Brewery news USA, OR: Craft Brew Alliance publishes second quarter 2015 results
Craft Brew Alliance, Inc. (CBA), a leading craft brewing company, on August 5 reported its financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2015. The Company reported net sales of $58.5 million, a 3% increase over the second quarter of 2014, driven by a 2% increase in shipments and higher net sales per barrel. Gross margin increased to $18.7 million, while the gross margin rate decreased by 90 basis points as a result of higher cost of goods sold per barrel compared to the same period last year, which included increased production volume in anticipation of their Memphis brewery coming online. Selling and general administrative expense increased by $1.1 million, which reflects planned investments in sales infrastructure and marketing.

Net income for the second quarter was $1.4 million, or a decrease of $0.6 million from the same period in 2014. Earnings per diluted share for the second quarter of 2015 were $0.07, or a decrease of $0.03 from the comparable period in 2014.

A performance has been observed in three of Craft Brew Alliance’s core brand families, with double-digit depletion growth from Kona and Omission, which remains the #1 beer in the gluten-free beer category; and Widmer Brothers continued its steady ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Scholb Brewing Co. to become Torrance’s sixth production brewery by the end of the year
Scholb Brewing Co. has won planning approval for a light-manufacturing facility in Torrance that will become the city’s sixth production brewery when it opens later this year, The Daily Breeze reported on August 6.

The Torrance Planning Commission on August 5 unanimously approved the operation of the 7,075-square-foot brewery and tasting room on Columbia Street at the Torrance Matrix business park

“The management team has selected the city of Torrance due to its balance between industry and community and because of its emerging reputation as a craft beer destination,” CEO Allison Kolb wrote in a letter to the panel. “This new craft beer culture emphasizes quality over quantity and features many varied and ever-evolving styles. Customers, as well as the brewery owners themselves, feel they are a part of a growing movement which is truly transforming the beer industry.”

Torrance community has earned a reputation as a hub of the county’s rapidly growing craft beer industry.

Brewery news USA, FL: 26 Degree Brewing Co. to open in Pompano Beach by mid-September
"Brewing beer was always a hobby," says Greg Lieberman at his Pompano Beach-based brewery. "I never thought that one day I would actually open a brewery," New Times Broward-Palm Beach reported on August 5.

Lieberman is one of three men behind 26 Degree Brewing, a Pompano Beach-based facility cofounded by Lieberman's childhood friend Yonathan Ghersi and Oscar Olikowicz. Together the trio — which named the business for the latitude parallel that runs through South Florida — are planning to open by mid-September.

Lieberman says the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency was instrumental in helping 26 Degree Brewing find its home at 2600 E. Atlantic Blvd. in Pompano Beach. The business partners considered locations in cities like Miami's Wynwood district and Delray Beach before settling on Pompano Beach. When it opens in September it will become the city's second brewery to begin operating.

Thanks to the 21,000-square-feet of space, 26 Degree Brewing currently stands as one of South Florida's largest brewing operations, located in a building that was formerly home to a Winn-Dixie and — most recently — a Bealls Outlet store.

The brewery will be running on a 30-barrel system with an oversized mash tun, something that will give Lieberman and his ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Full Beard Brewing to launch in Timmins by 2017
The Timmins Daily Press reports that a local entrepreneur is making plans to open the city’s first brewery.

Full Beard Brewing is being founded by Jonathan St-Pierre, owner of local draught supply and servicing company “Tap It!” Working together with a cousin, St-Pierre hopes to open Full Beard Brewing within the next 18 months, and has plans for a brewery, retail store and tasting room with patio.

The company is preparing to apply for loans and grants to fund the brewery, and is fundraising with t-shirt sales and a crowdfunding campaign to raise C$30,000 in seed money in order to qualify for a grant from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund.

Brewery news USA, PA: 2SP Brewing Company opens in Aston on August 4

So far, the 15,000-square-foot brewery is serving the Delco Lager, Baby Bob Stout, The Weiss Wit, the ASAP IPA and the Bellcracker Double IPA.

Michael Stiglitz and Ben Muse founded the company and brought on head brewer Bob Barrar, formerly of Iron Hill Media.

Brewery news USA, MD: Diamondback Beer to open new brewery in Baltimore next summer
Less than a year after joining Maryland's craft beer scene, Diamondback Beer is gearing up to open its own brewery, Baltimore Business Journal reported on August 5.

The company is searching for warehouse space between 6,000 and 10,000 square feet in several Baltimore neighbourhoods. Francis Smith, one of the brand's three co-founders, said Diamondback Beer has a few locations in mind and hopes to select a space by October, with a goal of opening the brewery next summer.

Diamondback Beer contracts out of Beltway Brewing Co. in Sterling, and previously contracted out of Eastern Shore Brewing Co. The company had always planned to open an independent brewery within its first few years and is now looking to bring its production back to Maryland.

"We definitely wanted to do it quickly," Smith said. "We know it's easy to get stuck in the contract brewing situation." The new agreement will expand its reach throughout Baltimore City and Baltimore, Howard and Anne Arundel counties.

"When it comes to the beer, there is every type of beer out there and there are so many great ones, so it’s extremely difficult to differentiate yourself on that aspect,” Smith said.

To that end, having a physical location will help Diamondback Beer ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Big River Brew Pub closes & reopens after some lease disagreements in Richmond
Richmond News reports that a legal dispute led to the sudden closure of Big River Brew Pub last week, only to be quickly followed by its reopening just a few days later.

According to the initial story, the landlord of the brewpub and its adjacent joint business “The Zone Bowling Centre” received a court order to have both businesses shuttered due to lease disagreements and ongoing issues with late and missed rent payments. The order went into effect on July 24, and a sheriff’s notice was posted indicating that the landlord had taken possession of the property.

However, a follow-up article reports that an agreement has been reached between the two parties, and both venues were reopened on July 28. However, no terms of the new agreement have been disclosed.

Brewery news Canada, ON: New Ontario Brewing to start brewing in North Bay
The North Bay Nugget reports that after a year and a half of planning and preparation, a brewery will soon be operating in the Northeastern Ontario city for the first time in a century.

New Ontario Brewing is being founded by partners Ron Clancy, Mike Harrison and Dan Delorme, and takes its inspiration from a brewery of the same name that was open in North Bay from 1907 until it was destroyed by fire in 1915.

The new iteration of New Ontario will be located at 1881 Cassells St. in North Bay where the last bit of work is being done on the brewhouse and retail store in anticipation of the final federal and provincial approvals to allow brewing and sales to start.

Once up and running, the brewery will offer samples, bottles and growlers in its retail store and tasting room, as well as keg sales to local licensees.

Brewery news USA, MI: Trail Point Brewing to launch in Allendale on August 8
Allendale-based Trail Point Brewing Co. to open on August 8, MLive.com reported on August 5.

"Our name is an homage to these trees and the history of Allendale," said Greg Evans, a partner in the new microbrewery at 6035 Lake Michigan Drive in Allendale.

Business partners Evans, father Gary Evans, and Jeff Knoblock are tapping eight beers for the new brewery's grand opening on August 8, including an oatmeal stout, wheat ale, two IPAs, a lemon shandy, and a cream ale.

Longtime homebrewers, Knoblock and Gary Evans are working on a seven-barrel system at Trail Point Brewing, which Evans said will produce a range of beer styles.

"I focus on all styles," Evans said. "Light beers, cream ales, shandys, pale ales, IPAs, double IPAs, black ales, stouts — you name it and I've brewed it or will eventually."

“Trail Point Brewing plans to begin distributing kegs at some point soon, and potentially cans,” said Greg Evans.

Barley news Germany: BayWa buys trader Evergrain to expand international malting barley business
Leading German agricultural trading group BayWa AG said on August 5 it was buying German barley trader Evergrain to expand its international malting barley business.

The takeover, still needing competition approval, should enable BayWa's malting barley trading volume to exceed 1 million tonnes in coming years, the company said.

Hamburg-based Evergrain sources malting barley, used for beer and malt production, from Western Europe, Argentina and Australia and serves brewing and malt industry customers in Europe, Asia and South America, BayWa said.

BayWa's agricultural business was traditionally focused in south Germany, but last year it moved into grain trading in Spain and Italy and in 2012 it expanded into the Netherlands.

Brewery news World: Beers with ABV of 6.5% or higher gaining global popularity - research
A new research from Mintel finds that almost one in four (23%) beers launched globally in 2014 (and 25% in 2013) had an ABV of 6.5% or higher, up from just one in seven (15%) beers launched in 2012.

What’s more, largely due to the growth of craft beers, Mintel’s research finds that between 2011 and 2014, the number of beers launched globally with an ABV of 6.5% or more rose by 280%, with the number launched in North America growing by 319%, in Europe by 307%, in Latin America by 260% and in Asia Pacific by 46%.

According to The Craft Effect, Mintel’s new report, between 2011 and 2014, North America witnessed the most beer launches in the world with ABVs of 6.5% or higher at 46%, closely followed by Europe which hosted 40% of launches.

“More global beer drinkers now view high ABV as a key quality indicator, inspired by the success of craft beer in the US – and increasingly globally over the past two years,” commented Jonny Forsyth, Global Drinks Analyst at Mintel, “While in certain countries, drinking strong beer has long been the cultural norm, they were previously the exception rather than the rule. The craft beer phenomenon ...More info on site

Brewery news Cameroon: Beer consumption registers 4.9% increase last year
More than 620 million litres of beer was consumed in Cameroon in 2014, recording an increase of 4.9% from 2013, Cameroon Concord reported on August 7.

Beer remains the most popular alcoholic beverage consumed in Cameroon. The dizzying proliferation of taverns and bars is sufficient to indicate that the brewing industry controlled by three companies is flourishing. The beer parlours cluster together despite government legislation which provides for a distance of about 500 meters between two outlets. Despite a recent order from the Ministry of Finance increasing the prices of alcoholic beverages, the consumption of beer still remains at its greatest high.

Brewery news New Zealand: DB to lay nearly two-thirds of workers and reduce capacity at iconic Tui Brewery
Staff at DB's iconic Tui Brewery in Mangatainoka in the Tararua District of New Zealand's North Island are in shock after learning that nearly two-thirds of them, including two workers who have been there more than 40 years, may lose their jobs, NBR reported on August 6.

DB, owned by Dutch-based Heineken, entered a consultation process this week with the 37 staff on a proposal to spend NZ$4-5 million replacing the brewery with a much smaller capacity one. It will also undertake earthquake strengthening of the historic seven-storey Tui brew tower, no longer in use, which was built in 1931 so brewers could use gravity to turn malt into beer.

If the proposed redevelopment goes ahead, up to 13 fulltime and 11 part-time jobs would go, although DB said in a statement the exact numbers won't be finalised until staff provide feedback and the consultation is concluded next week. Any changes won't take effect until May next year.

DB won't say how much smaller the new brewery would be or what had sparked the proposal. The Tui brewery HQ tours, which currently attract 40,000 visitors a year, will continue.

Engineering Printing and Manufacturing Union organiser Ruth Sproston said staff had been expecting some job ...More info on site
