Let the yeast decide on flavour !
ABSTRACT
Imagine you brew the same beer with the same hopping procedure (same variety, same times of addition) and you just take a different yeast strain for fermentation. How significant would the difference be? We tried it using an American ale yeast (05) in comparison to an Abbaye
yeast. For the hopping, we used Tradition in comparison to Citra. We found that depending
on the hop variety, beers can show a similar (using Tradition) or also a completely different
flavor profile (using Citra) caused by the yeast. Also, different effects on bitterness and
mouthfeel were observed. This is an exciting topic for further sensory research!

USA & Australia: Lagunitas Brewing to pave its way into the Australian market
|
Leading US craft beer brand Lagunitas Brewing will be exploring all its international options with its new co-owner Heineken, says founder Tony Magee.
Lagunitas Brewing is one of America’s top ten craft beers but is not currently available in Australia through official channels, unlike Samuel Adams, Sierra Nevada, Deschutes and Stone.
Drinkers have speculated that Heineken’s involvement paves the way for local distribution, so Australian Brews News asked Lagunitas Brewing’ Tony Magee for his thoughts on the matter.
“We are definitely interested in presenting our beers to beer lovers down under but have not yet decided when that will be,” Magee said.
“We will be exploring all our international options with our new partners in the weeks and months to come.”
Heineken is brewed under licence and distributed in Australia by Lion, which would be unlikely to want an international craft beer brand to add to its already expansive portfolio.
The Dutch brewer also has local ties through Drinkworks, a wholly owned subsidiary of New Zealand’s DB Breweries, which itself is owned by Heineken Asia Pacific.
Drinkworks is the Australian distributor of DB brands including Tui and Monteith’s, as well as Heineken-owned brands Tiger and Bintang.

Canada, ON: Brick Brewing announces a 30 percent increase in its second quarter profits
|
Brick Brewing's second-quarter profits rose 30 per cent despite a difficult summer for beer sales, Waterloo Record reported on September 10.
The Kitchener-based company reported net income of C$579,806 in the three months ended July 26, up from C$445,453 in the same period a year earlier.
Net revenue increased to C$11 million from C$10.4 million, it said on September 10.
Brick Brewing’s representatives said the quarter was challenging because of disappointing weather in July and pricing pressure from mainstream beer brands.
Sales volumes of Brick Beer brands, including Laker, by far the company's main product by volume, fell 1.4 per cent in the second quarter, compared to a year earlier. Sales volumes of its Waterloo craft beers increased 37 per cent.
Brick Brewing’s new brewhouse in Kitchener became operational during the second quarter. The company consolidated all of its operations in its Bingemans Centre Drive facility after selling its Waterloo brewery last fall.

USA, NC & SC: Hi-Wire Brewing to start selling its beers in South Carolina soon
|
One of Asheville’s popular craft breweries will soon be selling its ales and lagers across South Carolina. It is the first time for those beers to be available outside of North Carolina, Greenville News reported on September 10.
Hi-Wire Brewing, which recently opened a second brewery in Asheville to increase production, has added distribution across the Palmetto State, from Charleston and Myrtle Beach to the Upstate. In Greenville, the beer will be distributed by KW Beverage and in Spartanburg by Budweiser of Spartanburg.
“South Carolina is our next door neighbour. We wouldn’t think of passing over it to go elsewhere,” said brewery spokeswoman Abby Dickinson. “Greenville has some killer spots to drink craft beer.” The brewery will begin selling in the Greenville-Spartanburg markets at the end of September. The brewery’s co-owners and sales team will make appearances at tap takeover and beer festivals, Dickinson said.
Hi-Wire Brewing’s will feature its most popular flagships into the Upstate ( Hi-Pitch IPA, Bed of Nails Brown ale, Hi-Wire Lager, Prime-Time Session Ale etc.)
Hi-Wire Brewing opened in June of 2013 in Asheville’s busy South Slope brewing district and quickly became a favourite. This summer, it opened a new production brewery at the edge of Asheville’s Biltmore Village

Canada, ON: Henderson Brewing announces 2016 brewery opening in Toronto
|
A new brewery inspired by Toronto’s beer and brewing history is now under construction in the city’s Junction Triangle neighborhood, with plans to open early next year, Canadian Beer News reported on September 4.
Henderson Brewing is being founded by general manager Steve Himel and brewmaster Mark Benzaquen, two brewing industry veterans with years of experience at both craft and macrobreweries.
The brewery’s name has a dual origin, being inspired by both Robert Henderson, who is believed to be the first commercial brewer in the town of York, with a brewery that opened circa 1800; and Henderson Street, the cross-street at the corner of Clinton Avenue where the historic Monarch Tavern is situated.
The Henderson brewery and taproom is expected to open in the spring of 2016 at 128A Sterling Road. The address is in a primarily industrial area that is currently seeing a large amount of revitalization.

USA, NC: Lynnwood Brewing to take over Blackjack Brewing Company’s Wilmington location in an expansion move
|
Raleigh-based Lynnwood Brewing announced it will be soon moving to Wilmington, an apropos location for a pirate themed place, The Independent Weekly reported on September 8.
Lynnwood Brewing is buying out Blackjack Brewing's Whitaker Mill Road location. Lynnwood Brewing has been looking for an opportunity to expand its operations for quite some time. Lynnwood Grill has been on the Raleigh scene since 2004, though they only added the brewery in 2013. Still, it already offers a wide range of craft brews, including the Hubris Imperial IPA, Once You Go Black IPA and the Kiss My Irish stout.
The purchase will allow Lynnwood Brewing to increase its output by 200 percent and also expand its experiments with barrel-aging by October. There are also plans for the new location to feature a tasting room and beer garden.
Fans of Lynnwood Brewing's Grove Barton Road location shouldn't worry, as its owner Ted Dwyer says this is an expansion, not a move.
“We will continue brewing operations at the restaurant and will make the same beers and more at the Whitaker Mill location,” Dwyer says. “The goal is to expand slowly and maintain our quality and standards throughout. We hope to be canning early next year

USA, PA: Chatty Monks Brewing to expand with a new location in Phoenixville in spring
|
The craft beer brewing industry continues to see strong growth throughout the Greater Lehigh Valley, PA, as evidenced by one of the newest expansions and second locations announced, Lehigh Valley Business reported on September 10.
Chatty Monks Brewing Co., a small-batch craft brewery and restaurant in West Reading, is preparing for expansion after opening in June 2014.
It will open a second, larger location next year in Phoenixville, PA, in addition to expanding its existing space with second-floor seating. The new brewery and restaurant in Phoenixville will occupy the long-vacant 13,000-square-foot space, previously the home of Superior Beverage Co.
With plans to open in spring 2016, the Chatty Monks Brewing team is working with high-end designers, artists and experienced consultants and plans to have about 250 seats in the restaurant.
Aside from the larger seating area in the new Phoenixville space, the new brewing system will allow the brewery to make more beer for distribution, events and their pub.
“The new brewery will have a 15-barrel system with 30- and 15-barrel fermenting tanks,” Norm Eaton, co-owner and master brewer, said in a statement. “Our current setup has a three-barrel system, so I’m excited to see the improvement and higher yield in action.”

USA, MI: Petoskey Brewing Company strikes distribution deal with Fabiano Brothers Distribution
|
The Petoskey Brewing Company has partnered with Fabiano Brothers Distribution, UpNorthLive.com reported on September 11.
The partnership will bring beer from one of northern Michigan's most well known breweries to an additional eleven counties.
In June, the company installed several new tanks for making beer, which doubled their product output.
Since increasing their output, the owners of the company have been searching for more distribution outlets, allowing them to get their products into the hands of their fans in the central and southern parts of the state.
"We've developed a very good brand name," said Petoskey Brewing Company’s Co-Owner Patrick Dowd. "So the combination of our beers with our expansion and production as well as our really talented brew staff has allowed us to garner this reputation downstate."
The first shipment of 1,500 cases was sent down last week. It included dozens of cases of the Petoskey Brewing Company’s most popular items like their Sparkling Lager.
The Petoskey Brewing Company is currently able to produce about 500 barrels of beer a month.

Canada, NU: Permit approved for Iqaluit microbrewery to produce and sell its beer in Nunavut
|
The decision was expected to take weeks, but it took the Nunavut Liquor Licensing Board less than 24 hours to approve a permit for a microbrewery in Iqaluit, CBC.ca reported on September 10.
The board held a public hearing on September 9 to consider the Nunavut Brewing Company Limited's application to start producing and selling beer in the territory.
A permit issued by Nunavut's Liquor Licensing Board will allow the Nunavut Brewing Company to sell its craft beers to the territory's Liquor Commission or export them outside of Nunavut. However, it does not allow direct sales to consumers or on the premises.
City council approved the company's plan in July, but it still needed the go-ahead from the licensing board.
About a dozen people attended September 9's public meeting and not one of them opposed the project.
"This is the easiest public consultation I've ever heard," said board chair David Wilman on September 9.
In its written decision, the board said it deliberated on the application and, with no objections received, decided to approve it.
It pointed to the fact that the Nunavut Brewing Company intends to employ up to 10 local residents in its operations.
"We're very pleased with the board's decision and are excited to

USA, WI: Westallion Brewing Co. to open in West Allis on April 23
|
When Westallion Brewing Co. opens next year, it will be West Allis' very first brewing company. Erik and Kim Dorfner are the husband-and-wife team behind the venture and they hope to open the brewery on April 23, 2016, which is the 500-year anniversary of Reinheitsgrebot, the German "Beer Purity Law," OnMilwaukee.com reported on September 10.
The trademark on the name has not been finalized, so the Dorfners are currently calling the company "Stallion Brewing Co."
"The 'Westallion' name should be finalized this week," says Erik.
Westallion Brewing Co. will open in a former storage facility at 1825 S. 72nd St. in West Allis. The 6,000-square foot space will feature a brewery, a tasting room and eventually a beer garden.
Westallion Brewing Co. will start with eight different beers, including German- and British- style beers along with a seasonal and a "historic" brew. Erik, who has a history degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, wants to brew a variety of the "lost" beers that disappeared during Reinheitsgrebot.
"A lot of beers became extinct during the German Purity Law, and we are going to attempt to recreate them," he says.
Westallion Brewing’s beers will also be available in liquor stores and in 10 West Allis-based bars, five of

|
John and Mary Powers, owners of HomeGrown Brewing Company, plan to serve craft beer in the former Veterans Memorial Civic Center, 28 N. Washington St. in Oxford Charter Township in 2016, The Detroit News reported on September 9.
John Powers, the head brewer, was bit by the brewing bug a decade ago after his son introduced him to the craft. Marie will oversee the kitchen, and their three children will also be on staff both behind the scenes and front-of-house.
Plans for the old vet hall include seasonal, experimental and approachable beers and a full menu.

Canada, MB: Farmery Estate Brewery to open brewing facility by next spring
|
Almost three years after launching with beer brewed under contract, Farmery Estate Brewery has announced that it has obtained a location for its own brewery and tasting room, Canadian Beer News reported on September 4.
Farmery Estate Brewery’s co-owners and brothers Chris and Lawrence Warwaruk have purchased a 15,000 square foot building in Winnipeg, several kilometres from their family farm, where they are growing barley and hops to be used in making their beer.
The duo will be taking possession of the building later in September, and expect to have brewing equipment installed within a few months, with an aim to be open to the public by next spring.

World: Tibet’s Lhasa Beer has global aspirations
|
Lhasa Beer, the only Tibetan beer available, has global aspirations and wants to take its brew to pubs and people around the world, CCTV reported on September 9.
Though Tibet is not the first region that comes to mind when you think about beer, the Lhasa Brewery Company said that it hopes to export its beer to other countries in Southeast Asia, as well as new markets in the U.S. and Europe in the future.
Sold in cans and bottles under the slogan, “Beer from the roof of the world,” the beverage uses mainly Himalayan spring water, barley and yeast as ingredients. Around 30 percent of the malt content is derived from the huskless native Tibetan barley.
The area around the town of Gyantse in southern Tibet is known as the homeland of green barley, and produces a high yield of the crop.
“Altogether, beer production reached 140,000 tons last year, which is an increase of 10 percent to 12 percent year on year,” said Norbu Tsering, General Manager of Tiandi Green Beverage Dev’t Company, the company that distributes the beer.
“We are selling the beer not only in Tibet, but also to other major cities across China.”

Vietnam: Brewers oppose proposed increase in special consumption tax on imported goods
|
Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance has proposed to increase special consumption tax on imported goods to ensure fair competition between locally manufactured products and imported ones, Viet Nam News reported on September 10.
Under the current regulations, the special consumption tax on imported goods is calculated keeping in mind their cost, insurance, and freight (CIF) value plus current import tariff.
However, the ministry said the import tax on automobiles and air-conditioners would be lowered to zero under the country's commitment to international integration. The current special consumption tax on imported goods would not ensure fairness between local and imported items. It could become vulnerable for importers to take advantage of the tax cut for transfer pricing, causing losses to the State budget and making domestic producers less competitive.
Therefore, it proposed to revise the regulations by adding domestic sale fee on importers. The domestic sale fee should be calculated on the basis of fees paid for services such as packing, managing, advertising, displaying, transporting, and the warranty plus interest of tax payers.
However, the new calculation faced strong opposition from several businesses as the special consumption tax on the imported goods could be increased by 15 per cent from current levels.

Tanzania: Heineken launches 500ml bottle
|
Heineken has announced plans to expand its portfolio through the launch of its iconic beer in 500ml bottle in Tanzania, East African Business Week reported on September 9.
“Judging from the approving comments and smiling faces we received after our initial survey, we are confident that the 500 ml will be able to take on other premium SKU’s of the same quantity,” Michael Mbungu, the Country Manager of Heineken Tanzania, said.
As an international premium beer brand, Heineken continues to increase its footprint in the regional market, and the latest innovation aims to appeal to a wider range of beer lovers and initiate them to the premium beer category.
Mbungu said they had conducted research amongst Tanzanian beer consumers and had received positive feedback regarding the launch of the 500 ml Heineken bottle.
