World: Carlsberg plans more job cuts across the globe - source
|
Carlsberg A/S, the world’s fourth-biggest brewer, plans more job cuts across the globe as it struggles to control costs amid tough conditions in markets like Russia and Europe, Bloomberg reported on August 26 citing a person familiar with the matter.
The reductions will number in the hundreds and affect operations in Russia, Western Europe and Asia, said the person, who asked not to be identified as the details and timing of the move have not been finalized. The company has already eliminated about 180 office jobs in its Copenhagen headquarters and in regional outposts to “build a more agile organization,” it said in May.
The maker of Kronenbourg, led by new chief Cees ’t Hart, cut its annual profit forecast last week as it grapples with slumping sales in Russia and slower-than-expected cost savings in Western Europe. Carlsberg plans to makes “all the changes necessary” to cope with the tougher environment, Chief Financial Officer Joern P. Jensen told investors last week.
“Carlsberg has committed to reducing its cost base,” spokesman Jim Daniell said by e-mail. “The program is underway at the company’s central office and in countries, but please understand that we will always speak to employees in the first instance if there

Venezuela: Polar beer shortage makes government increase support for craft beer
|
Venezuela's corporate elite sure know how to hit voters where it hurts, and the hits are now coming in a predictable cycle. Ahead of the 2013 presidential vote, businesses stopped producing sugar. Before the 2013 municipal elections, food manufacturer Polar's iconic pre/baked cornflour mysteriously disappeared from supermarket shelves. Now, Polar's beer has run dry just three months out from the December National Assembly elections, teleSUR reported on August 26.
As usual, Polar is blaming the shortages on the national government: import woes and difficulties obtaining foreign currency. Along with the fact that Polar is one of the largest private recipients of government distributed dollars at preferential rates, the company's own workers say the main cause of the shortage isn’t a lack of production supplies, but political interests. This isn't the first time such allegations have been made. In December 2014, union representatives in the states of Sucre and Anzoategui alleged the company was trying to gag workers who had accused the company of trying to create artificial food shortages. The workers said the company had almost halved production of pre-baked cornflour, amid shortages of the product in some parts of the country.
The purpose behind these shortages is clear: Polar thinks if

India: Young and affluent beer drinkers turn to newer and more exotic brews
|
Before, drinkers in India typically only had a handful of options for a cold pint - Kingfisher and Haywards.
But young and affluent beer drinkers in the country are turning to newer, more exotic brews and opening up a whole new marketplace, Channel NewsAsia reported on August 28.
Mumbai’s first brewpub was launched in 2013 and since then another 50 bars have opened serving locally brewed craft beer. It has industry leaders placing their bets on the growth potential of craft beer.
“People will always demand a better product,” said Shailendra Bist, co-founder of The Independence Brewing Company.
“Craft beers are made with the finest of ingredients. Almost all of them don’t use any chemicals. We don’t use any preservatives plus craft beers also give the consumer a serious variety,” he said.
“People are getting little bored drinking the same lager. If you go into the market, 99 per cent of all beers are the same.”
But while the craft beer industry is gaining popularity there are headwinds, such as rigid state liquor laws, licensing procedures and a lack of skilled labor. These challenges are not putting off the more ambitious brewers though.
"Country-wide, in 2015 we probably are selling close to about 7 million
