewery has taken longer than expected because of the deteriorating condition of a building they bought in May 2014 and other ventures they've since entered into. But the owners still hope to open by the end of 2015.

Brewery news USA, MN: Lucid Brewing to open a new brewhouse and taproom in Minneapolis in October
Minnetonka-based Lucid Brewing is planning to expand to Minneapolis, Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal reported on June 29.

The suburban beer brewer will lease space in the Tubs Inc. building in the North Loop, Minneapolis. Lucid Brewing plans to build a 100-seat taproom, retail shop and brewhouse in the one-story building, at the corner of Fifth Street North and Seventh Avenue North.

Lucid Brewing's North Loop location is slated to open in October. Lucid Brewing will continue to produce at its original location in Minnetonka.

Lucid Brewing has been on an expansion kick over the last six months. In March, it completed a capital campaign to raise funds for building its own taproom, but was struggling to find a fitting spot for it in the west metro area. Then, about two weeks ago, the company announced it bought Hudson, Wis.-based craft beer brewer American Sky Brewing Co.

Brewery news USA, NJ: Twin Elephant Brewing Co. to open in Chatham this fall
Micro brewer Twin Elephant Brewing Company has leased a former industrial space at 13 Watchung Avenue in Chatham Borough, TAPinto.net reported on June 30.

NAI James E. Hanson, a leading New Jersey-based commercial real estate firm in Fairfield, on June 30 announced that it has facilitated the lease of a 3,500 square foot brewing space to the Morris County-based micro-brewery.

“This is one of Morris County’s first micro-breweries and Chatham and its neighbouring towns of Madison, Summit, New Providence, Short Hills and Millburn all present demographic profiles that are ideal for an artisanal brewery, and we presented this location as one that will enable Twin Elephant Brewing Company to serve the nearby population,” Ryan said.

The ownership team of Scott McLuskey, Cynthia Derama and Tim Besecker anticipate a fall 2015 Grand Opening.

Brewery news World: Beer prices index shows cheapest beer in Asia can be found in Delhi
The cheapest beer in Asia can apparently be found in Delhi and the most expensive in Hong Kong. A travel search engine focused on Europe, GoEuro, recently compiled an index of beer prices across 75 cities, including 12 in Asia (13, if Moscow is included). The index encompasses both supermarket and bar prices, basing supermarket prices on the average across five imports and one local brew and bar prices off the same beers served in three hotel chains. Far from comprehensive, the index is still interesting, given the surge in global beer consumption is driven by Asia (as well as Africa).

According to the 2014 annual Kirin Beer University Report worldwide beer consumption rose in 2013, the 28th year of consecutive growth. Asia consumed 4.8 percent more beer in 2013 than it did in 2012 and holds 34.8 percent of the global beer market. China, alone, holds a 24 percent share of the market, double that of the United States.

Overall, the cheapest spots (average between bar & supermarket) were, as can be expected, in Europe – Kraków, Kiev, and Bratislava topped the list – but Delhi came in fifth and Ho Chi Minh City in sixth. A beer at a bar ...More info on site

Barley news Nigeria: Sorghum malting plants investors worried by removal of embargo on barley malt and barley concentrates import
Nigerian investors in sorghum malting plants are currently closing shops owing to removal of embargo on barley malt and barley concentrates used in brewing beer and malt drinks, which now attracts five percent import duty and are being imported to the detriment of sorghum-based malt extract and sorghum malting, Business Day reported on June 29. The current waivers given to barley malt and barley concentrates imported in Nigeria from Europe, according to a section of investors and producers of sorghum malting and sorghum-based malt extract, mean that thousands of workers in the farming, processing and storage segments of the sorghum value-chain could lose jobs. Speaking on the current economic challenges facing the industry as a result of the five percent waiver on imported barley malt and barley concentrates, Sudhansu Sinha, managing director, Food, Agro and Allied Industries Limited in Sango-Otta, Ogun state, said the waiver given to importers of brewing raw-materials would surely affect sorghum malting plants and the country’s economy. Sinha disclosed that more than half of workforce in Food, Agro and Allied Industries Limited has been paid off and the plant shut down due to the waiver, saying that this has given leading brewers in the country the ...More info on site

Brewery news Singapore: With new liquor laws limiting alcohol sales, retailers and coffee shops hope non-alcoholic beer might woo back customers
With alcohol sales taking a hit lately due to new liquor laws in Singapore, some retailers and coffee shops are selling non-alcoholic beer in a bid to woo back customers, AsiaOne reported on June 29. Convenience store chain 7-Eleven, for instance, has been selling Asahi Dry Zero to mitigate the loss in sales resulting from new rules banning retail sales of alcohol after 10.30pm. These took effect in April.

While Asahi Dry Zero has similar packaging to regular beers under the Japanese brand, it is a beer that contains no alcohol.

A few coffee shops at drinking hot spot Geylang - where the ban on retail sales of alcohol start from 7pm, like Little India - have also introduced alcohol-free beer.

Meanwhile, Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) Singapore, the distributor of Tiger Beer in Singapore, has been testing a similar product here - Tiger Maxx - since late last year.

These products are considered beer because they are usually made with the same basic ingredients - water, hops and malt - which go through a similar fermentation process, before the alcohol is removed.

Rene de Monchy, head of marketing at APB Singapore, said the non-alcoholic beer category is growing faster than the beer category.

He said: "We ...More info on site
