More about the hard resins

ABSTRACT
We learned last month that the composition of the hard resins might contain a good portion of prenylated hop flavonoids. This article now explains how to brew with it. The authors found that both varietal dependencies and hopping regimes to have an influence. Should we ever run into another shortage on alpha, we will have the hard resins to count on.

Brewery news USA: Boston Beer reports profit rise despite Samuel Adams brand’s weakness
Boston Beer Co., the maker of Samuel Adams Boston Lager, on July 30 reported second-quarter profit rise on higher sales volume, even as demand for its iconic brand continues to show signs of weakness, Wall Street Journal reported on July 30.

Chief Executive Martin Roper said new packaging and an advertising campaign were planned but said the company doesn’t expect brand results to rebound until 2016.

In a conference call with analysts on July 30, Mr. Roper declined to offer specifics but said company officials plan to talk to wholesalers and retailers in October.

Shares, which closed at $223.47 on July 30 and were initially up 5% in late trading, are now down 5% to $212.

Founded in 1984 by C. James Koch, Boston Beer revolutionized the beer industry in the U.S. with a “craft” beer from the Mr. Koch’s family recipe book it was a beer his great-grandfather had made at his brewery in St. Louis in the 1870s. Mr. Koch named it after Samuel Adams, the Revolutionary War leader and one-time brewer.

Mr. Koch, the company’s chairman and former chief executive, started selling the brew door to door, or rather, bar to bar. The first cases of Samuel Adams Boston Lager were sold ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Forbidden Brewing Co. launches in Courtenay
Forbidden Brewing Co, the third microbrewery in the Comox Valley, has opened its doors. Forbidden Brewing is the smallest of the three breweries in the area, Comox Valley Echo reported on July 30.

It all began when CEO, Michael Vincent found a U-Brew that was going out of business in Victoria, BC. Vincent dismantled and packed the contents of the U-Brew into a 5 ton truck and drove it up to his home in Courtenay. The equipment was transferred into a SeaCan container on his property and there it sat while he considered what his options were.

Long time friend, Aaron Bible was very interested in the project. Vincent and Bible worked together opening the Saltwater Waldorf School in Tintown.

They formed a partnership and began looking for a location for a brewery. Vincent had a strong relationship with the General Manager of the Westerly Hotel, Anna Martin and he approached her about a vacant space in the hotel. After striking up a lease, Vincent began the long road of building the lounge area and installing the brewing equipment.

"It has been a real challenge to do this within our budget. This has been my ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Playalinda Brewing owners to launch a new brewery in Titusville
The operators of Playalinda Brewing Co. plan to open a larger brewery in south Titusville, Florida Today reported on July 28.

They currently operate a craft brewery and tasting room in downtown Titusville.

Their proposal envisions a brewery at 5220 S. Washington Ave. They are seeking property tax breaks from Brevard County for their project.

The operators of the Playalinda Brewing Co. craft brewery and tasting room in downtown Titusville say business has been so good since they opened in November 2014 that they want to expand their operations by opening a larger brewery in south Titusville.

The partners in the venture — Bryan and Donna Scott and Ron and Katie Raike — detailed their plans in documents filed with the Brevard County Commission, as they are seeking property tax breaks for the expansion, which they are calling the Brix Project Brewery. “Demand for the product continues to substantially outpace supply, sparking serious discussion, research and movement to start a new venture,” they said in their application.

Their proposal envisions a brewery at 5220 S. Washington Ave. in Titusville. The partners will make a $3.65 million capital investment, including $2.25 million on building refurbishment construction costs and $1.4 million on machinery, equipment and furniture.

Brewery news USA, NY: Montauk Brewing Co. re-opens for business after an expansion in Montauk
Montauk Brewing Co. has officially re-opened for business, after expanding its building on South Erie Avenue in Montauk to allow the company to brew its beer on site for the first time since its inception, Dan's Papers reported on July 28.

“We’re thrilled to bring the brewery to our hometown,” says Vaughan Cutillo, co-owner of Montauk Brewing Co. The entire process, including acquiring the permits and building the roughly 1,200 square foot extension to the gallery-tasting room, took about three years. The actual build-out was a yearlong process, and the brewery was closed for much of spring 2015. “The support from the community has been tremendous, and we are eager to get people in to see what they have supported,” Cutillo added.

Cutillo and friends Eric Moss (brewmaster) and Joe Sullivan (CEO) founded Montauk Brewing Co. in 2012. Though the recipes are all Montauk Brewing’s, the actual brewing process had previously been contract brewed.

“We will be able to use local ingredients in certain beers and have more flexibility to brew more styles,” Cutillo says.

“We want to create jobs and build our brand to really show what Montauk is at its heart—a group of hard working, outdoor motivated individuals with infinite amounts of ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada: Molson Coors to launch its US Blue Moon beer nationally
Molson Coors Canada is hoping that a beer by another name will be a sweet selling point for discerning drinkers, The Globe and Mail reported on July 29.

The brewing giant announced on July 29 that it is bringing its US “craft” beer brand, Blue Moon, to Canada starting August 15. The wheat beer will be sold nationally at bars and restaurants, under the name Belgian Moon.

The brand, which launched in 1995, has come under criticism in the U.S. in recent years for not making its link to MillerCoors LLC known on its packaging – a tactic that some believe indicates a big brewer trying to pass off one of its products as a smaller-scale craft beer. Other brands have encountered similar scepticism, such as Shock Top, which is sold by Anheuser-Busch InBev; and the Granville Island Brewing Co. brand, which Molson purchased in 2009.

The Brewers Association, a craft industry group in the U.S., defines craft beer as having an annual production of six million barrels or less, produced by a brewery that is less than one-quarter owned or controlled by another company in the alcoholic beverage industry that is not a craft brewer. While there is no official definition, industry ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NS: Unfiltered Brewing joins ranks of Halifax’s craft breweries on July 29
A new craft brewery in north-end Halifax with a new approach to brewing opened for business on July 29, CBC.ca reported on July 30.

Andrew Murphy is one of the partners. He said not filtering the beer gives it a fuller flavour and it has more vitamin B complexes than some other beers.

“The brewery focused on West Coast American-style India pale ales,” Murphy said. That means drinkers will taste more hop than malt. The beer also takes on the qualities from the hops like fruitiness and bitterness. Murphy and his wife grew the idea of opening a craft brewery 12 years ago with brewer Greg Nash.

"All three partners are unfiltered all the time. We'll tell you exactly what we're thinking," Murphy said. That unfiltered attitude is part of the company's marketing. It uses salty language on social media and its website.

This is the seventh craft brewery in Halifax. It might seem like overkill but Murphy said that is not the case.

"I would say craft brewing is far from reaching its saturation point. There's still a lot of growth. Everything I read indicates there is a lot of growth in the market everywhere. We see a lot of demand for our stuff," ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Central Standard Brewing to open in Wichita on August 21
Andy Boyd and Ian Crane are just a few weeks away from officially opening their new Central Standard Brewing to the public. They have passed all their inspections, finished all their construction and have brewed lots and lots of beer in anticipation of August 21, which they have chosen as opening day, Wichita Eagle reported on July 28.

The brewery will be set up in a 4,000 square foot building at 156 S. Greenwood in Wichita, at the corner of Douglas and Hydraulic across from Hyde Park. When it first opens, it will have IPA, pale ale, sour beers, a Belgian triple and a Saison on tap. More beers will be added later.

Brewery news USA, MI: Urbanrest Brewing Co. to come to Ferndale in 2016
Zach Typinski and his wife, Mary, are opening Urbanrest Brewing Company, an organic brewery, in Ferndale in 2016. Everything they sell will be organic - including the beer, WXYZ reported on July 28.

They have a garden where they're growing hops, the main ingredient in beer.

The Typinskis have launched a Kickstarter campaign to help pay for the brewery's taproom. They hope to raise $25,000 before the campaign ends on August 18.

Brewery news USA, IN: Thomas-Stieglitz Brewing Co. moves ahead with the building renovation in Goshen
If you have driven past 211 S. Fifth St. in Goshen, you may have seen some changes happening. The building which is now home to Janus Motercycles is soon to be the home of Thomas-Stieglitz Brewing Co., Flavor 574 reported on July 28.

As with many other local breweries that have opened or are in the process of opening, Gary Stieglitz and Jeff Thomas have been patiently awaiting permits at the state and federal level, and have been making changes to the building that houses their brewery.

Although Gary Stieglitz didn’t give an opening date, he.is quite optimistic about the overall progress he’s made so far.

Brewery news USA, MD: Independent Brewing Co. to finish construction on Bel Air craft brewery
Phillip Rhudy says he's trying to use as many locally-sourced products and services as possible in constructing his new Bel Air craft brewery and in the beer he'll be making there, Baltimore Sun reported on July 30.

"We have 12 acres of barley planted now at Hawk's Meadow Farm in Whiteford," Rhudy said during a tour of the brewery on July 30.

“The transformation of the former auto shop at 418 N. Main St. in Bel Air into the Independent Brewing Co. is about 95 percent complete, with the exception of an upgrade to the electrical service,” said Rhudy, the brewery's owner and brewmaster.

"We're 95 percent done," Rhudy said, as workers from Silver Hill Contracting Inc., of Baldwin, busied themselves with the final stages of construction.

All of the brewing equipment has been installed behind the tasting room.

The brewing process starts in the three-tank "brew house," which can produce 10 barrels of beer per batch.

Once placed in kegs, the beer will "either go out the door for distribution or into the cooler for retail sales," Rhudy said.

Initially, the beer won't be canned or bottled, which would add significantly to the cost of production.

Rhudy said the brewing system allows staff to brew two batches ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AR: Core Brewing & Distilling Co. to set up a distillery and a trade school in Fort Smith
Core Brewing & Distilling Co. is looking to set up a distillery and trade school in downtown Fort Smith, Times Record reported on July 30.

Fort Smith’s senior planner Brenda Andrews said the Springdale-based company is in the process of purchasing the former Times Record press facility at 1000 Rogers Ave. in downtown Fort Smith, and has submitted an application to the city to put in a distillery at the 36,050-square-foot location. “It will also look to establish a trade school for interested brewers to learn about brewing, distilling and cooperage,” Andrews said.

Core Brewing & Distilling Co.’s director Marvin Wilson said on July 29 that while details of the sale are being finalized, the company is eager to start the process.

“The plan is to get everything up and functional. When we are all operational and smooth, then we would want to fold in the classes,” Wilson said.

Wilson mentioned the company is considering a partnership with the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, which he said would make the university one of, if not the only, institution in the nation that will offer a bachelor’s degree in brewing, distilling and cooperage.

“This will be a real big draw for the city,” Wilson said. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, LA: Second Line Brewing opens in New Orleans on July 29
New Orleans-based Second Line Brewing got its state ATC licensing and celebrated by brewing its first batch of beer on its production system, Eater reported on July 30.

After months of construction and inspections, Second Line Brewing finally achieved legally licensed status and immediately began brewing.

The brewhouse has been under construction for the better part of a year. Co-owner Mark Logan credits his vendors for high quality work.

The IPA was brewed with "old school" hops, Logan says, including Centennial, Chinook, and some Cascade. "It's all about whatever we can get," he adds, noting that the most popular hops are locked up in contract to other breweries and not available to him at this point. That should change once now that he's able to enter into hop contracts as a licensed brewery, but for now, Logan is confident that these old school hops will translate into a solid, enjoyable, balanced, and tasty IPA.

Logan and his team - head brewer Karl Menzer and assistant brewer Shane Glackin - meticulously monitored every step of the process. Logan, a former biochemist, was especially involved in ensuring the correct chemistry of the water and the wort with various salts, minerals, and tests to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Mount Angel Abbey’s monks to open Benedictine Brewery by summer 2016
Monastic affinity for alcohol might come as a surprise to those unfamiliar with the cloistered Catholics, but Christian monks have been brewing beer for more than 1,000 years, OregonLive.com reported on July 30.

“Monks in the medieval era brewed beer to keep their communities hydrated,” said Father Martin Grassel, who oversees Mount Angel Abbey's brewing venture. “In those days, clean water was hard to come by,” Grassel added.

Though the Benedictine monks at Mount Angel aren't thirsty for safe liquid, they do need ways to financially support their hilltop community.

Grassel, a former software engineer featured in a narrative by reporter Melissa Binder, didn't become interested in beer until after entering the monastery. Grassel microbrews in his free time, but has been actively working on establishing a sustainable brewing business.

With a little help, Grassel has developed recipes, finalized the branding and set up a limited liability company. All that's keeping Benedictine Brewery at bay are building codes.

The monks hoped to set up shop in an existing building at the abbey, but learned that retrofitting a structure would cost more than constructing a new one. They've been through eight iterations of building plans, Grassel said, but haven't quite settled on a feasible location and ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: SABMiller announces Australian dollar five-year notes offering
SABMiller, a London-based multinational brewing and beverage company, has announced an offering of Australian dollar five-year medium-term notes via joint lead managers ANZ and Westpac.

Price guidance was released at 135bp area over asset swaps for a trade due to price on July 30-31.

Although the issue, through FBG Treasury (Aust) Pty Ltd, is technically a domestic corporate offering, investors will treat it like a rare corporate Kangaroo because its global parent company is the guarantor.

SABMiller is the world's second-largest brewer in revenue terms, and rated A3/A- (Moody's/S&P).

Brewery news Ireland: Ireland’s 60-70 craft brewers now hold 1.2% of the market
For most people, knowledge of Irish beer begins and ends with Guinness.

Seamus O’Hara is trying to change that a pint at a time, The Toronto Star reported on July 30.

As chairman of the Independent Craft Brewers of Ireland, O’Hara has his work cut out for him in a country where one out of every three beers sold is a pint of Guinness. It’s work he’s been doing since founding based Carlow Brewing in 2006.

“People thought I was completely insane,” said O’Hara, who was in Toronto this past weekend with a small vanguard of his fellow Irish craft brewers for the Toronto Festival of Beer.

When he founded Carlow, there were “about 10” independent breweries in Ireland. Today, there are between 60 and 70. Roughly 50 of them have their own brewing facilities (the rest make their beer on contract at other breweries). Despite the growth, craft beer holds just 1.2 per cent of the Irish market, says O’Hara.

“We’re not going to take over from Guinness,” O’Hara chuckled.

While some smaller Irish craft breweries push the envelope with bolder styles more common to the North American craft brewing scene, O’Hara and many others take a more traditional approach.

“The vast majority of what we ...More info on site

Brewery news Sri Lanka: Fitch Ratings confirm Lion Brewery’s National Long-Term Rating at 'AA-(lka)' with a stable outlook
Fitch Ratings said on July 30 it has confirmed Lion Brewery (Ceylon) PLC's National Long-Term Rating at 'AA-(lka)' with a stable outlook.

The rating agency also confirmed Lion's senior unsecured rating and the rating on its debentures at 'AA-(lka)'.

“The National Long-Term rating takes into account Lion's strong business profile as the leading beer producer in Sri Lanka,” a statement said.

“The rating also factors in the growing demand for beer driven by increasing urbanisation and preference for lower alcohol content beverages.”

Lion is the largest producer of beer in Sri Lanka, where beer is the second most-consumed alcoholic beverage after arrack. Its flagship brand, Lion, accounts for close to 80% of its revenue, with its domestically produced and imported brands making up the rest. Lion's leading position helps the company secure new brands and access a wide distribution network.

Lion's leverage increased to 2.9x during the financial year ended 31 March 2015 (FY15) from 2.2x at end-FY14 after the MBL acquisition was completed in October 2014, and following capacity expansion over the last two years. However, Fitch believes the financial risk is partially offset by improvement in its competitive position stemming from the investments. The acquisition of MBL will bring brands such ...More info on site

Brewery news Hungary: Competition authority orders the largest breweries to reduce sales via exclusive contracts
Hungary's competition authority on July 30 ordered the largest breweries operating in Hungary to reduce their beer sales via exclusive contracts to pubs, hotels, restaurants and other catering venues so that smaller firms can gain market share, Nasdaq reported.

The largest breweries - the local arm of Dutch brewer Heineken NV, London-based SABMiller PLC, and Molson Coors Brewing Co. - have agreed to comply, so the authority, GVH, decided no infringement was committed and didn't impose any fines.

Based on its investigation of the big breweries' contracts between 2007 and 2013, GVH established that the firms, together with brewer Pecsi Sorfozde Zrt., controlled by Ottakringer Getraenke AG of Austria, commanded about 44% of beer sales in Hungary's catering sector.

With Carlsberg A/S, which has no brewery in Hungary but is a major importer, these five biggest participants share up to 95% of the market, GVH said.

"As a result, neither imported products nor smaller breweries could obtain market share from the big breweries because of the exclusive contracts," GVH said.

Heineken Hungary has always conducted business in compliance with the legal regulations and the rules of fair market behavior, the company said in an emailed statement to The Wall Street Journal. The company operates ...More info on site

Brewery news New Zealand: Moa Group well positioned to take advantage of growing demand for craft beer
Moa Group says it is well positioned to take advantage of a growing market for craft beer, with lower overheads and improved margins, Radio New Zealand reported on July 30.

Shareholders elected two new directors, and a chair with industry experience to lead the board, at its annual meeting in Auckand on July 29.

Chief executive Geoff Ross said the company had made a number of operational improvements over the past year which had reduced costs and positioned the business to develop new market opportunities.

"We're focusing on New Zealand and Australia, that's where we've got our own people and resource.

"China's really exciting for us at the moment ... we've got a great distributor there, we've been working hard with them (and) we see growth there," he said.

Moa's share price ended half a cent down to 28 cents on July 29, a fraction of its 107.5 cent price just two years ago.

Brewery news South Korea: Koreans want their imported beer in big cans
Beer cans are getting bigger with growing popularity of imported beer. Most canned beers sold in South Korea have been 330 ml or 355 ml, but people in their 30s and 40s who have developed a penchant for imported brews are plumbing for the half-litre and boosting the sales dramatically, The Chosunilbo reported on July 30.

Imported beer sales have grown steeply from a couple of years ago, and they now account for about 40 percent of total sales in major supermarket chains E-Mart, Lotte Mart, and Homeplus.

Sales of imported beers at Lotte Mart increased by 9.7 percent so far this year, and sales of domestic beers went down by 4.7 percent.

Most of bestselling imported beers come in 500-ml cans, which accounted for 23 percent of total beer sales at Lotte Mart this year, up four percentage points from a year ago.

In the same period, sales of 330- and 355-ml cans, which are mostly produced domestically, dropped five percentage points to 59.8 percent.

The Netherlands' Heineken in 500-ml can has been the import bestseller at Lotte Mart this year. For E-Mart, it has been Japan's Asahi, while Paulaner from Germany is most popular in Homeplus.
