How emotional is beer drinking ?
ABSTRACT
This question was investigated by an Italian/Polish research team. The study examined emotional responses to real (tasted, in real social environment of consumption) and conceptual (food names) food stimuli. Different studies were conducted using the list of emotion words (EsSense™) developed by King and Meiselman. Emotions that were elicited by the named beers and wines varied slightly in kind and largely in degree between Poles and Italians. The strongest emotional response was observed in the Polish panel for both stimuli. These results are of interest for new products in both categories (wine or beer). I wonder, how could you NOT be emotional about beer ?

China: AB InBev-SABMiller merger may force Tsingtao to fight harder for survival
|
The potential megamerger between Anheuser-Busch InBev and SABMiller lifted shares of beer makers globally, but one brewer’s rally seems misguided, The Wall Street Journal reported on September 18.
Shares of Tsingtao Brewery, China’s second-biggest beer maker, rose sharply on September 17 on hopes that the creation of a global beer giant would reduce competition in the industry, and hence put a halt to its sliding business. But that seems unlikely.
A combined AB InBev-SABMiller would control over 40% of China’s beer market, boosting a portfolio of brands including Snow, the world’s largest-selling beer, in addition to top sellers Harbin Beer and Budweiser.
To face off against such a giant, Tsingtao would either have to spend more on marketing to retain market share or go on a buying spree to achieve growth.
And though Tsingtao appears to have gained market share in the past few years, the brewer has been losing out where it truly matters—in the premium segment. There, Tsingtao’s market share fell to 10.7% last year from 15.3% in 2009, according to Euromonitor, while AB InBev’s rose to nearly 50% from 45%.
The market-share loss has intensified this year as sales volume of Tsingtao’s principal brand—considered premium—fell 6.6% in the first half, while AB

China: China Resources Enterprise shares rise to their highest in three months on news of AB InBev’s takeover proposal to SABMiller
|
China Resources Enterprise Ltd. rose to its highest in three months as Anheuser-Busch InBev NV’s planned offer to buy the Hong Kong-based beermaker’s partner SABMiller Plc could help boost sales and yield cost savings in China thanks to a boosted combined market share, Bloomberg reported on September 17.
China Resources rose as much as 5.9 percent to HK$26 in Hong Kong trading, the highest intraday level since June 19, while the Hang Seng Index climbed 1 percent. SABMiller has a 49 percent stake in a joint venture with China Resources to produce the country’s best-selling Snow Beer.
If AB InBev succeeds in buying SABMiller and manages to retain the Snow Beer partnership, "this could be a game changer for China’s beer industry, as the two players would control 42 percent market share, yielding significant sales and cost synergies,” Goldman Sachs Group Inc. analyst Lisa Deng wrote in a note.
Snow Beer had a 21 percent share of China’s beer market by volume last year, followed by Tsingtao Brewery Co. and Beijing Yanjing Brewery Co., according to data from market researcher Euromonitor International. AB InBev’s beer brands - Harbin, Budweiser and Sedrin - were ranked fourth, sixth and seventh in China, the data showed.

The Czech Republic: Czech brewers to follow closely negotiations between AB InBev and SABMiller
|
A proposed mega-deal between the world’s first and second biggest brewers will be closely followed in the Czech Republic with premier export brewer Plzeňský Prazdroj directly concerned and the longer term fate of Budějovický Budvar also probably in play, Radio Prague reported on September 17.
The prospect of one of the biggest Czech brewers falling into the hands of a multinational partly dominated by US beer maker Anheuser-Busch has just got a lot nearer. The twist this time is that we’re not talking about state-owned Budějovický Budvar, which has long battled the US brewer in courts worldwide over the rights to use the Budvar name, but Plzeňský Prazdroj.
Plzeň’s world renowned brewery currently belongs to the Anglo-South African multinational SABMiller. But Anheuser-Busch InBev, a US-Belgian marriage which formed the world’s biggest brewer, has announced that it would like to table an offer for SABMiller. Far from brushing off the approach, SABMiller says that it prepared to examine any proposals that would improve efficiency and the company’s performance.
The approach from the Belgo—Brazilian-US brewing giant for this mega takeover is based on its ambitions to boost its market share in Africa and the fast expanding markets of Africa. SABMiller has a strong hand in

Canada: Ottawa’s booming craft brew industry faces challenges of an ever-changing market
|
Ottawa’s burgeoning craft beer industry can’t afford to rest on its laurels if it hopes to thrive in an age of foreign competition and falling overall consumption, Paul Meek, the co-owner of the city’s largest brewery said on September 17.
“This is still a very, very young industry and I still think a very fragile industry,” Kichesippi Beer Co.’s founder Paul Meek told an audience of businesspeople during a presentation at the Sheraton Ottawa. “The reality is that it’s not as easy as it looks.”
The number of breweries in the region has jumped from two when Kichesippi Beer Co. was launched in 2010 to 15 today, mirroring a national trend. There were 520 breweries in Canada last year, up from just 90 in 2004.
Overall beer sales, however, have remained flat over the past decade. Meanwhile, foreign brews keep gaining in market share, from less than five per cent in 1994 to 14 per cent in 2014.
In contrast, craft brewers still account for less than five per cent of overall sales in the province.
“What’s great to see is all those numbers (of local breweries) are growing,” Meek said. “What’s great is there’s a lot more selection. The problem is that we’re just
