Brewery news USA, WA: Rooftop Brewing Company to reopen in Seattle on August 13
Rooftop Brewing Company originally opened in the summer of 2013 on the northern slope of Queen Anne Hill in Seattle. Then, discovering an almost immediate need for expansion, the brewery closed in September of 2014. On August 13 Rooftop Brewing Company reopens for business with a bigger brewhouse and a new location, seattlepi.com reported on August 11.

Rooftop Brewing is located near the Ballard Bridge at 1220 W. Nickerson Street, Seattle.

“We’re thrilled to remain in the neighbourhood, continuing to serve this amazing community that has been so gracious in its support,” says Craig Christian, the owner, manager and brewer at Rooftop Brewing. “The idea of ‘place’ has always meant a great deal to us. We tapped into something special with our little garage and we learned a lot about the brewery we wanted to be, but it was definitely time to move on. To become an even bigger part of this community – and to finally have an actual rooftop deck – it’s all very exciting.”

The new location is in a building it shares with Caffe Ladro and Zoka Coffee roasteries. The tasting room will offer ten rotating taps. The rooftop deck at Rooftop Brewing overlooks Ballard Ship Canal. For cyclist, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Crooked Handle Brewing Co. to launch production in Springboro by mid-November
Crooked Handle Brewing Co. could open as early as mid-November at 760 N. Main St. in Springboro, Dayton Daily News reported on August 11.

“Crooked Handle Brewing will have a seating capacity of 50 to 60 inside and another 16 on a patio,” said Jason Moore of Miami Twp., co-founder of Crooked Handle along with business partner Jeff Pedro Jr., also of Miami Twp.

The brewery’s owners say their long-term plans, after the tap room is established, involve leasing warehouse space to open a larger production brewery, first for kegs that would be delivered to area bars and restaurants, and ultimately for canning or bottling Crooked Handle Brewing’s brews for retail sales.

The brewery is planning to serve a broad range of beer styles, with a partial focus on beers that “bridge the gap” between mass-produced domestic beers and the sometimes-extreme, high-alcohol craft beers, its owners said.

“We want people to be able to come in here and have more than one beer,” Moore said.

Plans call for Crooked Handle Brewing to serve only its own beers, opening with a selection of four flagship brews, then ramping up to offer additional seasonal beers.

“We believe there is plenty of room for growth,” Pedro said.

Brewery news USA, VA & NC: Devils Backbone Brewing Co. to expand distribution to Triad
Devils Backbone Brewing Co., a craft brewery that's grown to Virginia's largest within the last seven years, will be taking over taps around Triad’s restaurants and bars to celebrate extending distribution into North Carolina, Triad Business Journal reported on August 7.

The brewery, based in Roseland in western Virginia with its production brewery in Lexington, Va., has signed on with Greensboro-based R.H. Barringer Distributing Co. as well as Craft Central, the craft beer division of Caffey Distributing Co., to bring its beers to the Triad and Charlotte markets.

Those are among six distribution agreements around North Carolina for the brewery, which hit 45,000 barrels last year and is on pace to top 65,000 barrels by the end of this year.

"Our problem throughout the history of the company has always been one of never having enough beer," said Steve Crandall, who founded the brewery in 2008 with his wife, Heidi. "North Carolina is going to sop up a lot of our beer."

The brewpub was planned to anchor a 100-acre mixed-used development that Crandall, a builder, was planning, but then the recession hit.

"A funny thing happened — the real estate market crashed and the beer took off," Crandall said. "At some point we knew ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Garage Brewing to open production facility in Murrieta this year
Temecula-based Garage Brewing Co., which opened in 2013 inside a former tire shop, is opening a production facility in Murrieta later this year that will allow it to expand its packaging options and capacity, Press-Enterprise reported on August 7.

Garage owner Lou Kashmere said the facility will be housed in a 10,000-square-foot building at the southwest intersection of Fig Street and Jefferson Avenue in Murrieta. It will produce canned beer, kegs for restaurants and bottles of Garage Brewing’s most popular brews.

The flagship location at Temecula Parkway and Old Town Front Street, will be used to brew “one-offs,” experimental quaffs that are used to test out a concept, and small batch brews, which includes even more exotic flavour combinations.

In early 2016, Kashmere said he’ll open a tasting room at the new Murrieta facility, creating a destination on par with the tasting rooms run by area breweries such as Black Market, Wiens, Ironfire, Electric City, Refuge and Aftershock.

When Kashmere opened Garage Brewing, he thought the pizza side of the operation would be the most logical candidate for expansion and possible franchising. There are plenty of craft beer breweries, especially in Temecula and the North San Diego County region, and there was talk from ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Dearborn Brewing opens on August 7
John Rucinski had Dearborn Homecoming solidly in his sights as he made final preparations to open Dearborn Brewing, The Detroit News reported on August 8.

"There was no way we were going to miss this," Rucinski said. "I thought we'd have a soft opening ahead of it but it didn't work out that way."

Rucinski and his wife Sheila opened the doors of Dearborn's first microbrewery on August 7, the first day of the city's annual festival, a multi-day affair featuring music, food and activities that allows more than 30 Dearborn-based nonprofit groups to raise money for causes that support the community.

Rucinski said the microbrewery features ales using recipes he's fine-tuned in his 15 years as a home brewer.

August 7 was "crazy, absolutely crazy," Rucinski said. "We opened our doors at 3 and I don't think we took our foot off the gas all night." Rucinski said they went through 12 kegs on August 7, and called his bar staff "rock stars" for keeping up with the opening night crowds.

"We were slammed open to close," said server Leslie Parsons.

Dearborn Brewing uses a 7-gallon system with four 300-gallon fermenters.

The microbrewery got off the ground with a $25,000 Kickstarter campaign with many contributions coming ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Hydro Street Brewing closes doors in Columbus on August 6
Hydro Street Brewing in Columbus closed its doors on August 6 after the business served its last locally-brewed beer, Beaver Dam Daily Citizen reported on August 7.

The business was opened by Aaron and Sandye Adams in 2012. In spring 2013, Hydro Street Brewing was granted an $82,323 loan from a revolving loan fund from Columbus.

“The city is reviewing the issues as to how the closing of Hydro Street Brewing affects their revolving loan,” Columbus city administrator Patrick Vander Sanden said. “We are working with the city attorney on the matter.”

The Columbus City Council asked on August 3 for Adams to be contacted to meet with them to discuss payment options for the revolving loan.

Sandye Adams sent a letter to Mayor Kelly Crombie on June 9 asking for the loan to be restructured. City attorney Paul Johnson indicated on August 3 that due to Aaron Adams having to take over the position of kitchen manager last October the time he had to brew beer was greatly reduced and had changed the businesses wholesale accounts.

The revolving loan fund was set up as a resource for Columbus from the federal government through the City Development Block Grant program and is administered through the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Byway Brewing Co. to open by end of December
On August 10, some of the partners in the Byway Brewing Co. joined with Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr., various council members and others for the groundbreaking of their planned brewery and restaurant. Dave Toth, one of the partners, estimated the 12,000-square-foot building could open in late November of early December, nwitimes.com reported on August 11.

Toth had earlier estimated that 15-17 people might be employed by the company initially. Based on the experience of other microbreweries, he speculated that could grow to a few dozen people within three or four years. The partners were expected to invest about $2.3 million for construction of the facility.

Hammond sold Byway Brewing Co. a 2.39-acre site for $336,000 with $331,000 of the cost coming by way of a forgivable note. If Byway Brewing Co. is still in operation in five years, the partners will not have to pay anything beyond an earnest payment of $5,000 for the land. Hammond, in June, also agreed to provide another $150,000 in tax increment financing money to shore up the soil at the site.

"The great thing about this location is that if we're successful, we have plenty of room to expand. We will never have to move from this ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Castle Island Brewing Company to launch in Norwood in October
“All the years I worked in consulting, I was creating Power Points and spreadsheets. I got very good at it, but it’s not as gratifying as creating a product, putting it in someone’s hands and saying ‘Drink this,’” Adam Romanow said. “The hours are longer, the work is harder and the pay is not as good as some of the jobs I’ve had before, so I got to love what I’m doing,” Wicked Local Norwood reported on August 10. Romanow is the founder and president of Castle Island Brewing Company, which is undergoing construction at 31 Astor Ave., Norwood. The name is borrowed from Castle Island, the home of “Fort Independence” and popular recreation site in South Boston.

“I live a block away from Castle Island. Living a block away, it felt like a great name, because there is that personal connection,” Romanow said. “For me, Castle Island is about relaxing, before or after a hard day’s work.“

“Castle Island Brewing Company is Norwood’s first brewery,” Romanow said.

He aims to open a 30-barrel brew house, allowing him to brew approximately 5,580 gallons of beer per day. Romanow won’t be alone in his efforts: joining him is head brewer Matt DeLuca.

“We had the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: 2SP Brewing Company opens in Aston on August 4
As the doors of 2SP Brewing Company opened, the guys behind the operation made certain not to disappoint their guests, The Times Herald reported on August 10.

“People came out of the woodwork for it,” Michael Contreras, 2SP Brewing’s spokesman, said. “People were lined up out the door. The best part was they really loved the beer.”

2SP Brewing Company is the creation of renowned beer crafter Bob Barrar, restaurant owners Michael Stiglitz and Ben Muse and head cellarman Andrew “Ruby” Rubenstein.

On August 4 they opened. By now, they expect to have 10 to 11 beers available on their 20-beer tap.

“We’re building it up,” Contreras said. “Beer takes time to ferment and we only have so many. Consistency is a big thing. If you have a Delco Lager, it’s going to be the same every time.”

Finally, a beer to match the uniqueness of this special western Philadelphia suburb that has its own Urban Dictionary definition describing it, in part, as not just a place to live but a way of life.

An outsider who’s become Delco-assimilated, Contreras has seen the vibe when out selling the beer.

“In Philly, I go out and I say, ‘Hey, you know, I’m with 2SP Brewing, I’m with Bob,’” ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Doc G’s Brewing Company to open in DuBois this fall
Doc G’s Brewing Company, a brewery and family-friendly restaurant, located at 208 W. Long Avenue in DuBois, is slated to open for business this fall, The Courier-Express reported on August 9.

Boasting of a 15-barrel brew system with the capacity to output 18,000 kegs annually, the brewery will offer six flagship craft brews ranging from an orange blossom wheat to a Scottish ale, an American IPA to a Belgium style stout.

Owning a brewpub has been Dr. Jeff Gilbert’s dream for over a decade.

“My wife finally said, ‘Are you going to shut up or are you going to do it,’” Gilbert said with a laugh as he stood amid the naked wooden beams, ladders, and piles of power tools currently strewn through the future brewpub which formerly housed a plumbing business.

Brewery news USA, WA: Flying Bike Brewery to open in Greenwood
Flying Bike Brewery has opened its doors in Greenwood. The brewery, at 8570 Greenwood Avenue North, is a cooperative, meaning it is owned, controlled, and operated by its members, instead of investors, KOMO News reported on August 7. "We have the opportunity to create what I think is the best beer in Seattle," said Ryan Vanderpol, former president of the brewery's board of directors. "We do that because we're not just two or three people deciding the different beers we brew. We have 1,500 members who decide the beers." Each of those members spent $150 to join the co-op during the past four years, earning voting rights on everything from what to serve on tap. Members submit ideas for beer recipes, which are then voted on by the group. Similar to REI and other co-ops, members get dividends after the end of the year, based on the company's profits. "We're actually kind of doing things backwards. Most places start as a one or two-person operation. They build from the ground up. They build a customer base," said Kevin Badger, who is president of the board. "We've kind of inverted that and built up with our membership base as our ...More info on site

Brewery news Venezuela: Cerveceria Polar to restart operations
Venezuela's largest beer manufacturer says it will restart operations after shortages of raw materials led it to close some breweries, AP reported on August 11.

Cerveceria Polar announced on August 11 that it's received the malted barley it needs to manufacture the golden brew that is a favorite in the South American country.

The company makes more than 70 percent of Venezuela's beer. Last week, bottles of Polar began to disappear from store shelves in Caracas due to difficulty obtaining ingredients.

Venezuela's socialist government controls access to foreign currency, which means companies often must wait for official approval to import essential materials.

Government officials did not address the brewery shutdowns. In the past, authorities have accused Polar of trying to destabilize the country by creating an illusion of shortages.

Brewery news China: A brief guidance on opening bar or microbrewery in China
As the world’s largest beer market, China offers a lot of opportunities for beer aficionados and the seasoned brewer alike. Beer consumption has been steadily increasing in the country, with per-capita beer consumption rising at an annual rate of 5.1 percent from 2008-2013. As the Chinese middle class develops tastes for heavy lagers and IPAs, there has been a significant increase in demand for foreign imports, with U.S. beer imports to China more than doubling between March 2013 and 2014.

These trends have prompted many investors to start considering ways in which they can tap into China’s beer market, whether it be importing beer or opening up a bar or microbrewery in China. The process for opening a bar, entertainment venue, or microbrewery is in many ways quite similar to the process for opening a restaurant or café. However, there are some additional licensing procedures and considerations that investors need to be aware of before embarking on their business operations, Asia Briefing Ltd. informs.

Step 1: Finding the Right Location

Like finding a location for a café or restaurant, finding the right location for your bar or microbrewery can be a very tricky task. In order to avoid renting out a location that ...More info on site

Brewery news North Korea: North Korean Government seeking foreign investors for building new brewery in Wonsan port city
The North Korean Government is seeking potential foreign investors to support the construction of a new $39 mln brewery in Wonsan port city in Kangwon Province, The Drinks Business Review reported on August 11.

The investment is a part of the North Korean president Kim Jong Un's plans to develop more than 100 new separate projects in an effort to turn the Wonsan-Kumgang Development Zone into an international tourism hub.

The Wonsan investment committee has reportedly secured more than $150 mln in foreign financing to fund the project development.

The brewery is designed to produce 50 million litres of beer including 20 million litres of draught beer and 30 million litres in plastic bottles, annually, according to the documents acquired by Reuters.

Independent consultant supporting Wonsan investment committee Michael Spavor was quoted as saying: "North Korean beer tastes great and despite the really big demand for it on the east coast, there's no large-scale brewery in the region capable of generating the supply."

The decision to build new brewery comes as a result of rising demand and poor infrastructure.

The country's largest beer production factory, Taedonggang Beer, is currently using old UK-manufactured equipment.

Brewery news Australia: Lion to be first to add nutritional information panels to its beer bottles and cartons
As Lion announces an Australian beer industry first with adding nutritional information panels (NIPs) to bottles and cartons across its entire wholly-owned Australian beer portfolio, managing director James Brindley told TheShout, "this is the right thing to do", The Shout reported on August 12.

Starting this month Lion's beer bottles will carry nutritional information on sugar, preservative calorie (kilojoule) and carbohydrate content.

Brindley said labelling is part of a bigger "Beer the Beautiful Truth" program and that there were two main reasons behind the initiative.

"One is emotive and one is rational," Brindley said. "The emotive reason is that we are in the beer business, we love beer and it's not very well understood and it gets a bad rap. So we wanted to educate people so they can reappraise beer.

"The rational part is that beer is at its lowest level of consumption per capita since figures have been recorded and that's bit of an economic challenge for us, so if we can get people to reappraise beer and consume beer more frequently and enjoy beer more frequently it is going to be good for business."

Brindley said that pre-empting harsh government legislation on labelling was "absolutely not" behind this decision. He added: ...More info on site
