So what is the difference between seeded and unseeded hops?

ABSTRACT
Most of the hops available today are unseeded. However in the UK you will still find male hop plants in the hop gardens. Brewers would like to know if the presence of seeds in hops has an impact on brewing characteristics (for the good or bad). This German team of researchers have now found that neither foam characteristics nor the hop oil composition was affected in brewing trials comparing seeded and unseeded hops, but what proved to be different was the beta-glucosidase activity (higher with unseeded hops). This might eventually have an impact on the aroma development overtime with the release of bound aroma compounds in the finished beers.

Barley news USA, ID: Barley harvest starts in Idaho as crops develop well
Crops continue to develop well in eastern Idaho and harvest has started in some of the southern regions.

According to the USDA-National Agriculture Statistics Service Idaho field office, rain and cooler weather allowed for good crop progression last week and reduced stress in crops in the south-eastern region.

University of Idaho Extension educator Ben Eborn said that in the eastern region in Teton County, harvest has not yet started. “The malting barley and spring wheat looks awesome and some of it is starting to turn,” Eborn said, “they were fortunate to not have had the stripe rust and barley yellow dwarf disease in their crops that other areas had, so it looks as if producers in Teton County will have a good crop. It has been raining a little every day, but not enough to damage the crops.

”The wheat and barley harvests in the southern region were slowed by thunderstorms and rain but the harvests were in full swing in the south,” according to NASS. But heavy precipitation knocked down some mature wheat fields.

“Producers were able to get out into the fields 6.1 days during the week,” NASS reported. Producers are reporting their barley is 95 percent headed, and ...More info on site

Hops news USA, NC: The abnormally hot weather negatively affects the yield of hops
Craft beer is a booming industry across North Carolina but problems could be brewing for some local breweries due to a lack of hops, WSPA.com reported on July 22.

The unseasonably hot temperatures across central North Carolina in June and July mean a lower yield of hops, one of the main ingredients used in making beer.

“The weather this year has been negatively impacting our crops. We had a wet, gray May followed by an extremely hot June and that’s when the plants are becoming to really start to develop,” says Dan Gridley, a hops farmer with Farm Boy Farms in Pittsboro. “The ideal temperature I would suggest would be between that 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit range but most importantly you need to have that low humidity.”

North Carolina’s breweries aren’t the only ones that could be feeling the negative effects. The Pacific Northwest which produces roughly 85 percent of hops used in craft brewing across the country has also experienced an abnormally hot summer.

Lower hops production means some brewers may have to change their beer selection. Instead of brewing an IPA, which uses close to 70 pounds of hops in each batch, they may need to opt for something ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: New Belgium Brewing to open a small brewery in Denver in the first quarter of 2017
New Belgium Brewing is planting serious stakes in Denver with a satellite brewhouse in the River North neighbourhood, The Denver Post reported on July 22.

The Fort Collins-based company — Colorado's largest independent craft brewery — on July 21 announced plans to open a 10-barrel pilot brewery as part of the $41 million, 100-room The Source Hotel.

The project, expected to open in the first quarter of 2017, will be attached to The Source, an artisan marketplace and food emporium in Fort Collins.

Veteran RiNo Hotel’s developers Mickey and Kyle Zeppelin are leading the project.

New Belgium Brewing's move to experiment on a small scale in Denver dovetails with a couple of currents in the craft beer industry — beer aficionados' insatiable thirst for something different and the pairing of complex, ambitious beer.

"In the craft beer community, beer drinkers are always looking for what's new and what is changing and how brewers are pushing the envelope forward," said New Belgium Brewing’s spokesman Bryan Simpson. "You want to keep up with innovation and constantly imagining new things."

The 2,000-square-foot New Belgium Brewing's brewery will be housed on the RiNo Hotel’s ground floor.

New Belgium Brewing’s officials say they have long considered a Denver location to reach a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Hardywood Park Craft Brewery to launch a new brewery in Goochland
Richmond-based Hardywood Park Craft Brewery will spend $28 million over the next five years to expand operations in Goochland County, Virginia. The expansion will lead to the creation of 56 jobs, the brewery and Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe announced jointly on July 20, wtvr.com reported on the same day.

“Plans call for a 60,000 square foot brewery, packaging and distribution hall, a taproom, an amphitheater, an extensive garden and equipment to increase production capacity,” the governor’s office announced. The Goochland facility, located on 24 acres in the West Creek Business Park in Goochland, will “complement” Hardywood Park Craft Brewery’s current 12,000 square foot facility near the Diamond in Richmond.

“Embarking on this next step is vital in achieving long term sustainability for Hardywood Park Craft Brewery and reaching the goals Eric McKay and I started setting for ourselves when we brewed our first five-gallon batch of beer nearly 15 years ago, and it never could have happened without the support of Goochland County and the Commonwealth,” brewmaster and co-founder of Hardywood Park Craft Brewery Patrick Murtaugh said.

“We’re extremely proud of the jobs and ongoing tax revenue we’ll be able to create through this project, and we’re confident we found the right home ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MT: Missoula Brewing Co. reopens in Missoula on July 24
The Missoula Brewing Co., a name that hasn’t been seen in town since the early 1960s, opened on July 24, The Missoulian reported on the same day.

The beer, brewed in Missoula from 1910 to 1964, was one of the most popular in the region and was the inspiration for the city's first Celtic Festival in 2010, the brainchild of Bob and Shannon Lukes, who also own Missoula Brewing.

Shannon said it’s been busy with the grand opening of their brewery and the Celtic Festival falling on the same weekend.

“I would never have planned this week this way,” Bob said.

Highlander beer first appeared in 1910 after Missoula Brewing asked the New York Highlanders baseball team for permission to use the name.

In 2008, Bob Lukes partnered with Great Northern Brewing Co. in Whitefish to produce Highlander Beer for the first time in almost 50 years.

“The upgrade is purposeful,” Lukes said, “We want to really make nice craft beers.”

The brewery itself is 17,000 square feet of industrial metal and huge garage doors mixed with barn wood, barrels and countless Highlander memorabilia, on International Drive near North Reserve Streetin Missoula.

“Despite the fact we’re in this industrial area, it’s really quiet back here and really ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Odell Brewing Co. moves to an employee stock ownership plan
Each employee of Odell Brewing Company became a part owner of the 800 Lincoln Ave. brewery in Fort Collins on July 20, The Coloradoan reported on the same day.

Doug, Wynne and Corkie Odell had owned the brewery since its inception in 1989. The three sold 19 percent of brewery stock to a newly-formed employee stock option plan, in which all 115 workers participate. The stock will change in value as the company grows.

Wynne Odell will continue as chief executive officer, Corkie Odell will remain head of human resources and Doug Odell will continue as founder, a title he’s held for about five years.

A majority of the company’s stock has been sold to the Odells’ executive team, including Eric Smith, director of sales and marketing; Brendan McGivney, chief operating officer; and Chris Banks, chief financial officer. They have been with Odell Brewing for a collective 52 years. The Odells will retain 10 percent each as a family legacy, Wynne Odell said in an interview.

The employee stock option plan, the most common form of employee-ownership of a business, is a retirement plan often used to divide the shares of departing business owners into a trust and then among employee accounts, relative to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MT: White Dog Brewery opens on Main Street in Bozeman on July 22
Bozeman’s fifth microbrewery formally opened its doors to the public on July 22, a business built quite literally from repurposed pieces of the city’s heritage, The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported.

“Just about every piece of wood in here came out of the building when we did the demo,” said White Dog Brewing co-owner Joe Moore.

“The brewery’s custom-made bar also includes bricks from the old Lehrkind’s Brewery wall,“ Moore said — a nod to Bozeman’s brewing heritage.

According to city lore, Bozeman brewing pioneer Julius Lehrkind bought out what was probably the city’s initial Main Street brewery, Spieth and Krug, in the late 1800s.

The 12,000-square-foot building, the largest in the city until the construction of the Montana State University Fieldhouse in 1957, churned out 40,000 barrels of lager beer a year at its peak.

“The establishment’s name,” Moore said, “was inspired by a combination of a slang term for alcohol and a rather mellow white Lab hanging out behind the bar” one of several pups inside the dog-friendly establishment as it began to fill with thirsty patrons.

Brewery news USA, FL: Ten 10 Brewing Co. opens in Orlando on July 21
Ten 10 Brewing Co.’s brewery and tasting room officially opened on July 21, Orlando Sentinel reported on the same day.

The Virginia Drive bar in Orlando's Mills 50 district features on-site brewed beer. The brewery will be managed by business partners Mike Wallace and Patrick McPherson.

"We brewed a little bit of everything to try to make everybody happy," said Ten 10 Brewing Co. co-owner and brewer Mike Wallace.

Ten 10 Brewing Co.'s name is a reference to the bar's address: 1010 Virginia Avenue in Orlando.

Located across the street from The Fresh Market and the Mills Park plaza in Orlando, Ten 10 Brewing Co. was originally meant to house the Orange Blossom Brewing Co. brewery. When plans for that fell through, Wallace, a former sales representative for Terrapin Brewing, decided to open his own brewery at the site and craft his own beers.

"This is my chance to do my version of it (beer)," Wallace said. "We make fun, exciting beers."

“It's not your dad's light beer,” Wallace said, but quickly added that Ten 10 Brewing Co. does have light beers, only theirs are “flavourful”.

Brewery news USA, CA: Twelve Rounds Brewing Co. to open in East Sacramento on August 1
Twelve Rounds Brewing Co., a new brewery in East Sacramento, prepares for its soft opening on August 1, according to the business’ Facebook post.

"We will only have a couple of beers on tap and no restaurant yet. Parking may be difficult," it says. "Please be patient with us. This is our first business venture."

Dan Murphy and Elle Murphy own the brewery, which is located at 866 57th St. in East Sacramento. It has a boxing theme, which pays homage to Dan Murphy's Irish heritage and his father, who was an amateur boxer when he was young.

The owners plan to eventually add a restaurant as part of an expansion phase. The restaurant will include a partnership with Sacramento's Red Rabbit Kitchen & Bar.

Brewery news Asia: Thailand moves further in countering growing demand for alcohol
Thailand will ban alcohol sales near universities and technical colleges, putting the nation at the forefront of efforts in Asia to curb consumption, Bloomberg reported on July 23.

Under amendments to the Alcohol Control Act endorsed by the government on July 22 and to be implemented nationwide late next month, bars, clubs and retailers will be prohibited from selling alcoholic beverages within a 300-meter (328 yards) radius of colleges. The measures are aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle and tackling alcohol-related problems, including underage sex, the Ministry of Public Health said.

Thailand is moving further than other governments in countering growing demand for alcohol in Asia and the Pacific, the fastest-growing beer market for brewer Heineken NV. The World Health Organization has called for a 10 percent reduction in the harmful use of alcohol by 2025 from 2010 levels, implicating it in more than 200 diseases and injury conditions that the UN agency says kill about 3.3 million people a year.

“Thailand has the strongest tradition of trying to curb alcohol consumption and reduce alcohol-related harms,” said Juergen Rehm, professor and chair of addiction policy at the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health.

Thailand’s government has a taxation mechanism that “enables ...More info on site

Brewery news Singapore & Myanmar: Dispute between two stakeholders in Myanmar Brewery set to go on even longer
A lengthy dispute between the two stakeholders in Myanmar Brewery (MBL) is set to go on even longer with the parties in conflict over the amount to be paid for Fraser & Neave (F&N)'s stake in the firm, Straits Times reported on July 23.

An independent valuer said on July 21 that the fair value of F&N's holding is estimated to be 500 billion kyat (S$586 million). The valuer's report was welcomed by the other stakeholder, Myanma Economic Holdings (MEHL).

But MEHL said on July 22 that it disagrees with F&N's position that the sale should take place in United States dollars according to the 2013 exchange rate.

F&N estimates this to be US$560 million (S$765 million).

"MEHL stands ready and willing to conclude the sale and purchase of F&N's stake in MBL at 500 billion kyat within the 30-day period ordered by the arbitral tribunal," MEHL director Nay Wynn said.

MEHL had started legal proceedings against F&N after Thai tycoon Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi won control of the drinks-and-property conglomerate in a US$11 billion deal in 2013.

A court ruled that MEHL, which holds a 45 per cent stake in MBL, is entitled to buy F&N's 55 per cent share, after MEHL argued that its partner breached ...More info on site

Brewery news Malawi: Forensic auditors uncover huge ‘cashgate’ at Carlsberg Breweries Malawi Ltd.
Forensic auditors have uncovered a huge 'cashgate' amounting to more than K5.2 billion at Malawi's giant brewery, Carlsberg Brewery Malawi Limited, AllAfrica reported on July 13.

The scandal has led to the suspension of Carlsberg Malawi Financial Controller Geobra Kamanga, his deputy Austin Phiri and Ezzra Njobvu (Procurement Manager) who are suspected to have colluded to defraud the company.

According to Nyasa Times sources, the forensic experts who include one from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) uncovered the fraud mainly through purchase of raw materials like sugar and compromised procurement of raw materials and services.

"It was a network of people and this has been happening for a long time and that is why the figure is huge," said a source privy to the investigation.

He added, "This could be one of the most complicated white collar crimes in Malawi so far and it was only because of these foreign investigators that the fraud was unearthed."

A Carlsberg Malawi official who did not want to be named said some big gurus at the company became suspicious of Kamanga when he 'mysteriously' missed his flight to Hong Kong two weeks ago where he was going for a Board meeting together with some bosses.

"It was suspicious ...More info on site
