No time to measure your IBUs?

ABSTRACT
Ethanol, residual extract or carbon dioxide can be measured inline, so why not also Bitter Units? The common method to determine IBUs is to measure the extinction at 275nm from an iso-octane extract of beer. Although this method has some shortcomings (depending on the hops used the values can vary quite a bit and the method is unspecific) it is a well established method in the brewery labs. These German Engineers have developed a inline UVvis spectroscopy method with a accuracy of +/- 2 IBU. Using an additional multivariate data analysis, process control can be improved.

Brewery news UK & USA: Brewdog to start producing beer at US site soon
Brewdog, an independent craft beer brewery based in Scotland, will start producing beer at a U.S. site, the firm said on September 2 after announcing a £6 million ($9.17 million) mini-bond sale earlier this week, CNCB.com reported.

The Scottish company, which was formed in 2007, said it has bought a 42-acre site in Columbus, Ohio, where it will build a 200 barrel production facility.

"(The U.S.) is a fantastic craft brew market," BrewDog co-founder James Watt told CNBC. "It's really tough for us to service that market from Scotland due to the system and the time it takes to get beer there.

"We are excited to be making our beers in America hopefully sometime late summer next year."

The facility will also allow BrewDog to export craft beer to key markets in Canada and South America.

Brewery news USA: Coors Banquet gaining popularity amid decline of similar mainstream beers
Coors Banquet, first brewed more than 140 years ago, is gaining popularity among young hipsters, Chicago Tribune reported on September 3.

As Coors Banquet appears headed for its ninth straight year of growth, it's also gaining traction among Chicago hipsters and other beer drinkers fond of an old yarn.

Strange but true: As similar domestic mainstream beers continue to decline amid the continued surge of imports and craft beers, Banquet just keeps growing.

The original Coors beer's curious marketing success story is becoming almost a matter of routine, after turning around a more-than-20-year slide in 2006. Leaning on the beer's retro style and its rustic history in the Rocky Mountains, Chicago-based MillerCoors has found gold in them hills — an old beer with a loyal following that's attracting a growing number of drinking-age millennials.

The gains are happening nationally across regional markets, according to market researchers, as well as some Chicago-area distributors and beer buyers who call it a "perfect storm" of marketing savvy and consumer tastes.

"For a brand to be growing across generations, across channels and across regions is really unique and very exciting," said Liz Crews, vice president of professional services at Nielsen, a global information company that monitors consumer behavior.

Brewery news USA, IL: Starved Rock Brewing hoping to be operational in La Salle within the next 18-24 months
A new brewery will be quenching the thirst for local beer in La Salle, mywebtimes.com reported on September 3.

Marci Hughes, who recently purchased a building at 440 First St. that will become the home of Starved Rock Brewing, hopes the brewery will be operational within the next 18 to 24 months.

"It's a conservative estimate," she said. "But especially when we have to do a full build out it makes sense to be cautious with an estimate."

Hughes hopes to outfit the building with environmentally friendly energy sources including solar, wind and geothermal, depending on recommendations from an architect.

"We want to have as small of a footprint as possible," she said. "It is important to us that we are very efficient and green. It doesn't make sense for us not to do that when we are exalting Starved Rock and the natural environment we have here. We want to take care of it."

The empty building, previously a meat market, will need renovations to convert it to a brewery.

Hughes owns Kinderhook Tap, a restaurant and bar in Oak Park, which features a variety of craft beers on tap.

"In 2010, we started a restaurant in Oak Park that only served craft beer," Hughes said. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Temblor Brewing in a rush for soft opening in Bakersfield on September 7
Don Bynum and Tom Maxwell are in the final wild rush to September the 7th’s soft opening of Temblor Brewing, their new craft brewery and restaurant in Bakersfield, The Bakersfield Californian reported on September 2.

The pair are still working their day jobs in real estate and accounting while working mornings and nights at Temblor.

They’ve got a lot to do.

On September 2, kegs of their Streets of Bakersfield IPA, 661 Kolsch and Blister in the Sun Belgian Pale Ale hit Eureka Burger and Moo Creamery.

Head brewer Mike Lathi is finishing up work on the rest of the beers Temblor will have on tap when they open at 11 a.m. on Labor Day — Pierce Road Oatmeal Stout and Under a Blood Orange Sky Belgian Wit with Blood Oranges.

Temblor is also ramping up its kitchen, which will put out a simple menu of burgers, sandwiches, flat bread pizzas, wings, fries and salads. There will be a couple of desserts.

“We'd rather do a few items with expertise than a bunch mediocre,“ Maxwell said. ”I've taste tested everything and really think the community will be impressed with the fare.“

Brewery news USA: AB InBev to expand metal container facility in Jacksonville
Anheuser-Busch InBev on September 2 announced a $170 million expansion project at its Metal Container Corporation (MCC) facility in Jacksonville. As part of the company’s plan to increase production of the popular Budweiser and Bud Light aluminum bottles, the project will create approximately 75 new jobs at the facility.

“We are pleased to maintain such strong partnerships with the city of Jacksonville and state of Florida, where we’ve proudly brewed beers, produced packaging and done business for nearly 50 years,” said Pete Kraemer, Vice President of Supply at Anheuser-Busch. “The growing demand for our Budweiser and Bud Light aluminum bottles has helped drive growth and development in Jacksonville. We appreciate the support of our partners in Florida and thank our employees for their dedication.”

Anheuser-Busch first began producing the aluminum bottles in 2013. Jacksonville will be the second MCC facility to produce them. Anheuser-Busch has also operated a brewery in Jacksonville since 1969.

“Our employees, local leaders and the Jacksonville community have helped make this facility successful,” said Bryan Sullivan, Jacksonville plant manager, Metal Container Corporation. “Selecting Jacksonville as the next site for aluminum bottle production is a tremendous opportunity for our employees and local community as we increase production and add sustainable ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Import beer nearly catch up with Korean beer sales this summer
Thanks to a growing preference for beers with thick and rich flavors among Koreans, import beers have nearly caught up with Korean beers this summer. According to BGF Retail, import beers accounted for 43 percent of beer sales at CU convenience stores in July and August. During the same period, domestic beers stood at 57 percent. In the same period of last year, sales of domestic beers outnumbered import beers 7 to 3, Business Korea reported on September 4.

Sales of import beers have soared as a malt beer fever has gripped the nation. The malt beer is made from 100 percent barley. The beer market, represented by larger, has moved to 100 percent malt beer which is a kind of lager beer but a little heavier. Demand for thick ale is also rising among beer maniacs.

Import beer sales at CU convenience stores rose 33.6 percent in 2013 and 40.6 percent in 2014, respectively. Lately, the curve became sharper. From Jan. to Aug. of this year, they jumped 84.5 percent. By contrast, the growth of domestic beer sales slowed down, with 11 percent in 2013 and 4.6 percent in 2014. This year, it fell 0.1 percent for the first time. ...More info on site
