How emotional is beer drinking ?

ABSTRACT
This question was investigated by an Italian/Polish research team. The study examined emotional responses to real (tasted, in real social environment of consumption) and conceptual (food names) food stimuli. Different studies were conducted using the list of emotion words (EsSense™) developed by King and Meiselman. Emotions that were elicited by the named beers and wines varied slightly in kind and largely in degree between Poles and Italians. The strongest emotional response was observed in the Polish panel for both stimuli. These results are of interest for new products in both categories (wine or beer). I wonder, how could you NOT be emotional about beer ?

Brewery news Canada: Ottawa’s booming craft brew industry faces challenges of an ever-changing market
Ottawa’s burgeoning craft beer industry can’t afford to rest on its laurels if it hopes to thrive in an age of foreign competition and falling overall consumption, Paul Meek, the co-owner of the city’s largest brewery said on September 17.

“This is still a very, very young industry and I still think a very fragile industry,” Kichesippi Beer Co.’s founder Paul Meek told an audience of businesspeople during a presentation at the Sheraton Ottawa. “The reality is that it’s not as easy as it looks.”

The number of breweries in the region has jumped from two when Kichesippi Beer Co. was launched in 2010 to 15 today, mirroring a national trend. There were 520 breweries in Canada last year, up from just 90 in 2004.

Overall beer sales, however, have remained flat over the past decade. Meanwhile, foreign brews keep gaining in market share, from less than five per cent in 1994 to 14 per cent in 2014.

In contrast, craft brewers still account for less than five per cent of overall sales in the province.

“What’s great to see is all those numbers (of local breweries) are growing,” Meek said. “What’s great is there’s a lot more selection. The problem is that we’re just ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC & CO: Oskar Blues Brewery reports strong earnings growth in 2015
Oskar Blues Brewery, the first craft brewery in the United States to brew and hand-can their beer in November 2002, continues explosive growth in 2015. The brewery earned a position in the top half of the Inc. 5000’s list of the fastest-growing private companies in America for the fifth year in a row, TheFullPint.com reported on September 17.

Colorado’s funky and unapologetic brew-pub has grown to become the largest American craft brewery to package beer exclusively in cans, while reaching towards 200,000 barrels in 2015. The brewery climbed to 24th position on the Brewers Association’s Top 50 Breweries list which ranks craft breweries based on beer sales volume.

Growth continues to be fuelled at both East and West Oskar Blues’s breweries. The North Carolina brewery in Brevard added a second 50-barrel mash tun and is in process of completing the second phase of its 17,000 square foot expansion project. The Colorado brewery acquired an additional 60,000 square feet last year in Longmont and is increasing capacity and developing an Oak Aging event venue.

In addition to capacity increases, strong double digit growth of Dale’s Pale Ale including a 43% YTD growth trend in Total U.S. Food (Scans) has led the way. In fact, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AL: Goat Island Brewing to open as Cullman's first brewery in January
Cullman will get its first brewery early next year, AL.com reported on September 16.

Partners Mike Mullaney, John Dean, Gery Teichmiller and Brad Glenn are working to open Goat Island Brewing in a 10,000 square feet location at 1646 John H Cooper Drive SE in Cullman.

The group is made up of brewers from the now defunct Blue Moose Cafe, Cullman's first and only brewpub.

The group still needs to get federal and state permits, but hopes to be up and running in January. The taproom portion of the brewery will be about 2,200 square feet.

The name is in reference to Goat Island on Smith Lake.

"We all grew up on Smith Lake, everybody in Cullman knows about Goat Island," Mullaney said.

The brewery is starting with three beers for distribution: the Palomino Pale Ale (named for a historic Palomino Motel and Restaurant), the vanilla bourbon porter and the Richter's Pilsner.

Dean had an insurance business and a client who collected Cullman memorabilia. The client had a photograph with writing in German and English - it turned out to be written by William Richter, an ancestor of Mullaney's wife - and it was a beer recipe.

"It's a really delicious German Pilsner," Mullaney ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ & NM: SanTan Brewing announces distribution partnership with Admiral Beverage in New Mexico
Chandler-based SanTan Brewing Company introduces its new partnership with Admiral Beverage. Set to bring SanTan Brewing’s uniquely Southwestern Style Ales including Mr. Pineapple Wheat Beer, Devil’s Ale, HopShock IPA, and Sex Panther Double Chocolate Porter to the New Mexico craft beer scene, Admiral Beverage is excited to add SanTan Brewing’s beers to its portfolio, Brewbound.com reported on September 17.

“Admiral Beverage from New Mexico, is so happy to be partners with SanTan Brewing. Anthony Canecchia is a true artist; he is one of the best brewers in America. New Mexicans can’t wait for his beer to arrive,” said Greg Brown, Admiral Beverage’s general manager.

Open since 2007 under the leadership of founder and brewmaster, Anthony Canecchia, SanTan Brewing Company has established a strong reputation as one of Arizona’s favourite craft breweries. SanTan Brewing Company continues to be one of the fastest growing craft breweries in USA. Earlier this month, SanTan Brewing unveiled a fresh new look. After eight years of rapid growth and expansion, SanTan Brewing has launched a refreshed brand that is fun yet mature, cohesive and visually stunning, a perfect complement to its Southwestern Style Ales. While the fresh look is expected to spread across Arizona in the next couple ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN & KY: Floyd County Brewing and 3rd Turn Brewing to launch by the end of Louisville’s Craft Beer Week
Two craft breweries are set to open at the end of Louisville’s Craft Beer Week (September 11-20), The Courier-Journal reported on September 17.

Floyd County Brewing in New Albany, which has run on a limited schedule since September 8, will start its full-time hours on September 18, while 3rd Turn Brewing in Jeffersontown opens its doors for the first time on September 18 during the city's annual Gaslight Festival.

Floyd County Brewing’s owner Brian Hampton and 3rd Turn Brewing’s brewmaster Ben Shinkle both said they have been working on their respective breweries nonstop and that they're happy to see the buildings completed.

"It took forever," Hampton said. "It's pretty exhausting right now, but we have a full staff, a pretty good crew. They're pulling together right now."

Earlier this summer, Hampton had said he hoped to open Floyd County Brewing by July with the help of head brewer Josh Hill. But he faced a setback when Hill left the position to return to his previous employer at New Albanian Brewing Company. Hampton has since hired experienced brewer Jeff Coe to lead the beer side of the business.

When it opens on September 18, Floyd County Brewing will offer at least five of its own beers ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: Blue Ridge Brewing Co. to expand with a second location in Greer by the end of the year
Officials hope a well-known Greenville restaurant and brewery’s decision to open a location in Greer could stir a new buzz downtown, Spartanburg Herald Journal reported on September 17.

Greenville’s Blue Ridge Brewing Co. will bring its second location to 308 Trade St. in downtown Greer. Greer officials said the brewpub is scheduled to open in the space formerly occupied by The Cazbah restaurant sometime before the end of this year.

“I think it will be a good fit for our downtown,” said Kyle Mensing, director of commercial development with the Greer Development Corporation.

Mensing said Bob Hiller, owner and founder of Blue Ridge Brewing, chose Greer because he saw the city as an attractive market.

“I think it was partially because Hiller has previous experience with some restaurants in Greer and was connected to that property,” Mensing said.

Geer residents are being lured downtown by the intoxicating taste of craft beers. Therefore downtown Greer will boast Blue Ridge Brewing’s second location.

“The craft beer craze is taking the country, and the Upstate, and now is starting to take downtown (Greer),” Mensing said.

Traffic for drivers passing through downtown isn’t expected to change much along Trade Street, Mensing said, but foot traffic should increase. He said ...More info on site

Brewery news China: AB InBev-SABMiller merger may force Tsingtao to fight harder for survival
The potential megamerger between Anheuser-Busch InBev and SABMiller lifted shares of beer makers globally, but one brewer’s rally seems misguided, The Wall Street Journal reported on September 18.

Shares of Tsingtao Brewery, China’s second-biggest beer maker, rose sharply on September 17 on hopes that the creation of a global beer giant would reduce competition in the industry, and hence put a halt to its sliding business. But that seems unlikely.

A combined AB InBev-SABMiller would control over 40% of China’s beer market, boosting a portfolio of brands including Snow, the world’s largest-selling beer, in addition to top sellers Harbin Beer and Budweiser.

To face off against such a giant, Tsingtao would either have to spend more on marketing to retain market share or go on a buying spree to achieve growth.

And though Tsingtao appears to have gained market share in the past few years, the brewer has been losing out where it truly matters—in the premium segment. There, Tsingtao’s market share fell to 10.7% last year from 15.3% in 2009, according to Euromonitor, while AB InBev’s rose to nearly 50% from 45%.

The market-share loss has intensified this year as sales volume of Tsingtao’s principal brand—considered premium—fell 6.6% in the first half, while AB ...More info on site

Brewery news China: China Resources Enterprise shares rise to their highest in three months on news of AB InBev’s takeover proposal to SABMiller
China Resources Enterprise Ltd. rose to its highest in three months as Anheuser-Busch InBev NV’s planned offer to buy the Hong Kong-based beermaker’s partner SABMiller Plc could help boost sales and yield cost savings in China thanks to a boosted combined market share, Bloomberg reported on September 17.

China Resources rose as much as 5.9 percent to HK$26 in Hong Kong trading, the highest intraday level since June 19, while the Hang Seng Index climbed 1 percent. SABMiller has a 49 percent stake in a joint venture with China Resources to produce the country’s best-selling Snow Beer.

If AB InBev succeeds in buying SABMiller and manages to retain the Snow Beer partnership, "this could be a game changer for China’s beer industry, as the two players would control 42 percent market share, yielding significant sales and cost synergies,” Goldman Sachs Group Inc. analyst Lisa Deng wrote in a note.

Snow Beer had a 21 percent share of China’s beer market by volume last year, followed by Tsingtao Brewery Co. and Beijing Yanjing Brewery Co., according to data from market researcher Euromonitor International. AB InBev’s beer brands - Harbin, Budweiser and Sedrin - were ranked fourth, sixth and seventh in China, the data showed.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Czech brewers to follow closely negotiations between AB InBev and SABMiller
A proposed mega-deal between the world’s first and second biggest brewers will be closely followed in the Czech Republic with premier export brewer Plzeňský Prazdroj directly concerned and the longer term fate of Budějovický Budvar also probably in play, Radio Prague reported on September 17.

The prospect of one of the biggest Czech brewers falling into the hands of a multinational partly dominated by US beer maker Anheuser-Busch has just got a lot nearer. The twist this time is that we’re not talking about state-owned Budějovický Budvar, which has long battled the US brewer in courts worldwide over the rights to use the Budvar name, but Plzeňský Prazdroj.

Plzeň’s world renowned brewery currently belongs to the Anglo-South African multinational SABMiller. But Anheuser-Busch InBev, a US-Belgian marriage which formed the world’s biggest brewer, has announced that it would like to table an offer for SABMiller. Far from brushing off the approach, SABMiller says that it prepared to examine any proposals that would improve efficiency and the company’s performance.

The approach from the Belgo—Brazilian-US brewing giant for this mega takeover is based on its ambitions to boost its market share in Africa and the fast expanding markets of Africa. SABMiller has a strong hand in ...More info on site
