Are hops the isinglass of tomorrow ?
ABSTRACT
Here is a new aspect of our favourite plant! These British researchers found that hops
contain active fining compounds. Extracts of hop cones were shown to have the capacity to
flocculate yeast, resulting in their sedimentation. This activity has been identified
in extracts of many different hop varieties and especially in spent hops - the co-product
resulting from commercial extraction of hops with either CO2 or ethanol. The compounds
responsible for the fining activity appear to be large polyphenols (30 to 100kDa, or higher).
Preliminary data indicate that addition of the finings at optimal dose rates has minimal
impact on the organoleptic properties of beer. Isn't this a relief to all fishes that hops can do their job in beer?

Australia: Lion not in contact with AB InBev regarding the future of Corona distribution rights yet
|
Stuart Irvine, the boss of Australia’s biggest brewer, Lion, has not been in contact with Belgium’s Anheuser-Busch InBev to discuss the future of his exclusive local distribution rights to its top-selling Corona beer since its audacious takeover play for rival SABMiller last week, The Australian reported on September 22.
Corona is Australia’s fourth biggest selling beer, with Lion winning the local rights to the brand three years ago after SABMiller swallowed up the then rights holder, Foster’s, for A$12 billion.
But with AB InBev now circling SABMiller to create a A$382 billion beer giant, a portfolio of international beers, including Corona, could now be reshuffled to align with the new corporate realties of the global brewing industry.
“We have not been specifically in touch with them because there is no need to, because we are just controlling what we need to control,’’ Mr Irvine said.
Mr Irvine declined to detail the contract he has with AB InBev to distribute Corona, which was recently renewed in June for a number of years, or if there was any clauses triggering compensation payments if AB InBev decided to seize back the beer brand.
“Actually this AB InBev merger has been rumoured a lot over the last few years

India: Vijay Mallya says beer should be treated as non-alcoholic beverage
|
Beer should be treated as a non-alcoholic beverage to boost its consumption across the country, United Breweries Ltd chairman Vijay Mallya was quoted as saying by Deccan Herald on September 22.
"As beer has only five percent alcohol unlike 40 percent in hard liquor or spirits, it is irrational to charge the same prohibitive tax on both the beverages," Mallya told shareholders at the company's 16th AGM here.
Noting that the per capita consumption of beer in India was two litres as against 27 litres globally, Mallya said, as a result, beer contributed five percent to the total alcohol consumed across the country, with 280 million cases sold in 2015 as against 100 million cases in 2005.
As a leader in the low-alcoholic beverage, UBL has 52 percent market share in the country, with its nearest rival having less than half of its share.
Seeking a rational regulatory and taxation policy on beer, the liquor baron said unlike in India, beer was the preferred beverage of choice in most of the world, especially for young consumers and ranked third among all beverages after water and tea.
"Decades of perverse taxation policy that equates spirits and beer had resulted in beer being prohibitively expensive as a

South Korea: Chinese beer becoming very popular in South Korea
|
Chinese beer is becoming popular in the Korean market. According industry officials, the current leader is Tsingtao, a beer that first appeared on Korean shores in 2000, The Korea Bizwire reported on September 22.
Tsingtao’s roots trace back to 1903, when a brewery was established in Qingdao, China with German equipment and technology. It became the biggest Chinese beer export in 2011, and is now sold in 80 countries around the world, including Japan, Germany, France and the U.S.
Tsingtao is also popular in the Korean market, along with the Netherlands’ Heineken, America’s Budweiser and Japan’s Asahi.
According to Lotte Mart, sales of Tsingtao from January to August this year ranked third after Heineken and Asahi Super Dry. During the latter half of last year, Tsingtao ranked #1, grabbing 43.8 percent of the imported beer market, and topping sales of Budweiser and Miller.
Thanks to the popularity of Tsingtao, Harbin Beer will also enter the Korean market. OB Beer is planning to launch Harbin before the end of the year.
Harbin Beer is a product that AB InBev, the parent company of OB Beer, is selling in China. Based on sales, it ranks third in China, and 8th in the global market.

Iran: Iran cancels import duties on wheat and barley
|
Iran has cancelled import duties it imposed on wheat and barley in July, according to an official document seen by Reuters on September 22.
The document said the import duties ended on Sept. 6 for wheat and on Aug. 22 for barley. It gave no reason for the cancellation.
The Iranian government imposed a wheat duty of 1,500 rials per kilo, or about USD50 a tonne, a level that rendered wheat imports commercially unfeasible.
The government had originally said the wheat duty would last for one year and the barley until Sept. 22.
The cancellation comes despite a statement by the government in August saying that it did not need to import wheat this year.
“Russian ships have not been offloaded in the previous two weeks, possibly because they were waiting for the tax to be removed soon. After they complete offloading and finish checks at the customs, one can expect a spike in export activity to Iran,” a Russian industry source said.
Iran was the third largest buyer of Russian wheat last marketing year after Turkey and Egypt.
The import duties had applied to all private sector importers, traders and mills but not to the state import agencies Government Trading Corporation of Iran (GTC) or the

Australia: Western Australia farmers try growing hops
|
While vineyards can be spotted far and wide around southern Western Australia, towering hops bines are quite rare, abc.net.au reported on September 22.
Despite the growing number of boutique breweries across the state, fresh, or even locally grown hops are hard to source.
But with paddock-to-plate, or farm-to-glass, very much in-vogue, there are some producers looking to fill that supply gap.
With five generations of dairy and cattle farming behind him, and a job at a Margaret River craft beer brewery, Hamish Coates saw an opportunity to grow hops for local beer.
Mr Coates has already trialled hops in pots on the family farm at Jindong, in Western Australia's south-west.
He is now growing a 120 plant crop that will produce approximately 300 grams per plant initially and will increase to about one kilogram per plant over the next two to three years.
The hops will be grown on 12, five-metre high posts that will form a trellis for the long stem, or bine, of the hops to climb over.
Hops are predominantly grown in the eastern states, with Australia's largest producers located in Victoria and Tasmania.
With only very small quantities of hops grown in WA, Mr Coates said many local breweries sourced dried product from interstate
