Brewery news Canada: SABMiller seeks to grow its presence on the Canadian market
A beer war is brewing in Canada as SABMiller seeks to grow its presence following its separation from partner Molson Coors, CTV News reported on August 16.

Just four months after forming a Canadian subsidiary, the world's second-largest brewer is targeting dominant rivals Molson Coors and AB InBev's Labatt.

"To say that we're going to overtake the two big boys would be a bit of stretch so I would be happy to settle in at No. 3," said general manager Paul Verdu.

To get there, SABMiller Canada hopes Miller Lite -- available in Ontario and Newfoundland until 2010 -- will steal market share from dominant players Coors Light and Bud Light.

Miller Genuine Draft, previously sold for about 20 years through a partnership with Molson Coors Canada, and premium brands such as Peroni, Pilsner Urquell and Grolsch will also be sold in Canada, though primarily outside Quebec.

All of SABMiller's products will be imported from the United States or Europe.

Global demand for light beers has been growing. It accounts for about half of total beer sales in the U.S., but less than 30 per cent in Canada.

Beer market specialist Plato Logic estimates light beers account for 20 per cent of total beer volume and have ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Craft beer trend spreads across the United States
A new craft brewery opens every 16 hours on average in the US. But in Mississippi, one opens only every four months, Financial Times reported on August 16.

Mississippi has the country’s lowest number of breweries per 100,000 population: 0.3, against Vermont, which has 8.6, the highest.

For Matthew McLaughlin, a lawyer at Baker Donelson based in Mississippi’s capital, Jackson, the state’s strict alcohol regulations are a frustrating barrier to the development of artisanal beer.

“Craft beer is turning into a conversation about economic and community development, tourism and the creative economy. Unfortunately for Mississippi, it has turned into a conversation about missed opportunities,” McLaughlin says.

But that is beginning to change. In nearby Florida, a new state law came into effect last month that now permits craft breweries to operate a limited number of taprooms — beer bars — without having to feign that they are also promoting the state’s tourism industry.

In the 1980s, Florida had granted an exception to Anheuser-Busch’s brewery at Tampa. Busch Gardens was allowed to sell beer to the public, which could be taken home, so long as it promoted tourism. Though the loophole had been intended for Busch Gardens, other breweries exploited it too.

The new law also ...More info on site

Barley news USA, MT: Montana’s barley harvest almost completed
Harvest is well underway – and ahead of normal – for many crops across Montana, but reporters are noting there is a wide range of yields, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service Montana field office.

In addition, heat has been a factor with temperatures in the north-eastern region ranging in the 90s for several days in a row.

In the Flathead Valley in north-western Montana, representatives from CHS are reporting that both winter wheat and peas are nearing harvest completion, with spring wheat about a quarter finished, according to CHS agronomist Clark Krantz.

“But the region has been very dry, unlike some other regions in the state,” Krantz notes.

“Since April 1, we’ve been lacking rain which has affected yields in areas of Flathead, Lincoln and Lake counties,” Krantz said, adding the rain has hit the Bitterroot Mountains and over toward Helena, but moisture is missing many of the fields in the northwest.

Some producers do have irrigation, and those yields are better, although there have been several high 90-degree days in a row that have stressed the crops.

Montana Grain Growers Association (MGGA) director Tryg Koch, a producer in Flathead County, reported yields vary from good to poor, depending on moisture received during ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Craft brewers need capital for expansion but still reluctant to accept offers from Wall Street investors
Brooklyn Brewery, the craft beer maker operating from New York City's most populous area, resisted taking money from investment firms for almost three decades, according to co-founder and Chairman Steve Hindy. Now the brewer of Brooklyn Lager is having second thoughts, Reuters UK reported on August 19.

Hindy, who sold control of the brewery three years ago to one of his early backers, the wealthy Ottaway family, said the company needs capital to expand its business and meet rising demand for its beer. So it's considering selling some equity with the help of investment banks, becoming one of more than a dozen U.S. craft brewery companies thinking about accessing the deep pockets of institutional investors.

"We want to stay independent," said Hindy, in an interview at his Brooklyn office. "But we are looking at building a very large brewery in New York City, which will probably cost around $150 million."

The craft beer industry is booming, buoyed by deregulation and the increased buying power of its largely millennial customer base. The $19.6 billion U.S. craft beer market grew by about 18 percent in barrel volume in 2014, according to the Brewers Association. By contrast, the U.S. beer industry as a whole saw volumes ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Rock County Brewing to open in downtown Janesville by the beginning of 2016
A Janesville microbrewery has landed a home downtown for brewing, tapping and selling beer that three local craft brewers say will fly under the name Rock County Brewing, Gazettextra reported on August 13.

“We wanted it to be simple. No big gimmicks, no crazy, extreme names or product labels. The beer and the location will do the talking. We'll teach people that like big-name, light beer that beer made with hops that have a little flavour and colour isn't a bad thing,” said Janesville resident Andy Walker, one of the brewery's partners and brewers.

Walker along with Janesville resident John Rocco, who owns Janesville home-brewing retailer Farmhouse Brewing Supply, and Rockton, Illinois, resident Ed Sundstedt, an employee at Rocco's store, signed a lease last week at the former Carriage Works building at the northeast corner of Milwaukee Street and Parker Drive in downtown Janesville.

The partners will have a three-barrel microbrewery and tasting room in the Carriage Works' northeast end along the east side of North Parker Drive.

The Rock County Brewing partners say they'll submit plans within weeks for city review to wall off the back portion for fermenting and brewing operations.

Rocco said this week it'll be a four- to six-month process ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Crooked Handle Brewing Co. to open in Springboro by mid-November
Crooked Handle Brewing Co. is about to open in the northern parts of the Greater Cincinnati metro area, WCPO reported on August 18.

Construction on Springboro’s new Crooked Handle Brewing Co. is under way and owners said they hope to open as early as mid-November.

The brewery is located at 760 N. Main St. in the Marketplace at Settler’s Walk development, Springboro. Jeff Pedro Jr., Jason Moore and Chris Bruce co-founded the brewery and Moore serves as head brewer.

The 3,600 square-foot brewery and taproom will feature a 3 bbl. (barrel) brew house. The company will start off with three 3 bbl. fermenters and one 7 bbl. fermenter. The owners hope to add one more 7 bbl. fermenter in their first year.

Pedro said Moore has been brewing beer at home for seven years and has used a commercial pilot system for almost the last five years. The team has also sought guidance from several Dayton-area breweries.

“We have been testing and refining well over 20 recipes on this system. We continue to develop relationships with other Dayton breweries. I am proud to say that all have been very welcoming and allowed [Moore] to shadow brew days and share ideas,” Pedro said.

“We plan to ‘bridge ...More info on site

Appalachian Mountain Brewery, Inc. announced 2nd Quarter revenue increased significantly and was up 27% to $478,572 compared to 1st Quarter 2015 at $348,844.

Revenue increased by 60% to $478,572 for 2nd Quarter 2015 versus $192,450 for 2nd Quarter 2014.

Net profit increased by 32% in 2nd Quarter 2015 to $111,852 compared to $76,317 in 2nd Quarter 2014.

We are now able to leverage the CBA Wholesale Distribution Network in North Carolina and beyond. Currently, the wholesale network has since enabled both our craft beer and cider lines to become more available to more customers at select restaurants, bars, grocery stores, bottle shops and retail chains across Western and Central North Carolina. Additionally, under our Alternating Proprietorship agreement, Appalachian Mountain Brewery started brewing test trials of our core beers in Portsmouth, NH. Brewery news USA, IL: Like Minds Brewing to open in Chicago by the end of September
The owner of the popular Milwaukee restaurant Sanford will open his brewing business in Chicago instead of staying in Wisconsin. Justin Aprahamian said the blame is a 2011 law that prohibits a restaurant owner with a liquor license to obtain a brewers license, WDJT reported on August 18.

"We were looking at properties, we were talking about distribution and some red flags came up," Aprahamian said. "There was some interpretation that we thought we could and then through conversations with the state that it wasn't in fact going to be feasible and that's when we started looking at Chicago.”

Aprahamian and his partner John Lavelle plan to open Like Minds Brewing in Chicago in an 8,000 sq. ft. building. They are making a range with a seasonal approach, he said. Examples include Rhubarb Saison, Cucumber Pilsner, Black Currant and Lemon Verbena Pale Ale.

Aprahamian said he's not trying to make a political statement, however, he said, some sections of the law need attention because it’s affecting local business.

"It's frustrating, but there are parts of that law that make sense, but there also parts of that law that need to be addressed," Aprahamian said.

"It would have been nice to be in Milwaukee I mean ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Asheville Brewing moves production from Merrimon Ave. to Coxe Ave. in Asheville
Asheville Brewing Company begins moving all of its beer production to its main Coxe Avenue site in Asheville. The Merrion Avenue “mothership” will remain open as a taphouse, pizzerria and discount cinema, Asheville Citizen-Times reported on August 17.

“The seven barrel brewhouse at Asheville Pizza and Brewing, 675 Merrimon Ave., will find continued life at the company’s downtown location, 77 Coxe Ave.,” company president Mike Rangel said.

Beer has been made on Merrimon Avenue in Asheville since December of 1997 when the site first opened. At the time, there were only two other breweries in Asheville - Highland Brewing and Green Man at Jack of the Wood.

Former Two Moon brewer Doug Riley has remained with Asheville Brewing since it acquired the Merrimon location in 1999.

“That little brewery has made a lot of beer,” said Rangel. But the space was cramped and it no longer made sense to use as a brewing location,” Rangel said.

“It will take about 60 days to move the brewing equipment from Merrimon to Coxe and install the system there,” Rangel said. “The old Merrimon brewery space will be converted to a cooler to store beer made on Coxe Avenue,” he added.

By shifting all production to Coxe, all ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Windmill Brewing opens in Dyer during the weekend of August 15-16
Justin Verburg, Jeremy Ward and Scott Vander Griend have launched Windmill Brewing Co. on 2121 Gettler Street in Dyer, which officially opened during the weekend of August 15-16. The name is a tribute to their Dutch heritage, which is shared by many in region communities, nwitimes.com reported on August 15.

"We're all Dutch, so we thought it made sense," Verburg said. "And we won't be open Sundays because that's when the Dutchman goes to church, takes naps, eats a hearty dinner and spends time with family, et cetera, et cetera."

Justin Verburg has brewed everything from a light rhubarb wheat beer to a strong, molasses-heavy 13 percent ABV Russian Imperial Stout. And now he has the brewing kit formerly used by the One Trick Pony microbrewery in Lansing and a prime storefront near the hospital in Dyer

Verburg, a Purdue Calumet University graduate, took up homebrewing with a five-gallon pot not long after he was invited to Three Floyds' Dark Lord Day in 2008.

"I like unique beers," Verburg said. "We have pale ales but there are billions of great ones and the best in the world are in Munster. We're not looking to go toe-to-toe with Three Floyds. I’m interested in sours ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MO: The success story of Boulevard Brewing Company
Boulevard Brewing Company in Kansas was one of the first craft beer breweries to expand on a national level, Tulsa World reported on August 18.

John McDonald had problems trying to get a loan for his new brewery. All the banks he went to asked him, “Why would you want to build a brewery, we have a brewery in the state that does very well?” That brewery produces Bud Lite.

With financial help from his friends and family, McDonald began construction of Boulevard Brewing Company in 1988 on Kansas City’s Southwest Boulevard. Boulevard Brewing started and so did the ability for him to start brewing Boulevard Pale Ale and Boulevard Wheat, which are still being produced today.

Boulevard Brewing was recently acquired by Duvel Moortgat Brewery. But Duvel Moortgat Brewery has not changed the beer recipes, and it has only encouraged the growth of Boulevard Brewing.

Boulevard Brewing distributes to 31 states and holds the distinction of being the eighth-largest craft brewery in the U.S. In 2014, it broke ground on a $12 million-dollar expansion of its Kansas City brewery, called “Cellar Five.” The project will consist of a 3,600-square-foot single-story fermentation structure that will house six 1,000 barrel fermenters.

Alongside it will be an ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Bemidji Brewing Co. to expand to a new location by summer 2016
After two successful years at its current facility, Bemidji Brewing Co. announced on August 18 that it plans to renovate and move into another location downtown in 2016, Bemidji Pioneer reported the same day.

According to a press release, Bemidji Brewing, which operates at 401 Beltrami Ave. has planned a three-phase, nine-month project to move the business to 211 America Ave., Bemidji.

During the expansion process, Bemidji Brewing will maintain its current operation and taproom at the existing location.

"After a thorough site-selection process, we are excited to realize this next chapter of Bemidji Brewing," co-founder Bud Kaney said in a release. "It feels great to see things happening after so much planning."

The first phase of the expansion will include preparing the production space and getting the 15-barrel brewhouse running. The company will then build out a 2,000 square-foot taproom and patio for its second phase and incorporate in-house food sales with a small-plate food menu for its third phase.

The company release states the new location offers 6,100 square feet of space and that the 15-barrel brewhouse, along with added fermentation and cooperage space will allow the business to grow from its current maximum output of 450 barrels per year to more than ...More info on site

Brewery news Rwanda: Bralirwa looking to end poor performance next year after brewery and soft drinks plants upgrading
Rwanda’s leading beverages producer, Bralirwa, is looking to end its poor performance next year when the company completes the last phase of brewery and soft drinks plants upgrading, AllAfrica reported on August 17.

This follows release of the brewer's financial statement for the first half of the year indicating a 25 per cent drop in net profit to Rwf3.7 billion, down from Rwf4.9 billion in June last year.

According the statement released on August 14, the Rwanda Stock Exchange (RSE)-listed company, however, registered a 6.9 per cent growth in revenues, which were driven by growing sales across all its brands.

Beer sales grew four per cent over the reporting period, while soft drinks sales were up 13.4 per cent.

The statement indicated that since 2012, when the company started its investment programme, there have been increased bank interest and depreciation charges, which it says have directly negatively impacted the company's net profits.

The firm's net interest expenses increased by over Rwf1 billion to Rwf1.1 billion in June from Rwf86 million last June, mainly related to the soft drinks plant investment.

"The plant was commissioned in the last quarter of last year and from then on related interest charges were no longer capitalised but expensed," the ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: AB InBev to close Stag brewery in London
Anheuser-Busch InBev plans to close the historic Stag brewery beside the Thames River in London by the end of the year, St. Louis Business Journal reported on August 17.

One of the oldest brewing sites in the United Kingdom, the Stag brewery produced Budweiser for the U.K. market. It had been slated to be closed in 2009 after InBev's $52 billion takeover in November 2008 of St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch, but was given a reprieve due to strong demand for the brand in the U.K.

Now the brewery will be sold for redevelopment, AB InBev confirmed.

AB InBev officials said the company's Magor and Samlesbury breweries are able to handle the additional volume from Stag's closure.

Brewery news Ethiopia: Dashen Brewery launching its second plant in central Ethiopia
Dashen Brewery Plc is to begin production at its newly constructed second plant built in Debre Birhan town (central Ethiopia), Ethiosports reported on August 17.

The plant will produce two million hectolitres in its first year and three million hectolitres after that, according to Dessalegn Mekonnen, project manager. The new factory is producing the same quality of beer as Dashen’s first plant in Gonder with the same packaging and 4.5pc of alcohol.

It was expected to take 2.6 billion Br, but the whole plant, including the building and machinery, was completed for just 2 billion Birr, according to Dessalegn Mekonnen, the project manager. The new factory rests on 12 ha plot of land in the town, which is located in North Shoa Zone of Amhara Region, 130 km northeast of Addis Abeba.

Production will begin in the next few days, says Dessalegn.

Dashen’s first plant produces 900,000 hl but the company needed to build another factory, because the existing production could not meet the demand.

The company chose Debre Birhan because of the barley it grows and its proximity to Addis Abeba, Dessalegn explained. From there Dashen wants to distribute its beer country-wide.

Dashen Brewery is owned by Tiret Corporate, which has 49pc share, and Duet ...More info on site

Brewery news Finland: Craft brewing sector held back by needless bureaucracy
Microbreweries are being founded in Finland at a growing rate and it is now easier than ever to get your hands on a locally-made brew. But microbrewers say Finland’s needless bureaucracy is holding the industry back, as decision-makers still have to make good on their promise to allow the brewers to bypass the state retailer Alko and carry out direct sales, yle.fi reported on August 16.

The Malmgård microbrewery near the southern city of Porvoo makes beer that is sold in Finland and Denmark. Malmgård’s brewmaster Markku Pulliainen prefers Denmark’s alcohol policy to that of his home country.

“They don’t have any of these fictitious alcohol regulations there. You can buy our beer from the flower shop or a home decorating shop. And in Denmark, you can found a microbrewery by simple announcing that you are starting one up,” he says.

Finns are warming to the taste of home-brewed beer and the number of microbreweries here has grown at a steady pace. The total will soon surpass 50. The only thing that is holding the growing business back is Finland’s strict regulations on alcohol use and sales.

“New breweries are fighting for their existence at present. If the regulations and taxes could only be ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Microbreweries enjoy the first year of free operation
Faced with a choice between repressive communism in the north or military dictatorship in the south for most of the 20th century, Koreans are familiar with the concept of having two not-very-good options. Until recently, they also had to choose between two very bad beer companies, the lowly Hite and OB, Business Insider reported on August 15.

But all that changed in April 2014, when the government loosened restrictions that had long prohibited microbreweries from operating by mandating a large volume production that microbreweries simply could not match. (Similar deregulation in the ’70s helped usher in the U.S. craft beer boom.) The first few beer geeks with dreams of introducing tasty craft beer to a Korean market opened up shop, and the results have been impressive.

The first year has proven one thing: Korea was a ripe market for microbrews, so much so that supply cannot meet demand. Microbreweries like the Hand and Malt Brewing Company have seen a threefold increase in both production and brewery space in year one. Galmegi Brewing Company’s sales have doubled since last summer, and Magpie Brewing Company estimates that their yearly production will have increased fifteen times from last year’s output.

But there have been growing pains. ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Beer imports up nearly 24% in January-July
South Korea's beer imports soared nearly 24 percent in the first seven months of this year, customs data showed on August 19, amid their growing popularity among local drinkers, Yonhap News reported.

The value of beer imports reached US$77.6 million in the January-July period, up 23.7 percent from $62.7 million a year earlier, according to the data by the Korea Customs Service (KCS).

In volume terms, beer imports came to 93.1 million litres in the seven-month period, compared with 65.2 million litres a year earlier.

The KCS attributed the increase to greater domestic demand for more diverse types of beer from across the world.

At the current pace, beer imports are expected to top the $100 million mark for the second year in a row, it said.

By country, Japan was the No. 1 exporter of beer to South Korea in the seven-month period, followed by Germany, Ireland, China and the Netherlands.

During the cited period, South Korean beer exports stood at $46.3 million, up from $41.2 million tallied the year before.

Hong Kong and China were the largest export markets, followed by Iraq, Singapore and the United States.

The customs data, meanwhile, showed beer imports rising an average of 23.2 percent annually from 2012 to 2014. Exports ...More info on site

Brewery news Botswana: Kgalagadi Breweries Limited explains beer shortage in Botswana
Botswana’s largest brewing company, Kgalagadi Breweries Limited, has come out to explain the acute shortage of beer in in the country, The Monitor reported on August 17.

For the past few days, beer consumers have been facing the agony as some liquor outlets continue to experience shortage of one of the country’s favorite beer brands, the Black Label and Castle Lite 750ml, because of the ongoing maintenance at the local brewery.

In a statement from KBL’s Corporate Communications Manager Mokoro Ketsitlile last week, the company stated that the shortage of beer supply was as a result of a scheduled maintenance for machinery and plant.

“Annually, at this period, KBL as a large manufacturing plant undergoes a scheduled maintenance for machinery and plant.

“A part of this scheduled shutdown period for this year involved the installation of a new labeller,” he explained.

Ketsitlile said despite the scheduled effort to produce and adequately meet demand, this has not been possible over the term owing to below expectation production due to water and electricity supply interruptions.

He also said following measures to re-scale production and pack configurations, production lines are currently in the commissioning stage.

He said as a result, once the maintenance is done, they expect that demand will ...More info on site
