So what is the difference between seeded and unseeded hops?
ABSTRACT
Most of the hops available today are unseeded. However in the UK you will still find male hop plants in the hop gardens. Brewers would like to know if the presence of seeds in hops has an impact on brewing characteristics (for the good or bad). This German team of researchers have now found that neither foam characteristics nor the hop oil composition was affected in brewing trials comparing seeded and unseeded hops, but what proved to be different was the beta-glucosidase activity (higher with unseeded hops). This might eventually have an impact on the aroma development overtime with the release of bound aroma compounds in the finished beers.

USA, TX & WI: Pabst Brewing Company to open in Milwaukee next summer
|
Pabst Brewing Company (“Pabst”), the world’s largest American owned brewer, announced on July 15 that it will open a new brewery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the site of the original Pabst Brewery, which was founded in 1844.
Partnering with Milwaukee based developers Zilber, Ltd. (“Zilber”) and BRM, Pabst plans to sign a multi-year lease on a building within the Pabst brewery complex and expects to open the brewery to the public in the summer of 2016.
“Our brews will symbolize the historic progression of beer styles throughout our 171-year relationship with Milwaukee's beer lovers. We are looking forward to partnering with local residents and businesses and engaging with this community that has been so supportive and loyal to us over the years.”
The brewery will serve as Pabst’s hub for innovation and new product ideas, and will be a central feature of Zilber’s redevelopment of the Pabst brewery complex.
“The launch of this brewery in Pabst’s original home represents a long-awaited return to our roots. Milwaukee is our home – the Pabst Mansion, the Pabst Theater, Pabst Farms, and this beautiful brewery complex – these are all part of Frederick Pabst’s amazing legacy, which we are honoured to continue by returning to our

USA, FL: Accomplice Brewery & Ciderworks opens in West Palm Beach on July 10
|
Accomplice Brewery & Ciderworks began full official production on July 10, meaning that they are now legally an operating brewery, New Times Broward-Palm Beach reported on July 13.
Accomplice Brewery & Ciderworks’s owners Matt Stetson and Felonice Merriman are positioned to bring a new approach to the beer culture of South Florida by tapping into a market that's been hereto-forth underserved.
"I do weird things that they don't normally do in beer making," Stetson said. "I started applying wine techniques to beer."
"We are trying to distinguish ourselves from everyone else. Because there's a million [beers] out there, we don't want to make those types of beers."
Because of this, Stetson ends up with beers that don't necessarily fit into the traditional style categories that the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) and Brewers Association put forth for their competitions and general naming conventions.
"We have seasonal delegations to our beers," Stetson said, explaining that as the seasons change, so will the recipes.
As for the name, Accomplice Brewery & Ciderworks is fairly straightforward.
"We share a lot," Stetson says of his partner Felonice. "I realized before I met her, if you're going to have any sort of business whatsoever, you need help, you can't do everything

USA, DE: Big Oyster Brewery launches inside Fins Ale House in Rehoboth
|
Fins Ale House and Raw Bar, a full service bar and restaurant on Coastal Highway in Rehoboth, recently became a brewpub thanks to Big Oyster Brewery, Delmarva Daily Times reported on July 13.
"It's pretty neat having a brewery within an ale house," said Tom Gaasbeck, the restaurant manager. "We have 24 lines running with craft beer, and now four of them are ours."
Andrew Harton, the head brewer, found his passion for craft beer when he started serving tables at Iron Hill Brewery in Newark. "Beer quickly became my life," Harton said.
"I've put in a lot of time to get to where I am today," Harton said. "But I am nowhere near done growing. Every day in this industry is a chance to learn something new."
Harton and Gaasbeck hope to distribute locally in the future.

USA, FL: Driftwood Ales brewery to open in Boynton Beach by fall
|
Construction of a brewery called Driftwood Ales is slated to start this summer and be done in time for a fall opening at 2901 Commerce Park Road in Boynton Beach, Sun Sentinel reported on July 13.
Driftwood Ales brewery’s co-founders Steve Dornblaser and Tim Dornblaser used to be part of Lagerhead Brewing Co.
Tim Dornblaser says he's excited to "help make Boynton Beach a top craft beer destination in South Florida" with the addition of Driftwood Ales brewery.
Interest in craft beer and breweries is on the rise in South Florida. In 2011, Florida had 45 craft breweries; by 2014, that number jumped to 111, according to the Brewers Association.
Florida craft brewers generated $875.8 million in economic impact in 2012, according to the Brewers Association.

USA, OR & TX: Ninkasi Brewing to expand in Texas on September 14
|
Eugene-based Ninkasi Brewing is expanding its reach again, entering the Texas market in September, The Register-Guard reported on July 15.
Ninkasi Brewing will make its debut in Texas in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on Sept. 14, through a partnership with Dallas-based Andrews.
“North Texas is a rapidly expanding market with a huge population and an ever-growing thirst for craft beer,” Ninkasi Brewing CEO Nikos Ridge said in a prepared statement. “Entering into a growing craft beer market with a team that fuels that growth is an exciting prospect; we feel fortunate to have the opportunity to be working with a craft-focused and innovative partner.”
With the addition of Texas, Ninkasi Brewing will be distributing in 10 states and two Canadian provinces.
“In addition, Ninkasi Brewing does “blast” distributions to several other areas, such as New York, Florida and Washington, D.C., sending out trucks several times a year,” brewery spokeswoman Ali AAsum said.
“Ninkasi Brewing’s selection of its latest market was based on its partnership with Andrews, which has a strong distribution network in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and also claims values that align closely with Ninkasi Brewing’s,” AAsum said.
Andrews cites integrity as its core value, saying it is “at the centre of everything we

USA, NC: Tarboro brewery to begin production in Tarboro in the middle of September
|
The new 10,000-square-foot Tarboro Brewing Co. is set to open in a few months, Rocky Mount Telegram reported on July 14.
Inez and Stephen Ribustello, owners of the popular On the Square restaurant in Tarboro, said they plan to start selling beer at the new microbrewery at the corner of West John and Main Street in Tarboro by the middle of September.
“That is the goal we’re aiming for, and we’ve done a lot of structural work,” Stephen Ribustello said. “We’re almost ready to get going.”
Inez Ribustello said the new pub in downtown Tarboro will be developed in three sections.
“The production side is the first phase; second is the exterior of the building; and third is the taproom,” Ribustello said.
“The development of the project was helped by a $200,000 Main Street Solution grant through the N.C. Department of Commerce,” Ribustello said. “The Tarboro Town Council approved the resolution in fall 2014.”
In addition, the Ribustellos said they raised $16,000 from investors last September and more than $15,000 through the crowdfunding website Indiegogo in July 2013.
The Ribustellos said Franklin Winslow, who runs Yards Brewing Co. in Philadelphia, is their partner.
The certified wine stewards are confident the new brewery can become a place that

Canada, ON: Second Wedge Brewing to debut in Uxbridge in autumn
|
Second Wedge Brewing has been in the works since early 2013. Recently, it finally locked down a location in Uxbridge, and intends to be up and running by this autumn, Canadian Beer News reported on July 13.
Second Wedge Brewing – named after the town’s location on the second of four wedges of the Oak Ridges Moraine – is being established by the husband-and-wife team of Rob Garrard and Joanne Richter.
While the pair was originally looking at a former Sears store in the centre of downtown Uxbridge as a possible location, that plan didn't come to pass, and they will now be setting up a shop in a 5,000 square foot industrial space at 14 Victoria Street, Uxbridge. Once open, the facility will include a 15 barrel brewhouse, a tasting room and a retail store.
“The goal is to have interesting and unique flavour profiles but always keep the flavours in balance so we have very drinkable beers,” Richter said.

Brazil: Ambev to pay $185 mln as fine for stifling competition
|
The Brazilian unit of international brewing giant Anheuser-Busch InBev NV has settled its dispute over a fine of 352.7 million reais ($185 million) imposed by the Administrative Council for Economic Defense, or CADE, after its reseller loyalty program was found to stifle competition.
Ambev SA began challenging the 2009 fine, which was later lowered to 229.1 million reais, before the Brazilian judiciary but has now agreed to abide by the decision, CADE said in a statement on July 14.
The settlement puts an end to any lawsuits, tax foreclosures and other procedural issues related to CADE's investigation of the loyalty program, “ending [the] dispute which has dragged on for several years and would last for more than a decade,” Ambev said.
“It is a historical agreement for the defence of competition in Brazil, which enabled the fulfilment of CADE’s decision and will spill over to eventual judicial agreements,” CADE President Vinicius Marques de Carvalho said in a statement on July 14.
CADE said it based the size of the 2009 fine both on Ambev's large market share — it accounts for nearly 70 percent of Brazil's beer sales — and the program's aim to encourage resellers to make sure at least 90 percent

Ukraine: Rada reduces cost of wholesale licence for microbrewers to UAH 30,000
|
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has adopted the draft law on amendments to some laws of Ukraine on the regulation of beer production and turnover which reduces the cost of a license for beer wholesale for micro-breweries from UAH 500,000 to UAH 30,000, Interfax-Ukraine reported on July 15.
All in all, 230 deputies voted for bill No. 2071-d. The bill will now be discussed in committees for second reading.
"I, having consulted with the members of the committee on taxation and customs policy, propose the following addition to bill No. 2971: to set the annual fee for a beer wholesale license for small beer producers, whose volume of own production and sales does not exceed 3,000 hectolitres per year, at UAH 30,000," the author of the bill, Petro Poroshenko nBloc MP Nina Yuzhanina, said at a parliament meeting.
According to her, draft law No. 2071-d kept the questions on the deregulation of the beer industry from government bill No. 2971. In particular, it foresaw the abolition of certification and conformity assessment of products and government regulation of minimum wholesale and retail prices.
The bill does not provide for excluding beer from the list of alcoholic drinks.

Namibia: SABMiller’s brewery in Okahandja officially opens on July 16
|
SABMiller Namibia’s brewery in Okahandja was officially opened on July 16 by the Hon. Immanuel Ngatjizeko, Namibian Minister of Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development, on behalf of Dr Nickey Iyambo, Vice President of the Republic of Namibia, Cape Business News reported.
Bottles of Carling Black Label first came off the packaging line at SABMiller’s inaugural Namibian brewery in September last year, marking a significant milestone for SABMiller Namibia, which previously imported all its beer from neighbouring South Africa.
Construction of the new US$33.3 mln, 260,000 hectolitre brewery began in mid-2013 and was completed in October 2014. The brewery is located on 7.2 hectares of land outside Okahandja city, 70km north of Windhoek. Besides supporting the local communities in which it operates, SABMiller is proud of the local job creation at the brewery by employing 184 direct jobs at the new plant and multiple indirect jobs elsewhere in the value chain.
SABMiller’s investments in Namibia, and more broadly across the continent, underline the company’s belief in the region and its ability to drive long-term growth in Africa. Its commitment in Namibia also aligns with the national government’s Vision 2030 of an industrial nation.
Also in attendance at the opening ceremony was Mr Otto Iipinge, Governor

South Korea: Oriental Brewery outperforming Hite Jinro in beer exports
|
Oriental Brewery (OB), Korea's largest brewer, has been outperforming rival Hite Jinro in exports as it makes the best use of the extensive global network of its parent, Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), according to industry officials.
OB's diverse product portfolio also has appealed more to consumers in more than 30 countries, boosting outbound shipments over the past few years.
For instance, the company's flagship brand Cass has been the best-selling beer in Mongolia, while its Hong Kong brand Blue Girl has captured the largest market share in the Chinese territory.
In contrast, Hite Jinro has seen beer exports decline over the years because sales in Japan have plummeted in the line with the yen's continued weakness. The stronger won has made Hite's beer and soju, distilled liquor, more expensive for Japanese consumers, sending sales in the brewer's largest foreign market plunging.
OB, headed by CEO Frederico Freire, said the brewer has been able to increase its overseas sales as Cass and other brands have received favorable reviews from consumers in more than 30 countries. Since exports exceeded $100 million in 2012, the amount has continued to climb, the company said.
"In 2012, our outbound shipments reached $100 million and we shipped more beer in 2013
