Are hops the isinglass of tomorrow ?
ABSTRACT
Here is a new aspect of our favourite plant! These British researchers found that hops
contain active fining compounds. Extracts of hop cones were shown to have the capacity to
flocculate yeast, resulting in their sedimentation. This activity has been identified
in extracts of many different hop varieties and especially in spent hops - the co-product
resulting from commercial extraction of hops with either CO2 or ethanol. The compounds
responsible for the fining activity appear to be large polyphenols (30 to 100kDa, or higher).
Preliminary data indicate that addition of the finings at optimal dose rates has minimal
impact on the organoleptic properties of beer. Isn't this a relief to all fishes that hops can do their job in beer?

UK: UK alcohol consumption down 19% since 2004, but number of brewers rises to 1,700 last year - report
|
UK alcohol consumption has dropped 19% since its 2004 peak and remained stable in 2014, according to the Annual Statistical Handbook from the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA).
The UK is ranked 19th in EU per-capita alcohol consumption, according to the report.
In 2014/15, Government tax receipts from alcohol sales (made up of excise duties and VAT) reached a new high of GBP18.4 bln (US$28 bln), claimed the BBPA. Revenues from beer made up 34% of the total at GBP6.2 bln. The BBPA said there is still scope to cut beer duties in the country, outlining that the duty paid on each UK pint remains the second highest in the EU at GBP0.522, trailing Finland at GBP0.646.
"The duty rate in the UK is now an astonishing 14 times that in Europe’s largest beer market, Germany," said the BBPA.
The number of breweries in the country, meanwhile, has risen to 1,700 in 2014 from 500 in 2000. The BBPA also reported the first annual rise in UK beer sales since 2004, with sales up 1.3% in 2014.

Angola: Chinese-Angolan brewery says its first beer is selling very well in Angola
|
Luanda Brewery Limited’s plant, with an investment of 180 million U.S. dollars from the Hong Kong-based China International Fund (CIF), started production in October 2014.
"The plant has a full annual production capacity of 100,000 kilolitres. With its fine quality and lower price, Bela beer sells very well in Angola," Buhe Bater, director general of the Luanda Brewery Limited, said, adding that introduced into market in March 2015, Bela makes a hit in shopping malls, hotels and restaurants in the capital city of Luanda and other provinces of Angola in recent months.
"We have established sale networks in all the 18 provinces of Angola," said Bater.
CIF, known in Angola for its major business as infrastructure construction, ventures into the manufacture sector in line with Angola's aspiration of diversifying its oil-dependent economy.
Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos said on many occasions that Angola welcomed foreign investment and advanced technologies to kick off the industrialization process, diversify the oil-dependent national economy, and to reduce the unemployment rate in the country which hovered at over 20 percent.
The plant, one of the largest enterprises in Angola, employed over 150 Angolans to work side by side with Chinese technicians.

Japan: Tax authorities dismiss Sapporo’s claim for return of 11.5 bln yen return in liquor tax

Japan’s tax authorities have dismissed an objection filed by Sapporo Breweries Ltd. calling for the return of ¥11.5 billion in liquor tax that the company paid on its Goku Zero beer-like beverage, The Japan Times reported on September 24.
Sapporo Breweries will decide its response after listening to opinions from outside experts, said officials at Sapporo Holdings Ltd., the parent of the Japanese beer-maker.
Within about one month, the group will decide whether to bring the dispute to the National Tax Tribunal, which could potentially take months to reach its conclusion.
Lawyers, certified public accountants and former tax officials serve as judges at the tribunal. Those dissatisfied with the rulings can file lawsuits against the judgments.
In June 2013, Sapporo Breweries launched Goku Zero as a third-segment beer-like alcoholic product free from purine and sugar. But it stopped production after tax authorities began investigating details of its production method to confirm the tax-related classification of the product in 2014.
After reviewing the production method, Sapporo Breweries relaunched the Goku Zero as a happoshu quasi-beer with low malt content, to which a higher tax rate than third-tier beverages is applied, and paid liquor tax of ¥11.5 billion as the difference in levies.

Nepal: Government allows restaurants to run microbreweries
|
Nepal’s government has decided to issue permits for restaurants to operate microbreweries, allowing production of a maximum of 2,500 hectolitres of beer annually, The Himalayan Times reported on September 24.
A meeting of the Industrial Promotion Board (IPB), held recently, took a decision to allow operation of microbreweries in the country.
In a bid to categorise restaurants with microbreweries under tourism industry, the Board has also decided to recommend government to publish a notice in Nepal Gazette, as per Maheshwor Neupane, director general of the Department of Industry (DoI). Once the government publishes the notice in the Gazette, interested companies will be able to get a licence to run microbreweries.
Any restaurant with a seating capacity of at least 20 people can apply for the licence of a microbrewery. “A fee of Rs two lakh has been fixed for each licence,” said Neupane. He said that the microbreweries would be registered under DoI for operation after needful Initial Environmental Examination (IEE).
The meeting of the IPB has decided to request the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment to make the necessary provision to conduct IEE.
The Board, which is headed by Minister for Industry Mahesh Basnet, has also set criteria to establish the microbreweries.

Ireland: Winter barley acreage set to increase again this year
|
Ireland’s winter barley acreage looks set to increase again in 2015, according to Teagasc crop agronomist John Pettit.
“Malting barley growers had to sow winter crops last year for the first time, simply to keep themselves compliant from a Greening perspective,” he was quoted as saying by AgriLand on September 23.
“And this trend is like to continue in the 2015/16 growing season. As a consequence, the tonnages of feed barley available in Ireland this year has increased.
“This is a direct consequence of winter barley crops being higher yielding than their spring counterparts. This trend has also been replicated throughout the rest of the EU.”
Pettit confirmed that six-row hybrid winter barley varieties are becoming more popular with Irish grain growers.
“They certainly outyield the more traditional two row varieties,” he said.
“But quality, up to a point, is compromised. We know from this year’s harvest that bushel weights for two row winter barleys were in the range 67 to 70: the comparable values for six rows were between 64 and 66.
“And these quality differences are significant.”
Pettit said that KWS Tower is a new winter barley variety worth looking out for this season.
