Brewery news USA, CO & HI: New Belgium Brewing to expand distribution to Hawaii in February, 2016
New Belgium Brewing is pleased to announce an exclusive partnership agreement with Young’s Market Company, to start selling beer in Hawaii in February, 2016, TheFullPint.com reported on August 27.

New Belgium Brewing will launch with 6-pack bottles of Fat Tire, Ranger IPA, Rampant Imperial IPA and Seasonal Release as well 12-pk cans of Fat Tire and Ranger. Fat Tire bombers and draft Fat Tire, Ranger, Seasonal, and Lips of Faith will round out the initial portfolio offerings.

“New Belgium Brewing is extremely excited to be partnering with Young’s Market Company in the state of Hawaii,” said New Belgium Brewing’s Regional Sales Director, Scotty Prawalsky. “They are a family-owned company with a long history of success on the islands. We are stoked to be working with them to help grow the craft beer scene in the Aloha State.”

Founded in 1888, Young’s Market Company is the premier distributor of fine wines, spirits and selected beverages in the western United States, with operations in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Brewery news USA, CA: Strand Brewing to open new brewhouse in Torrance on October 22
Strand Brewing Company’s co-owners Rich Marcello and Joel Elliot plan to open a new, 36,000 square foot brewhouse in Torrance, Easy Reader News reported on August 27.

Together, the pair have put together one of the South Bay’s first brewing success stories.

State Assemblyman David Hadley named Strand Brewing Company the South Bay’s 2015 Small Business of the Year, calling the company “an early pioneer in what has now become a craft beer renaissance in the South Bay of Los Angeles.”

Marcello went to Sacramento to receive the award, spending the day in the state capital with Hadley.

“From starting in 2009, underfunded, over budget, working two jobs, with no craft beer scene to within six years having someone notice our work enough to give us an award? To win that is an honour,” Marcello said. “It shows that people are noticing the work we’re doing, so we’ll keep our heads down and our sleeves up, grinding away at it.”

After nearly six years in business, the brand that started out as two men and a minivan is moving into their new space with an eye on the future and the thought that this may be Strand Brewing Company’s permanent home.

Near-fanatical dedication to their work ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MO & KS: Kansas City Bier announces $1.5 million production expansion by spring
The Kansas City Bier Company has announced plans to more than double its production capacity and begin bottling beer as part of a $1.5 million expansion, Brewbound.com reported on August 26.

The 18-month-old German-style brewery, based in Kansas City, expects to complete the project next spring. Debt financing for the expansion was provided by Missouri Bank, the company said.

Steve Holle, the brewery’s founder, said demand in the Kansas City metro area, which extends into neighbouring Kansas, has outgrown the company’s production capabilities.

“Sales have been climbing steadily, and we are nearing our production capacity for [draft] beer,” said Holle. “Stores are asking to add packaged beer to their retail shelves. It just seems like the right time to grow.”

Current capacity constraints limit the brewery to producing 6,000 barrels of draft-only beer. Kansas City Bier, which launched in early 2014, sold just 1,450 barrels during its first 12 months and the company is on pace to make 5,000 barrels in 2015. The expansion is expected to double capacity to 12,000 barrels annually.

To spearhead its bottling initiative, Kansas City Bier plans to house its new packaging operation, comprised of a semi-automated keg line and bottle filler, in a property adjacent to the brewery, doubling ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: River North Brewery to move production to a new spot
When it opened in March 2012, River North Brewery set the pace for what was to come in Denver — not just because of its beer, but with its location and its name. In the three and a half years since, another eight breweries have opened in the sometimes loosely defined River North district, and at least four more are on their way. But River North Brewery itself has been forced to leave the area, at least for now, Westword reported on August 26.

River North Brewery’s tap room, at 2401 Blake Street, will close its doors sometime in the last week of October – with the goal of reopening in a new spot in the neighbourhood at some point in the future, says brewery co-founder Matthew Hess. In the meantime, River North Brewery will move its brewhouse, tanks, barrels and packaging line into a 10,000-square-foot warehouse at 6021 Washington Street, where it will put together a new production facility that's twice as big as their old space.

“Eighty to 85 percent of our volume is distributed,” Hess says which is why the business needs to have an operating production facility before it finds a permanent tap room. “We will have ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Rock Cut Brewing Company to open by mid-September
The owners of Rock Cut Brewing Company have announced plans to open their craft beer brewing business by mid-September, Estes Park Trail-Gazette reported on August 26.

The micro brewery business will be located at 390 W. Riverside Dr. in Estes Park.

Matthew Heiser and his partner Tracy Goodemote said on August 20 they hope to open the business somewhere between Aug. 29-30, but no later than Labor Day.

"We want to brew a couple batches first to make sure the beer comes out good before we open," Heiser said.

Heiser and Goodemote, both admitted home brewers, say they have "a passion for good beer" and have been brewing together for the past six to eight years. Heiser said he's also been a brew judge and worked for about nine months with the Estes Park Brewery.

"We're basically home brewers and self-taught," Heiser added.

The partners said they will focus on "classic" styles at the beginning. Heiser said they are currently brewing a German amber and an English porter.

Brewery news USA, CT: Connecticut Valley Brewing Co. to open in South Windsor by next summer
Steve Palauskas and Todd Sullivan are on a mission to brew the best beer in New England, and they're working toward that goal by building a new brewery and tasting room on Sullivan Avenue in South Windsor, Hartford Courant reported on August 27.

The two are getting ready to break ground on a 15,000-square-foot facility for their Connecticut Valley Brewing Co. They hope to be operating by next summer.

"The whole goal is to make the best beer in New England," Sullivan said. He said he wanted the new brewery to be a place "where people want to visit and have an experience they're going to remember."

"South Windsor needed a brewery," Palauskas added. "There's so much room for growth and business opportunity in Connecticut and South Windsor is prime for this, in my opinion."

Palauskas created Connecticut Valley Brewing Co. three years ago and specializes in European- and Bavarian-style lagers. He recently acquired Sullivan's brand, Pioneer Beer Co., which brews mostly American ales, and named him master brewer.

Palauskas called their business partnership "a match made in heaven," adding, "Todd is in charge of the liquid, I'm in charge of everything else."

Sullivan said, "This is perfect, because now I can focus on the thing ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Carlsberg plans more job cuts across the globe - source
Carlsberg A/S, the world’s fourth-biggest brewer, plans more job cuts across the globe as it struggles to control costs amid tough conditions in markets like Russia and Europe, Bloomberg reported on August 26 citing a person familiar with the matter.

The reductions will number in the hundreds and affect operations in Russia, Western Europe and Asia, said the person, who asked not to be identified as the details and timing of the move have not been finalized. The company has already eliminated about 180 office jobs in its Copenhagen headquarters and in regional outposts to “build a more agile organization,” it said in May.

The maker of Kronenbourg, led by new chief Cees ’t Hart, cut its annual profit forecast last week as it grapples with slumping sales in Russia and slower-than-expected cost savings in Western Europe. Carlsberg plans to makes “all the changes necessary” to cope with the tougher environment, Chief Financial Officer Joern P. Jensen told investors last week.

“Carlsberg has committed to reducing its cost base,” spokesman Jim Daniell said by e-mail. “The program is underway at the company’s central office and in countries, but please understand that we will always speak to employees in the first instance if there ...More info on site

Brewery news Venezuela: Polar beer shortage makes government increase support for craft beer
Venezuela's corporate elite sure know how to hit voters where it hurts, and the hits are now coming in a predictable cycle. Ahead of the 2013 presidential vote, businesses stopped producing sugar. Before the 2013 municipal elections, food manufacturer Polar's iconic pre/baked cornflour mysteriously disappeared from supermarket shelves. Now, Polar's beer has run dry just three months out from the December National Assembly elections, teleSUR reported on August 26.

As usual, Polar is blaming the shortages on the national government: import woes and difficulties obtaining foreign currency. Along with the fact that Polar is one of the largest private recipients of government distributed dollars at preferential rates, the company's own workers say the main cause of the shortage isn’t a lack of production supplies, but political interests. This isn't the first time such allegations have been made. In December 2014, union representatives in the states of Sucre and Anzoategui alleged the company was trying to gag workers who had accused the company of trying to create artificial food shortages. The workers said the company had almost halved production of pre-baked cornflour, amid shortages of the product in some parts of the country.

The purpose behind these shortages is clear: Polar thinks if ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Young and affluent beer drinkers turn to newer and more exotic brews
Before, drinkers in India typically only had a handful of options for a cold pint - Kingfisher and Haywards.

But young and affluent beer drinkers in the country are turning to newer, more exotic brews and opening up a whole new marketplace, Channel NewsAsia reported on August 28.

Mumbai’s first brewpub was launched in 2013 and since then another 50 bars have opened serving locally brewed craft beer. It has industry leaders placing their bets on the growth potential of craft beer.

“People will always demand a better product,” said Shailendra Bist, co-founder of The Independence Brewing Company.

“Craft beers are made with the finest of ingredients. Almost all of them don’t use any chemicals. We don’t use any preservatives plus craft beers also give the consumer a serious variety,” he said.

“People are getting little bored drinking the same lager. If you go into the market, 99 per cent of all beers are the same.”

But while the craft beer industry is gaining popularity there are headwinds, such as rigid state liquor laws, licensing procedures and a lack of skilled labor. These challenges are not putting off the more ambitious brewers though.

"Country-wide, in 2015 we probably are selling close to about 7 million ...More info on site
