No time to measure your IBUs?
ABSTRACT
Ethanol, residual extract or carbon dioxide can be measured inline, so why not also Bitter Units? The common method to determine IBUs is to measure the extinction at 275nm from an
iso-octane extract of beer. Although this method has some shortcomings (depending on
the hops used the values can vary quite a bit and the method is unspecific) it is a well
established method in the brewery labs. These German Engineers have developed a inline UVvis
spectroscopy method with a accuracy of +/- 2 IBU. Using an additional multivariate data
analysis, process control can be improved.

India: Beer sales up in state of Kerala due to new liquor policy
|
With the Kerala government enforcing its new liquor policy from the current fiscal that began April 1, the sales of liquor have come down while those of beer have gone up, Newsx reported on September 1.
According to the Kerala State Beverages Corporation, this drop was noticed during the April – June period when compared to the previous fiscal.
"During the current fiscal from April to June, there has been a drop in sales of liquor to the tune of Rs.10.74 lakh as compared to the same period in the previous fiscal," an excise official, who did not wish to be identified, said on September 1.
"Likewise, the sales of beer during the same period went up by Rs.13.50 lakh," the official added.
On account of the new liquor policy, more than 700 bars that used to serve liquor have been closed and today, many of them have licenses to sell only beer and wine.
Liquor is now available in just 24 five-star hotel bars in the state.
Liquor and beer, however, are available in 344 state-run retail shops and here too, every year, 10 percent of them would be closed down as the new liquor policy aims to achieve

Indonesia: Diageo testing Guinness Zero in Asia, brand preforms very well since last year’s launch in Indonesia
|
Diageo is trialling a new, revolutionary non-alcoholic version of the iconic Guinness stout in Asia, as it seeks to counter a growing government campaign against excessive alcohol consumption in the region, Irish Independent reported on August 30.
Guinness Zero has been rolled out in Indonesia, as the fourth most populous country in the world moved to block the sale of beer in convenience stores as part of public health measures to combat excessive drinking. Diageo Ireland said there were no plans to launch the product in Ireland.
"Guinness Zero ABV was launched in September, 2014 in Indonesia, specifically in response to market demand in the non-alcoholic beer category, which is already well established in the market. Guinness Zero ABV has been performing very well since its launch," Diageo told the Sunday Independent.
Sam Fischer, Diageo's president for greater China and Asia, described the government actions as creating "some disruption" in an interview with Bloomberg.
Sales of Guinness rose 1pc in Ireland in the second half of 2014, bringing the brand back to growth for the first time in six years. While Ireland performed strongly, global sales of Guinness sank 4pc on the back of a weaker performance in Nigeria, Indonesia and the UK. The
